Host Geoff Keighley has just wrapped up this year's annual Game Awards, delivering on his promise to celebrate the best games of 2019 and give us a glimpse into the future with numerous game announcements and updates. Surprisingly, there weren't too many rumours floating about going into the show itself, meaning that we felt a huge amount of excitement when the likes of PlayStation 5's very first game was announced in the form of Godfall. Other announcements which took to the Los Angeles stage included the surprising reveal of Microsoft's next-generation console. Sony's got some competition there.
However, what did you think of Keighley's big event? Were you impressed by the winners and the video game reveals that came with them? What would you improve for next year? What was your favourite moment? Place your vote in our poll and share your thoughts in the comments below.

I thought it was pretty solid. Good variety of announcements, almost felt like it was better than E3 2019 xD
I got plenty of stuff I was looking forward to see, so it gets an A+ from me. Don't really care about the cringe. I mean, first PS5 gameplay footage? X-Box Series X visual reveal? C'mon, guys - that's hot stuff!
Plus, WE GET TO BE A SHARK IN THIS GEN, TOO!
I’m at work so only just catching up with what went on now. Loved the GoT trailer.
I mean, they showed the next Xbox so you could never really complain about the quality of the announcements. But like the entire industry this year, it was still a bit flat.
@get2sammyb They didn't really share much about it beyond the name and appearance, though. We saw a couple of games with CGI trailers, but that's it. It's not like we didn't know a new Xbox was in development.
Definitely the worst year for announcements so far.
Didn't watch the event but based on the new games for PS4/PS5 announcements, I'd have to say for me it was pretty disappointing.
Game of the year: Sekiro
Really??? REALLY? FROM ALL THE GAMES that could have been added to the category, they picked SEKIRO... speechless
It was okay, but it ran for over three hours. I know there's a lot to get through but bloody hell.
It was kind of disappointing. I don't really care all that much for the awards, and the announcements weren't all that mind-blowing. It was OK, I guess.
The awards themselves were a bit of a bust, but the announcements were pretty solid.
@Bamila sekiro is a pretty awesome game. Im fine with it being goty. Just wondering, have u played it?
@get2sammyb but it was a terrible announcement. It had a cool CGI trailer, but showed no gameplay. and that was it. It revealed nothing about the console, revealed a terrible name with Xbox Series X (we already have an Xbox One X...), confused by saying it's a series, and it looks like a trash can. I missed the announcement initially and went back to watch it, but a co-worker who had seen a moment before it said it looked like a trashcan and he wasn't joking. It didn't spend any time giving any details about the console, even matching stuff we know about the PS5. It was the absolutely wrong time and place. It the most forgettable console reveal in the history of gaming.
That being said, Hellblade makes it look like Xbox console exclusives have some real promise again, but considering everything Microsoft touched this gen was never more than okay really it I'm still a bit apprehensive. Though I really hoped to be proved wrong. But they didn't do much to help me feel like they'll have a better generation.
But in short, no, the quality of announcements can absolutely be called into question and the Xbox announcement helps that argument.
I’m just glad Death Stranding didn’t win Game of the Year.
Well I'm glad I didn't bother to stay up is all that I'll say, this has been a weird year for gaming overall and if not for Resident Evil 2 and Death Stranding it would be utterly forgettable. Where are all the game announcements he was bragging about? Fast and the Furious? Godfall, yeah it looked shiny but it didn't excite.
Then we have Microsoft and oh my god, was that the worst console reveal of all time? What's it called the Xbox series X, did they learn nothing from Nintendo's failure with the Wii U?
Then to top it off Sekiro voted game of the year, I don't get it.
At least state of play was good the other day
@Neolit I can see it now
"mum can I have an Xbox for Christmas?"
"Yeah sure, which one?"
"Oh the X, it has to be the X the one with Halo Infinite"
Nothing could possibly go wrong 🤔
I was in bed having dreams about Cyberpunk 2077.
It's okay, there's console announcement, hellblade 2, ghost of tsushima trailer + release date, and the first ps5 games announcement. This year has been calm before the storm kind of year though, all the megatons will be in the next year
@Trajan Exactry
Any shock/surprise winners for you guys?
Just a time killer. Some were great reveals. It seemed like the same games were up for awards, like that's only thing they played. I mean, not even including No Mans Sky for one of the awards was just maddening. NMS has been out since 2016, and Hello Games is still adding free game-changing updates.
Not as fun as Blazing Chrome
@Trajan Thanks, there can be beauty in Emptiness after all. Their newer stuff is pretty great as well.
And STILL no Batman
One word BORING
@m1349 I gave up because I couldn’t beat that raging bull & I just wanted to start Devil May Cry 5. I loved what I played though.
I respect people who have the patience for and enjoy the challenge of souls like games but when you work and have about 2 hours to enjoy a game in the evening dying over and over again isn't my personal idea of fun especially when that time can be better spent on other games
It was a good show, but definitely too long. There were some decent announcements, and I loved the Beaker and Bunsen skit. I think Geoff can improve the Game Awards significantly if he just let the Muppets host the entire thing.
Too long but other shows should take.note. it was very well done
Awards like this are still a joke. It should be just about awards not anything else.
Goose Game was completely and utterly robbed.
@Akurusu firecracker
@soracloud28
It's like people don't even try to play games anymore, when they can't do something as simple as read an item description.
I get that a lot of people severely lack creativity and don't want to experiment, but Sekiro literally tells you that firecrackers work well against beasts.
Good announcements and the awards are fun, the whole thing together is waaaaaaaaaaaay too long.
@m1349
I'm not hating I was agreeing with the person I was replying to.
Why don't you go play a game?
@m1349 Nice! :3
Then everyone is happy!
Norman Reedus was there ready to accept the game of the year award. So disappointing.
Elder scrolls online not even nominated tut tut
Ending with that horrible licensed game and having Vin Diesel announce the GOTY, whilst shamelessly plugging his next movie... That killed it for me. Also, as a Nintendo fan, I was disappointed with the overall lack of announcements. But I guess that's on Nintendo, not the show
Edit: typos
Nah this year kinda sucked. The NMH 3 trailer was the biggest thing for me. And godfall I guess
My question is where in the hell is that new Batman game. WB Montreal has been teasing that for forever.
I was dreaming about a release date and pre-order for Ghost
@Constable_What especially after having used it on the horse (which if you eavesdrop that hint is just straight handed to you) it was only intuitive to use against the bull.
Last year was my first and last time viewing the game awards. Not subjecting my self to watching 3 hours of a corporate event that's most of the time lackluster. Geoff Knightly & his yearly overly hyped event is played out. I'll stick to catching the aftermath on websites like this..
I watched more than half of it, but couldn't make it to the end, it was past midnight and I was quite tired. These are my impressions based on what I saw:
I don't like this format at all. I watched the whole dmn thing and will never do it again.
A few good announcements here and there, but the rest was either boring or cringe-worthy, not to mention incredibly bloated and overlong.
You can see that this industry is not well-versed in being under the spotlight: every single interview and interaction felt extremely awkward, even when it's only Geoff annoincing stuff and failing to look at the camera and give the audience some confidence, and even when there are professional actors on stage. I mean, if Michelle and Vin are not used to that kinda stuff, who is in that situation? Instead they still managed to make it awkward (cool shoulders, Vin) and about their own upcoming movie. I thought Keanu's appearance was cringy, bit this is on another level, as Keanu at least was likable and funny. But even that didn't stop his appearance from feeling awkward: I don't know how to explain it, but I think it still relates to the innate awkwardness of the medium.
I mean, you can tell devs are devs by watching their acceptance speech and their lack of understanding of when and where to go next.
@Arugula well, it was my first time watching it and will also be last.
Lesson learnt lol
@3MonthBeef "The Game Awards is trying to mix the two worlds and that's a tall order."
Exactly this. I get what you're saying, in fact I thank that is the problem, and the fact that after 5 years it still feels this stilted and awkward tells me Geoff and co. have a long way to go.
I was excited to see more of Ghost of Tsushima, The Wolf Among Us 2, Control, and Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Also Godfall's reveal, plus Hellblade and Bravely Default II + Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 + No More Heroes III.
