Original Article: After three whole hours of watching Geoff Keighley wheel out announcements, musical acts, and heavy-looking trophies, The Game Awards 2019 came to a close with its Game of the Year award. Much to our surprise, it wasn't Death Stranding or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that took the gong -- it was Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
From Software's punishing action title was declared the best game of 2019 by a panel of games journalists and other members of the industry. There's no doubt that Sekiro is a great game, but it felt like the excitement that surrounded its release back in March dissipated quite quickly. As such, we didn't expect it to walk away with the top prize, but here we are. Congrats to Miyazaki and the team.
Do you agree with Sekiro being Game of the Year? Keep your blade sharp and your senses sharper in the comments section below.

Didn't play Sekiro but I voted for it on their official site. I thought DMC5 should've been nominated for Game of the Year award as well.
That was a pretty random GOTY winner, honestly.
First time anyone's talked about this game in six months.
Sekiro is amazing. It's a definite nominee and should be talked about more. That being said, I do think that DS has done much more to push the industry forward deserved it more. Sekiro is an incredible game, but DS is also amazing and in ways we haven't seen before.
Weird choise for GOTY. I would have put my money on something like...like...s***. This has been a great year, but mostly because I happened to really enjoy games with mediocre meta scores, like Days Gone and Rage 2. Well...Sekiro it is then
@ILikeStake
That made me laugh hard enough to nearly wake my wife 😆😆😆
Language please - Quintumply
A bit random, it wouldn't even be in my top 5 this year
YES! YES! I was so hoping this would win. This year had a number of great titles, but this was my favorite. So much fun to learn. My favorite From game but it's just so different too.
Sekiro was great but as I’m nearing the end of Death Stranding, that definitely should’ve won imo.
I platinumed both games and to be honest DS worth the award from story, model design, direction and music.
Impossibru. The internet told me these awards are rigged and HK would get it because of his buddy Geoff Keighley.
I would have gone for RE2 but i'm happy at this, it was a fantastic game and deserves the award.
Should've had Martin Tyler announce it like, "Sekiroooooooooooooooo!"
@ApostateMage 😂😂😂
Well deserved I think, amazing game. Someone mentioned above this isn't talked about by sites much.
I'd say that is due to having no multiplayer or dlc, those sort of things get reported on a lot, just look at Destiny. Not having those doesn't make it any less deserving though, just less of a cash cow. That's no bad thing.
Definitely well deserved. This game is sublime.
Goes to show the GameAwards can make wrong choices then...like GOW over RDR2. But then again if Sekiro is anything like Bloodborne, it's okay if it's GOTY. People are talking about DS doing new things, RDR2 did new things like hair growth and styling, the camp dynamism, most realistic horses ever in games history among other things and still lost to same old hack and slash GOW. I love GOW but I still maintain RDR2 was more deserving.
Sekiro is awesome, but the win does feel slightly off.
I don't play From Software games due to them being hard for the sake of being hard, but I guess this kind of choice is always arbitrary. Glad Disco Elysium got the recognition it deserves!
The least deserving of the nominees to be honest. It's a good game but not only does it do nothing better than any from soft game before it it doesn't do anything better than any of the other nominees. Assuming there wasn't a one game per publisher rule specifically for GOTY I would have swapped Sekiro out for DMCV.
It's an excellent choice, and to be honest the most innovative release of all the entrants. Yes, outer worlds is good, but it's basically Fallout, with a lot of the same tried and true formulas. That's not to say it wasn't a good game, but to get game of the year, you need to innovate and to make something that isn't out there anywhere else. Sekiro delivered. Whether you got on with it or not, is really not the point. The game stepped out of the zone, and went it's on path for style, and gameplay, and for those that did get on with it (i'll admit I was one of those people) it truly was a fantastic masterpiece if you have the patience, and the time to give to it.
Very surprising! I enjoyed Sekiro, but honestly not my favorite FromSoftware game by a long shot—in fact it’s the only game of theirs that I didn’t finish (got stuck on Owl and just got tired of it). It was beautiful and challenging, etc. etc., but I got bored of the one-dimensional combat. And the story? Meh...
My GOY award definitely goes to Control, with runner up Death Stranding.
@KratosMD You do realize NOT EVERYONE cares about online and the comparison isn't between DS and RDR2. I'm not implying DS shouldn't have won here.
Would be my choice, one hell of game. Not sure why that it's not being taked about right now cones into it. It's called game of the year, not game of the moment.
@WanderingBullet Why vote for it if you haven't played?
@Orange_Man_Bad Too difficult for me but I appreciate what it's trying to do. I've enjoyed watching gameplay videos of it too.
Great atmosphere and world, decent combat, but is not a GOTY quality game if we are being serious.
Death Stranding (yes I said it), Resident Evil 2, DMC 5 hell even Outer Wilds or Control I would argue are more deserving.
Nothing against Sekiro as even though I was too bad at it to complete it I adored it and would give it a good 8/10 I just think the other games were so much better in ways.
Congrats to from software.legendary studio.word up son
Looks like Disco Elysium walked away with the most awards.
@KratosMD
Death Stranding introduced an innovative new way of online interactivity.
I keep seeing this assertion and even now, after 33 hours of play, I'm still mystified. What precisely was so innovative about the so-called asynchronous MP?
As I near the end of death stranding it has been a great experience and a lot of fun. I thought it should’ve won its original, it’s different and it’s thought-provoking.
@KratosMD Jesus Christ did you read where I wrote I'm not comparing RDR2 and DS? But since YOU started the comparison, let me just say it's fine if you think that online component in DS is a game changer, but you need to realise not everybody wants to be connected. Like @JohnGrey, it doesn't sound important to me just like realistic horses or beard growth isn't important you, which is laughable because all what most games have been striving to achieve in all its existence is realism to begin with. I mean isn't that why Sam has all those mountain of boxes on his back to show he's not magically hiding things in his pocket like most other games...
@KratosMD See, you mention Dark Souls. I'm guessing it's like in Bloodborne where you can call for help online. Well guess what I never used that feature because I wanted to beat all the bosses ALONE. I used help from AI-controlled characters a few times that's about it. Not everyone wants to be and stay connected.
Sekiro was a safe 'meh' choice. Death Stranding for me. It is a rainbow colored imperfect jewel in a sea of gray drab sequels.
It's a surprise Outer Worlds won nothing. With all the Fallout 4 failed and Outer Worlds is the saviour comments.
@TheArt Arthur Morgan > Kratos.
I honestly was a little surprised by Sekiro getting the GotY award - mostly because of Geoff and his 'love' for Kojima. I can understand why a Divisive game that has dropped significantly in sales quickly isn't indicative of GotY material but I can't say the nominees were particularly outstanding and I think better games have lost out in the past during strong years. Next year for example, you could have Cyberpunk 2077, Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us 2, Doom Eternal etc as well as games like Halo Infinite, Godfall, Hellblade II etc which look like Launch games for next gen systems. That's just a few of the games we know about now and others could well be up for Awards too...
It's a shame that God of War and Red Dead II had to go head-to-head last year, as I think either of them would have walked away with it this year.
Not that I didn't enjoy Sekiro or anything. Great game, and the combat was a real step up
@ApostateMage Y'now with all of Midgard's beauty, it's quite disappointing its only inhabitants are Kratos and 8 other people. Makes you wonder all the talk of all those powerful gods - Odin and co - fighting to rule over what? 9 people. In the end it's the same hack and slash in any other game albeit with extremely gorgeous graphics and design. Although I find RDR2's graphics more unique and innovative looking like oldschool drawings in the Wheeler Rawson Catalogue. It's not going to change the results of the 2018 Game Awards but I'm free to point out how RDR2 is better anytime I feel like. I still believe it was a "we've been giving it to Rockstar's games all the time, let's give it to GOW for a change" situation.
Sekiro is not even top 5 in the GOTY list. In any case Bloodborne or Dark souls were more important in their years, and are still better games today. It seems to me this is a lifetime achievement award in a year with no clear cut favourites. RE2 was near perfect but was a remake. Control was great but ran like crap and was not optimized at all, Death Stranding was divisive. DMC5 and SWJ:FO should have been nominated. The most amicable and safe choice was the game no one will remember in 5 years when thinking about 2019 gaming.
@WanderingBullet
You vote for a game you never played LMAO
Sekiro is GOTY 2019 and if you don't think so you are a casual.
@TheArt You clearly didn’t pay attention to the game then, it’s clearly stated that most people ran off from Midgard or are pretty much dead hence why don’t see anyone really. Also gotta point out all the gods are living In Asgard and Vanaheim preparing for Ragnarok. All in all GOW was the perfect game and definitely deserved to be GOTY, sure RDR2 was good (my favorite game of all time) but had flaws, its just wasn’t lucky at the end.
@LightingThor Lol I know that but I find it's just the game's excuse to not include any inhabitants. Surely at least some people could've survived hiding in caves or something or include more dwarves. You mean Brok and Sindr have that smithing business setup just for Kratos? Even with the terrifying horrors in Bloodborne's Yarnham you could at least listen to people at their windows hiding in their homes. The cities of Dishonored are always on lockdown but you do find people. This by far is my favourite GOW tbh, I see the team tried to make it a bit open world but couldn't nail it and ended up being quite linear hence the "everybody's gone" excuse, as sad an excuse as Rockstar's usual "the bridge is closed to the other islands because of hurricane" or "you're wanted DOA in Blackwater" so...
@KratosMD To me that's no more innovative or interesting than the end of Subnautica when you can leave materials and a helpful message that a random player will receive. There's no interaction, it might just as well be randomly generated by the game for the manner in which those so-called strands tie anyone together.
@TheArt Sure they could’ve done that, guess they are saving that for future games but GOW is a linear game and from what I can recall there haven’t been to many npcs in the franchise.
@LightingThor Just what I've been thinking, they might add that in future. It just felt too lonely.
@TheArt I thought Astrobot was GOTY 2018 and not only is it a great game, Its the first great full VR game. So it's more unique than either DS or RDR 2.
DS is brilliant, however unlike the other brilliant games from 2018 and 2017 it's key selling point is traversal and you cannot grasp how good it is from watching videos unlike RDR2 and GoW. Prior to a journey out its like setting up your football team in fifa or Madden. The setup you take is massively important. Your map takes on even more importance than any other game as you joy out a path with the least resistance (like orienteering) . Once on your way one tumble or misjudged journey path can mean a safe way can become a hazardous nightmare with your cargo being wrecked at best and a bloomin massive hole void out in the map at worst (similar to playing command and conquer and making a great army to see it wiped out by tanks you didn't even know where invented yet).
It's not perfect but it's essential for any PlayStation fan like you are. Go and pick it up.
@themcnoisy Nah, GOW won in 2018. Just so we're clear though, I'm not questioning DS' qualities or anything, I look forward to it in future. However I noticed a lot disappointments in the comments seeing Sekiro win instead of DS with some arguing the latter does new things. And I compared it to 2018, where RDR2 did a lot of new things but still lost to GOW.
@KratosMD
And that's how two people can respect each other's position even whilst vehemently disagreeing about the quality of a particular game. Well done, us. Cheers!
Yes, my GOTY has won back to back. Suck. On. That.
