Persona 5 Royal is finally available here in the West on PlayStation 4, and if you haven't already seen our review, we absolutely loved it. But the incredibly lengthy role-playing game is releasing just as the schedule is starting to look crowded. We've got Resident Evil 3 coming up in just a few days, and then it's off to Midgar for Final Fantasy VII Remake.
And so we're here today to ask you: have you bought Persona 5 Royal? Might you be buying it in the future? Have you already played Persona 5? Vote in our polls, and then show us a change of heart in the comments section below.

I received my CE yesterday. The mask is pretty nice.
Had it pre-ordered, I couldn't resist that sexy steelcase. I've not started playing it yet though, going to wait a bit since it was only about a year ago when I was playing the original Persona 5.
Of course I’ll buy persona 5 royal, I already preordered the steelbook launch edition, I didn’t play persona 5 although I preordered the original game (steelbook edition) 😃
I Platinumed Persona 5, so maybe I shouldn't get Royal as it has little new stuff for me who played the original for 300 hours...
Nah, I preordered Royal. I loved the original, and I can't wait to play an even better version.
Still waiting for Persona 5 royal to get here because of all this virus junk going on
had it for ps3 will buy again but only on sale
I'm playing Persona 5 right now (over 50 hours in) but this wasn't an option.
😢
I think it's pretty darn great.
I didn't preorder until the 28th, but it's due to arrive only 2 days late, which I'm plenty happy with! Really wanted that steelbook and dynamic theme 😉 Started base game last year, but never got even close to finishing it.
Got Persona 5 two years ago.
130 hours later. Loved it but can't see myself ever replaying it. It took me 6 months to complete and even with the quarantine, i have other games i have yet to play.
Those that have never played persona 5 should defs get this though
I'll get it when it's on sale. I replayed the original P5 recently and I don't want to play it without being rushed to finish it because of FFVIIR being so close to release.
Great Poll guys!
Does anyone else think their business model is odd? Why not just release the improvements as DLC? I wonder how many people buy both at full price. It doesn't seem consumer friendly.
Anyways, I have interest in this game, but I haven't played a jrpg in YEARS. Ok, actually I did play the FFVIIR demo. This game looks so dang stylish though. I put myself down for wait for a sale (maybe).
well my money is earmarked for FFVII Remake so i don't have it yet, i will get it eventually though
Not yet, but I will. This is just such a cluttered time to devote to a hundred hour RPG.
Received my steelbook version sunday.Have yet to start playing it but I really can't wait so I'll probably start it within the next week.
Played Persona 5 (which I also had the Steel book version) for about 116 hours..it would of been longer but that damn cat kept telling me to go to.sleep..
In a nutshell, no.
@Crazybuttocks198
Fascinating.
I finished Persona 5 and it was great, I don't have any desire to play this though just for a few additions and tweaks, had some of it been incorporated through dlc that may have been different
Wasn’t planning on getting it but lockdown is boring so I did in the end. Should keep me busy for a couple of weeks.
I guess I technically pre-ordered it but only did so after I’d heard other people had already received their copies. I got it one day before release day.
I'll buy it later when it's on sale. The additions seem mostly pretty good, but totally undeserving of a separate retail release, imo. I wouldn't mind so much if it was paired with a release on a new platform, like P4G, but there's no reason this couldn't have been premium DLC.
@Akimi Some of the changes seem like they'd be difficult to include as DLC, including engine upgrades. Maybe if they forced you to use a fresh save file it could work?

@Orpheus79V
Hmm, maybe. Persona 5 Royal reminds me of the way the Civilization games do post game DLC, or even the new XCOM games. So it seems possible. Not sure how they handle the new save file in those Firaxis games.
Beat the original 3 times, currently about 25 hours deep in this. It might be my favourite game ever.
Definitely on the buy list! Unfortunately falls too close to FF7 and RE3 so I gotta put it on hold 😕
Pre-ordered, a few subtle differences to that of the original but all in all, I love it
Finished the original one, will buy this one when I can get it for 20€
I received my copy today and since this is my first Persona ever it feels completely fresh to me.
Besides the steelbook I also got a golden card, but I still have to find a way to use it in a legal way... Suggestions?
I got my copy today. I’ll probably start it later tonight or tomorrow. I’m excited.
I played it a little because of Smash hype. Was enjoying it. Fortunately, didn't really went very far, so I'm excited to play this when it eventually goes on sale, the QoL improvements sound great.
Alright so the game finally came in. Been enjoying it so far
@Akimi I bought both sorry. 😆
Not yet.
Persona 5 is one of my favourite games of all time, but I’ve still got Nioh 2 in my backlog.
It’s going to have to wait unfortunately.
I loved Persona 5 but Royal is the definition of perfection! I hope more people get to experience this masterpiece now
Not until/unless they offer a paid upgrade. No reason not to other than greed.
completed and lived persona 5 but I'll just wait for persona 6
Got Person 4 Golden on Vita. I just didn't get it. Played few hours and it was so dull and tedious!
@Flaming_Kaiser
Nothing wrong with that. As soon as I heard that there was going to be an upgraded version of Persona 5, my brain threw interest in the original out the window.
@Deadlyblack how many tracks are on the cd? Thats the bit i really wanted. I got the 14 track cd from the special edition of the original release of P5, which is great. But i couldnt justify spending more than the cost of the standard steelbook edition this time
Na. Played it on PS4, Finished it, In my closet. Not really paying $60 to play a game again. Or even investing the time.
This is why I gave up on my Switch last month.
Give me 6 on PS5... and you got my cash.
No chance. I refuse to support Atlus for their frankly disgusting DLC tactics.
@Rob_230 The soundtrack has 10 tracks, all Royal songs.
Haven't bought yet cause I'm poor and I ended up buying nioh 2 which is amazing. But I'm definitely getting it physically sale or not
I'm honestly still holding out for the tiny tiny chance of a Switch Port. If it doesn't come, then I can always play it on PS4.
I loved P5, but I'll have to wait a bit before getting to Royal, my money went to RE3 and FF7 instead. Probably gonna wait for a sale on that Ultimate Edition with all the DLC.
@Heavyarms55 After Catherine's announcement, I'm half expecting a port of it to come.
I am truly loving the game so far after finishing the og p5! Small and big changes to the game are in so many areas of the game so far and I only beat the first palace! It fixed some of the issues like making the palaces less of a straight forward path and giving us more exploration and utilizing the third eye a lot more! I hope the rest of the palaces have more changes and especially the Okumura Palace. While that palace was pretty bad I don't think it's out right terrible.
@Arugula Right? I didn’t even pay full price for mine. I love Persona 5, but there was no way I was paying $60 for DLC.
Finished the original more than once, pre-ordered the digital version here.
And while there's admittedly a lot of retread, there's also a lot of added value in what's interwoven, even in the early going. Sharp-eyed players will be able to spot principal characters in some new places, and it looks like there's a bit more foreshadowing.
They added voiced lines to most of the important story sequences that had been text-only, which is nice.
The additional time you get at night, is a godsend. Crosswords now become free actions if you successfully solve them, so hey, Knowledge boost in no time. Breaking out the mop not only improves your Kindness, but gives you points with Sojiro. You get so much extra time at night, that if you run out of coffee or lockpicks in this version, that's honestly on you. The work desk now lets you craft multiple items with a single command, which will save you gobs of time when your Proficiency gets up there.
The camera now moves where you want it to, when you're sneaking. The home shopping channel now offers you a CHOICE of what to get, and some of the decisions aren't clear-cut. Negotiations are a LOT less obtuse.
Transitions are quicker, and the wipe graphics have gotten an even more stylish update. The added character portraits are subtle, but effective. The Assist function...the Assist function, full stop. I could go on.
Point is, this was ABSOLUTELY worth the price of admission, even as a returning player. There are SO many additional decisions for you to make, and the quality of life improvements are substantial. And that's before you even get to the splashy new stuff.
I'm normally not one to gush in print, but WOW, this was worth every penny.
Of course! And I bought and completed the original. Persona has been a real gem and one of the contenders for my game of the gen.
It's truly something special. Playing it again has caused one of those rare occasions I didn't want to go to bed and clocked in just over 12 hours on the first day.
Perfect for the lockdown we're having.
@Akimi I totally understand. 😆 👌
Yeah, I bought it on the strength of reviews from websites like this one and IGN. I'm about five hours in (Ann has just joined up with us).
Whilst I understand that this is a 100 hour or so experience so 5 hours is basically nothing, I'm starting to question why this game is so great. In the past in-game week I basically sat there with auto-scroll on while I watched my character and his mate have various conversation. Finally the time came to go into the Castle and yet more reading occurred with the occasional fight that was over in less than a minute. Basically, it feels more like I'm reading a book and less like I'm playing a game and frankly, if I wanted to read a book, I could do that without my PS4.
I'm gonna give it another few nights to see where this goes. I'm no stranger to JRPGs so I know that sometimes they need a little while to get going. Hopefully that happens soon though because honestly, so far, I'm feeling a lot of buyers remorse.
@LivingLeif The first few hours are definitely heavy on both plot exposition and play explanation. It's a slow burn, and rather infamously so.
Hang in there, though. Once the training wheels come off, so to speak, it does pick up speed, and in some places, literally so. You'll have more places to go, more things to do, and more Confidants to juggle.
There's a lot to keep straight, and rather than throw you to the wolves and overload you with it all up front, the game parcels it out to make sure you "get it" before moving on.
Personally, I think that's a feature, not a bug. I'd rather deal with a learning curve that errs on the side of being too gentle, than too steep, know what I mean?
@JohnnySeraph People are so much more impatient nowadays. I blame YouTube!
😉
I am playing the original at present, just finished the 4th epic Palace, and everytime I think the game has peaked it gets better and better.
I normally have one main game I play and a couple of others I dip in and out of. With Persona 5 though it's the ONLY game I wish to play. Last time I was like this was when playing The Witcher 3 last summer and before that RDR2 when it was first released.
For me anyway this is one heck of a special game.
I imagine I'll play Royal at some point in the future.
@Trajan I have not used it since LM3. My next game is not till Jun 30th with Fairy Tail
After the last Direct was full of even more old games I know there is nothing for me till "the fall" with Bravely Default 2.
I put it away till then and been using my GeForce NOW new set-up! ($64 CoolPad Phone + $29 Controller)
Played the original 3 or 4 times. Have the platinum for it. Love the game so much! I was tempted to do another playthrough only I had to force myself to stop playing so other games can get some love too.
Pre-ordered the collectors edition for P5R but won't be playing it just yet. Going to play Final Fantasy 7 remake first
No Ill keep it. Metroid, Bayonetta3 and the new Zeda will be out at some point. Just not actively following it.
Yeah - my PS4 makes being stuck at home easier!
@Akimi I feel the same way, they could've made it DLC for 30 or 40 bucks, just don't think it's worth $60 honestly. There are plenty of games to hold me over until a sale comes. Atlus is just testing the cow before they start milking it.
