We've had a great time covering some of the fanmade mock-ups of the PlayStation 5 console, its controller, and game cases here at Push Square, and now you can add one more to the list. This creation comes from Reddit user ruddi2020, who has taken it upon themselves to showcase their take on what the PS5's cases could look like on physical shelves.
We really quite like this design. The use of cardboard makes for a slim and sleek look coupled with a striking orange colour used to make the "Only on PlayStation" branding truly stand out. Dying Light 2 and Ghost of Tsushima are excellent examples of how this design could work, although it doesn't incorporate the two-tone use of the PS5 DualSense controller. We're willing to bet that PS5 game cases will use that design as well, but we'll have to wait for confirmation of that.
Either way, this cardboard mock-up is definitely a fantastic one. Could you be persuaded into buying cardboard game cases next-generation? Take care of your collection in the comments below.

Would be interesting to see them go with a square box again, but I think the cases are likely to be a familiar size and shape. Still, cool concept.
That PS5 logo cutting into the picture at the top of the box reminds me of the ugly notches that a lot of smartphones have these days. I'm not too fond of this design.
what is the protag of Ghosts of Tsushima holding in his hand?
I know when I buy physical game's I don't take the disc out & throw away the plastic box, I am not sure anyone one is. Buying games in cardboard boxes I am not really sure how that'll save plant earth, while at the same time ignoring other parts of the planet that are a lot worse.
@eumenes He's holding the mask he wears while he's acting as the Ghost.
Keeping cardboard boxes of older games in pristine condition is tough enough; I hope they stick with either plastic or metal. With so many people going digital, let that be the eco-friendly option. By all means reduce the disc size, make the plastic thinner and out of more easily recyclable material but I hope they continue to use durable material.
I’d have to end up handling my games over a pillow as my butterfingers have dropped enough games in the past and I’d prefer not to have half my collection with dented corners.
@No_Cartridge They look to me like the size of a regular CD case. You can't get much smaller than that.
I'm kinda into this.
Having to properly look after the box for each game would make for an interesting change and could add something to having a physical copy of a game again.
I do hope they change the size of the box anyway though. I'm done with that blu-ray shape box.
I quite like these.
@banacheck Because there are billions of plastic cases out there and their owners aren't immortal. One day, eventually, those games and cases are getting thrown out.
Also to get the plastic in the first place you need crude oil which leads to loads of other environmental problems.
It looks good. I hope Sony do something similar. I cannot wait for the console. They need to reveal it ASAP can't take much of this torture.
@Quintumply ah I see.
@FX102A The problem with that argument is that games aren’t printed to order, they manufacture a certain level of stock whether people are going to buy digital to be eco-friendly or not. Dented corners are the least of our concerns in the long run.
If they were to use cardboard I'd prefer them to be in slimmer slip cases to maximise shelf space.
Or thin cd jewel cases.
A little nod to the days of the PS1 design is welcome though.
How about making the case a hardcover Artbook/Manual the size of a cd case.
Why would you design your controller to look all futuristic
and your box to look like a PS3 box?
And why even bother with the "Only on Playstation" design when it seems like a lot of games may go to PC eventually anyway? Are they going to make a "Console Exclusive" box instead?
Not sure what the box art will look like but I'd guess more modern than retro.
The 4k ultra logo is ok. This could be a "Heavenly Sword" sequel.
@Matroska Yeah because you buy games on a daily basis and then you throw away the plastic like you do daily with table water oh wait.
@rjejr Maybe because people still believe that Horizon:Zero Dawn and possibly Dreams coming to PC are isolated cases, meaning no more first-party IP-s won't come to PC (plus there is a good reasoning behind HZD being ported to PC because of Decima engine).
This is why a lot of people, including myself, changed their minds from ''purchasing PS5 day one'' to ''maybe i will buy it after 2-3 years or simply upgrade my PC''.
There is still no 100% certainty at this point and that is why you will see people making mock-ups like this one with ''Only on Playstation'' brand.
@kingeo Well done on having zero reading comprehension. You won't be around forever. Even if you keep all your games until you die, what then? You think in 400 years your ancestors will be passing down your game collection like some kind of hallowed heirloom?
And then multiply that by millions, for every gamer in the world. There are countless tonnes of plastic game cases that won't always be on people's shelves.
I mean, yes it looks cool and environment friendly sounds good but theres no point arguing about details logo, material, only on PS etc etc when this is just a mock up. 🙄
@Matroska I know that but if you have to throw them away you will recycle them, you would not be stupid enough to throw them in the garbage.
On the other hand, how often do you see those DVD cases in the trash compared to daily life necessary products like food,water, coffee etc?
I'd use cotton for the games released in spring and summer, wool in autumn and winter.
@eumenes it's his samurai mask. Common masks worn by samurai covering their mouth and nose. You can see him put it on in some of the trailers
This design is good, as long as the cardboard didn't get damaged easily, I have no problem with this design
you would have to be insane to want carboard cases. it would tear, bend and crease before it even reached your home. durability is a real concern... just take a look at some old dvds with carboard packaging. clearly no thought was put into this design other than the aesthetic. that said, i think a SQUARE case would be a neat idea, so long as it is made out of traditional plastic. it would stand out at retailers and be a focal point on the shelf next to your ps3/ps4 collection. i know some OCD people would not want the shape to change, though... does sony want to listen to all that bickering? probably not. so maybe just a colour rebranding is all that is needed for ps5 games.
@nessisonett Publishers will order a set quantity based on perceived requirements as they will want to sell through the majority as early as possible at full price and not have to dump unsold stock at reduced prices. Data shows that the % of digital sales is rising and thus companies will order reduced quantities, otherwise they’d loose money.
Besides, cardboard packaging is only preferred in general packaging of items because of its recyclability. The majority of physical game buyers don’t bin the cases after buying.
It's 2020, as a recent physical only addiction kicker (as of 2018), I laugh at the very few friends left who still go to the store, wait for an update download after installing their game, and generally pay more for it than I do. It's great to have options, these cases look fantastic, but if you're going into next gen without thinking about going all Digital then you might just be better off not going at all.
Gamesharing with two consoles in the home is by far the better way to go, especially if you have a family.
@eumenes he's holding his mask
The orange is really nice!
I get the fact that yes a lot of plastic years after will be lying waste and the production isn't eco friendly either. But why do we cut down trees the very thing we need to breathe to get recyclable materials it's madness. Paper bags actually cost more in emissions than a plastic one does. So I'll take the plastic case
I am all for getting rid of plastic but these look a bit cheap really :-/ Make them out of Glass and Metal So they look Futuristic like the DS5 controller
Oh boy. Some things need to be plastic. Not like people toss these out. They resell or keep.
Sony seems bound and determined to have my not buy their products in the upcoming generation.
@JohnGrey you realize that these packaging mockups are from fans and not sony right?
@Matroska who cares
@Matroska Still want my games in a plastic case. The carton cases suck in durability, crappy to remove. So no want cartoni dont want it i save my stuff and maybe ill pass them on thats my choice.
Make them CD sized we dont get manuals anymore anyway.
