The PlayStation 2 is celebrating its 20th anniversary today, and while Sony’s commitment to its PS2 Classics program has been awful, we've been pondering which last-last-gen titles deserve the upscale-and-Trophies treatment on the company's current console. While we had planned to put together a short list, the Japanese giant's legendary system had so many hits that it's practically impossible to condense things, so we've gone all out instead. We've tried to focus on games that haven't already received the remaster treatment (like Final Fantasy XII, for example). Without further ado, then, let's get this underway.
Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies
Part of Sony's infamous fall 2001 flyby which included various legendary exclusives like Grand Theft Auto III and ICO, Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies was a fine arcade dogfighting title that would surely whet appetites ahead of upcoming PS4 entry, Ace Combat 7.
Auto Modellista
Perhaps best remembered for its art style rather than its racing, Auto Modellista's cel-shaded look deserves to be seen by a new generation.
Beyond Good & Evil
It did get a high-definition remaster on the PlayStation 3, but seeing as that version's unlikely to make the leap, Jade's cult classic platformer Beyond Good & Evil deserves to find a home on the PS4 – especially if rumours regarding a sequel are accurate.
Black
It's showing its age now, but Criterion's first-person shooter Black was a technical tour-de-force at the time of the release.
Burnout 3: Takedown
Arguably the best entry in the series, Burnout 3: Takedown is for many the ultimate arcade racer. It may lack Burnout Paradise's open world, but it makes up for it with some of the tightest driving you can find on any console.
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3
Widely regarded as the best Dragon Ball Z game to ever grace a home console, Budokai 3 had it all: an amazing character roster, tons of content to blast through, and a fantastic combat system with some truly spectacular special moves.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
It's just re-released on the Nintendo 3DS, where it's earning rave reviews. And it's no surprise: Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is peak JRPG, and remains one of the best examples of the genre on the PS2 among intense competition.
Freedom Fighters
In the midst of an onslaught of Hitman games, Danish developer IO Interactive quietly deployed the underrated Freedom Fighters, a third-person shooter with a squad-heavy focus.
God Hand
Talked about more for its infamous IGN review, God Hand is a third-person beat-'em-up that splits opinion like no other – and we'd love for the conversation to be revisited.
God of War (and God of War II)
The PS3 remasters were excellent, but with no means of playing them on the PS4, we'd like to see God of War and its technically impressive successor wield the Blades of Chaos via PS2 emulation if nothing else.
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (and Vice City Stories)
Rockstar brought these PlayStation Portable titles to the PS2 pretty promptly, and while they don't really compare to the main trilogy, it'd still be nice to get these on the PS4 – for the sake of completion above all.
GUN
Before Red Dead Redemption, there was another open world sheriff in town. GUN can't really compare to Rockstar's legendary Spaghetti Western, but it's still a fun third-person shooter that's aged better than you may imagine.
Half-Life
One of the most influential games of all-time, the PS2 port of Half-Life is showing its age these days, but would still offer an important history lesson for younger players on the PS4.
Hot Shots Golf Fore!
Irritating puns aside, the PS4 is crying out for some Hot Shots Golf goodness, and with Clap Hanz taking an eternity to bring the newest entry to Sony's new-gen system, why not bring back this classic?
ICO
We weren't sure whether to include this one. Bluepoint's brilliant PS3 remaster fixed many of the problems with ICO, but even if we have to deal with the technical issues that plagued the PS2 original, we reckon that any PlayStation console is better when blessed with as many Fumito Ueda titles as possible.
James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing
Licensing issues mean that this one is unlikely, but there was a period where EA Games was pumping out pretty cool original spy stories, and James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing was our favourite.
Katamari Damacy
Absolutely off-its-rocker but still a must-play, you'd be surprised by how well Katamari Damacy holds up in this day and age.
Killer7
A bizarre mix of first-person shooting and on-rails exploration, Killer7 was peak Suda51 – and with games like The Silver Case making a comeback, we'd love an excuse to revisit this cel-shaded oddity.
Killzone
The so-called Halo killer was anything but, but Guerrilla Games' first foray into the story of the Helghast holds an important place in PlayStation history.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (and Snake Eater)
Two of the greatest games ever made for the PS2, there have been many ports and remasters of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and its successor, but you're not exactly going to turn down one more, are you?
MotorStorm: Arctic Edge
A very late PS2 game that launched simultaneously with a PSP version, many missed out on MotorStorm: Arctic Edge's extremely enjoyable snow-capped arcade racing.
Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast
Another title likely to be affected by licensing issues, Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast re-imagined Yu Suzuki's legendary arcade racing game for a new generation, and is still enjoyable today.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Mechanics introduced in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time can still be found in many games today, and while it's undoubtedly aged as a platformer, this is still an incredible game.
Ratchet & Clank Trilogy
The original recently got remade for the PS4, making the Ratchet & Clank Trilogy an awkward candidate for PS2 emulation. We still reckon that these legendary action platformers have enough to offer to make a port worthwhile.
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
It may be lesser known than its successor, but Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 is an essential slice of JRPG action – and a must-play for fans of the more recent games.
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
It's at its best in PlayStation Vita port Persona 4 Golden, but with so many skipping on Sony's handheld, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 deserves to be played by as many people as possible – especially with Persona 5 proving so popular on the PS4.
Silent Hill 2 (and Shattered Memories)
It's perhaps the greatest survival horror game ever made: Silent Hill 2 may feel clunky by modern standards, but its twisted tale is still harrowing today. We'd like to see the classic joined by Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, an extremely late PS2 port that has some interesting psychological ideas that deserve to be seen.
Sly Cooper Trilogy
For our money, Sly Cooper is the best of Sony's platforming protagonists, and Sucker Punch's trilogy of PS2 titles is arguably more consistent than what Naughty Dog and Insomniac Games delivered during the era.
SoulCalibur II
It may not have featured a particular pointy-haired elf, but the PS2 version of SoulCalibur II is still a classic thanks to its rock-solid combat and sprawling campaign.
SSX Tricky
At a time when extreme sports games were all the rage, SSX Tricky brought brash colours and unforgettable gameplay. Given the absence of similar titles, this would prove a breath of fresh air on the PS4.
Star Wars: Battlefront II
Licensing issues mean that it will never happen, but for many Star Wars: Battlefront II is the best adaptation of George Lucas' cinematic sci-fi universe.
Super Bust-a-Move
The baby box art may have been a bit baffling, but Super Bust-a-Move remains one of the most entertaining puzzlers that money can buy. Launch it onto the PS4 so we can pop those bubbles all over again.
Super Monkey Ball Deluxe
A compilation of two of the GameCube's most enjoyable games, Super Monkey Ball Deluxe is a meaty arcade puzzler brimming with mini-games and monkeying around.
Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror (and Logan's Shadow)
Two PSP titles that eventually found their way to the PS2, Sony Bend's stealth shooters plot super-spy Gabe Logan against nefarious organisations, and definitely deserve to sneak their way onto the PS4.
Tales of Symphonia
For many PS2 players Tales of Symphonia was their first taste of Namco's action RPG series, and it still stands today as one of its best instalments. A memorable cast of characters and a huge world made it a cel-shaded gem.
Tekken Tag Tournament
Tekken Tag Tournament Famous for its tight tag-team action and mind-blowing visuals at the time, Tekken Tag Tournament is still a fighting game worth playing in an era when Bandai Namco’s brawler was the undisputed king of the genre.
The Getaway (and Black Monday)
We'd argue that without The Getaway and its sequel Black Monday, there'd simply be no Uncharted. With a heavy cinematic focus, these cover-based shooters were tough to play but a set a new bar for visual presentation on the PS2, and their gangland vibe is still quite unlike anything else on consoles today.
The Simpsons: Hit & Run
There was a time when every popular genre – from wrestling to skateboarding – was parodied by The Simpsons license, and it prompted some pretty good games. The Simpsons: Hit & Run was Grand Theft Auto in Springfield, and it remains a favourite among fans.
Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge
Did you know that Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge was made by many of the same people behind Devil May Cry? It may be a licensed title, but this one plays surprisingly well.
TimeSplitters 2
An obligatory inclusion, we suppose. TimeSplitters 2 is, for many, the GoldenEye of their era – a split-screen first-person shooter with great maps and gunplay. Bring it back.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3
Tony Hawk was very much the Call of Duty of its day – a complete Activision cash cow that grinded out ridiculous review scores and sales numbers alike. Everyone has their own personal favourite, but Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 was the pinnacle as far as we’re concerned.
Tomb Raider Anniversary
Lara Croft didn't exactly have the greatest time on the PS2, but Tomb Raider Anniversary was a pretty decent remake of the original game by Crystal Dynamics, and while the series' gameplay has evolved more recently, it'd be great to go back to the series' puzzle platforming roots.
Viewtiful Joe
Hideki Kamiya's handsome side-scrolling beat-'em-up was originally part of the Capcom Five, which means that it inevitably ended up on the PS2 not long after its GameCube launch. Its art style still holds up, even if its gameplay is hard-as-nails.
WipEout Pulse
WipEout Fusion is widely considered the black sheep of the series, so we'd rather see PSP port WipEout Pulse get the emulation treatment. This one only released in Europe originally, but it's a great racer, and paved the way for WipEout HD.
Yakuza (and Yakuza 2)
The original two entries in the Yakuza series may have gotten the remake treatment with the Kiwami sub-series, but we'd like to see the original two PS2 titles ported to the PS4 – especially given the success that the series has seen lately.
An impressive list that could easily be twice as long! Which games are we missing? Are there any titles here that you're desperate to play again on the PS4? Reveal your retro side in the comments section below.

PS2 was an absolute monster, wasn't it? I could have worked on this article for another day and easily doubled the list.
I didn't even know Super Monkey Ball deluxe existed. Now make it happen Sony and Sega and take my money.
I wouldn't mind a Timesplitters trilogy game or another bash on Outrun C2C.
Im probably the only one with this i rather see remasters of these games.
I loved GUN, I think it didn't get as much coverage as it could have releasing at the end of the gen.
@Flaming_Kaiser Remasters for many of these would be absolutely amazing, but it's unlikely to ever happen due to just how much time and money it would take. Our likeliest chance of playing these again is getting Sony to work harder on its PS2 Classics program, and the cool thing about that initiative is that it incorporates Trophies and spruces up the visuals quite nicely.
@Pink_Floyd I really love GUN, too. I don't often replay games, but I've beaten GUN five or six times over the years on various platforms. I have a really soft spot for it, even though Red Dead Redemption eventually came out and did everything better.
Huh. Most of the games that made me love PlayStation that aren't about right now. Dope.
@get2sammyb You know Beyond Good & Evil sequel/reboot/whatever it is, is confirmed right?
I would pay a ridiculous amount of money for Timesplitters 2 and Burnout 3. I have both on disc, but it's such a pain to bust out the PS2 and old TV just to play a couple games.
Great article - so many to choose from, however did you manage?
For me though you nailed Tomb Raid Anniversary, Gun (I LOVED that game) and Silent Hill.
I would also like IOC and Shadow of the Colossus because, shock horror, I never ever played them. Please Sony, sort these out and I will promise to buy the very next peripheral that you instantly drop and WON'T complain!
Just Timesplitters 2? I thought 3 was better personally! Love them both though!
@get2sammyb "Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed Kingdom is peak JRPG, and remains one of the best examples of the genre on the PS2 among intense competition."
Says the guy who never played it.
"I could have worked on this article for another day and easily doubled the list."
That's OK, 82 isn't any better of a number than 41.
Rather than remaster all of these games, wouldn't it just be easier for Sony to release a combo PS1-PS2-PS3 player that plays all of those discs and and you can buy them on PSN in their native format? The OG PS3 could probably be made and sold for $99. Did you guys have the $99 bright red Wii Mini over there? They could make it Pushsquare blue and call it the PLS, Playstation Legacy System. I'd buy 2. Or just bring back the PS2, they could probably sell that for $49, everybody still owns a functioning PS3 anyway.
Just stick an ethernet port or WiFi chip and a small HDD in here and you're all set.
Maybe put a screen on it and call it the PSwitch.
tl;dr I'd much rather buy new hardware to play all of my old PS2 discs than rebuy all of my old PS2 games digitally.
@BLP_Software Is it? My bad, I must have missed that.
I hope to see Baldur's Gate: DA and the two Champions of Norrath
A lot of games I'd want from that list, but I'll throw in some more:
-DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 3 (No DBZ game will match its greatness)
-FIFA Street 2 (So much fun)
-Need For Speed Underground
-TimeSplitters Future Perfect
-True Crime Street of LA
-True Crime New York City
-SmackDown Vs Raw (No chance of that happening ever, NOT PG)
@get2sammyb It's a cracking list. I would love to play loads of these. I missed many of the classics, so I'd totally be down to try Killer7, Viewtiful Joe, Timesplitters 2 and Outrun '06.
Really wish I still had my PS2 and games. Would love to hammer through some races in Burnout 3 now!
@RedMageLanakyn Yeah, and the cool thing is with PS2 Classics they'd get Trophies and all of the PS4 OS functionality, which for me personally gives me an added incentive to go back.
@Rudy_Manchego You really need to play ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. If you still have your PS3 hooked up, the remasters are incredible and the best way to play them.
@B-I-G-DEVIL Fair. I stuck with TimeSplitters 2 because that's the one I feel most people remember fondly, but as with many others on this list, I think many would be quite satisfied with the sequel as well.
@rjejr PS2 Classics on the PS4 are emulations that hook into many of the PS4's OS features. So, they get upscaled graphics, Trophy support, and share functionality. Definitely the best way for these games to come back, as the new features give added incentive to go back.
@Fight_Teza_Fight Good shouts! I nearly added True Crime actually.
@Quintumply You'd be in for a treat with some of those you missed.
@Melucine
Loved the baulders gate games.
I would love "r type final" more than anything tho. Unfortunately that is highly unlikely.
@get2sammyb I have a few of them, and the added trophies and upscaling is a nice bonus indeed. I picked up Rogue Galaxy and Max Payne cheap, and am pretty tempted by the Humble Playstation bundle that has a few PS2 classics as well.
Id rather play Star Wars battlefront 1 to be honest
2 never really clicked with me the way 1 did.
Okami, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are probably the three games I could just keep buying no matter how many times they're remastered. Just incredible games.
@get2sammyb Yeah it was confirmed. First on Instagram and then to investors and in interviews I believe.
You probably missed it because the rumour around it said Switch exclusive/timed exclusive.
@get2sammyb I don't know, that's all lost on me, trophy's, upscaled graphics. If you want to play the games, play the games, if you want new games, play new games. I didn't get a PS4 for 3 years b/c I felt like all it had was PS3 games upscaled that I already played or didn't want to play. I'll buy a remodeled PS2 to play my old discs, but I want them to focus on NEW games on the PS4 and PS5. Otherwise you have an Xbox One situation where the only games X1 has are Xbox360 games and Rare Replay.
I didn't buy a PS4 for PS2 games, and I wont' buy a PS5 for PS3 and PS4 games in 4k, though that's mostly what it will have the first 2 years.
@BLP_Software Ah, no I did see that. I guess I'm just waiting on that announcement trailer before it's fully officially official in my mind — regardless of platform.
@rjejr I completely agree with you, but the PS4 has more than it's fair share of original games now, so I'd see these as an extra layer of jam in an already extremely indulgent cake. Definitely don't want them in favour of new stuff, but there's no danger of that now, so let's start getting the ball rolling and get some of these classics emulated.
scarface.cold fear.gungrave.maximo
capcom on arcade collection. neo geo collection
@get2sammyb I suppose so. It was more confirmation that its happening. Said they were waiting for appropriate technology to do what they wanted.
And you say PS4 is an indulgent cake? Well...it does LOOK like one.
@BLP_Software Dat triple-layer PS4 Pro.
@get2sammyb black still a great looking game so I don't know what are you talking about.
@get2sammyb Yo I will turn up to your house with that cake XD
So many awesome games. I personally prefer Persona 3 to Persona 4, though, so if I had to pick one it would be P3. Why not both?
Would love to see Burnout 3: Takedown brought to the PS4. I spent many of hours playing that on the PS2, and would happily do so again on the PS4.
Would like to see The Simpsons: Hit & Run get brought over too, classic game!
@Jake3103 Why not both indeed!
DQ 8 was my first DQ game & and it blew me away with the art , characters , sound track and that huge open world . I put 96 hours into it and loved every minute.
@get2sammyb "so let's start getting the ball rolling and get some of these classics emulated."
Well which is it, do you want "emulation" or remasters w/ better graphics and trophy support?
Know what's easier than a new PS2 or new remastered games, PS Now. Isn't that the entire point of that service, play old PS games on your PS3, PS4 or PC? They can do emulation now, they don't need to remaster.
Sorry if I jumped on your use of emulation, that wasn't very nice of me, no offense, I was heading to PS Now my next post anyway though.
DQ8 & Burnout 3 would be essential if they both got moved to the PS2 section of the store, nice seeing TNBC Oggies Revenge getting a mention still have my PS2 copy but its a good shout.
no love for Onimusha? for shame!!
anything that's being remade (Yakuza) or ported to the PS3 shouldn't be added imo.
@get2sammyb PS2 is still the finest console in creation for me so much good came from that little black marvel
@rjejr I think you're completely missing the point here, man. PS2 Classics on PS4 is an emulator that upgrades the graphics, ties them into the PS4's OS, and enables the addition of Trophies. They're not remasters, they're upgraded emulations.
And if they expand the library of these emulations on the PS4, then that will help PlayStation Now in the long-run, but we're getting way off-topic here.
I'd add Persona 3 to the list too. I know Persona 4 has a wider audience but P3 was great as well
@get2sammyb Thanks for including Ace Combat 4, AC 5 & Zero are also big favorites of mine.
What? No Rumble Roses? Lol
I'd love to see Killer7, true DMC, and God Hand on PS4. I'd pick Persona 3 FES for PS2 classics instead though, and port P4 Golden to PS4.
DQ8's a good pick too, because I really would love to play it.
The only additions I'd make are licensed stuff like Marvel vs Capcom 2, unknown stuff like Neo Geo Battle Colosseum (or any PS2 KOF), and Gran Turismo 3.
Still don't understand why so few of the PlayStation greats are playable on PS4 or even PS Now. Surely it can't be that difficult to get licensing and ports/emulation of so many of these games and there's clearly a market for it.
@get2sammyb "PlayStation Now in the long-run, but we're getting way off-topic here."
I'm starting to feel like every time you dont' agree w/ something you just say "off topic". I don't see how PS Now can be "off topic" playing PS2 games on PS4 if part of PS Now's appeal is the ability to play PS2 games on the PS4.
"I think you're completely missing the point here,"
OK, I'll give you that one, I didn't realize you were talking about simply letting the PS4 hardware do it's thing like an upscaling DVD player. But still, woudln't people have to take the time to write those trophies, they aren't going to simply appear b/c you threw the game on the PS4. And why do 15 year old games need trophies added anyway? Trophy farming? Big whoop. People should play these old games b/c they are classic, not just so they can pad their trophy count. OK, maybe now we're getting off topic.
The PS2 remains the greatest console ever. There's just so many games to choose from but with licenses expiring and publishers and developers becoming defunct it probably wouldn't happen for a lot of the more obscure titles. :-/
I'd love to play Dragon Quest VIII again. It could maybe happen being the series 30th anniversary and all. Other than that, I reckon the Shadow Hearts games deserve another look, especially Covenant. Shin Megami Tensei III and the Digital Devil Saga games would also be great.
Having purchased Red Faction on PSN recently, I was blown away when that first trophy popped. Ah, it gave me as much joy and satisfaction as the first time I realised you could destroy the environments when it first came out 16 years ago. Sony really needs to incorporate a more steady rate of games to its PS2 catalogue. Very good list by the way.
The severe lack of SMT on this list is disappointing. It would be thrilling to get proper PS4 ports of Nocturne, the Digital Devil Saga duology, and the Raidou Kuzunoha games. I suppose P3 FES/P4 wouldn't hurt, either.
@rjejr It's not that I don't agree, it's just that I can't be arsed to explain sometimes. The thing with PlayStation Now is that it's a giant server running PS3 hardware at the moment. Like literally, giant PS3s. They're adding PS4 support later this year.
So the easiest way to get PS2 games on PlayStation Now, rather than create a bunch of server racks with PS2 hardware, is literally to get the games on PS4 (with Trophies and all the other bells and whistles) and then stream them through PlayStation Now using the PS4 hardware they're already adding. Does that make sense?
As for the Trophies thing, they're not for everyone, but I personally find them an added incentive to go back to the old games. I have a similar reaction to what @LobsterJohnson said. It does create extra work, but for me (and presumably a lot of others), it adds a ton of value, too.
My top picks:
Maximo:Ghosts to Glory (THE ONE YOU MISSED
Viewtiful Joe
TimeSplitters 2
Shadow of the Colossus
I'm pretty sure all 4 of these would make my top 10 list of all time. I still replay them every year.
@get2sammyb What no Tekken?? I will admit Tekken 4 wasn't that great but 5 was a gem especially since it has Tekken 1- 3 on it as well.
@get2sammyb Alas I was an xbox 360 lackey and never had a PS3. Comparing exclusives, I somewhat feel I made the wrong choice now I have played some of the PS3 remasters. Damn peer pressure.
@Tasuki Good shout, I loved Tekken 5, too.
@ZurapiiYohane Was that the third-person shooter one?
I'll take dmc trilogy, god hand, god of war 1 & 2, ico & sotc, metal gear solid 2 & 3, okami, prince of persia, ratchet and clank trilogy, persona 4, silent hill 2, tomb raider, and viewtiful joe
@Ralizah I can't believe I forgot about Nocturne. It's been ages since I played it. Haven't played the other PS2 SMT games, though.
Are you mental no NFS Underground? Used to love them 2 games.
Why can't Sony just release the whole PS2 collection on PS4? There's so many games I'd buy ☹️
All I want is TimeSplitters 2 (well all 3 TS games) + I heard that TimeSplitters Rewind might not have split-screen mode to!?!? That is the worse News EVER :-/ Because I really couldn't give a funk about online multi-player :-/ Oh welll
onimusha collection
scarface
Simpsons hit and run !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shadow of Memories!
I just thought of Rayman 2 Revolution. I thought that was the best version of Rayman 2, and would be cool to have on PS4.
I would also add to the list Drakan, Shadow of Mordor, Spongebob BFBB, Spiderman 2, Speed Racer, Shadow Hearts, Fatal Frame, Thrillville Off the Rails(better than playing Rollercoaster Dreams), Shadow Tower Abyss, Hulk, Dragonball Tenkaichi, King Kong, Lego Racers 2, Godzilla SoT, Haunting Ground, Onimusha, Dynasty Warriors 3, Extermination, The Thing, Resident Evil Outbreak (WAY BETTER than Umbrella Corps), Sphinx, Castlevania LoI and CoD, Ghosthunter, Tourist trophy, Gitaroo Man, Zone of Enders, Haven, Gradius, SMT Nocturne and DDS, Tales of Abyss, Disgaea 1/2, King's Field 4, Armored Core nexus, Tenchu, Project Eden, Transformers, Genji, Nightshade, .Hack//(I prefer these over SAO), SOCOM, Sky Gunner, Berserk, Half Life, Deus Ex, Culdcept, Dog's Life, and Summoner.
Edit: Heck, there are still a few other ps2 games, even the obscure ones like Gungrave, Resident Evil Dead Aim, Oni, Blood Will Tell, Way of the Samurai, Klonoa 2, Everblue 2, Disaster Report, R.A.D, Crimson Sea 2, Bombastic, Space Channel, Magic Pengel, etc. And even licensed titles like Cars, Harry Potter, Kim Possible, James Bond, Batman Begins, etc. Man, the PS2 was a beast back then, even if it was a bit underpowered compared to the Xbox.
Megaman x collection and megamanx8 are the right answer
All these games would be good. I recently picked up Ape Escape 2 from PSN and I was really surprised how the graphics popped, as well as the trophies
Surprised the Onimusha games weren't on the list. Wish Sony were more productive in getting these PS2 games out.
I'd switch James Bond Everything or Nothing with James Bond Nightfire. I'm not usually keen on first person shooters, but I loved Nightfire and even managed to get all the medals in it. Plus it was the second PS2 game I've ever played. Everything or Nothing is still great, but Nightfire will always be a favourite for me.
This is a great list. Agree with all of them.... though I'm still hoping that with the success of persona 5, atlus port/remake persona 4 the golden for ps4
Liberty City Stories would be great to have in a PS4 hd version. I found LCS much more fun than Gta 3. Like better camera, motorcycles, and fun repeatable stuff.
Scarface and Half-Life would also be welcome additions to play on the PS4.
@get2sammyb "Does that make sense?"
Well no, not when you put it that way. But going forward, in a world where all TV's and mobile devices have hardware built in that can stream PS2 games, and I do think at some point they stop making $400 home consoles and everything just gets streamed like Netflix, another 3 or 4 gen maybe, that they might as well go ahead and build those PS2 server racks now. B/c what happens when PS5 and PS6 comes out? Do they have to go through and recode every PS2 game to work on the PS5 and then the PS6, or woudln't it be easier to just code them to stream now on any system Sony builds in the future?
Your way may work better for the PS4, but that only has 2 to 3 years left, my way works better for every system that comes out the next 30 years on PS Now. Then we have the zombie apocalypse and zombies don't play video games.
So yeah, I think its 'better to put in more work now that will last for the longer term than do less work now to get games running on a system that will be obsolete in 3 years. Once I saw PS Now on PC I realized streaming is the future.
@rjejr They switched to X86 architecture with the PS4 specifically to avoid this issue moving forwards. The avant-garde architecture of the PS2 and PS3 in particular will always be a thorn in Sony's side, unfortunately.
I agree with you on streaming.
@DerMeister Definitely check out DDS 1 & 2 if you get a chance. They combine the press turn battle system and bleak themes related to eastern spirituality and cannibalism with more standard JRPG elements.
@get2sammyb Snap, I rarely have time to replay games, but I must have played gun at least half a dozen times. Great list. Okami and viewtiful Joe must make a comeback. And I need more timesplitters in my life
@mookysam Honestly, if you can find a cheap 2DS on ebay or a gamestop, it's well worth playing the one that just released. They made so many little changes that really take the flow of exploration and combat to the next level.
There are a lot more games I'd add, especially JRPGs (like Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria), and some of the list is well within my reach a PSP and Vita owner. But this is an interesting list.
Actually played God Hand at a friend's place a few times. It often feels southparkishly provocative in its attitude but still charming - and rather challenging.
Would not mind them bringing Eternal Ring back.
I could add a lot more but i'll just leave that one there, way too lazy to add a huge list right now.
Edit: 5/22/17
Alright, since the announcement of Eternal Ring coming, I'll add my list now.
(Ignore confirmed, or already released PS2 games for PS4)

[There is more that I would like added but these are the one's I could think of, I'm sure I am missing some good one's though, if people want they can add to this list.]
I would love The Simpsons Hit and Run but wouldn't there be licensing issues in the way? Also Xenosaga trilogy since there wasn't enough signatures for the petition for an HD collection. Also Virtua Fighter 4 and Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution
@Sonicfan11589 Yes. Unfortunately, several of these would have licensing issues, which is a big fat bummer.
Y'all posted alot of games that already have ports to the PS3. I'd love a list of games that never got the trophy treatment
Man, I wish Gran Turismo 3 or 4 got the PS2 to PS4 treatment, however song and car licensing issues make it almost impossible for it happen.
@LobsterJohnson Bought that in the recent PS4 Humble Bundle pack, wasn't particularly impressed myself.
In all honesty, only about 5/6 of these I'd be interested in playing or paying for again. Okami & Killer 7 for definite. There's too many great games out now or on the horizon to go back to inferior titles, both technically and in gameplay terms.
Hmmm, viewtiful joe not bad~
How is Persona 4 on this list but not Persona 3? I mean don't get me wrong, I'd like to see both, but unlike P3 the best version of P4 isn't even the one on PS2. If they could port Golden to PS4 I'd be down for that. Hell, given P5's success it might even be something they're already considering.
I'd love to give Metal Gear Solid 2 another shot. It was a pack in with my PS2 but I never got far with it at the time.
Seems like I'm alone in this one, but I would love to see .hack and .hack//G.U. compilations come to the PSN. I put way to many hours into those games and would love to relieve them. Even with upgraded graphics, the first series would be ugly as hell, but I really miss the pseudo MMO gameplay and most of the characters.
I keep tweeting Bamco, but no one listens. I know .hack is dead, but it doesn't make me want it any less.
@Melucine oh I loved balders gate, and as a huge EQ player back in the day champs of norath was great. I had completely forgotten them games! Thanks for the reminder.
@rjejr @get2sammyb
I take great value in added trophy support on PS2 games for PS4, especially plats. Main reason why I did buy Bully, and all GTA games. And why I didn't buy RDRev & Warriors.
Anyway, good shout to Burnout. Also saw 2 people mention Need for Speed Underground and Gran Turismo 3, hell yes.
These aside, the ones I'd like to see are Def Jam Fight for New York (Takeover was ok-ish) & Shadow of Rome (with plats please).
Such a shame I rarely see these 2 mentioned in these kind of lists 😟
I feel they should leave them as is.
Unless they do a Ratchet & Clank and remake them properly for 2017.. leave them as they were. Its unfortunate they were released on hardware which requires work to make available on PS4 but it just seems like too much resources are wasted on remastering old titles when we should be looking forward to new experiences.
from that list, i'd pick Motorstorm Arctic Edge. never owned a PS2 or psp, and with Pacific Rift and Apocalypse, Motorstorms are the only racing games i get any enjoyment out of.
The Suikoden games belong in this list!
Uhhhhh Monster Hunter 2?
I gotta say a 1/4 of these are available thru rentals or subscription on PS Now......
I'd love a remaster(actually a remake would be better maybe)of the Legacy of Kain series. From Soul Reaver to Defiance. ..i could do without Blood Omen 2. None of this will ever happen though. Haha
@GoodFellaLarry Yes pls.
@NoCode23 I loved Vice City i just love the 80's.
Maybe Champions of Norrath.
@themcnoisy super monkey ball deluxe would be a decent game if it weren't for the deadzones on the PS2 analog stick. They were made with Gamecube analog stick.
@waluigifan1 Super Monkey Ball on G was outstanding!
Nice list though would swap Burnout 3 for Burnout 2 which is factually and non-subjectively better! lol
My list: Grandia 2-xtreme
Wild Arms 3-4
Maximo: ghosts To Glory
Vexx
Evil Dead Fistful Of Broomstick/Regeneration
Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance
spy-ro the Dragon 4-5
Viewtiful Joe
Rygar
Super Monkey Ball Deluxe and Super Monkey Ball Adventure
Ico
Fatal Frame trilogy
Devil May Cry trilogy
Ratchet And Clank (all of them, including Secret Agent Clank)
The X-Files resist Or Serve (sorry, big X-Files fan)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trilogy
the Buzz titles including the Jr's
Whiplash
Hot Shots Golf 3 and Fore
Shadow hearts 1 and 2
ATV Offroad Fury trilogy
Adventures Of Cookie And Cream
Tokobot Plus
Silent Hill 2-4
Thrillville 1-2
Theme Park Rollercoaster
24 The Game (kiefer Sutherland fan here)
many of the platform adventure titles, due to being some of my favorite genres
The Bible Game (really fun party game)
There's many others I can think of, some of which I own on PS2 as they are...there's also thought that I'd like to see PS3 titles released on the store too to buy and download (Dante's Inferno for one), especially since they're becoming hard to find and my PS3 is starting to slowly go down hill. Would also like to see them add PS1 titles too.
Only see 4 I would lay down cash for but this might be a great idea for Plus titles
I'd love to see Dragon Quest 8 on the PSN store, unlikely to happen though, sadly.
I have a ps2 so ports might move me from the switch to ps4.
And where can I find okami and okamiden at I am trying to find them.
@NomNom But you can get the 3ds versions.
@themcnoisy I love those games so much, too bad the series seems to be dead.
Mashed (fully loaded). Really wish they would remake it for PS4! Wrecked on PS3 was good too, but not as good. I still get the PS2 out (with multi-tap) and play it now but my controllers are starting to die. Hoping the new Micro Machines will have some of Mashed's features.
my favorite ps2 games i ever played that i don't hear anymore
aggressive inline
fire blade
mister mosquito
tony hawk's pro skater
X games
street fighter EX3
army men R.T.S.
SSX tricky and SSX 3
Klonoa2
Celebrity Deathmatch ( who even remembers this?)
dragon ballz budokai tenkainchi 2 and 3 ( this game will make u for get u even had a family lol)
ps2 is the kingdom of games. in just 2hours you can list 100 games without looking at the internet.
all i did was list a few in 5 mins. please like and comment :3
@JLPick Devil May Cry trilogy is already out. been out for a few years now
@kimpod1 I know, but my PS3 took a plunge, and I don't feel like re-buying the console and going through the whole download everything days again...plus, I'd also have to re-buy a new Hard Drive for it too. Loved my PS3 to death I guess is what I should have said...got too much usage. But, would love to see them get re-released for the PS4, as it seems almost everything else is!!!
@kimpod1 I own Celebrity Deathmatch. Another good one was the Ready To Rumble Boxing ones and Clay Fighters. There's a lot of games I'd like to see come back (boogeyman, Earthworm Jim, Aero The Acrobat, James Pond, Goemon, Chuck Rock, Cool Spot, Goonies 2, Bayou Billy, Rocket, Gex, Chameleon Twist and more). PS1, PS2, Gamecube, Genesis, Dreamcast, Super NES, NES and even Gameboy had many great titles that seemed to have been forgotten about, and this is something that all of those companies should try to bring back to the newer games on the scene, granted that some of those companies that made those games have gone out of business, but still, those companies could help and gain a little profit from them.
@themcnoisy Super Monkey Ball was just great fun no matter what. It's actually been since VITA that a new one was made (I believe Vita's came out after the 3DS). Hopefully sega renews them, but not just keep them to just one console. A New Monkey Ball with plenty of mini games on all of the systems...including PC and MAC would be nice.
@JLPick i thought rumble boxing was a dreamcast game and a nintendo game... hmm... earthworm jim is on ps4 i think. i saw it last year but cant find it anymore.... but this is my thoughts... sony is making me feel a bit dissapointed. because it take almost 6 or more months for a good game to come out. (offcorce im exaggerating i bit) but the point is most of sony games now suck. the ones that are good get boring after a few months or 2 years of playing... like black ops for most people. when sony had the ps2 it felt like a new game pops up every week... ps3 had a lot of expectations but then to find out that the ps3 was just a test for the ps4... and look now ps4 has 3 or more different systems. the reasons for the other ps4 systems is almost the same as nintendo's NDS or N3DS to NDSXL and N3DSXL... to me its a big waste of money. like most fans would say " the glory days please, bring them back. If the game can be updated even better." meaning if a game called rock 1 and rock 2 came out for the old system make rock 3 for the new systems. only changes needed is the graphics and a added story. If the controls change and the characters change the fun is mostly killed lol.... my thoughts
@kimpod1 I think the days of games coming out from the companies every week has ended, but I see you're point. Since the Atari, games were pouring out right and left, all the way up to the PS2, Gamecube and XBOX era, where after that, they stopped. I believe that most of that was due to the stores on the systems, where many games get added every week, and if there was no online stores on the systems, we'd see the same trend as the past happening...many games coming out each week. Now, of course even with the technology and the games having bigger budgets and more time and money spent into them, we probably won't see the great numbers. Nintendo is great, but even if we look at the Wii U (and take away the short-played games that nintendo even made...Captain Toad, Kirby Rainbow Curse, and Star Fox...which star fox seemed rush and just a re-release of the N64 classic), we're even left there with just a small amount. Sony, with the PS4, seemed to have more focus on making 3rd party companies happy in the first few years, with sony only releasing a handful of their own games, and many being re-releases from the PS3 era, or VITA and PSP titles, but I'm seeing more coming out or announced for the rest of this year and the coming year (New Hot Shots Golf, Last Of Us 2, Ni No Kuni 2, the next Uncharted and I'm sure there will be more announced). E3 is coming, and if rumors are true that Sony has the biggest space reserved, and nintendo is second in line with space, maybe we'll see plenty! I still though, kind of enjoy the PS4 for all of the games coming out...for some reason (and I grew up with an Atari...yup, old), it feels like the heydays of the NES, where many games are coming out in the retail scene and the genres are my favorites...platform, adventure, strategy, simulation (granted there I'd love to see a Sims title) and many puzzle titles. The only genre I'd like to see more of is Party...I'd love for Sing Star to get a physical release with microphones (not the stupid use your phone or tablet to play) and I'd love for more trivia games (Trivial Pursuit or the National Geographic titles) and would also love for a new BUZZ title with the buzzers added. But, just like you said, without the games pouring out onto the systems, this is why I'm not excited for the Switch...I'd love to have nintendo's next console, but I still see no reason or want for it when the same games are already on a system I own, and Zelda doesn't look that great to me and the only other game I saw for it, doesn't even come out until the end of the year (and nintendo will probably push it into 2018) and I saw nothing else for it. Same goes for the XBONE, which I saw a couple of their exclusives, but still...nothing else to make it worth a purchase. Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft need to know that the consumers go for the console for their exclusives, but they also need to know that they need to have various genres. Nintendo is great for the platform titles and party games, but they lack in sports (realistic sim sports) and action, adventure, horror and racing sims (racing games that aren't just Mario Kart and kart racing). Sony (in my opinion) doesn't have a ton of platform games anymore and very little party and seems to focus on more M-rated titles, not really making it kid-friendly. The kid-friendly titles need to be out on all three machines, giving parents the options too to see that the machines are good for everyone, and not just one group of individuals. I'm a parent, my kids play the PS4, but I don't like not having much that they can play except for the same old Skylanders, Infinity, Just Dance and a few others...and again, I hated the Wii U, they have no interest in the Wii so I sold it and have no regrets, sold the 360 for various reasons, have enough games on PS3, but the system is starting to slowly fade into slowness and problems galore (constant freezing for no reason). Anyways, yeah, sorry this comment is long and I guess I went off track, but I hear you in every way!!!!
@kimpod1 Rumble Boxing was first on Dreamcast, later came to the N64 and part 1 then later on PS1. Part 2 did make it to PS2, but was forgotten. Still though, they weren't the best, but enjoyable. Clay Fighters was always one of my favorites.
i'd much rather they remaster KZ2/3 for PS4 than bring a PS2 version of KZ, especially when it already had a PS3 remaster with many improvements, including modern controls. FPS multiplayers have been rather mediocre this gen, and assuming there's not going to be a battlefield bad company 3 or a KZ reboot anytime soon, remastering KZ2/3 would bring two of the best mps from the PS3 era into the modern day and make future backwards compatibility somewhat more likely.
@JLPick i get u too man. i grew up with the old systems so i know what your saying. plus my ps3 is the same too. gettin old i cant even go on PSN store on it anymore for some reason -_- ... you made me laugh when u said you sold your wii U lol i new the wii U was like a waste so i never bother to look twice at it. to me it feels like all fans for nintendo and sony say so much. good things.. but never heard... we can see the way they try to sell there product is mostly for there own benefits not much ours. thats why some of there systems and games that they think the fans will love come out making less money than they expect. like the ps2 on ps4 games. so much ps2 games that sell high in the market right now are not even in the list for the ps4. that could have or should have been the first move. i see a few ps2 games rite now cost the saME FOR A NEW PS4 GAME... THAT IS CRAZY. LOL oh yea the from what i heard nintendo is a family friendly system and sony is mostly for mature audience. but even so if you look at the store you mostly see more teen and e for everyone games in there. mature games is a big deal thats why you see more of that on tv than the others.... its just a bit upsetting. its like they have all that power and its like they lost the team that made the ps2 great or something lol like Disney. once was the greatest in the world and now. think about this as a little joke.. sony is disney and nintendo is Nickelodeon, Xbox is ABC kids or W.B. 11 or cartoon network lol
@kimpod1 I think of sony like Universal and nintendo like disney. Only for this reason...nintendo has a hit every now and then that does surprisingly very well, but their old IP's always sell...just like disney movies (sorry to say, I've not like anything that disney has put out since the late 90's...especially after living in florida (worked at Universal though) and found out that there's too much G*Y pride there)...but Universal has various genres (dreamwork animation and then the hardcore genres)...like Sony, which also does all various genres.
I also see what you say, about people saying that Sony doesn't have kid-friendly games...which they do, greatly. Parappa, the Move titles on PS3, Buzz Jr and many that were from PS1 on up, and yup, many games on the PS4 store that are more E-rated than others. Even 360 was like that, it's just harder to see other companies besides the main companies make any children's games anymore. Nintendo's are more cartoony and colorful, which is where they get the whole kid-friendly games, and I love playing them...there's always some kind of love to nintendo...but they need others in their categories too.
Also, got rid of the Wii U for many of the retail games. The downloads on the E-Shop (many of them, but not all) were cheap cheesy play for a minute and get bored games...as for the retail scene, besides Super Mario 3D World, DK Country, Zelda's, Xenoblade and Mario Kart, the rest seemed rushed out titles to fill gaps for the ones who bought the system...Kirby, Captain Toad, Mario Tennis, Smash (which was missing the story mode), Star Fox and Animal Crossing all seemed rushed and were missing the love that nintendo usually puts into their games. Truly, the only game I really liked and enjoyed on it was Mario 3D World and I still didn't think it was the best Mario title. I sold the Wii U just in it's second year, and I had no regrets...plus, it gave me a bunch of PS4 goodies at the time. The system had potential, but it seemed like it was just a learning toy for what they were marketing for the Switch. I'm still not even sold on the Switch after the Wii U fiscal.
@JLPick lol... i looked at the N. switch and it does not interest me at all. it looks kinda cool but... it feels like the wii control but on a some what upgrade., 2 people on 1 controler plus the controler can transform lol... i dont know. from the creations like games and systems they make (Sony, nintendo, etc) makes me wonder where do they get those crappy ideas from.... oh my god i wish dreamcast was still around. lol if it never got bankrupt it would have been even bigger than sony. it was like a ps2 + wii before ps2 came out. oh my god. loved it
@kimpod1 Dreamcast was an incredible console, and I really wish that more people paid attention to it. I still have a good library of games for it, even though the VM Memory Cards don't display anything on the 'go' anymore. A good console that I think was just way ahead of its time, but definitely had many great ideas to it! And, just like you, I think if Sega didn't mess up so many things so many times, they'd still be around competing with Sony and Nintendo, but I don't think Microsoft would be around anymore, unless they'd help sega.
@JLPick i think Microsoft would still be around no matter what. because i remember the talks. pc gamers wanted a system other than a pc. something easy to get and enough money to buy. they wanted there favorite pc games in the livingroom without haveing to install controllers and seein if your pc is even compatible and all that extra stuf... thus the Xbox was born lol ( put the powerpuff girl theme song in there).
How bout All the classic compilation discs!!
Atari Anthology
Midway Treasures1,2,3
Namco Museum 50th
Taito legends 1&2
Activision Anthology
Metal Slug Anthology
Snk Neo Geo classic collection
Sega Genesis collection
Sonic hedgehog collection
Sega Ages/classic collection
I Would snap all these up on PS4!!!!
There needs to be a new Outrun game with todays shiny graphics but keeping to its simple arcade formula of checkpoint driving through gorgeous scenic locations.
How about PS2's FXII - it looked so good, all you need is the PS2 to PS4 emulator's upscaler and ita an instant buy at $15.. oh right.. Squenix pretty much upscaled it and now sells it for $50. It would have been much better as a "PS2 Classic"
Yes PS2 it was the machine I loved like no other. I don't want to support anything related to the Simpsons, but I agree with most of the list. I wish Sony would get off their duff and tart up some classics.
I don't like ps2 classic, if there's game I want, I want it remastered in 4k like wipeout ps4, rarappa and patapon. I bought and finish ape escape 2 ps2 classic but while playing that I always think it's a missed opportunity the game is not remastered in 4k for ps4 pro.
Also I want okami remaster, just add true widescreen and 4k for pro, I'll buy it day 1
So, uh, any reason this months old article has been revived?
Still a travesty that Simpsons and Nightmare Before Christmas games were included, but SMT: Nocturne and Fatal Frame II weren't, BTW!
@Party_Cannon There's a lot more to Zodiac Age than just an upscale.
Some great choices there. Please somebody get Sega to make Outrun 2006 and Monkey Ball to happen on modern tech.
However, sorry, wrong Burnout IMHO. Both 2 and Legends were superior.
@SoulsBourne128 We're getting .Hack//GU Last Recode later this year. It's a PS4 remaster with tweaked gameplay and additional content.
I rather see the games remastered a lot of games aged terrible but that a personal thing.
Id rather get okami hd, than the original
Also no breath of fire 3 and up?
@Radbot42 Breath of Fire 4 was epic for me personally. 😀
TimeSplitters 2!!! + BurnOut 3 + LOADS more but I can never see TimeSplitters 2 coming to the PS4
Great list. Though I would love to see these PS2 games come to the PS4 as well:
SSX Tricky
Castlevania
shadow of Rome (Ryse done right)
Berserk
Namco x Capcom
Shadow Tower Abbyss
King Kong
Hulk
Spiderman 1-2/Ultimate
Scarface
Godzilla Saves the Earth
Chaos Wars (Everyone needs to appreciate the "spectacular" voice acting)
Simpsons Hit n Run
Spongebob The movie/Battle for Bikini Bottom
The Thing
Suffering
Total overdose
Silpheed
Panzer dragoon
Drakan
Haunting ground
obscure
Extermination
Graffiti kingdom
Magic pengel
Rune
Katamari
A dog's life
Viewtiful Joe
SOCOM
Ty the tasmanian tiger
Nightshade
Genji
Shinobi
Armored core 2-3
Mortal Kombat Shaolin monks
Megaman X8
Cold winter
Transformers (one of the best Transformers game of the PS2 era)
Shadow Hearts
MDK2
Red Faction
Maximo
Time crisis
RAD
Space Channel
Giants (incredibly underrated)
Ecco
Adventures of cookie and cream
Tenchu
Bombastic
Zoocube
Herdy gerdy
Project eden
Mercure meltdown
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Katamari Damarcy! Please!
Hardly a list of classics.
About 5 decent games in here.
Yeah wish the owners of these games would just allow Sony to relaunch them.. And simply get paid a commission for each game sold. That's what happens in the music and film industry. Elvis still gets played on Radio 2. Rocky was re-released from cinema to VHS to dvd to bluray and now streams on iTunes play Netflix etc, and whatever 4k or 8k media is in future. Front Misson series on ps2 is my big pick as I'm a sucker for srpgs ☺ just send out a message to game industry... If you would like to make money again from your old games (ps1, ps2, PS3) just say yes! . And supply them a Google/Sony analytics type dashboard where they can see how views per game and how many sold, etc! Simples! Download Ps1 or ps2 emulator app on ps4, download a gane and enjoy ☺
Nice article and fully agree with it but no fighting games? For me the ps2 was the best console for fighting games and want to see sony bring more back like,
Capcom vs snk 2- the ps3 emulation was a dissapontment with it's random frame drops so a ps4 emulation will have to run flawless or just port it with online, never going to happen but one can dream.
And the rest of the snk back catalogue the KOF 2000 that is out now is a flawless emulation with full legacy support and should be used as a template for any ps2 fighter that comes out
@Flaming_Kaiser
I've only played the first two and would love to finish the series
How in the hell did you keave off the .hack// series?
.hack//Infection
.hack//Mutation
.hack//Infection
.hack//Quarentine
Were great games!
Xenosaga Trilogy.....
SSX 3 isn't on this list.
I remember playing that 007 game and absolutely loving it.
MAAAAAAAN PLZ REMAKE SONIC RIDERS, SONIC RIDERS :ZERO GRAVITY and a better sequel to the ZG please
Updated.
We are getting Okami HD and you want Okami to be part of the PS2 classics?
I'm throwing these out there......
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds
Need for Speed: Underground 1 + 2
Need for Speed: Most Wanted (Original)
TimeSplitters: Future Perfect
Predator: Concrete Jungle
I really think games that have been already re done for ps3 really don't need doing again, SSX Tricky and Time splitters 2 would be awesome but the PS2 had such a great library I think Sony should also look games that were great but rare too.
Xenosaga Episode II
One of the best Sci-fi Rpg i played
So Xenosaga triology for Ps2 would make me happy
Damn I wish Sony would start selling me games I've already bought again. I want to give you my money Sony. HELP ME GIVE YOU MY MONEY.
good list BUT i would say Dragon Ball Z Infinite World instead of Budokai 3
it's Capsule system was better, it's story mode was just as expansive, it also had actual cut scenes and it had virtually the same roster B3 had it even added a few more too AND it fixed the Dragon Rush system
it was an all round better version of B3 but as it came out about the same time as Burst Limit on PS3 it never gets the recognition it deserves
I've never played a Syphon Filter game so yes I want that!
Also NFL Street.
I'm still waiting for the rest of the Jak games to appear. I thought they were all going to show up this year, or was I wrong about that?
Also, if Tekken Tag 1 is going to be on here, I want Tekken 5, dangit. One of the best, and my personal favorite in the series.
Siren 2 being re-released would be great, since it never got a North American release.
Also I think you guys can cross out Yakuza 1 & 2, since Yakuza Kiwami has already been released and Yakuza Kiwami 2 is on the way.
TENCHU! How could you have missed that?!
I expected to see a lot more exclusives honestly! A couple of these games already have remasters on newer systems. As a late adopter of the Playstation 2 (and Playstation in general), my favorite aspect of the PS2 is all the amazing RPGs it has (especially all the ATLUS ones) and the Katamari Damacy series. whisper sakura...wars...
backwards compatibilty. I own a ton of ps2 games and shouldn't have to pay twice for a game.
to be clear i don't need a remaster.
I'd add Gradius V, Rtype Final, and Contra shattered soldier. Shadow of the collosus would be kind of redundant since it got a PS3 re-release and the new one looks so much better. Ps2 had so many great games.
2 games that have, surprisingly, not been mentioned... Zone of the Enders 1 & 2.
The omission of Tenchu 3 is unforgivable.
@wittypixel to be fair they probably could easily add Backwards Compatibility for PS1 and PS2 games via emulation
PS3 though i seriously doubt because of the Cell Processor but PS1 and PS2 would be nice
Greetings to all in this quite interesting community!
I found this by accident 2 years ago and up until that moment I was just reading the articles, however with this one it struck a chord in my old gaming heart, therefore I decided to place my first ever post.
My PS2 is still working (bought the last "fat" model back in 2003) and when a brand new PS4 arrived in my home I gave the old one as a gift to one of my best friend's two boys, alongside all my games.
I personally would like some games from PS2 line up to get a proper remaster - Burnout 3:Takedown, Burnout:Revenge, Soul Calibur 2, Dark Cloud & Dark Chronicle (I know these two are in the PS2 digital download section, but a remaster is more appropriate for me.
I know that this process is connected with lots of issues (legal and time constrains), but it won't do any harm if I dream a bit and keep my hopes for this to happen some day in the future. Cheers!
so what you're saying is that the ps2 had a bunch of garbage games?
@vitalemrecords: there must be some misunderstanding, I wasn't saying that PS2 had a bunch of garbage games, I prefer a remaster with improvements in graphics only (because some games would look pretty outdated in that particular department), not in gameplay or whatever. I apologize for any mistakes I've made in my sentence, since English is not my native language, however I don't think that in my post there were inclinations that outlined your interpretation.
@Jui_Kuen I was commenting on the article - not your comment
this article reminds me that there weren't many good games on the ps2.
@playstation1995 Good call for Cold Fear, loved that game. And I’d put Silent Hill 3 and 4 to this list.
Own some titles from this list.
Bought my 102nd and 103rd physical ps2 games today.
Disgaea 2 and dragon lair 3D.
While I do agree that Persona 3 should be remade for the PS4, it's sad that SMT Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga didn't make the list. Shadow Hearts, Xenosaga, Sakura Wars anyone?
Great list also you missed Viewtiful Joe 1 & 2 they where great games and have never been remastered since ps2.
you forgot Timesplitters 2
I wish they would bring back back digimon rumble arena 1 and 2 they were the best games I have ever played
Playstation showing xbox how exclusives are done and xbox showing playstation how backwards compatibility is done.
Darkwatch, Genji, Castlevania - Lament of Innocence and Maximo 1-2 would be great.
Still bugs me that my PS1 classics I bought from the PS Store on my PS3 don't work. I happily buy the HD remasters with trophies etc but would've expected the original versions bought digitally would work across generations. Rather than be locked to PS3.
I bought the Crash Bandicoot trilogy last year, but I'd still love to fire up the original game on my PS4 with the dated graphics from time to time without having to play on my aging PS3.
@kimpod1 Actually it came out in March this year, two months ago, but like you said it's already out. You were probably thinking of the PS3 version that came out in 2012.
Sony don't care for PS2 classics on the PS4 like they did with the PS3 before barley any games from that system made it on to last gen and won't this gen. Xbox leads the way for backwards compatibility but that's the only thing its got good going for it because new games don't seem to exsist
It looks like that will not have any PS2 games on PS4, sadly. I was really excited about this feature, so many great games could come back.
Sigh, I'm still waiting for Ape Escape 3, I was really sure that it would be released after Ape Escape 2 and those leaks years ago.
Sorry, this layout still does my head in. Heading and description should be ABOVE the images, not below. The flow is completely unnatural.
God of war 2
Soul Calibur 3
But PS2 graphics on modern tv looks worse than it looked on old tv of the PS2 era so maybe Sony don't release PS2 games because of that, they fear they could disapppoint some people.
That's too bad, and at least God of war 2 would deserve a remaster if they really don't dare to publish it in the same old version
I buy some old games on PS4 but my question is with the number of games new games on PS4 how do you find time to play old titles?? I really wanted Destroy All Humans my wish came true. I bought both 1 and 2 after about 2-3 hours I moved back to PS4 games. I own about 10 PS4 games I haven even opened yet along with digital sale item I bought and many PS Plus games I want to play but have not finished other PS4 games. I play an avg of 4 to 6 hours a day on my PS4 now.
Scarface
Capcom Vs SNK 2
Dead To Rights 1&2
A general wishlist:
Dragon ball z budokai tenkaichi 3 (the roster is huge!)
Star wars battlefront 1
Tony hawk underground 1 &2
Ty trilogy
Spiderman 2
Ultimate spiderman
Spiderman shattered dimensions
Need for speed underground
And Lego star wars 1&2 (or just a port of the complete collection)
Can we talk about how this is one thing xbox absolutely crushes? Sure its because they cancel every xbox one title half way through development but I popped in my ancient copy of morrowwind and poof game on.
The PS4 has a functional PS2 and PSP emulator and neither gets used for much of anything.
Does anybody still remember "Psi-Ops: the mindgate conspiracy"? That game was so ahead of its time and completely underrated.
Onimusha trilogy would be amazing, though I'd much prefer a remaster like the DMC trilogy.
Suikoden III, IV, V, and Tactics
Radiata Stories
Shadow Hearts
MGS 2&3
Great list the ps2 had so many good games my only problem with this is although I have a PS4 I still have my ps2 and most of these games can be picked up for a couple of quid with the exception of god hand and killer 7
Tekken 5 is one I'd love to see.
Lma manager is a must
I'd love to see Heavenly Sword and Wet be remastered for the PS4. Two highly underrated games well ahead of their time.
Frequency
Some of the games listed above I can’t wait for but there is 2 games I definitely can’t wait for but they aren’t on the list and I really wish they were and they are Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1&2 please please put these on PS4 and I’ll buy them right away and I’m pretty sure lots or others will buy them too
I dont get why so many ppl want TimeSplitters 2. If u ask me, TimeSplitters 3 was way better in every way (besides the remote Mines) Man and that story, how i miss it
The lack of open world is exactly why Burnout 3 (and 4 and SSX Tricky) will always > any other installment in those series.
The immediacy and getting-to-know-the-course factor were half the fun. Riding around and looking for things to do completely ruined it for me.
Also, I miss crash mode.
I really hope these titles make the jump to ps4
I really just want Steambot Chronickes with HD upressing. I think that game would be awesome to play without paying $50 and digging up a freaking PS3 and maybe a tube TV.
Sniper Elite 1 / Fatal Frame 1 ,2 & 3 / Viewtiful Joe 2.
Capcom vs. SNK: Millennium Fight 2000 - PS1
@Starvex The meat of TimeSplitters 2 was in the arcade mode, it had a series of rapid fire challenges that aren’t quite like anything before or since . TimeSplitters 3 was mainly focused on that story. But the are many more recent first person shooters with a story.
Whoever made the list obviously never owned a PS2 since Tenchu 3 is missing...
How about adding more than 20 games to it? I mean adding all the titles on this list would sell it out within days.
They could add nearly all there own games from PS2 if they wanted to just pay for the licenses and they'll make the money back off sales to pay them
It makes me mad how they've all but pulled support for this. From my understanding they were selling well. I dont get why they stopped. Can anyone put some light on this?
@CB7Tuner91 i think it's just because they can use the production budget for more important things like the ps5 and new games etc.
production can't run forever,no matter how well it might still be selling.
Xbox One does it better.
@IBeAGamer Microsoft definitely tried harder. But Xbox One backwards compatibility is still far from comprehensive.
It would be nice to replay a few titles but the visuals are so outdated I would probably just buy a new ps4 game.
fatal frame trilogy
kuon
haunting ground
rule of rose
clock tower 3
I loved Gun so much! I remember in 2005 I wanted to play it so badly. I asked for it for Christmas that year, but I couldn't wait, I had a feeling that my mum had already bought it; so I spent the week before Christmas searching the house. I eventually found it, played it, and finished the story before I was even given the game; I made sure to leave it back in its hiding place of course. It's now a lovely, sneaky Christmas memory.
@Ryall you download the game or buy the games disc, not hard to grasp.
@IBeAGamer If the game isn’t available for download buying the game disc won’t do you a lot of good😂
@Ryall ok and Microsoft has an updated list posted.
Silent Hill 3! Oh and also Fatal Frame please 😪
I want Castlevania Lament of Innocence
Great list ! i just really want Ape Escape 3, loved that game so much.
@RedMageLanakyn https://limitedrungames.com/products/pound-technology-ps2-ps1-hdmi-cable
@Lekzie1 Great taste. 😁
i think some of this games brought back to PS4 ?
Mercenaries
The Punisher
Lord of the Rings The Third Age
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Ultimate Spider-Man
To name a couple that are missing.
ICO, Fatal Frame, Haunting Ground, Kuon, Clocktower, Siren, Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil SaGa, SMT Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga didn't make the list. Shadow Hearts, Xenosaga how much can we have.
Games should be left on the system they release on. If PS5 has BC great, but if it doesn't warrant a remaster (ie: $$) people shouldn't expect all games to work on successive systems and should just move on. Devs will have no passion to innovate if all anyone plays is something made 10+ years earlier
Man so many great games on ps2, I think it will be really cool if ps5 can emulate ps2 games with improved resolutions and framerate like ps2 emulation on pc emulator program.
@Cycologist Completly disagree, it like saying star war classic movie doesn’t have to be remastered on bluray, just let it stay on vhs/cd-rom. Besides, nearly all AAA devs innovations now is how to extort gamer with dlc/mtx/lootbox, there’s no passion to make art anymore.
Isn’t GTA Liberty City / Vice City already on PS4?
Budokai 3 was, and probably still is, my favourite dragonball game to date. I dig the style of fighterz, but I feel the system was way more nuanced before with the variety of techniques you could equip to each character.
God hand is and remains the one game I'd really love to see be remade. I don't know how, but if they could bring it to a modern platform, with smoother controls, hd graphics and even more moves, I bet it'd win some awards. Totally original, and though a little flawed, still kinda flawless!
@Melucine ab-so-lutely!
tales of symphonia on ps2 never got an english release so no idea why it is on this list. did the editors even play it on ps2? probably mixed it up with the gamecube version.
@Flaming_Kaiser you like DARK games man
@Rudy_Manchego Not only SH2 but 3 and 4 as well, plus I’d love a remake of the original SH from PS1, in the same vein that Capcom did with RE2.
Blood Omen 1and 2 and the Legacy of Kane Soul Reaver games all need to be rereleased. God I miss those games.
Oogie’s Revenge is awesome and I would love to see it again, Capcom? Disney? Please?
Also SH2 and 3 would be hard cause Konami doesn’t actually have the original source code for those games, which is why we got that bad HD collection back on PS3, SH4 would be nice though, considering the fact that it’s not considered the black sheep of the franchise anymore.
Oh and Haunting Ground and Rule of Rose so you don’t have to pay 200+ to play either of them.

I want the OG Monster Hunter with dedicated servers for online play. No additions, no G-version content. Just the Original crew of monsters and the Headlock Meta.
@Porco Never looked at it like that. But there are so many great PS2 games. Ever played Dark Cloud 1 and Dark Chronicles or Kya Dark Lineage? Fun games the name sounds more sinister then they are. But i did like Burnout, SSX, Final Fantasy, Drakengard.
I always played a lot of adult games on PS. Parasite Eve 2, Resident Evil, Dino Crisis, Twisted Metal World Tour, Koudelka, Syphon Filter, Metal Gear Solid.
Legend of Legaia and Legend of Dragoon, Breath of Fire the lighter games that are great fun.
Now i love colorfull games too. Its a waste too ignore the many different games.
Second sight
devil summoner 1&2
digital devil saga 1&2
nocturne
obscure 1&2
timesplitter future perfect
007 nightfire
sakura wars so long my love
michigan report from hell
killer 7
galarians 2
Suikoden 3,4,5
wild arms 3,4,5
psy-ops
shadow heart 2,3
shadows of destiny
army men sarges heroes
bloody roar 4
heck there's even a version of deus ex on the ps2.
The ps2 was insanely good as far as libraries go.
EDIT: Haunting ground!
Britney’s Dance Beat! 😆
This list again? I thought you would have updated it... Tenchu 3 is still missing.
Finding a solution to PS3 Games to be playable is much worthy than PS2 titles. the reason i said that whatever they did to resolution for ps2 titles won't be appealing that much in the era we live in now.
Burnout 2. Burnout 3 was awful. We lost the amazing in house made soundtrack that dynamically changes when you burnout and instead got a garbage terrible early noughties crap bands. Also, how you unlocked new cars in the game was awful. 4 versions of the exact same car every time. The next best game after Burnout 2 was Revenge because the soundtrack was a little more tolerable and every single car you won was slightly faster then the last. Burnout 3's Crash mode was atrocious too, too many of them and just the same junctions used multiple times but slightly altered.
With that out of the way, this whole PS2 HD to PS4 thing was a failure. SO many games here that you listed and WHY did the not bring them to it, which again, we Burnout 3 couldn't because of the awful licensed soundtrack and a lot of other games on your list are probably held back by this too.
I like that you said Silent Hill Shattered Memories though. Also SH Origins. In fact, just about ANY PS2 game that came out after or around the PS3 launched because a lot of people moved on and never bothered with them............ even though PS3, at the time, could play a lot of them.
Games like Motorstorm Arctic Edge, Ratchet and Clank Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank, Jak and Daxter The Lost Frontier, GTA LC and VC Stories. And if Rockstar didn't bother with those last 2 when they bothered to bring over most of everything else, then we know we are never getting any more of these PS2 games. It seems 2K/Rockstar are the only ones that want our money when it comes to this.
A loooooot of crappy games in there.
Oni should be remade
It's a bit of a kick in the teeth that Killer 7 was recently remastered for PC, but for some reason has failed to be released on PS4. Easy choices would be Fatal Frame and Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly, but I'd also like to see Haunting Ground and another game I consider to be an under-rated classic: R.A.D. - Robot Alchemic Drive.
We need some of the old, top down, couch co-op (yes, Torchlight 2, I'm scowling at you) dungeon crawlers back.
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 and 2, Champions of Norrath 1 & 2, Gauntlet: Dark Legacy.
You look at the YouTube clips of Baldur's Gate: DA rand it still oozes class. It looked great upscaled/smoothed on my old PS3 60Gb (before it melted). Just imagine what it'd look like in upscaled 1080p?
I know that we all have opinions on what exactly are "classic" games on the PS2, but a lot of these selections are purely subjective, and not based on popularity of what could objectively be called "classics".
I'm not saying that all the games listed there are under that bracket, but theres definitely a few games that I had never even seen, or heard of before (and PS2 was my jam, back when I had time to review and look into pretty much all and every game release back then).
Once again, I appreciate opinions are opinions, but as far as journalistic integrity goes, would be nice if you're going to label and use the word "classic" that we actually include classics, as in games that were hits and well received across the entire community, rather than a niche release.
Great List!
Would personally love to see the original command and conquer games on ps4.
I rarely criticise SONY but their PS1 and PS2 games line up on the PS4 is DREADFUL :-/ I really hope the PS5 has 'FULL PS DISC Playback' because that is the only way I can play my massive PS Disc collection(it will never happen tho, which is a shame)
SSX Tricky instead of SSX 3? Tricky was great, but c'mon. SSX3 was the consoles best game!
YES I WANT BLACK ON PS4 IV BEEN WEIGHTING FOR SO LONG
No Tenkaichi 3 triggered me beyond belief 😅 the game basically had the entire history of everything and anything related to Dragon Ball, Z and GT condensed into one package.
Really quite a letdown how underutilised the PS2 Classics are on PS4. Missing tons of games that were on the PS3, let alone the games that aren't on either. It has a few games that aren't on PS3 though, at least.
If PS5 really does come to have backwards compatibility it better be full, and not an Xbox style approach, because precedent shows we'd get very little games.
As much as I want BC on PS5, if it doesnt come with trophy support for the games I could care less past the PS4.
It’s crazy think that this machine is now 20 years old...
this article is nearly 3 years old. something tells me sony dropped its curated ps2 games on ps4 a long time ago lol... maybe we can hope these games find their way onto ps5 with physical b/c instead.
@get2sammyb great article! Freedom fighters and timesplitters would be top of the lost for me
Im not normally keen on rereleasing old games weve already played but as far as full on remakes id LOVE to see... Fatal frame 1-3 almost more than anything!! & oohhh in VR!!!
Silenthill 1-3,
Bully, the warriors, manhunt, darkwatch...
Off the top of my head
Onimusha Collection, please. Would be amazing if it was 1-4 plus that SRPG spin-off, Tactics (though it was GBA not PS2), plus that Smash Bros type spin-off, but just 2-4 would be good since we already have Warlords.
The lack of Socom on this list disturbs me...
Any minute now...
I suspect half the problem with these games is a licencing issue from old/taken-over/dead studios?
Thing is, some games (like the aforementioned Champions of Norrath) are Sony IP published by Sony so there shouldn't be any reason for those not getting a remaster.
Might search fleabay to see if I can get hold of a decent 2nd hand PS2 as it's the only console I can't emulate any more since my fat PS3 melted its solder a few years back.
Sly, Ratchet and Silent Hill trilogy, yeah! Though, the HD SH collection proved they lost the final builds of the games so would need a remake for those. Though, what I really have wanted for a while is Burnout 3 with online play. It was my favourite, completed it 3 times. My partner would love Nightmare Before Christmas, though. Just recently bought an old Ps3 for backwards compatibility and got her that game, so we can play all ps1 to ps4 titles now. However, having 2 machines is not as tidy as having one xD
They should BRING BACK SIMPSONS SKATEBOARDING FOR PS5 I wasn't able to play my disc on the PS4
@rjejr I know this comment is 3 (almost 4) years late, but good lord were you an annoying git back in 2017.
@DreamerAbe86 Considering how the last 4 years have been in the US, and to a lesser extent in the UK, I like to think of myself as ahead of the curve. 😎
Just skimmed over the comments. Looks like just sammy and I? He and I go way back to before PS got taken over by the NL guys when sammy was the only employee and I was the only person posting, maybe 12 years ago now, so that's just playful banter for us. He put's up w/ me b/c I know who Dua Lipa is.
@rjejr Hey, that's something we both can agree on: The last four years have been sh*t.
I just thought you were a bit rude to Sammy. But if you both know each other from way back when, then I get you were just busting his chops.
Also, Dua Lipa ftw. One of the few pop stars I like.
@DreamerAbe86 Oh, I was certainly busting his chops. 😂
After seeing Dua Lipa on SNL this weekend I still don't think I know any of her songs but she has been 1 of the best things in my Instagram feed. I do like her singing voice better than Grande.
