2020 was supposed to be one of the best years of the PlayStation 4 generation, a true swansong for Sony's current-gen console. But then the Coronavirus came along and turned those hopes and dreams on their head. It's currently Tuesday 14th April 2020, Final Fantasy VII Remake has just released, and we're now staring down the barrel of a very, very barren couple of months in terms of big AAA game releases. The Last of Us: Part II and Marvel's Iron Man VR have both been delayed indefinitely, and we expect Ghost of Tsushima to join them before too long.
These are unprecedented times, of course -- COVID-19 has completely wiped out human interaction outside of the home, meaning developers cannot congregate on a daily basis to continue work on their games. So, what do we actually have to look forward to? Predator: Hunting Grounds and Trials of Mana both launch on PS4 in 10 days time, while John Wick Hex arrives in early May. The Wonderful 101 Remastered and Saints Row The Third Remastered round out next month...and then that's sort of it when it comes to titles with confirmed release dates. It's not until September that we can point towards a solid day to expect large scale video games to release with Marvel's Avengers and Cyberpunk 2077.
Again, this is most definitely not the fault of the hard-working studios themselves, but the upcoming months may have to be a stretch of time where you focus on your backlog like never before. Could indie games rescue the release calender? We'll have to wait and see. What PS4 games do you plan on playing for the first time or revisiting during this downtime? Summer drought starts early this year!
good thing i have a HUGE backlog to work through, that could keep me going until well into next year if need be
I have a massive backlog so at least Iβll have that to rely on. At least this way I wonβt be tempted to spend any more money!
Well, at least now I can play my free games from epic games store (mutant year zero is pretty good) and my backlog from steam. And of course my main game right now, final fantasy 7 remaster
I've already managed to take a big chunk out of my backlog but I've got plenty of games I want to do extra trophy runs on and certain games I'm eager to replay. Plus things like GT Sport and Dreams which could soak up tons of time.
This is all before I even dip into Playstation Plus games I've never touched. Running out of things to play won't be an issue.
Whats gonna happen now is all these AAA games are gonna get crammed together this fall and suffer. I originally planned on getting The Last of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and Cyberpunk. Now I can tell I'm gonna have to make a choice between the 3 with what's already coming in the fall, plus the release of these consoles.
This drought comes as blessing to complete my backlog..........
The big question is. When/ if this home isolation is over. Do all the game come out at the same time?! Now that will be painful for my wallet... π΄
Hellpoint delayed to Q2 2020.... π
I feel like a lot of us have been asking for the industry to pause for a while anyway while we catch up on all the brilliant games we've missed
I have a buttload of unplayed games, including Red Dead Redemption 2, Shenmue III, Last Guardian, Darksiders III, plus half a dozen games I need to finish.
I'm sad The Last of Us Part 2 was delayed, but honestly, having time to catch up and then maybe even thin out of my PS4 collection is going to be appreciated.
Plus, Wonderful 101 and Streets of Rage 4 should be nice new experiences.
Oh gosh, they really should have delayed Hunting Grounds. That beta was so bad. Fun, but bad.
Other than those youβve already mentioned the are four games Iβm interested in with dates this year.
Trials at Mana on April 24
Sakura wars on April 28
Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen on May 26
Shantae and the Seven Sirens on May 28
Hopefully none of them get delayed....
I havenβt got much of a βbacklogβ as such, but I do have plenty of really good games that Iβve only played through once and would love to either 1) play through again, or 2) play on NG+ where applicable. Such titles include Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4, God of War, Spider-man, Days Gone, and many more.
so many games to play so no problem here:) I really hope The Last Of Us 2 & Ghost of Tsushima and Cyberpunk come out by the end of the year & I'm happy.
I am fine if they hold everything to launch on PS5. I have way to many unopened games and joined PS Now for $59 for the year!
Animal Crossing it is then!
Although, honestly thats it for me now until PS5 really. I will get Resi 3 and Doom Eternal this year but everything I wanted is now already out so roll on next gen.
Ghosts and Cyberpunk look great but I can take or leave them for now.
Still waiting for that Streets of Rage 4 release date...
@Gelloh Yeah SOR4 is a good shout too.
A good way to finish your backlog of games.things are crazy now.enjoy and play all your backlog.word up son
I've got plenty of games to look forward to, this is giving me a great opportunity to bolster my Saturn collection whilst trawling the PS3 store for games that I've missed such as Daytona USA and the quite brilliant Sonic All Star Racing Transformed. If there's one thing I'm not short of right now its games and let's face it, this was a pretty empty calendar leading up to the new consoles anyway
Good, bring on the next gen already! With more Ratchet & Clank games too, or decent 3d platformers in general.
No 'AAA' games??? Now I know how Xbox Gamers feel(last year and the year before that and the year before that...)
Just have them run on PS5 by Christmas - and I'll be a happy camper.
I just care about NEW games. Still have s few on my list.
1. XCOM: Chimera Squad (PC) April 24
2. Sakura Wars (PS4) April 28
3. Gears Tactics (PC Game Pass) April 28
4. Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris (PS4) May 23rd
5. Ghost of Tsushima (PS4) Jun 26th
6. Fairy Tails (Switch) Jun 26th (1st Switch game since LM3 π€¦ββοΈ)
7. Marvel's Avengers (PS4) September 4
8. CyberPunk (PC) September 17
9. The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope (PS4) Summer
10. Cold Steel 4 (PS4) FALL
How about Yakuza 7?
@Rob_230 That doesn't have a release date, unfortunately.
@carlos82 i've been playing saturn games lately via reroarch. even on a 5 year old laptop, the games run GREAT! panzer dragoon saga and dragon force 1 and 2 (english fan translation) all run perfectly fine at 60fps. with saturn emulation being so problematic for the 20 years prior, i never thought we would get to this point. since sega has shown little to no interest in porting the hard to come by saturn games, this is great news for preservation and exposure to the saturn library as so many people missed out on the console at the time of release (for obvious reasons).
I donβt do backlogs! I play and complete a game before moving on and buying others, so my game situation is quite dire π Iβve luckily already gone through the phase of playing 15 mins of a game before switching, bored, not knowing what to play, so Iβve decided to start reading the Witcher Books! Canβt get enough of the world, so itβs time I tackle them.
@LN78 Yeah, same.
@Porco yeah the last time I tried it a few years ago it was pretty awful. Seems to be in good shape these days though but I'm a sucker for original hardware, that said the Polymega is looking like a great proposition now to play my Saturn games on my 4K TV
@carlos82 For you maybe i have 10 plus games waiting. π
@Flaming_Kaiser and more power to you, to be fair I'm playing more and more older games these days
@LN78
I almost got rid of my backlog when playstation just started that springtime sales and after buying a dozen of games, I am back where I started.
Damn you Sony. Damn you
As if the next generation consoles can't also be delayed by this.
I'm hoping Sakura Wars releases on time, and I really don't want GoT to get delayed, but I'm got to brace myself for it. I want Sakura to release to tide me over though.
I'm fine with it. After Persona 5 Royal, Doom Eternal, and FF7R Im fine with it
I expect them to continue next year due to the PS5 releas date being brought forward
Currently playing the original persona 5 which will take me to the summer at least. This will hopefully stop me from buying more games in the sale but who knows. πππππ
Like a few others on here I have a backlog and probably don't need to buy any new games in the immediate future.
Still, it's sad that there have been so many delays although don't forget some of these occured before the virus really messed things up.
I'm not sure the PS5 will be released this year anyway. The Xbox might but nobody cares about that. π
its only a barren months of AAA game releases. the ps4 have never been barrent for games. so this is nothing to cry over, since there is plenty of games to pick from.
Itβs crazy how we have all these massive backlogs. As a kid this was not even close to a thing. You got a game, and then played the hell out of it over and over until the next holiday/birthday hahah.
I just want a release date for destroy all humans 1 and lego star wars Skywalker saga.
@carlos82 You should try Dig 2 its a lot of fun. Bought it cheap no remorse here.
@Flaming_Kaiser Dig 2?
@carlos82 Steam World Dig 2 a 2D metriodvania.
No complaints here, I got a massive gaming backlog that should last me 3-4 years, especially with my full time job getting in the way of my free time.
I work at an Amazon warehouse/fulfillment center, which means no working from home or the business shutting down.
