Coronavirus has thrown the entire globe for a loop, so it’s only natural that video games should be affected. This week saw indefinite delays to The Last of Us: Part II and Marvel’s Iron Man VR, and while Ghost of Tsushima’s release date seems safe for the time being, Sony has suggested that it may need to provide further updates in the future.
Asked which other companies could announce similar delays, respected Kotaku journalist Jason Schreier responded: “All of them.” A brief look at new PS4 game release dates in 2020 shows that the calendar is looking a little light beyond the on-time Final Fantasy VII Remake, but there’s a good chance Marvel’s Avengers and Cyberpunk 2077 will be affected.
Other, lower profile titles like Fast & Furious Crossroads are also unlikely to hit their intended release window. It’s going to be interesting to see what impact this all has on the PS5’s release date, which is currently anticipated Holiday 2020 but could easily be postponed. Could this prove a good opportunity for you to catch up on your backlog?

Every aspect of life is getting hit by this pandemic, so delays should be expected for most major releases. Still surprised we're getting FFVII Remake with all this going on, frankly.
Yeah the issue is all about logistics and infrastructure now and cost savings. A lot of business is weighing up furloughs and temp shutdowns since they can't ship their products in the correct volumes globally. One of the key reasons for TLOU was that they couldn't guarantee launching across all regions and that would be bad on sales and reception.
I think it's wise for devs to not announce games with a "coming this year" tag.
Recently annouced Games with a release window of this year like mortal shell Will most likely not make it.
Perhaps games that only release digital might but even than i could see Some getting delayed aswell just to be sure.
I know a friend of mine has received Final Fantasy VII Remake early, I'm raging, he's not even playing it, still on The Witcher 3
It's going to be a strange end to the year and a strange end for this current generation. I would imagine that a lot of these delayed games and possibly soon to be delayed games will be eying up a Christmas release instead. This will I guess give Sony and Microsoft a bit of a headache, as they will either have to release these games on the PS5, or push console releases into the spring of 2021. I cannot see these huge PS4 games getting released the same time as a brand new console. Sure cross gen play will be enabled but they will probably need to market these games as PS5 and Xbox Series X games instead of current gen games if they are not going to move the console release dates.
@RogerRoger So well said. I have nothing to add, just wanted to recognize such a well thought out and reasoned response to all these delays.
All this hearing about potential delays is getting tiresome. Things will get delayed, but there's no point in worrying about it until a delay is confirmed.
I honestly believe that FF remake will be the last big title for at least 6 months
I love how Jason Schreier is basically Thanos now.
This won’t just affect games. Movie and TV production studios are shutting down production as well. If this continues into the unforeseen future, which I have no reason to believe it won’t, we will run into a major content shortage.
So yes, my backlog will come in quite handy.
That's OK I plan on playing it on a PS5 anyway.
@feral1975 Your friend sounds like a wise fellow.
@ApostateMage Heh heh! Maybe
@feral1975 That's so weird because I just got FFVIIR and Witcher 3 was in the disc tray, and immediately got ripped out! 😂
Nothing will surprise me at this point honestly. I think it's just safe to assume that anything we were expecting for 2020 (games wise or otherwise) will probably not come at its intended time.
@Crimson_Ridley
That's the spirit!
@redd214 yeah, that's pretty much my conclusion. I said to the Mrs the other day that basically our plans are on hold for a year.
The way things are going all the big games that are/were due to release this year - TLoU 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Cyberpunk 2077 etc - will all become PS5 launch games. Saying that, that would make for an incredible launch line-up!
Again Google Stadia is ahead of the curve - its game release schedule dried up before coronavirus even hit.
