Firmware update 7.01 has just dropped out of the blue for PlayStation 4, meaning it's available to download on your console right now. Weighing in at just 469MB, it's a patch that isn't going to take too long to download whatsoever.
However, what does update 7.01 actually do? Well, not a lot it seems. The official PlayStation help website simply states: "This system software update improves system performance." Does this sound like even more stability for PS4? Yes, it does. It doesn't look like this patch will bring about any major changes to your experience, but we'll update this article if anything changes.
Are you happy about extra stability? Download in the comments below.

Upon a foundation of PS4s will I build my castle, that is how stable the system will be after 7.01
I like the stability updates. Makes me feel reassured.
Stable genius.
Well there's an election tomorrow so Sony are pledging stability.
Strong and stable lol
Whew, thank goodness for this. My PS4 Pro was starting to seem a little wobbly these days, so I am glad Sony stabilized it.
@GamingFan4Lyf I was wondering my mine kept falling of its unit...
@JoeBlogs Ah yes... fun bloody times... Always remember getting a Commodore 64 from my parents and then spending 20 mins trying to get the cassette tape to load properly
Gotta love the comment section whenever a stabilty update hits 🤣 Thanks for the laughs guys!
another security update, these are just boring. hopefully we get some new features in the new year.
@GamingFan4Lyf Stick a folded beer mat under the offending corner and hey presto, stability improved! lol
@dellyrascal - Cassette? Noob, I had to hand code blackjack on my ZX80. Took me an entire weekend only to get 'syntax error in'.... Aaarrgghh!!!!!
its more stable than a nuclear reactor
My PS4 is so stable I heard Spirit moved in.
These updates are popping up as much as Elections lots of hot air not much change.
@Kiro_Senpai lol, at least it's wasn't this year's 'Oven ready' slogan.
@Shigurui Those were the days. I remember buying mags to type in the code, only to find that the crappy printing on page 2 had a number of lines faded out.
One good thing about that, was that it forced you to attempt to fill in the missing parts. Despite several degrees later, hand on heart, I'd say that's where I truly learnt how to program code.
'Strong and Stable'
And look what happened to her!!?!
@GamingFan4Lyf OMG so much turbulence!! 😱
And here ive been trying to dump 1oz of StarTron in the disk drive...thanks Sony!!
The PS4 is going to try to compete with the 3DS for most stable console
@ToniK Nice
I take it this system update is optional? Because iv not had to download it yet or has it not been released yet?.
@Hengist - Good to know I'm not the only old timer around here. Hard to believe we used to sit down and have to code games to play them back in the day. Fun times!
@TribalRivals Yeah, this one's a bit different. I noticed last night it had downloaded but not installed. Every other update I've had has had to be installed before I'm allowed to use network features. Not sure why this one differs.
@Shigurui I think there's a fair few of us 'oldies' on here. You can imagine all the eyes misting up every time Spectrums or Commodores are mentioned. Not dissimilar to what happened after spending hours writing code only to find it didn't work.
@dellyrascal Yes, & discovering somehow the tuning on the telly needed slight readjustment between using my C64 or Amiga...& trying to squeeze extra room for C64 stuff by cutting a 2nd notch & flipping over the floppy disk!
@Shigurui I doth my cap to you sir
I don't understand why the jokes didn't switch to more performance years ago. Keep up guys 😏. You sound like boomers haha
@Robocod Hahaha I remember those problems... makes me oddly sentimental...
@Shigurui
Amstrad CPC for me haha
My ps4 pro can now withstand hurricane force winds and earthquakes with all these stability download patches.
@JJ2 remember that most of us boomers helped to start the console gaming generations with console/computers like the Atari 2600, Spectrum zx80 and zx48, Commodore 64.
@JJ2 - I actually started out on a Commodore PET in the late 70's. Back when system stability meant stuffing some cardboard under the wonky leg of the table that was holding that monster up!
@JoeBlogs 🤣 I'm not old.... I prefer to say I'm levelled up 👍
@lyallop
Hey I m in the same boat haha
@Stumpy more seasoned
