In case you missed it, the wonderful Dreams now has a release date on PlayStation 4. It's been a long time coming, but Media Molecule's ambitious project is now just a couple of months away from launch. One feature that had previously been confirmed for the creation suite was full support for PSVR, but it sounds like this won't be there day one.
This is a shame, as the developer had previously said the feature would be present at launch, but it seems it's had to push things a little further back. Communications Manager Abbie Heppe delivered the bad news in a Twitter exchange:
It sounds like Media Molecule is hard at work on the functionality right now, and given that the studio was initially targeting launch, it stands to reason that PSVR support won't arrive too late to the party.
Are you looking forward to Dreams on 14th February 2020? Are you disappointed that PSVR support won't be there at launch? Strap on your headsets in the comments below.

I wonder if it got it's release date pushed forward due to other titles releasing later.
Interesting. As long as the wait has been for this game (it’s been in development for what... seven years?) it’s strange that they would go ahead and launch without full functionality. That means either they’re struggling with the VR mode and it’s really not that close, or they are getting heat from Sony to hurry up and just release the game.
@Th3solution It's heat. I'm a massive fan of Dreams and you should have already bought it!
However it's likely gonna tank. My own dreamweaver mates have gradually moved away from the platform, new stuff isn't getting any likes (unless it's covered in the media), new dreamers will find it too difficult and the controls once in a game are really floaty, I can't work that last point out but it makes games a chore to play imo.
I really hope a couple million gamers buy it at release and half of that use it regularly. But again its terrible timing with 3 of the biggest games ever releasing soon after. So even the people who do buy into dreams will be pulled away.
Dreams with the PS5 version of PSVR (PSVR2?) could genuinely be a game changer for VR as a whole. I hope they take their time with this.
@themcnoisy how easy is it to find cool new little things people have created? Like, do you search for a tag or a # or something?
@themcnoisy Yeah, I know you’ve been one of Dream’s biggest supporters and I was really on board with the idea early on. I’m still not saying that I won’t buy it eventually, but it does feel like it’s a couple years too late to the party. I probably would have been more open to taking it on when PS4 was earlier in its lifecycle. There’s just too many high quality gaming experiences now to choose from.
I’ll be watching closely to see how things go. Maybe the community will catch fire in February. Maybe Sony will really support the game and promote it. Maybe it will morph into a game that will be cross-generational have real staying power.
...or maybe it will die a slow and painful death and the poor talented people at Media Molecule will be looking for a new studio to work for soon.
Great game imo bought early access and sunk a lot of time into it. Then again I’m not the typical PS player and I think that this would do much better on Switch where gamers are more open to creativity and indie games, which is essentially what are going to be produced by dreams. I also love the late 90s platformer era and this has helped fill that hole for me. I don’t think it will be a commercial success on PS4 which is such a shame!
Dreams on PS5 should be a dream. And the power of the PS5 should also help making it look better in VR.
@SnowTiesAreCool Really easy.
It's uses a pseudo social media platform. So you can follow people whos stuff you like. Every asset users make is available to use, so if you make a vocal and drop it as an asset another user can search vocals and it will be there somewhere.
The big problem with dreams, is users can literally take your idea and fabricate it as their own. I have seen this already and tbh I have used other users stuff, instruments etc and it hardly gives any credit unless you mention it on the front screen. This is a big big problem, one of my songs was taken wholesale and tweaked by another user who renamed it. Ironic really as one of my first music tracks was a rip off of better off alone by Alice DJ lol.
But yeah it's great and unique. Well worth a purchase.
@quinnyboy58 No creative people people at PlayStation. I want to say a something but ill keep quiet.
@Th3solution We will see. But like Death Stranding I am concerned that most of the people interested in it are already on board. Which is a shame.
At least the support is coming. There's a guy on Twitter creating absolutely crazy things using peripherals like the PS Move and objects like a glass of water. With the PS VR the guy would break the game for sure (in a good way).
Damn. I’ve been looking forward to VR being implemented since I bought the Early Access on day one. First they said later in the year. Then they said at full release. Now they are saying some point after release. Annoying, but I can wait.
then i won't support or buy their game until they do, it was the same in the early access too. they keep saying there will be psvr support but i don't see results or any improvement in that.
@SoulChimera like I said it's just empty promise after empty promises, I don't know why you brought the early access knowing that there is no psvr support though.
@huyi I’m in the creative industry so it’s something I’m very interested in regardless of VR. That being said, for me, VR support would take this to the next level. Creating my own playable stuff in VR would be amazing.
First thing my kid asked me last night when I told him it had a release date - "Will it have PSVR?". I told him "no". He said "Figures" like your typical teenager. He then asked if I bought Astrobot and I said yes so we're good for now. Still need to pick up Concrete Genie for that Christmas skin. Was on sale for $20 and I missed it, that's my price now.
@themcnoisy They really really really need to fix the hub world and controls.
I played it last night for the first time in months.
First I couldn't move the little red cone guy b/c I forgot you had to possess him w/ the floating lint ball.
Then I ran all around that barren gray moonscape trying to find entry points for create, play etc. I finally gave up and just hit Options.
Then I wasn't sure if I was supposed to move the controller gyro style to pick stuff or move the left thumbstick. I went into "Play" b/c I don't create then had the same trouble picking levels to play.
First game I pick is "Snails". So my kid and I are sitting there looking at the screen, nothing is happening, my kid says "system froze" but I get back out. I think "Snails" is just a pic. Maybe. Who knows.
Next level is Kariko village from Ocarina of Time. Thats' what my kid told me anyway based on the music. I run around a bit, go through a doorway. I'm out. I think. Do I go back in? Did I make a mistake? Do I restart? I back out.
I get that from mM perspective this is probably supposed to be like this, a "Dream" you float in and out of, never knowing what the heck is going on. But that's a hard sell. They've also been working this for 7 or 89 years, they kind of know what's going on. For a new guy, it just doesn't function.
Maybe the game needs 2 front ends - "hub world of the surreal" - and - "Come in and Play". Nintendo Land on Wii U basically had 2, hub world and menu driven.
I'm not optimistic, I don't think they want a "Dreams for Dummies" version, but it would certainly help getting more people to play more. Right now I don't want to turn it on again, too confusing.
Just give me a physical copy of Dreams and I will be as happy as a sandboy.
@rjejr Youtube has loads of helpfull tutorials.
@Number09 Son of a...
Had a long reply, my browser ate it.
Short version - they can make creative as complicated as they want, but for people who just want to jump on and play a few levels it's way too difficult and unintuitive. The game needs to be random tested in some shopping malls.
I already have the game. Waiting for VR support to drop.
@SoulChimera just playing with the psvr headset in dreams will be cool, I'm eager to see what people can create in dreams with psvr, the content would be rich if psvr was supported from the start but even if they do add psvr support soon the content that will support it will still be slow regardless.
@rjejr I have to agree, I don't really get into the whole creating stuff as I don't have time for that but I do like what other people have created, a simple approach would be good for newcomers.
@huyi Thanks, I think you're the first person to agree with me on here about anything in about 3 weeks.
@rjejr Ha bad bounce had the same thing happen to me.
I hear you and I agree mate it is 1 of those that feels like a task sometimes I turn on the PS4 and just want to play R-type quick and easy straight in.
Im glad i bought the early access version of dreams. With everything else launching in the spring, no way would i have been able to afford it at launch. Look forward to VR coming eventually!
@Th3solution I have talked to some of the people over at Media Molecule and it seems most of the VR functionality under the hood is working perfectly fine but the stuff that takes time is to make the UI and tools so that the user can actually utilize VR properly. You have to imagine that they have to make tools that allows the player to make VR games but they have never made VR games themselves before. Hand tracking, headtracking, etc. all has to have a new UI designed and created. And also they are a small team that are already working on several different other things of this scale as well. Multiplayer is another thing they need to get ready as well and it is just about prioritizing what to do first.
I think it is reasonable to think that Dreams was pushed forward a bit as TLOU2 and allegedly GOT got pushed back.
@KeanuReaves Thanks for the insight! It certainly is an ambitious project. I guess you’re right. Maybe the VR function is only 3-6 months away, but that would put Dreams release date closer to TLoU2 or GoT, and that certainly wouldn’t be doing it any favors (despite those being very different games with different target audiences at large). Considering the big picture, I agree it’s better to release now with a VR update later.
Here’s hoping the game succeeds for the very talented team at Mm. This project is astoundingly innovative.
Dreams needs consistently good content like youtube. I hope it inspires cool projects. Some fun stuff. Like an art museum
@rjejr glad to be of service 😄😂
