Electronic Arts has had a pretty disastrous generation. Its reputation has gone down the toilet in recent years, thanks primarily to its fascination with microtransactions and "surprise mechanics". That's not the only reason, though; its games have been generally uninspired, safe, and lacklustre experiences, and many beloved series have been unceremoniously dropped. One casualty of this is the excellent Skate series.
Before terms like loot boxes and shared world shooters were common terms, Skate rejuvenated skateboarding games with a more grounded approach. It's a franchise many want to see return. Fans rallied together to spam the publisher's social feeds a few years back. More recently, EA reactivated the online servers for Skate 3 just before E3 2018, sparking hopes that an announcement would be made at the trade show. Nothing happened.
In fact, the publisher seems wholly disinterested in Skate, as the trademark has now been officially labelled "Abandoned". The listing on the United States Patent and Trademark Office site shows that the trademark achieved this status on 1st August 2019. It seems a Skate 4 is more unlikely now than ever.
Are you sad to see the demise of the brilliant Skate series? Are you still holding out hope for a follow-up in the future? Graze your shins in the comments below.

Oh man, the memories, I love that intro. Also the first time I heard The Funeral by Band Of Horses which got me into them.
EA you fools! Shame on you!
US- "Please EA can we have skate skate 4"
EA- "What's that you say, another Anthem.Sure"
What a waste!
To go a whole generation without a skating game (and we're NOT counting THPS5) is terrible. We're not getting a boxing game at all this gen either. That's pretty mad really when you think about it. I don't think anybody would've predicted that in 2013.
Would rather have a remake of THPS 3 personally, but any skateboarding game would be good at this point!
That’s seriously crap, I only played Skate 3 this year and loved it. Session’s decent for early access and Skater XL shows potential but they’ll never achieve what the OG skating games set out to achieve nor will they have the soundtrack or licensing people want.
Ugh, all we have is that Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 that game out some years ago. That was just a messy game. I know a few friends of mine who won’t be happy about this news.
Guess we'll just have to go back to the good times of the older games, in both the Skate and Tony Hawk franchises.
Well that sucks. I spent hours on .skate. Loved it. I was hoping for another.
I'm sure EA have looked at the numbers and have decided Skate 4 would not be profitable, a vocal minority made a lot of noise about a mirrors edge sequel and that bombed.
I'm not going to post a link or anything, but according to another gaming site "they filed for renewal of the original trademark". I want Skate 4 so bad, but I don't think my heart can take this back and forth any more haha!
E.A. execs meeting: So legal dept., says if we don't do something about..."Skaaate (?)", we're gonna lose it.
Exec 2: Great, we can set up a loot shop & EA bucks currency for all the gear/boards & paid lootboxes with better odds vs 1 in a zillion in-game lootboxes!
Exec 3: According to our surveys, lootboxes are on the nose & getting bad press they're not surprise boxes.
Exec 2: Really? I know, what if we paywall access in the open world city & instead of lootboxes we make a trading card game to unlock the gear with EA Bucks? Kids love pokemon cards!
Exec 3: Are you mad?! Half of europe is down our throats saying we're promoting gambling to kids!
Exec 1: So, no lootboxes, paywall or trading cards...cancel it then!
I'd settle for a remaster (EA did it for Burnout Paradise).
At least on Xbox One they have Skate 3 on backwards compatibility.
It was renewed. There's still a chance! 🤞🏻
