What’s the best-selling fighting game on the PlayStation 4? It probably won’t surprise you, but in the United States it’s Mortal Kombat X. Perhaps more shocking is just how much of a chokehold developer NetherRealm Studios has on this NPD published genre list, as Mortal Kombat 11 and Injustice 2 round out two more of the remaining five slots.
Coming in at fourth and fifth respectively are Dragon Ball FighterZ and Dragon Ball XenoVerse 2, meaning that there’s no room for Street Fighter V at all. It’s perhaps worth noting that this chart takes into account both physical and digital sales, so it’s not like the Capcom brawler is missing out due to the way data is tracked.

It's a shame Tekken 7 isn't up there (although I doubt it's that far behind). Easily the best playing fighting game this gen, in my fanboy-driven opinion.
keep in mind sfv been out a lot longer than those others, not that it matters really, it would have undersold anyway. Sfv is still my favorite though. Its just sad to know what it COULD BE.
MK11 is by far the best beat-em-up I've played in many, many years. A strong, diverse roster of characters, buttery smooth gameplay offline and online ( you dont have to participate in a bad ping match) plenty of towers with multiple modifiers, great single player story and separate character endings, shed loads of stuff to unlock via matches, towers and the krypt. Diverse character customizations...its just a ridiculously well put together package.
Those sales are REALLY impressive, but it must be said that for tournaments/streams SFV and Tekken 7 have been the games this generation, everything else had its minute of hype and went away...
Single player mode for fighting games is more important than multiplayer it seems, netherrealms games usually have very robust single player portion, I'm actually suprised at how much I enjoyed mkx story, and after I'm done with it I can play individual fighter to unlock their ending.
I was thinking I already got too much value from the game when I'm uninstalling it (bought it discounted on psn) lol.
@wiiware It's been said so many times but characters and content (single-player, like you say) is what sells fighting games. Smash Bros. is the best possible example — nothing comes close to the sheer amount of stuff that it offers right out of the box (and it obviously helps that it's a very good game).
At the end of the day, it's only the hardcore that focus so much on the gameplay and depth that fighting games have. The gameplay and depth is not what sells millions of copies of Mortal Kombat or Injustice — it's the fan favourite characters, the visuals, the amount of modes.
It's an interesting genre!
Never thought I would've said it considering how it launched but Street Fighter V, after the Arcade Edition update, is easily my favorite fighting game this gen. Then Injustice 2, Dead or Alive 6, Soul Calibur 6 and DoA 5 Las Round. Including games not on PS4 I'd bump DoA 5 off the list and have Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at no. 2.
Despite it’s rocky start, Street Fighter V is my favorite fighting game this gen. Samurai showdown is a close second. And rather you wanna call it a fighting game or not, Super Smash Bros Ultimate is the main game I play on Switch.
King of Fighters 14, that was another game I enjoyed. I honestly need to put in more time with Tekken 7, Soul Calibur 6, Dead or Alive 6 and Dragon Ball FighterZ.
Yeah MK11 is my favourite fighter on PS4 right now, even without the DLC it offers an insane amount of stuff. While i don't like the MTX side of things i will say its pretty toned down from Injustice 2 and could have been far worse considering WB, i can pretty easy ignore them and nowadays that's the best i can expect sadly.
I just want the MK11 complete edition to be announced/release already.
MKX has been on sale for $5 a buncha times, so I would think those numbers don’t mean as much as it might suggest, haha.
Anyway...MK11 is by far my favorite fighting game this generation, for the reasons others have listed above. Great fighting mechanics (blows MKX away IMHO), insane graphics, cool characters...only bad thing is the story mode ending that makes me feel weird about even my own existence!
@shonenjump86 There’s too many fighting games, not enough time! I just regretfully uninstalled KoF14, DOA6, and Tekken 7 last week and decided to only focus on getting better at MK11, SoulCalibur VI, and possibly Street Fighter V (Lucia is just too fun to play as, otherwise I woulda uninstalled that too, or at least until the next edition update).
