How much will the PS5 cost? It's a question that many potential buyers are eager to have answered, but going by what was said at Sony's latest investor's call, the company itself hasn't settled on a price point yet. Chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki commented that it's "very difficult" to nail down cost right now -- chiefly because there are so many factors to consider.
After mentioning things like manufacturing costs and promotion, Totoki spoke briefly about the competition -- that being the Xbox Series X. "What is not very clear or visible is because we are competing in the space, so it’s very difficult to discuss anything about the price at this point of time," Totoki reiterates.
He continues: "It's a question of balance, and because it’s a balancing act it’s very difficult to say anything concrete at this point of time, but when I said smooth transition, we mean that we will definitely choose the optimal approach and that we will try to have the best balance so that we will be profitable during the life of this product."
This isn't the first time that Sony has referenced a "smooth transition". The Japanese giant is looking to move existing fans over to its next-gen machine as seamlessly as possible, and alongside an attractive PS5 price point, functionality like backwards compatibility plays a big part in fulfilling that goal.
Again, going by Totoki's comments, it seems as though Sony's yet to decide on a retail price for its upcoming system. And if Sony's not sure, then you can probably start ruling out any of these crazy "leaks" that highlight how much the PS5 will cost when it launches later this year.

I’ve only just got a Pro so I’ll probably wait a wee bit for its first big price drop or for major exclusives to release.
$500 max, maybe $600 if the tech is really good. I rather have $500 with great specs rather than $400 with just good specs.
Whatever the price ends up being, it best not have the digits '599.99' or be mentioned with the phrase "work two jobs to buy one."
#RememberTheIdesOf3
I'm gearing up for a £450-£500 price, though if the latter, I'd like a [half-decent] pack-in game as part of that, or a promotional PS+ sub included (such as 3 months "free") etc.
again i stand by the fact that if you want to keep the specs the ps5 is supposed to have than you can not expect anything under 450 at least.
500 is a very fair and the most realistic price to ask.
if you want it to be no more than 400 than you will end up with ps4 specs and we can all agree that is not the way to go.
and keep in mind that sony will already sell the console at a loss per unit if it is 500. so wishing or even demanding (yes the internet does that) it to be nothing more than 399 is unrealistic and frankly stupid.
So waiting for MS to show their hand to see what they can get away with, then.
Not that I really begrudge them, consoles offer great value for money overall.
I wonder what discount I can get if I trade my ps4 and psvr towards it.
@LieutenantFatman Dunno where you living at mate, but if it's anything like Barbados you'll probably get a discount of maybe $50 on the price of the PS5 when you trade in your console and headset. Mind you, a new base PS4 costs $900 still, and the PSVR costs about $1100. I shudder to think what the PS5 will cost when it reaches these shores.
I’m hoping for 450 with ps+ and psn helping to offset losses.
Ultimately as long as the ‘cheaper’ Xbox that’s supposedly launching isn’t too much cheaper then Sony should be fine in terms of sales.
I hope for 499 euro because I believe that they wont make a mistake again.
@Turismo4GT I don't know where you are from. I know in Brazil is too higher for PS4. Here is only 299 euro and VR is only 250-299 euro. Cheaper.
With BC everyone will be trading in the PS4 expect the amount to given for a PS4 to drop very low fast even on Ebay.
Any price over $100 more than the base PS4 and PS4 Pro at launch ($399 USD + tax) will make many potential buyers pause on the purchase. While a few million may not mind any price for PS5 it will never hit the sales numbers of PS4 if its over priced to the mass market.
@Turismo4GT sony put a working ps2 inside a ps3 AND a bluray player. Which were $1000 dollars stand alone when ps3 released. It was actually one of the best tech deals ever lol. Delivery was wrong.
Not too concerned with the price honestly. Expecting $500, already have it set aside. Will preorder as soon as they let us!
@JohnKarnes my ps4 has PT. Will never be traded lol
@kyleforrester87 "waiting for MS to show their hand"
That's how I read it.
"because there are so many factors to consider.'
He basically said there really is only 1 factor - what does XSX cost?
This is a refreshing read. He shouldn't know how much it costs yet, it doesn't even launch for another 6-8 months. Brexit, coronavirus, competition. For all we know they haven't even started building it yet so he doesn't even know what the factories are going to charge him to build it, or how much the parts are going to cost.
They might not even have finalized the SSD size.
Then there's other prices, like how much can they raise the price of PS+ to before people rebel to make up some of the costs? Is it time to make games $69.99 yet? (Nintneod moved all of it's $39 3DS games onto Switch, now they're all $59.)
I'm sure they have a ballpark they want to hit, probably either $399 or $499, but it's probably too early to tell.
As long as it isn't over £550 then we are all good as unless the launch up is flawless then I won't want to shell out potentially £650+ on a mediocre line up.
It'll depends on what it can do if it's only backwards compatible with PS4 and cost 500 then I'll wait but if they say some exclusives go to PC then I won't even buy it and just get a new PC, but if it has backwards compatibility from PS1 to PS4 even if it's 600 I'll buy it day one
I will be waiting until the first revision - i.e. once they release the console with a bigger storage drive, a decent bundle etc. I am always a little dubious about buying at launch due to (in my opinion, rightly or wrongly) increased risks of the consoles having issues (think 360's red light of death).
@rjejr They'll certainly have a lower level in mind, but there's no point in unnecessarily knocking £50 or even £25 off a unit if they don't have to.
I think it'll be $500, or rather $499 with retail pricing.
I'm going to wait until there's a few decent games out for it before I slap my eddies down.
Sony will be waiting on Microsoft. After last launch Microsoft will be waiting on Sony. Who ever over builds and has to charge a much higher price will Lose the sales war.
I'm praying they do BC with emulation.
PS1 & PS2 would be very easy. PS3 could come later.
If all it does is PS4, that's going to be disappointing for me.
Whatever the price will be parents will start saving now or when if it gets announced, ready for Christmas and Sony better have a lot built by then. Across the world but I can see multiple launches Japan and America together and the UK a week later
@azoreseuropa I'm from Barbados. Beautiful country, but video gaming is an expensive pastime.
I’d happily pay £450-£500 for the PS5. We have to realise the amount of power built into it and that doesn’t come cheap. Then consider the ultra-fast SSD drive Sony have been talking about, and what I assume will be about 16GB of DDR6 Ram. I’m sure the AMD CPU and GPU must be costly, too. It all adds up! To be fair I think we have to be prepared to pay for all that tech.
I believe they know how much their gonna charge, they just don’t want to say and try to give MS the edge.
I believe it will be between 449-499 euros. Sony will try to bring the price below 500 cause it is an important factor and is so healthy economically the last years that can handle the losses. And nowadays they make more money from psn, games and accessories,
Maybe Sony could really make a bang and bring the price below 449! Can you imagine promoting its new console with this price tag? It’s a sure win and that is what matters down the road.
It’s worth subsidizing the cost to build the install base and push subscription services. Hell, the software sales were well over a billion! Upfront loss for long term gain.
@GKO900 Agreed with everything you said.
@kyleforrester87 "a lower level in mind"
Thanks for reminding me. 1 other point I forgot in my pre-caffeine rambling this morning - and so far everyone else has as well - was PS4 Pro.
Currently in the US PS4 Pro is MSRP $399. It can be had on sale and cheaper if you look, but that's the price. So Sony kind of has a bottom b/c they really can't launch their new "state of the art" console the same price or less than the 3 year old model.
I've been saying for a year or so now I think they dump both PS4 and PS4 Pro for one combined model - Pro on the inside, Slim on the outside, for $299, maybe $249 when the PS5 launches. I just dont' think they can have 3 models on the market at once. And it's hard to justify dumping either. They can't dump the $199 Slim b/c that's for bargain hunters, and they can't dump the Pro leaving the slim on the market b/c people would be like - why dump the better system, dump the cheaper one instead. I think combining them into 1 model is the only choice.
So, the reason they dont' have a PS5 price yet isn't only b/c of Xbox, but b/c they don't know yet what to do w/ PS4 and PS4 Pro. They really need to sort that out first. Sure, they can keep all 3 on store shelves, but that's a lot of space in those small Gamestop stores. So it's not just a PS5 price, it's:
PS4 -
PS4 Pro -
PS5 -
or
PS4 Pro Slim -
PS5 -
Can't price 1 w/o taking the others into account.
@JohnKarnes I know everyone is banging on about the backwards compatibility but as someone who has a 4TB external HDD attached to my PS4 I'm gonna keep it I think...it is full lol.
Sony can win the next generation straight away by announcing £399.
I think £400 would be my limit.
Whatever happens i'll pick one up eventually but that will be my limit when it first launches
When I said all these ridiculous rumours supposedly knowing the price of ps5 AND SeX haha
Instant dismiss those.
I like when he said 'we are competing .. ..it’s very difficult to discuss...'(price)
😎
Hopefully it wont be extortionate seen as I will need too splash out for 2, one for me and one for the boy. I'm hoping the 2 will come in at under a grand otherwise i may end up sharing my sons till a price drop
It has been 7 years since I bought a new Playstation. So feel it is time for an upgrade. But 599 is my limit.
But in reality - The PC upgrades I made to play RayTracing and VR games was a lot more than that.
PS4 and PS4 Pro both launched at £399 I believe, so that will be the minimum. And this talk of the premium power and performance makes we think around £449 a realistic price. Unless they go full on '$599 Dollars, get a second job to buy one' Sony.
I'll do a Colt Eastwood impression. Typical YouTube click bait video titled $300xbox series X more powerful than $1000 ps5.
400 USD is what a want, specially if PS5 end up being less powerfull than XB SeX.
I can go to 500 USD if they end up with some really buff system or some shadow drop feature. More than that i will pass or wait for a cheaper version in the future.
First I want to clarify I live in Argentina, a country that has a really really bad economy and buying goods in "US dollars" is REALLY expensive, for comparison's sake take this example... for a person with a minimun salary, buying a Playstation 4 Pro (around 600 USD here, but usually prices are 2x of those in US) today equals 2.5 months of work, assuming every cent of your salary goes to buying the PS4.
So, after that "intro", I just can't get, really, I cannot understand why people on "first world countries" cares or complains about console prices. I mean, games are about 60 USD , how many games do a regular gamer buy during a "console generation"? How much of a difference is if PS5 costs 500USD or 600USD or 700USD? I mean, for me, Sony should give it away because I spent many dollars on PSN and games, and I ALSO have to buy the hard? but that's not the point here...
My point is, it's not better to "have to pay" 650 USD for PS5 and get awesome hardware, really ass kicking hardware , instead of 399 or 450 and get some meh or crippled hard? I should also add that $1000 can also be "ok" if you think it will last you 7 years (or whatever a gen last)... a top end smartphone or notebook sells for around $1000 so ... whatever. There you have ; )
I hope I've hurted no one with my comment ; )
@kyleforrester87
It may actually be the opposite. They dont want Ms to know the ps5 price (be it low or high) and let them know how far they can get away with.
Edit
Its actually more likely if you consider Ms Lockheard rumours
Well i was listening to a podcast last week cranky gamers uk, and the guy was saying that a leaked doc surfaced just after xmas on the internet, but was quickly removed from it, but he had managed to take a pic b4 it was taken down, and it said ps5 release 30th oct, price $500 think 2tb, launch games was new killzone, think gran turismo but might have been few months after not sure, horizon zd coming 2021. Ps4 full b/c with some ps3,2,1 at launch and more to be added. I know its speculation but it actually does sound plausable and hopefully true oct would be good and $500 sounds reasonable.
@rjejr I can’t see the point of continuing to manufacture the pro after the PS5 comes out. People wanting the best PlayStation experience will get the PlayStation five. People on a budget will get the slim. They should focus on making the PlayStation four as cheap as possible in order to get more people into the PlayStation ecosystem.
@Ryall That makes sense, and it's the idea they'll probably go with, but at the same time a whole lot of people will be asking - "Why discontinue the Pro and sell an under-powered PS4, why not discontinue the original PS4 and sell the Pro at the PS4 price of $199? Also - Why make a Pro to sell for 2 years if they are just going to discontinue it?
So I think it's not an easy decision for them.
Expecting like everyone else a €499,- price tag whether it’s higher or lower It doesn’t matter as long as the tech is worth it and not just gimmick. The Other aspect that makes the console worth it are the great exclusives, which is almost certain.
@GamerDad66 do you still own PS1 and PS2 discs??? And do you like to see 4:3 games upscaled to 4K tv’s? Do you know how terrible that looks?
@Nyne11Tyme same!!! I wonder if the proxy server re-download trick will work to get it on ps5.
If our existing accounts just transfer over then it might work!!
$500 and it’s day 1 for me. $600 and it’s day 1 of week 2 lol.
@Turismo4GT Cool. Sorry about the console being so expensive for you. You deserve better than that.
minimum i think will be $499/£479/€499, but i could see it being more. whatever the cost, it'll probably be worth it for the tech inside it, a bigger concern for me is that i don't think it'll have anything really worth playing when it launches.
500 or so I'm a day oner. Just because I hate the maybe you can get one next Christmas crap if you miss out. Our Gamestop for PS4 gave 125 trade in for last gen consoles last time. Kind of hoping for something close to the same though I know they are hurting more now than they were then.
I think we’ll be in for about £450/$450 but even that may be sold at a loss judging by the specs. This is why I think the SSD will be small and upgradeable. That way cost can be lower but the user can upgrade as required...
@BorderlineJon Yes I have a 8Tb external about half full. Its my hope we can use them on the PS5.
