Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is a series pretty synonymous with PlayStation. The first game released in the late 90s and became an instant phenomenon, spawning numerous sequels and spin-offs. Of course, these days it's a different story, but 20 years ago, Tony Hawk was just as much a video game legend as a skateboarding one.
The story of how the first title was made will be told in a brand new documentary named Pretending I'm a Superman. Announced by Hawk himself on Instagram, the doc will debut at Mammoth Film Festival at the end of February. It sounds as though the documentary will chart the story of how Hawk came to be involved with Activision's project, the history of skateboarding games, and how the game transformed the sport. Check out the trailer above.
Not since EA's Skate series have we seen a truly great big budget skateboarding title, and there's definitely an appetite for the sport to return to consoles. The documentary feels quite timely; Activision has recently stated it's cooking up various remakes and remasters, and THPS is surely a prime candidate for this treatment.

I’ll definitely give this a watch. Been a lifelong fan of both Hawk and the games so would love to see either a new entry or one set in the golden age of skating.
Nice. Skating games were probably my favourite genre at one point and their fall from grace has been a real shame.
This will definitely be an interesting watch.
Loved these games amazing, remember seeing Hawk at the X-games 2004 in LA when I was 16. Looking forward to the film for sure.
"but 20 years ago"
You had to remind me, didn't you?
I'm not a skateboarding fan never have been but I respect Tony Hawk as an athlete and his achievements in life. I remember the skateboarding boom of the late 90s early 2000s in then UK as well as Rolleeblading. The games were massive as well then it went over to snowboarding games like SSX and not forgetting Matt Hoffman and his BMX stuff another sporting great who I remember
@thebakerswife Yep, skating’s in a great place at the moment, with it being added to the Olympics. Nyjah Huston’s probably the biggest skater at the moment and skating culture is absolutely everywhere. Thrasher gear is worn by even the most mainstream of teens and a lot of streetwear brands were all originally skate shops. In terms of seeing it on the streets, I see it quite a bit around Glasgow but a lot of young people now just go to the local skate park. I did see someone grind down a stairwell but they face planted spectacularly 😅
Sod the documentary, just give us remasters of the games finally!!
The soundtracks to the first couple of games were almost better than the games themselves.
And seeing as this one gives the name for the doc..

Been following this project for a while, good to see it reaching the finishing line.
Meh Skate 1,2,3 all the way is so much better.
tony hawks 1&2 where great but ea skate is much much better.
So.Many.Student.Hours.Wasted!! Actually remember v little of the game other than we were always wasted and we had to put perfect grind setting on. Would love a remake/new one that's decent. Matt Hoffman's games used to be good too
I always was terrible at the titles, but my wife was amazing. Where she failed was the ability to locate the letters, i.e. S-K-A-T-E. Meanwhile I could always find them. My scan was always wide open, while she always concentrated on the combos. So between the two of us, we spent many quality hours together trying to complete the levels/cities. I'd locate the missing letter and hand her the controller. Great exploration titles. We'd gladly accept Remasters!!
