When isn’t there a furore on gaming forums? There’s a lot of discussion at the moment regarding comments made by trusted Kotaku scribe Jason Schreier, who teased on a Split Screen podcast that the PlayStation 5 will have exclusive first-party games at launch. Surprising? Not really, but it sounds like Xbox will be following a different philosophy, with cross-gen titles playable on both Project Scarlett and the Xbox One family when it releases its own new box next year.
Talking about next-gen development, Schreier said that he believes most third-party titles are being developed with both the PS5 and PS4 in mind – as is often the case during a hardware transition. However, he added the following: “Some of the stuff I've heard about is PS5 only. I haven't heard anything about Xbox first-party games, but I'm sure their stuff is going to be on as much stuff [as possible]. Actually, they already said Halo: Infinite is going to be cross-gen, so Microsoft I'm sure will be much less about exclusives.”
Schreier reiterated the comments when asked to comment on social media:
Sony has been very clear in recent interviews that it still believes in generations, so there should be no surprise that it’s creating games exclusively for its new hardware. And that should be good news for anyone planning to purchase the system, as you can pretty much guarantee it’s going to be utilised to its fullest out of the box. As for what the games are, well, the expectation is that Bluepoint’s strongly speculated Demon’s Souls Remake is one, while there suddenly seems to be a ton of discourse revolving a new Ratchet & Clank from Insomniac. All should be revealed soon.

who would have thought?
don't know about xbox's strategy though,i mean will they ever plan to have exclusives for the scarlet or will that console just serve as the high end model with all games coming to all current xbox systems?
if so than that seems terrible in the long run for the scarlet.
Of course. You need that to sell consoles. Why buy the new Xbox if you can play Halo on the one you have? No launch exclusives isn’t a good idea.
The Internet loves to make mountains out of mole hills but it's taking the p*** now. Doesn't help that a site used it for clickbait (real clickbait btw) and xbots latched onto it thinking they had something to score points from.
@AdamNovice did they think that ps5 would have no launch exclusives or something?
and if so,why would xbox fansboys even mock that when xbox plans to do that exact thing?
It does seem like Sony is caring less and less about exclusives. Many titles are technically already available to play on PC via streaming- and other titles that Sony own the IP to, like Detroit and Death Stranding are playable on PC. Exclusives are important to me and are the main reason I buy a console. Hope Sony doesn’t loose sight of that next gen
no xbox exclusives, rip xbox scarlett.
The benefits of consoles over pc is games are made specifically for that system. They could make a game not optimized for ps5 and playable on ps4, but that wouldn't benefit anyone but ps4 players. Nah, I need that power of the ps5.
@Jaz007 Why buy a Switch when you can play BOTW on that Wii U you....wait.
Why buy a Wii when you can buy Twilight Princess on that Gamecube….wait.
Er….
hm.
I honestly expect some cross generation first party games, because there is always one, even the PS4 pulled TLOU out a year later, for some reason, so to say oh, TLOUP2 wont be enhanced on PS5 is weird, and Ghost of Tsushima, assuming its late 2020, is basically just asking for it.
This is a case of different companies doing different things and you know what? Good.
The two boxes are already going to be basically the same in hardware again, so how they present and develop their games is going to be the deciding factor.
My one disappointment about PS4 is lack of Ratchet and Clank games , they’ve big guilty pleasure of mine so hoping for more on PS5. So hope to see 2/3 this time round
@jdv95 Beats me, sadly it would be the same the other way around. Too many idiots drag the collective IQ down and all that.
@ShulkZetta I hear you though I think there are reasons for the games you mentioned, Death Stranding was always going to go to PC and Sony wasn't keen to say anything.
Personally once Guerilla got involved they should have amended the deal.
As for Detroit well a cynical part of me reckons they didn't want to work with Quantic Dream again (especially with that court case that they just got found guilty on) so they were getting the last amounts of revenue before they potentially become damaged goods.
I also think as long as PS Now is on PC there isn't really much incentive to put their biggest exclusives on there natively. If PC gamers are that desperate to play GoW, Uncharted etc then they either get PS Now or a PS4 and if they don't want to do either then Sony should question whether they want those players's custom. After all Sony will want them to invest in the PlayStation ecosystem and if PC players are just going to pick and choose a few games from them then Sony don't gain anything in the long term.
Is this saying all Microsoft first party games will be on PlayStation, Switch, and PC with Nonexclusive? I think someone it twisting the facts.
Cross generation games could be made but due to time and cost they are not. Its possible on a console they could work just like PS4 to PS4Pro. I said I will not be buying AAA games in 2020! If they are forward compatible I would not have to worry about waiting for a PS5 exclusive version.
Even multiplat will be new gen only at some point (i.e. Ps5, Scarlet and Pc). PlayStation is just ahead of the curve as usual and with real exclusives.
This ColtEastwood talking non sense. Jason was clear the first time and not saying any "scoop" either.
@RogerRoger
Hahaha puddle simulator! Read that and laughed out loud. Thank you for that.
I've said it since 2013, cross-gen gaming is a terrible idea. Halo Infinite is being held back by the Xbox One, that is a fact. MS doesn't make exclusives anymore, another fact. There is no reason to buy Scarlett without exclusives, fact. Sony continuing to release exclusive games will ensure their brand remains strong while MS continues shifting 3rd party, fact.
More Ratchet is always be a good thing (i still hold out hope for a final small scale ps4 exclusive like into the nexus but seems unlikely at this point)
I still think Horizon Zero Dawn 2 will be a launch title, but that may be over optimistic
@B-I-G-DEVIL R&C should never be anyone's guilty pleasure. The games are awesome.
@ShulkZetta Did you, er, read the article?
@JohnKarnes No, it's saying that Scarlett games will also launch on Xbox One.
Why can't Microsoft just give up on the X1 it's been a disaster. Start again. We need competition and reasons to own the next one.
A new jet set radio and Kotor (single player) designed specifically for the xbox 4 and I would find it incredibly hard to resist.
But no we get X1 games which as we know are massively constrained by the cpu. Great work Microsoft.
I get third party devs will release games cross-gen at first. It happened with the PS4, it'll happen with the PS5.
Thing is, I like it when games finally turn to being next gen only. It really helps fully utilize the hardware without any limitations holding games back for previous gen. So of course Sony's first party games that are released on the same day as the PS5 will be PS5 only, they want to utilize the hardware and sell the console.
@get2sammyb They didn't say forever and its a good thing for the first year during the transition. I did switch from PS4 to PS4Pro based on what the hardware could do. Not because it had exclusive games. I will buy a PS5 day one for the same reason. Some Dev's port next gen to last gen because of its install base. I don't see the First year hurting the sale of new hardware for that limited time.
Is this our first E3 2020 Leak?
Well I'd hope so. It's the only way I'm buying a PS5 at launch is if theirs first party games at launch that blow me away.
@AdamNovice them Xbots are pure toxic scum, i mean who's sad enough to score points off articles like that 🤔
@get2sammyb I did but it simply made me think or the state of PlayStation exclusives as a whole. I just get the feeling Sony will slowly experiment with more PC releases just like Microsoft are doing..which I think is a bad strategy on the long run.
At some point clear cut in next gen need to happen, if not console will be just like pc, there's no next gen in there, just resolutions and framerate and that's it, with the occasional rtx since apparently that's the only effect pc know.
@ShulkZetta Did you even read the articles? Sony will have ps5 exclusives, it's xbox that didn't have next-gen exclusives because their games will be available on xbox one consoles.
Dear Insomniac,
Please give us a new Resistance game.
Thank you.
Yay Sly 5 confirmed!
@BarefootBowser
What do you mean Sony start from zero again next year?
It's been said a while ago ps4 is where they still make money for the next few years.
Besides Ms can tell whatever tale they wish, I think third party will drop current gen consoles at some point.
@Knuckles-Fajita The Last Of Us was a bit different, a remastered version with the Left Behind expansion and was released for PS4 roughly a year after it came out for ps3. It wasn't a launch title which came out at the same time as the last gen version.
What the PS5 is going to get it's own games? That's disgusting, why would I ever want to buy a new console if all it offered was new games?
If anything I think Microsoft is making a huge mistake with Halo Infinite, the lse new consoles are going to have huge CPU and memory streaming advantages potentially opening up brand new ways to make and interact with games, so why on Earth would you want to limit that possibility by tying it to the frankly underpowered Xbox One S of all things. It might make sense of there were 100 million Xbox's out there but there isn't
Lets face it, the Xbox One is already a basic PC with a form of Windows OS.
All Xbox exclusives come out on both Xbox & PC at same time.
Xbox One X is same as a regular Xbox One, but with faster hardware, therefore the in game 'dials' are turned up to 10 to allow for better performance - exact same as having a basic PC graphics card and a high end one giving difference performance depending on their specification.
The Scarlett will be more of this ethos, so basically Scarlett created games will be 'dialled down' to run on an Xbox One, but they will be the same game.
PS5 also follows this similar PC architecture model and with the PS4 Pro have a similar ethos.
However what splits the companies is the software and operating system which SONY makes to be highly specialised and optimised to their system alone - we've already heard this regarding there new SSD software.
So, Scarlett games will still be developed with Xbox One in mind meaning they will never progress much further beyond those specifications as the lowest common denominator, except with a few more bells and whistles.
The PS5 games will diverge further away from what the PS4 can do as it's life progresses and will probably leave the Scarlett behind in what it's exclusives can do, seeing as game development will not be constrained by having to cater for what the PS4 can produce at an acceptable level.
This seems interesting for MS if this is the strategy. MS strategy is clearly not to have generations and exclusives because their aim is to sell subscriptions. Microsoft is all about SaaS.
The issue is that game development and technology is all about user base. This is often the complaint of PC gamers - they are effectively held back by the computing capability of the console generation because they have a huge user base. In the cross over period between gens, games rarely hit their stride as they need to model across generations. However within a couple of years. the hardware is known and devs begin to push it.
I just can't see third party developers wanting to downgrade releases for the XB1. People always think about graphics but actually, there is a huge focus on computing power for AI, loading etc. The PS5 and PC game market are going to want to see a generational leap and in 2 years time, supporting this gen will be difficult and expensive?
The fact that haters are claiming this is a "bad move" on Twitter is kinda embarrassing. Sony has been doing this since forever and they'll be good as always, I mean you need games to sell consoles, if you put those games on the older hardware you're doing nothing.
@BarefootBowser and that's why the ps5 will sell units if sony does this. that's the whole point. in the past no one would have said this to be an issue cause it was not. this tactic is what sells the new system.
while the xbox scarlet might not be that big of a seller.
it's also bad for the scarlet in the long run if all future xbox exclusives will have to work on the xbox one while the scarlet only serves as a higher end model.
@BarefootBowser
Yea that's why third party games are cross gen at launch. Its not an issue with first party though. The point of exclusives is precisely to attract and grow a bigger install base but what do I know?
@jdv95
'in the past no one would have said this to be an issue'
Exactly. It's still not an issue but people got brainwashed with Ms forwards compatibility total bs. It's all smoke and mirrors and when they realise it they will cheer about third party using the new gen potential without questioning anything as if that's what they meant haha
@JJ2 it's just sad to see xbox fanboys calling out the ps5 for getting exclusives games but not for ps4 as it's a bad thing.
the same thing that has happened with every new console in the last 20 years,is now a bad thing to them, all in the name for keeping the previous console relevant?
what?
how can those people even find logic in their reasoning? if the ps4 will keep geting support from third parties than why can't the ps5 get exclusive first party games? it's so stupid to dismiss the one main reason that people buy a new system as a bad thing.
by following xbox logic no one should realy care about the scarlet and just not buy it,since all games both third and first party will be on all current gen xbox systems, unless you care for more power. so in other words scarlet will just be a one X 2.0 with more power but nothing to show why you should get the scarlet over the one x software wise.
i mean sure they are investing in exclusives but what's the point if none of them will only run on the next gen system, again the main reason to get a new console?
it will increase MS output for xbox sales sure but not for the scarlet but rather the one x.
if so than you could go almost as far as to say that the scarlet is pointless and even DOA.
What if... Project Scarlett is just a reboxed XB1 with a firmware update which FINALLY activates that second GPU, and all the Xbots finally get to say, "WE DUN TOLD YOU SO!!!11!!1!11!!" 🤔😱😳
WTF!?!? I wanted all my future PlayStation games to play on my PS4 and PS3 and PS2 and PS1 I can't wait to see PS5 only games on the erm PS5
@JJ2 Colteastwood is a HUGE Xbot in the YouTube community. Check his videos lol. He has made a fool of himself countless times. He is one of those guys that call single player games 1 and done and talking about console war.
Things in gaming can generally change faster than the wind. The only constant I have ever known is the golden rule and it goes like this 'He who has the gold makes the rules'
@Shepard93n7 Man those are Xbox fanboys lead by Colteastwood. They bashed Sony for saying they are going to push AAA early on PS5 instead of indies. They want Sony to make the same mistakes as M$. They know the Scarlett is DOA with no exclusives.
@JJ2 One benefit is that Sony's first party engines will migrate easy to PS5 since it is the same arhitecture and they can easily add to them. This transition will be the smoothest because of that.
@jdv95 no, it has already been confirmed that every new microsoft 1st party game will also be on pc so the term "xbox console exclusive" is now a thing of the past.
@BarefootBowser sub 1s load times is definitely game changing. this tech will also remove pop-in and allow for much larger draw distance and environments in general. all that compute power will vastly improve AI and phsyics as well; something the ps4 won't be able to handle. if we want our games to be built from the ground up and fully optimized, then no, console gaming cannot take the pc approach. the pc scene is utterly fragmened due to the myriads upon myriads of hardware possibilities and as a result, you are left with poorly optimized games with serious bugs and performance problems in many cases... something you rarely see (or at least very little relative to pc) with 1st party console games. the last thing we need is for consoles to adopt the same mentality as pc gaming... that would be the worst thing to happen to the gaming industry. the ps4 "pro" model was a slap in the face to console gaming in itself, but hopefully that is as far as it goes.
Ps5 only titles will eat Scarlett for breakfast if that's the case
@GodGamer
He was coming up on my twitter for some reason and I muted him haha
@BarefootBowser That developers might choose to use faster storage to improve gameplay rather than reduce loading times doesn’t mean that we won’t benefit from the fast storage.
Games have a minimum requirement that if you don’t meet they won’t work properly. Whilst you can turn off graphical bells and whistles if the core of the game is too demanding then it won’t be able to move to a less powerful system.
