Sony has just concluded its annual PlayStation Awards in Japan, and it should come as no surprise that there were no announcements or reveals during the show. The platform holder has conducted this awards ceremony yearly since the inception of PlayStation, and as expected, this year's celebration was all about the best-selling games in its homeland.

Of course, this year was slightly different for a couple of reasons. Firstly, today marks the 25th anniversary of PlayStation, and secondly, the PlayStation Awards was streamed with English translation for the first time. Speculation began to swirl; could Sony be using this event to open up about PS5? Would there be any major announcements made during the course of the stream? Some convinced themselves something like this might happen, but the reality is that PlayStation Awards has only ever been about Japan's best-selling titles. That Sony didn't purposely draw attention to the awards ceremony should've been a clue that this would be nothing to get excited about.

Sony has acknowledged the 25th anniversary with this message from head honcho Jim Ryan, and the company has said it will discuss PS5 further in 2020. Even during Ryan's opening speech at the PlayStation Awards, he says to look forward to more info on its next-gen platform next year.

So, what actually did go down at this year's awards show? Well, several publishers picked up trophies for their best-performing games in Japan, a band played jazzy versions of game themes in between, and Yoko Taro appeared with his ludicrous (and brilliant) giant mask. The grandaddy of PlayStation, Ken Kutaragi, marked the 25th anniversary with a speech, lots of photos were taken, and that was kind of it. You can watch the stream archive above.
