You won’t need a headset or microphone to communicate with friends or teammates in PlayStation 5 multiplayer, as the DualSense controller includes a microphone array built-in. While this feature had previously been touted by the platform holder, it’s now confirmed that the technology can be utilised for voice chat.
“[The microphone] is ideal for jumping into a quick conversation. Of course, if you are planning to chat for a longer period, it’s good to have that headset handy,” explained Hideaki Nishino on the PlayStation Blog. There has been speculation that the PS5 also includes an Alexa-esque PlayStation Assistant feature, and it’s safe to assume that the on-board microphone will be utilised for that, too.

This is a big deal for me personally as I generally find headsets uncomfortable for extended use. In general, it’s a great idea and allows a means of communication without the need for an additional accessory purchase.
What odds for another article to talk about USB-C?
Just joking 😉 a built in microphone is a great idea
I’ve always used the microphone built into the PS4 camera. I wonder whether my teammates will be able to hear me more clearly next generation.
That's so cool. It's exceeded my expectations. Bulkier controller which will be way more comfortable than the small ps4 one and USB C alongside built in microphone. Good job SONY. Now the design we have all been waiting for..
Pretty cool but also not good for me as a few of my so called friends online I just say I can't talk cuz I don't have a mic..won't have that excuse.
@Wazeddie22
That’s a very good point actually!!
It should have a ‘the wife’s sitting next to me’ button.
Not sure I like that idea. I have friends who all talk over each other. Having to listen to your games through external speaker systems and your friends coming through the controller would create some noisy feedback loops.
at the moment we all use headsets which limits a lot of potential noise. I use to dislike the days when I heard not only their noisy 'yelling' at each other but their overly loud blaring TV's as well.
Yeah that’ll be great for hearing background noise and everyone else in games. Lovely. Honestly sounds terrible
I love the idea. The DS had a mic built in, which was used by some online games that featured chat. Wii U had a camera and mic directly on the gamepad. PS4 and Xbone have audio jacks in the controller. This tiny addition makes an enormous difference.
@Stocksy
Just mute those rude morons. Simple.
Its going to spy on you. This is the worst news Ive heard and it means its never coming in my house.
@Powerpellet you should throw out your phone then if your worried about that
@SKC_Diamond
Your phone not mine. Why wouldnt I be worried about surveillance?
Hopefully this can be disabled, if not I'll just take some wire snips to it. An always on mic is creepy AF.
@Shigurui
Thank you. I was losing all hope for the future. At least there's someone else besides me who cares about their privacy. To hell about the aesthetics of the design.
@Powerpellet no i hear you guys. I keep a piece of electrical tape covering my phone camera even lol
@Powerpellet - I'm a product of my generation mate, that bygone age when people had morals and privacy was to be respected.
@GADG3Tx87 Gah, you’re right! It’s bad enough with one guy constantly broadcasting his household ambient noise...now everyone is gonna be doing it!
@keihtg
Yes, exactly. I'm hoping that while this idea of not needing a headset is confirmed it's entirely optional. I would prefer to still use my aging but brilliant HyperX Cloud II's.
I rarely play online games but it will be cool if ps5 has online assistant so I can always ask when I’m stuck in games.
I've been looking but wasn't able to find a concrete statement.
Did they say if they removed the headset jack under the controller?
EDIT: Scratch that, I've seen that they haven't.
