Axiom Verge, the critically acclaimed Metroidvania from Thomas Happ Games, is getting a sequel in late 2020. While it’s not currently confirmed for the PlayStation 4, the title’s official website points out that we should “stay tuned to learn about additional platforms”. The blurb continues: “Axiom Verge 2 is part of the same story as Axiom Verge but is a completely new game: new characters, new powers, new enemies, and a new world. You can play it before or after the original.”
There’s a debut gameplay trailer for the Nintendo Switch edition embedded above. Could this one end up on the PlayStation 5, perhaps?

The first one is up there with Fez, Hyper Light Drifter, Towerfall and Braid as one of the best indies ever made - pretty shocked we are getting a direct sequel frankly but I’m all over this like @Shogunrok on Dragon Age Inquisition.
BUY IT.
I found the original to be somewhat forgettable, personally.
Hopefully this one is better. The trailer doesn't fill me with confidence, though.
@Ralizah I know games don’t exist in vacuums and so it’s easy to knock the perhaps under developed soundtrack (for example, even though the main theme is an absolute banger) but I never forgot that it was a product of one mans hard work, which helped me really appreciate some of the even rougher parts. 10/10 for me!
@kyleforrester87 Oh, sure. It's very impressive that one dude made it. Same with games like Stardew Valley and Undertale. But I have to judge it alongside its peers, and, personally, it just didn't stand out enough to me.
What I will say about this sequel is that it feels more like the developer is finding a unique identity for the series. The original felt like bootleg Metroid. This doesn't, based on the footage.
@kyleforrester87 Yeah, I LOVE Axiom Verge, but Hyper Light Drifter is on a whole different level in my opinion. Best indie game ever. Axiom Verge might well be my second favorite indie game though.
@Giygas_95 yeah I’ll give you that, Hyper Light Drifter is next level. Can’t say I enjoyed it more than Fez though... can’t say I didn’t, either...
Essential game, either way.
Looks like timed exclusive for switch off the jump. Or that seemed to be what the 'Indie Direct' indicated
Oh cool.
I have the physical Vita version of the first. I know Happ had some issues with his distributors for the game, and the story behind the game's development was genuinely touching.
Glad there's more. I should probably go and actually go through the first game!
Nice! Still need to finish the first one though...
And play Hyper Light Drifter by the sounds of it.
I really enjoyed Axiom Verge, but I unfortunately played it just before I played Hollow Knight, so I always completely forget it exists when compared to the best metroidvania I've ever played and one of my favourite games of all time. It's a shame though cause I did like it, and whilst it had a few problems in terms of its map design, I'm very much looking forward to this!
I really like the first game foreboding and mysterious story, great soundtrack, and weird weapon/powerup, I hope this game is as good as axiom verge 1. Considering the trailer is not as dark as the first game trailer, maybe it take place before the war/genocide.
@kyleforrester87 fez and hld are just 2 completely different games, hard to try to compare them to each other besides the fact they are indies. Both games are incredible, along with axiom verge.
