Action role-playing title Code Vein has sold over 1 million copies worldwide, publisher Bandai Namco has announced. The game, often referred to as 'anime Dark Souls', launched in September last year, and recently it received its first expansion, 'Hellfire Knight'.
It's not a bad result for a game that released during such a busy period -- especially one that was always going to lack mainstream appeal. And with more DLC in the pipeline, Code Vein has the potential to remain reasonably popular over the course of 2020.

I absolutely loved the game, and I am looking forward to revisiting it soon to start the Hellfire Knight DLC.
It's well deserved, and I hope a sequel is in the works!
The world and characters were really interesting, and the gameplay was really fun and flashy.
I played the demo but wasn't sure about it at the time. For those that have beaten it, is it easier than the Souls games or about the same?
I actually forgot about this game. I’m surprised it has sold fairly decent, not for lack of quality, but because there hasn’t been as much buzz about it.
@Kalvort I think it's a lot easier. It can still be difficult at times, and certain bosses can be really hard without the right prep.
You get an AI partner to help you throughout the game, and they can buff you and even revive you.
The best partner is Yakumo. He just does a crap-ton of damage and is a tank so having him with you is great to feel the game out.
You will totally die a lot though. That's just part of the gameplay loop. Everyone dies a lot when they play, at least at first.
@Constable_What Thank you for that! I have added it to my to-play list...
After playing a bit of Sekiro, I need something a little more forgiving!!!! I made it to the 4th main boss in that game, beat him, then never came back. Although I really should. It really is a great (but extremely difficult) game.
@Kalvort You're welcome!
Yeah, Sekiro was very difficult. Especially considering that the gameplay is so different from Dark Souls, but still has so much in common with it. Muscle memory from playing hundreds of hours of Souls-like games really screwed me over sometimes.
Code Vein has so many more options to overcome the difficulty. You get insanely powerful towards the end of the game with all the abilities the game will give you from exploring the world and its story and characters.
It's very well designed in that aspect especially.
...Code Vein was really amazing, it was a lot easier than DS (but still a decent challenge) - however it did get slightly repetitive towards the end and once complete, I have no interest in revisiting via DLC (it's short-lived but excellent whilst it lasts!) ... Sekiro is still THE best DS-alike, the verticality, and soooo difficult (until you learn how to parry and when to dodge!) even then... oooof, it's a killer! (loved every minute, cannot wait for the inevitable sequel!)
