A global pandemic is good news for Nintendo apparently, as Switch registered absurd sales figures greater than its launch. But the NPD sales report for March 2020 in the United States also includes positive news for PlayStation, as a spate of exclusive software performed particularly well on the Japanese giant’s flagship format.
MLB The Show 20 is one such release, which didn’t even have a real-world baseball season to propel it to the fastest-selling instalment in series history. It entered third in the overall best-sellers list, behind juggernauts Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. It also topped the PlayStation platform chart.
Elsewhere, Persona 5 Royal put in a very positive performance, outselling remake Resident Evil 3 on PS4 specifically – and finishing seventh in the overall software charts. Nioh 2 narrowly missed out on a Top Ten finish in 11th position, while timed exclusive Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered secured 20th place on digital sales alone.
As alluded to earlier, the Nintendo Switch was by far the best-selling hardware platform, but the PS4 also enjoyed an increase of 25 per cent year-over-year, which is impressive for a console in its twilight years. We’ve included all the relevant sales charts below, so have a browse and let us know what you’ve been buying during the pandemic in the comments section below.

Great news for a console well into its twilight years.
Its been a bad month for everyone, but thank goodness gaming is around to help make things just a little bit better. Pleased to see all three major consoles doing well.
A bit mad that Persona 5 Royal outsold Resi 3 on PS4.
At this rate, GTA 5 will be in the top 10 until R* decides to pull support.
@Arugula
"I expect F1 will do very well too"
Yeah. F12019 has been a lifeline for me. Always did the weekend events before the races during the season. But this year it is all we have for now.
Well only Baseball game worth playing and there is no season (yet)
PS4 has really made being stuck at home a lot easier. Also helps me keep in touch with my co-workers and family I never see now.
Best 7 year old gaming investment by far. Not surprised it still selling well this far in.
@ShogunRok I guess sometimes quality does count. It's such a shame the general populace can't get behind the brilliance of Persona 5. I wonder if it'll outsell the original P5.
How the hell is Resident Evil 3 Remake on that list? It didn't even come out in March, it came out in April.
@GigaGaia It’s just the weird way they divide the dates up.
Already got my persona 5 royal steelbok, can't wait to play it after I'm done with ff7 remake 😃
Wait, so Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered got a retail release too? I thought it was download only.
Or does the chart also track download only games?
Final Fantasy VII Remake on the HDTV. Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the couch when I'm watching TV with my family, or in bed right before I get ready to snuggle in. The world is a scary place right now, but, as a gamer, this is the most contended I've been all generation.
Did Resident Evil 3 underperform on the PS4, or has the Persona brand really become so popular in the States that it's outselling major AAA releases from bigger publishers?
It's kind of insulting to give the credit to the pandemic, which is being blown way out of proportion. The Switch would have likely sold twice as good if not for the shortages thanks to Animal Crossing alone. To say it only sold because people are stuck inside (which in reality aren't that many people. My cities are all still bustling) gives off a bias vibe. Just as PS4 increased due to FF7 (shameful, unfortunately), Switch increased due to AC. Great games sell consoles and AC was nearly as hyped as FF7.
@Ralizah Well Joker being in SSBU made a lot of Smash fans interested in the series
@clvr It tracks digital sales for most titles, too. However, some publishers choose not to disclose their numbers to NPD.
@ShogunRok why?
Res3 remake is garbage in terms of content and length, it should be a dlc. Finished the game in 4h and second playthrough in 1h45.
Persona 5 you have more than 100hours of content
@Thesushiking I'm not talking about quality or length, it's just that Resi 3 has much more mainstream appeal. Plus, Persona 5 Royal is essentially a re-release. On the basis of that alone, you'd think Resi 3 would sell better than it has.
Maybe negative word of mouth has had an effect on Resi 3. Maybe more people have gone for Royal because everyone's stuck at home and they want a long game. Tough to say.
Does anybody know the actual number of consoles sold?
@get2sammyb oh I see, I thought it added digital sales numbers to some retail titles but without counting digital only releases.
Thanks for the info!
Can we chill with the incessant switch praise please? The Ps4 has sold 112 million units at this point, about double the switch.
Honestly Sony already did what the switch is doing with the psp!! It had a cable to play it on the t.v. and that was what 12 years ago! If they did that with vita instead of trying to sell pstv it would have sold much better!
@Exlee300p The PS4 sold 112 million? Wow. It’s almost as if the PS4 has been around longer or something. Btw the Gameboy Player did that before the psp. Stop hating bro.
@Thesushiking imagine comparing Resident evil with one of the longest jrbgs. I mean i prefer persona but comparing a known short series (Re7 and Re2R can both be finished under 4 hours) even FF7 remake doesn't come close to persona.
@Akurusu I'm not hating bro'. But on a playstation site it would be nice to not see the constant nintendo hype. But this site like almost every other site is constantly going on about how amazing the switch is. If I wanted to hear about the switch I would go to Nintendo Power. Also I understand the Ps4 has been around longer and that's why they have sold more. That's exactly my point. Most people who want a Ps4 have already bought one by now.
@GoblinKing86 It's not insulting. It's the truth. There's so much arrogance and misinformation in your post. SMH.
@Exlee300p Facts are facts, whether you like it or not. Credit to Sammy for simply stating what is true.
Apparently you don't know what arrogance or misinformation means because neither of them were present in my comment. I don't have anything against the switch but because this is a playstation site I don't want to hear how amazingly the switch is selling. And then to top it off he didn't even include the hardware sales numbers of the systems. As a playstation site I believe the headline should have been about the playstation being 25% better over the same time last year. Not omg the switch is kicking ass. To me it just seems incongruous with a playstation site. But please enlighten me what part of what i said was misinformation or arrogant?
@Exlee300p Okay, and? Furthermore, there is no constant talk about Nintendo. This is the first in a long time. They can commend another companies if they want to. It’s called giving credit where it’s due. Get over yourself. I’m happy to tell you it won’t be the last time you hear about Nintendo doing good on here.
