Update: According to trusted journalist Jason Schreier, leaked footage of The Last of Us: Part II was apparently obtained by hackers who used a security vulnerability in a patch for an old Naughty Dog game to access the Californian developer's servers. It's apparently older videos of a development build.
Schreier continues: "Rumours of this being an act of protest by a contractor whose pay was robbed are not true. Naughty Dog actually extended pay and healthcare benefits for contractors due to COVID-19."
Original Story: The story surrounding The Last of Us: Part II has been out of control over the last week or so. It has been heavily purported that the person responsible for leaking huge story spoilers for the upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive was a disgruntled employee of developer Naughty Dog. As it turns out, this is entirely false.
Sony has finally broken silence on this sticky situation in a statement to GamesIndustry.biz. The Sony spokesperson told the publication that "it has identified the primary individuals responsible for the leaks earlier this week". The company has confirmed the leakers "were not affiliated with Sony Interactive Entertainment or Naughty Dog", putting an end to that particular chapter.
The platform holder declined to comment further on the matter, apart from to say "the information was currently subject to an ongoing investigation".
So, there you go. All that scuttlebutt about an angry employee turned out to be nonsense. The good news is that Sony seems to be onto whomever is responsible -- hopefully this whole thing will be wrapped up soon.
In other news, an unrelated viral Tweet claimed that a Naughty Dog senior game designer had left the studio to work at Microsoft’s newly minted subsidiary Double Fine. However, it appears that purported employee Edgar Newman doesn’t actually exist, and his LinkedIn profile is a fake which has since been removed. This was evidenced by various inconsistencies, like the fact that he was listed as a lead game designer on Tom Clancy’s The Division, despite another person filling that role.

I wonder how hard Sony is going to come down on the leakers. Guess it depends how they got the leaks in the first place and what they had agreed to (if anything).
This is probably damage control. They’re probably coming out and saying the people who leaked it aren’t affiliated so they can take the heat off of them. Even if this is true it still doesn’t change the fact that Naughty Dog needs to be knocked down and learn a lesson.
@Akurusu Ah yes, Sony is just lying. That’s it.
How did this happen.someone are really upset at naughty dog. For this to hapoen.like how did he get all the details.thats what im thinking.word up son
'Leakers' would be a good name for an enemy type in The Last of Us actually
It’s almost like somebody is trying to make Sony look bad in a year when a new console is releasing. Seriously though it sounds like they know who it is and I’m sure they will get what’s coming to them
If they know who did it yet are still investigating, that must mean they tracked them down by finding the source of the leak but still don't know how they got access to the info in the first place. What else is there to investigate, otherwise?
There was a notable error in that Reddit post which everybody was sourcing. "Hundreds of furloughed employees"
Okay, but Naughty Dog has a couple hundred employees, that would mean basically the entire studio isn't working, when it's confirmed they are, just from home, and that's not what furloughing means. So that was either a miscommunication between the OP and their source, or just BS. Seems to be the latter.
@LN78 I think that leaked footage had subtitles in another language, so I would guess it's from someone involved in localisation/playtesting in a different region?
@Akurusu such a pathetic conspiracy theory.
@TrueAssassin86x you should probably take your own advice sometime.
@LiamCroft
I mean maybe not, but corporations lie all the time.
I imagine the person that did this is in a lot of trouble.
Must be deleting comments left and right. Home page says 87 but i see 15. IGN levels of moderating
@Akimi While that's true, it's absurd to assume that some random Reddit posts are more reliable than an official statement from the organisation who'll be most affected by this.
These rumours had already been debunked before the statement was released, after all.
@get2sammyb not a good career move
@Nyne11Tyme Not at all. I redirected the original story, which had 87 comments, into this new one as this includes the latest news. The old article is obsolete now.
How did that footage get leaked? This is pretty interesting considering the amount of it, the quality of it, and the watermarks.
So... How did these individuals obtain this content?
Very interesting!
It's nice to have official confirmation corroborating the other reports debunking the disgruntled employee angle, though.
@Constable_What
That is the question isn't it. Trying to remember a comparable leak...and I keep thinking when the Half Life 2 source code was stolen...but I don't think any actual details came out of that.
@Constable_What For all we know an employee got hacked, since they're all working from home right now. Could be anything really.
Yeah... or just damage control. Of course corporate is going to deflect this stuff and try to discredit it.
The leaker
Omg why cant i post an image...
@Constable_What A playtester, QA contractor, etc etc.
Those are are people that may have access to the footage and are not affiliated with Sony and/or ND.
@Akurusu grow the hell up
@PunkRx_Lockly lol man you haters really wanted that disgruntled ND employee story to be true huh
So people are completely dismissing this because "corporation is official" vs "reddit". While this is a fair assumption, the complete dismissal of skepticism is hilarious, especially considering the article and commenters. Like others said, a contract worker could very well be a plausible angle. Sony, while much more reliable, also has an obligation to reduce any kind of controversy on the subject, especially since they know they can potentially keep word behind closed doors.
It was either
a) the Chinese
b) Obama
c) Democrats
d) CNN
@Octane @Athrum @Akimi The wording the press release uses implies that they found them, and that it was multiple people involved. It could have been anything, really, and it's all just speculation, but the thing that fascinates me about this is what motivated these individuals.
Did they ever ask for ransom, or did they just surprise everyone with it?
Could be anything!
@Fuzaki
People arent dismissing anything.
They always know better 🤓
@Constable_What Because leakers are leakers? So many games get leaked if they get the chance. Pokémon for example is always leaked months or weeks before release. They never asked a ransom. It's just what they do, for their 5 minutes of anonymous fame maybe. I don't know!
Ah yes, the good old Xbox and Nintendo fanboy jealousy was at it again.
@dark_knightmare2 All I'm saying is that either way corporate is going to protect the company and save face. That may or may not involve lying. One thing is for sure... We will find out in the near future.
@Akurusu
"Horrible working conditions" that's a laugh. If you want horrible working conditions try working in a meat plant or s***** factory. Get a grip man.
@Octane I was just asking rhetorically.
I didn't expect you to know. lol
@thefirst It was scheduled to release on May 29, that's still 4 weeks away, so...
The real story here isn't about the leak it's why it was leaked try to keep up dear boy!
@Akimi I remember the Half Life 2 story, apparently they guy wanted a job at Valve.
Here's my list of suspects with motivations:
Disgruntled QA tester: maybe not been paid
Microsoft through corporate hacking: attempting sabotage Sony's biggest games.
Xbots hack a ND dev: with the same goal as above.
Anti woke brigade: plan to expose plot in order to disgrace ND
Donald Trump: After drinking bleach failed, not playing TLOU2 is the new cure for coronavirus
Piers Morgan: Hadn't done anything controversial for a week so was making up for lost time.
And finally Elvis Presley: Hasn't got anything better to do.
Seriously though, we’ll probably never hear who it is and it’s probably, actually an employee that would do no good admitting too.
@LiamCroft It’s fishy to me bro. I’m not flat out saying they’re lying, they might be, but I’m not buying it. For all we know they’re trying to clear Naughty Dog’s name.
@tinCAT-zero Do some research and you’ll see.
@Akurusu
I've better things to be at tbh. I'm not about to start beating up Naughty dog because of a few stories. Everywhere you work there will always be someone who is not happy. That's life.
Can't stand the asshat on twitter who ruined the plot for me under an AC Valhalla tweet 🤬
@Akurusu "There are plenty of articles that talk about the horrible working conditions at Naughty Dog."
Several written by Jason Schrier. But if you also read his last article fully, it clearly states that ND are very open in their job interviews about what people are expected to do when it comes to 'crunch'.
He might as well be writing articles complaining that people in the military get shot at every so often.
Those who leaked it may not be associated with Sony or Naughty Dog, but if the details are as accurate as is claimed, the info would surely have had to be fed to them by someone who is?
@Akurusu You again?! Dude, if you have a problem with Sony then why are you on this website?! Take that BS over to IGN where it belongs.
@Paranoimia Ahaha! Got ‘em! @Akurusu loves to propagate an agenda against Naughty Dog even though crunch is an industry wide problem. Yet he doesn’t like propaganda like he swears The Last of Us pt. 2 is supposedly painting, how hypocritical! GTFO, dude! Take your sh— to IGN, Gamespot, etc.
So what's worse, a (perhaps former) employee leaking the game, or someone who has absolutely no affiliation to ND or Sony having full access to their games, logs and internal meetings.
@get2sammyb good man! Appreciate the clarity
@JesWood13 Did I say I have a problem with Sony? I’ve been playing Sony consoles since the PS2 and have played lots of their games and still do. If you look at some previous threads I’ve congratulated and praised them for doing certain things. But I don’t like one studio and all of a sudden it means I hate Sony... that’s the equivalent to saying I’m an Xbox fan too right?Sorry, but this is a site where people share opinions. Naughty Dog is under fire and they deserve it.
@Paranoimia So threatening to withhold paychecks is part of it? I’ll have to see more because I don’t think anyone would work under conditions like that. Naughty Dog isn’t the only one with crunch, but that doesn’t make it more or less bad. Employees being mistreated is no excuse no matter what company or what they do. If anyone truly believes this is okay, get help.
@nathanSF You Forgot Fox News
@tinCAT-zero There is going to be an unhappy person, but that doesn’t make it okay for things to continue the way they are.
Hmm I see this site likes to delete comments on here...
@Akurusu what exactly does Naughty Dog need to be knocked down? What did they do? This comment is bizarre.
If the leak has come from neither ND or Sony then who else has access to the full game? I suspect this is damage control. It doesn’t make sense for someone else to have the code.
Interesting. The plot thickens, as they say.
Since Sony identified the individual, I'm curious as well to hear what they'll do.
@tinCAT-zero Please mind the language.
@Quintumply
Apologies, I had it said before I realized.
@Orpheus79V
If you were working on localisation, they would probably just be given the script, and work from that.
@Akurusu I was only commenting on the fact that people are apparently made very aware of what it's like before they sign up, not the claims of an ex-employee, who - judging by the contents of his own Twitter thread - didn't actually seem to have it that bad at all.
You know that you can hire a freelancer without them being a part of the team right? It is easier to do so when it comes to multiple assets. Wow, these “conspiracy” theorists are a new form of idiot.
@PunkRx_Lockly you’re right we will find out and I can promise you sony wasn’t lying. I mean why in the F would Sony publicly come out and lie and take the chance of being found out and looking even worse that makes no sense lol
@Akurusu under fire for what the crunch that has been known about for years? If it’s that than go crusade for almost 90 percent of the other triple aaa devs out there that crunch like CD Projeckt Red,Rockstar etc
@PcTV you know there’s this thing called hacking right and some governments and corporations have been known to be affected by it smh
@Akurusu please quit with the conspiracy theories Jesus
@LN78 @LiamCroft @Akurusu Here's the thing, the leaker also might have had the leak not come through him directly. If the person who did the literal leak got it from a friend of a friend who's an employee, it becomes a lot harder to legally attack the person who leaked, and if they can't get in any real legal trouble, then they have no reason to trace it back to the employee, or rather for him to be given up. This is just too substantive to assume there's nothing to it or that people aren't being smart. Sony also looks better if this way too, so it could be a partial truth.
I've also looked at some of the evidence (need to see the pics) so I know exactly what leaked too with what should be it's evidence.
Avoiding Twitter and youtube until August then. If it's somebody out to hurt Sony, and it's a group of people, the question I have is did they get them all? And the follow up, if they do not have everybody, are there other games that may now also get a massive leak like Ghost of Tsushima?
Contractors, external QA testers, localizers, etc....are all AFFILIATED. Contract means affiliation. This was not an ex-employee as that has been debunked by outside sources even prior to the official statement.
@Akurusu that moron talking about withholding his paycheck is talking out of his rear end. His entire tirade is absolutely ridiculous, and doesn't line up with anything in the industry. I highly doubt a company, that has been in existence for many years, would attempt to withhold a final paycheck on the grounds of paperwork that would have been and most assuredly was signed the day they were hired. Mainly because it is ILLEGAL and would have done them no good.
My bet is, this guy didn't like having to work overtime, complained, got fired, and then had a temper tantrum on Twitter and made up some bunk story. That seems FAR more likely.
Working overtime and lots of it is what you do, period. At any job. Don't like it? Make way for someone else.
@Akurusu I want some of whatever the hell you're getting high on. You’ve got some pretty crazy delusions, man.
@ChipBoundary He’s delusional, man.
People believe the truth that suit them the best. Naughty Dog might be the big villian some are picturing, maybe not. The only thing certain in all this story is that crunch culture should be addressed and we must support the people involved in it.
Ahh good old media, if we believed and follwed everything they wrote and said, I'm sure we would be living a very different life. Some maybe true and some maybe false. Either way unless we have hard evidence on camera from the voices themselves, then it's untrue until proven otherwise. It will eventually come out if any of it is true.
@3MonthBeef Or maybe Sony is going to put things in the best possible light because that’s in their best interest? The leak is too substantive for there to be nothing to it. We can’t purely go off Sony’s statement here. The game’s sales have already been hurt, and Sony is in damage control mode.
@3MonthBeef 'conspiratorial dispositions'
The only members of the readership with conspiratorial dispositions are the ones who jump into pushsquare, create an account, chat biscuits for a day or two, then disappear.
Everyone I know who has contributed for years is usually level headed. Including yourself.
There was a leak to one of the most anticipated games in history. Thats disappointing for everyone, the developers, publishers, promoters, Pushsquare and the community. The only beneficiaries are solo youtubers with no interest in the game doing well. That's the real kick in the teeth.
Everything that's been said about Naughty Dog or reported from respectable games journalists have turned out to be spot on. Neil Druckman is a tyrant to work for, they mistreat and threaten their employees, fire game testers who don't give them the feedback "they want to hear", disagree with certain political agendas being pushed on everyone or forcing developers against their own beliefs and political views and even religion to push those agendas in the game. Anyone can see what kind of company Naughty Dog is and exactly what kind activist filth is calling all the shots after they way they did Amy Hennig, who was the best writer they had. Also any developer who collaborates and pays money to the likes of Anita Sarkeesian, is a developer to keep an eye on and worry about. I guess now it's time to start seeing articles by journalist who are friendly to the cause of clowns like Neil Druckman and Anita Sarkeesian to start damage controlling and deflecting the actual narrative away from what's reality. And once Naughty Dog or Druckman started the typical calling those who don't like what they saw of TLOU 2, bigots and homophobes, (the typical words and accusations they come off with) I was totally done with even buying this game used. Everyone I've talked with about the leaks and characters plus comments from those who also don't like what they saw and hate the story plot, was nothing whatsoever to do with the character's sexuality. We all knew Ellie was gay in the first game, they was sure to let everyone know that fact. People dislike the story and the **** character...which is another story. Doesn't matter really, the way Sony, Naughty Dog and Neil Cuckman have handled this situation with threatening YouTube channels with copyright strikes, calling fans homophobes and bigots, it's going to hurt the sales of The Last Of Us 2. Every game these activist developers have tried to push on everyone and lecture players about certain politics have ended up taking, it's as if developers haven't learned a lesson at all. What should have been one of the biggest releases of 2020, has turned into a complete disaster for all parties involved; Naughty Dog, Sony and most importantly, the TLOU fans. Shame on all of them, including the person who leaked the game. Only positive out of the who situation is I saved $60+ tax by getting my Pre-order money back. I'll play it maybe when they put it on the monthly free games with PS Plus. Now I'm sure, my comment will be deleted because it's what they do when you disagree with their articles and opinions.
@Fuzzymonkeyfunk wouldn't take much to make Sony look bad with this garbage ND has produced.
who care really? So there was a leak, and? Im still buying the game and most other people will too. This happens a the time with movies, TV shows and games and people still part with thier money. There's a difference between hearing or seeing snippets of something to experiencing it for yourself. For every exited person who vant wait to experience a new medium for the first time there's a semen receptacle waiting in the wings, ready to ruin it for nothing more than thirty seconds of fame or because they just like passing on peoples bonfires. And for all these conspiracy nuts, no one cares what songs agenda is or if ther even is one and as for terrible conditions at developers. We have all known this for years, naughty dog isn't unique in this respect and 99 percent of them all have crunches and forced overtime etc, so does the movie business. For all those bleating about that I would sincerely love to know the last game you brought? I hope it was on the SNES because if not you're hypocrites. Its like complaining about animal cruelty whilst eating a steak.
Someone who wants SONY to fail is behind this all I bet, hmm Microsoft or one of their Fanboyz I bet because they know this game will move millions of PlayStation including next-gen PlayStation's just like the first TLoU did. Well that is what I think
@dark_knightmare2 Conceivably? Because they are a business and want some kind of return on their investment I imagine. Obviously damage has been done to their reputation and what they would want - what I would want - is salvage. I doubt the leaks are false, but more important than the leaks themselves is shifting the blame for the leaks. It's about buying time through persuasion now and maintaining hype. If they can convince people the leaks did not come from within, than no matter the reviled content, people will still trust NaughtyDog from an integrity standpoint, even if they disagree with the general direction of the content. That's assuming they're lying to begin (which is suspect) with and assuming they are found out to have lied after the fact (which is not certain to happen). But just because something doesn't seem logical doesn't mean it can't be profitable, and people aren't perfect; that's why we see scandals from time to time. So let's just wait and see what happens.
In a post covid world I trust media even less then government. Even game rags.
I don't like leaks but this is one everyone should check out. The level of political agenda pushed on the player not only makes me not want to buy, but question Sony as a publisher. To be clear, I'm not talking about Ellie's sexuality, I have no problems with that and if anything I find it interesting given who she is. It's not the message that turn me off, it a terrible story that thinks by pushing "woke" tropes on the player it will be as influential as the first game without having a decent plot. It continuously attacks different political views that the director thinks he understands. To be clear the director of this game helped get a actual women (the writer behind the uncharted series) canned because she disagreed with the focus of this game. There is a way to bring new ideas artistically into a project without alienating a huge part of your fan base that supported and helped you achieve your status. I'm sick of the woke political division, we need to respect each other and learn to compromise on both sides. Projects like this don't teach they push, pull and tear.
I don't believe Sony tbh. They also lied about the PSN hack at first. But I could be wrong.
@LiamCroft they lied about the PSN hack.
@Ken_Masters ah, you're assuming I'm an Xbot. I sold my Xbox. I'm what you'd call a Sony fanboy, I've owned every PS console on day 1, even the PSP and Vita. All I play is the PlayStation.
What you're doing is whataboutary. Someone claimed Sony doesn't lie, I pointed to an example when they did lie. Me stating that doesn't mean Microsoft doesn't lie, of course they do. They all do.
@Ken_Masters it's cool ☺ you getting TLOU2?
@Ken_Masters I doubt they're fully lying, but we don't know if we're telling the whole truth. Leak might've been a developer who had the leak come from a friend of a friend to distance himself because he's smart enough not to do it himself. Just like don't know for sure that Sony is withholding anything, we also don't that they aren't by the same token.
@dark_knightmare2 I think any long time PlayStation user is fully aware of what hacking is and does, don't worry about that part.
Yeah... Pretty sure I don't believe Sony or naughty dog. Trying to convince people that they don't treat their employees like crap. Don't buy it
@Carl-G speculation is what you are doing
@Ken_Masters I'm hoping the PS4 version will just automatically be patched into a PS5 version
So it seems there will be homosexual people in assassin's creed Valhalla and you can have a relationship with them, so are all the people here bitching about woke and agenda will do the same with that game or is this a selective/fake outrage as always? Bunch of crybabies
@Lobbo95 you seem pre-emptively outraged.
@Ken_Masters me too. The leaks haven't put me off, I tried dodging the spoilers but people were persistent. I'm not sure about the direction they've taken the narrative, but I'm sure the way the plot is told in its full context will make much more sense.
@oldschool1987 agreed. These knee jerk reactions are pathetic.
@oldschool1987 maybe i am, but is annoying all this drama that's happening with tlou 2 one can't enter internet without someone spoiling any news or article or forum or YouTube videos even if they're not related with the game. And i don't understand how anyone can say if the story Is good or bad or if it has an "agenda" or not on a 25-35 hours game where the leaks are less than an hour of cutscenes and gameplay taken out of context.
@Lobbo95 it's the Internet, there's always drama, just ignore it. Everyone has their own opinions.
And I think people assume it's agenda driven because Druckmann is a massive Anita Sarkeesian fan, and said her videos inspires his work... She's one of the most toxic and hateful people on the Internet.
I personally don't care if he's pushing an agenda or not (even though he admitted he did it with the Uncharted 4 epilogue, and even fired testers, calling them sexist, because they didn't agree). I personally think the story sounds pretty interesting for TLOU2. It's risky anyway, and I kind of applaud that, it might not pay off, but at least he isn't playing it safe.
As for the potential trans character in TLOU2, if true, then that's definitely an agenda being pushed, 30 years after the world ends and people have gender reassignment surgery, and testosterone treatments? I doubt it, it wouldn't make sense in the context of the world. But I think people are wrong here, I don't think this new character is trans, I think people are spreading bull with this, or assuming it.
Well this comment thread has descended into tinfoil hat territory. Never let the facts get in the way of opinions eh?
@Athrum Those roles would qualify them as employees or affiliates. Someone else might cut their checks, but it's Sony's money and they define the terms of employment.
Far more likely, it's a relative or friend who gained access through an employee. Whether the employee knew it or not.
@JohnnyBastos perhaps but I see a lot of identity politics these days and personally hate it. I'm not anti religion and I ain't homophobic but what I see is the so called left and right going at it and both sides have flawed arguments.
Any game that contains any of this crap or takes either side ain't getting my support. This old left vs right never leads anywhere good.
@JesWood13 Not delusional. You’re just a triggered Naughty Dog fan, that’s all. The game is going to flop hard.
@Lobbo95
Odyssey was the same, I had a night with a young man 😳 lol
@dark_knightmare2 @oldschool1987 I can’t say what they’re under fire for because it’s not allowed on here.
Well, at least the resetera folks are going to buy it. That counts for something right?
@Pontenerd very good point.
@Lobbo95
I watched the spoilers and did not care for one thing in particular. Does that make me a cry baby? For having an opinion? Let's all just snuggle up in our echo chambers.
@oldschool1987
Interesting take. You're definitely right about them not playing it safe. I guess I just prefer the characters I love that way.
@Akimi me too tbh. But I hope we both enjoy it anyway
@Akurusu If critic reviews come out and the majority say it’s trash, then I’ll admit you were right! Until then, we don’t know what the full context of the plot, at all. We don’t know what character development takes place that warrants the events that take place in the spoilers. We got an hour and a half of cutscenes/gameplay out of a 30+ story. If you’re gonna go ahead and judge it based on the leaks, be my guest. Not saying Naughty Dog can do no wrong, but they haven’t dropped a bad game yet. Everyone’s so quick to hop on the outrage culture bandwagon and I can tell you’re one of them. Like I’ve said previously, get a grip.
@PcTV yeah I don’t think anyone is still thinking about something that happened almost ten years ago
@dark_knightmare2 Oh you're probably thinking about maybe the first or second time, it has happened a couple times since then. The last one happened like two years ago.
@JesWood13 New bits and pieces get leaked every day so I advise you to keep your love for ND to yourself for now before someone spoils it for you.
Yeah no the leaker still got a hold of the actual game and the story leaks were true so was all the leaked cut scenes. The story is also true sony didnt denie it wasnt they were talking about why they made the story that way. Just cuz it wasnt someone working for them doesnt mean it's fake. These were 100% true naughty dog even told people how to avoid spoilers. So yes its the actual real game leaked. They cant back peddle now. And I dont support sjw trash thats kind of the whole point here idot.
@PcTV those weren’t hacks of psn they were ddos which Xbox live also suffered from.
@LiamCroft Because Sony would never lie? They have a PR disaster on thier hands and they haven't provided any evidence. Listen I love Sony as a company but this just seems a bit too convenient.
Sony claims, not confirms.
@Akurusu Cool, you done now? Because I’m gonna wait for critic reviews on this one. If you’re not going to, then shut the f&@k up.
@Lobbo95 Outrage culture at its finest. Perfect example of that on here is that @Akurusu loser assuming the leaked cut scenes taken out of order/context = garbage game, shoving down everyone’s throat’s that doesn’t agree with him. Talk about pushing an agenda, the hate bandwagon is the only agenda I see here right now.
Well now I know the leaks I really don't want to play this game, I'm not going to refer to anything but my initial concerns from the trailers aren't even half as bad as the reality and I can see why they have now backtracked on the indefinite delay
And there you have it people. Also "Naughty Dog actually extended pay and healthcare benefits for contractors due to COVID-19" but naughty dog treat bad it's employees
Article updated.
@carlos82 the cutscenes aren’t in order and wait this is the big one are taken out of context plus the ending didn’t leak. You’re judging a game that is likely to be close to 30 hours on out of context scenes that had hours upon hours of gameplay and story developments leading up to them. I mean you do you I haven’t seen the leaks and don’t want to but ND don’t create bad stories or games so I’m still hyped and there day one for the collectors edition
@Yourmomsmuff24 looks to when you joined the site and your chosen name yeah you’re someone who should be taken seriously lmao grow up
@get2sammyb But Jason Schreier is paid by Sony to cover it all up!
@Akurusu were you actually threatening that person with leaks because that’s what it comes across like
@dark_knightmare2 I understand what you're saying about the context of the cutscenes but that's not the only information out there. As I said I'm not going to discuss any spoilers here so I can't really explain my reasons either, it's great that you're looking forward to it and I wouldn't want to put anyone off it.
This is a dumpster fire for everyone. the franchise's reputation is tarnished. Hackers ruined years of efforts trying to keep things a surprise. There's those copyright strikes from Sony over YouTube videos that just TALK about the spoilers, yet don't show any of the leaked footage. By these, they're conforming the fears and disgust of many, and only adding salt to the wound for those who already have grown to hate Sony from things like their increased focus on applying western beliefs onto censorship in Japan.
Seriously. I can't see anyone finding any good out of this...
I dont understand the drama tbh.
At worst, just wait for real playthrough or even reviews. 🙄 instead of trusting random guys claiming they know the whole game from a few scenes.
No need to commit now.
Naughty Dog censoring MEMES!!! Welcome to big brother. No wrong think allowed, starting with you Amy H.
We’ll see. Could be a way of not lying while still lying. The game’s could be very well final too. There’s not enough time to fix it either. I know it almost sounds kinda conspiracy, but they events were programmed in, they did happen. This also isn’t an official statement from Sony, just here say, who frankly, has so much to lose right now. So much. This could destroy one of their biggest games and tarnish the reputation of one of their key developers.
It’s also worth noting that Neil Druckman has been going after fans who don’t like the leaks. His attacks on fans don’t inspire confidence. Why would he even say anything if they had nothing to them? Probably because in all reality the game sucks.
@Wormold Man, that Critical Drinker YouTUbe video was pure gold!
@dark_knightmare2 I wasn’t threatening. It was a warning because you can go to any PlayStation related comment section on any site and you’ll see spoilers. There are also people spoiling the game for anyone who shows Naughty Dog or this game any kind of support.
If the leaks are from an earlier build why did they go through so much trouble to hide it all? As soon as the game was supposedly leaked they announced a release date immediately when it already was delayed indefinitely. Furthermore, they’re striking videos that talk negatively about the game without copyrighted material used, abusing the fair use system. Last, they are hiding replies in the twitter comment section. Maybe I’m overthinking or didn’t read carefully, but doesn’t it seem like this is too much for a supposed earlier build of the game?
Earlier build? Are you kidding? Did you not see the timestamps at the bottom of those clips? They ranged from Jan 2020 to April 2020. They were from the final build. This is the game that was set to launch this very month.
I could not care less who leaked the material. Does Sony and ND really think that matters? How would it matter in the least if some hackers did it as opposed to some disgruntled employee?
What matters is the content and the material which is alienating and pissing off quite a few Last of Us fans. I swore quite a while ago never to pre-order a game again after being burned several times by shoddy releases. So, I had no pre-order to cancel but I was planning on buying the game and now I have to find something better to spend my money on.
Sheesh, Death Stranding is looking better and better now. Why not give a Walking Simulator a chance over this tripe. Thank you, whoever you are, for leaking this stuff! I love you!
Bet @Akurusu is still gonna paint Naughty Dog and Neil Druckman as evil even though Jason is like, the most reliable dude in the industry. Talk about an agenda pushing jack@$$.
The amount of anger and hate that people keep throwing at the game isn't doing themselves any favours. It's a classic death of the author situation because it's clear a lot of people preconceived ideas on what the story should be and who you play as but when the game doesn't do that subverts expectations, people get angry about it and then they see things that they immediately think is pushing an agenda so they attack it mercilessly. That's where the real anger lies, not the "ND has a crunch culture so no buy" cos if you really have that stance you'd barely be able to buy any game.
At the end of the day, so many are attacking TLOU2 because their not prepared to give an inch to any form of representation so think the game is an attack on them. Unless the game straight up says "straight white males are evil" then the hate is completely unwarranted.
@AdamNovice The whole ordeal is just getting ridiculous at this point. I haven't read any of the leaks, and I don't intend to do so. I'll get the game, play it, and decide for myself.
But man, I don't know what to say anymore. In the end it's just a game people.
Maybe it's the coronavirus, and everyone being locked up inside causes so much anger. I don't know what else it could be.
@octane Maybe it's partly to do with it. But I think people have been waiting for a chance to kick Naughty Dog for sometime. It's likely a combination of several group, those that hate them because ND's apparent politics doesn't lineup with their own. The "overrated" crowd who can't understand how ND's games get so successful. Then there's the xbox and nintendo die hards who jump in because it makes their platforms look better apparently. And finally the minority who have genuine concerns and are openminded but get lost of shuffled with the horde.
@AdamNovice I wouldn't blame an xbox or Nintendo fan, nor would I label them as such. As the matter of fact, I've seen plenty of ''Sony fans'' hating on it as well. So what does it really matter?
But yeah, popular products do garner more attention, and as a result more hate. It only shows the scope of this game IMO. But it doesn't make it any less ridiculous. Same happened with Death Stranding when people kept calling it a walking simulator for months, as a cheap way to dismiss it. And I don't know about you, but I've played anything but a walking simulator.
"Crunch culture"
You know some people have never done a real hard days work in there life, especially if you believe your hard done by by a few months of optional overtime with overtime & bonuses. It's kind of mind-blowing really.
@octane I was more talking about various groups and why it's in their interest to attack the game.
And I'm with you on Death Stranding because again people judged the game before even playing it. But again people say "walking simulator" and that for some reason was a turn off. Add on top the people who don't like Hideo Kojima, particularly his fame and again you have another dumpster fire.
Sony is lying like the do with everything else. Screw Soy Sony..they ruined a perfect story for the SJWs. Moving to xbox next generation.
@Octane Yeah i honestly don't get it i saw the "leaks" i am still getting the game. As you said same happened with death stranding and it was great game. I think people just want something to talk about.
@JesWood13 I had forgotten about you & you still throw a jab. Don’t see why you would, but living inside your head for free is neat.
@BradT people like you are so insufferable. You want to hate the game fine hate it but no one else cares if you do. The game is going to sell millions, be loved by millions and most likely hit 90 plus on metacritic so just deal with it and move on.
@Odin1985x don’t let the door hit you in the butt. Oh btw grow up a little being a right wing nut job and bigot isn’t cool and isn’t something you should aspire to be.
@Jaz007 the day a ND game especially one that’s a sequel to one of the best games of all time sucks is the day I’ll quit gaming so good thing in no universe will this game suck so I can continue to partake in my favorite hobby.
@Saro they don’t have to show the scenes to get closed down. If they are talking about spoilers in detail of course Sony doesn’t want that.
@Maximums4083 he didn’t get Amy Hennig fired so do some research so you don’t have to make crap up and he also didn’t write this story alone he has Haley Gross who omg is a female.
That's pretty embarrassing if that's the actual source of the leak.
@Neolit This video by YongYea contains some additional info (no spoilers by the way!) on how it was hacked:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIAoyv_sz64
And yeah, I'm with you, TLOU didn't need a sequel. But I liked it a lot, and I did enjoy Uncharted 4 as well, so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. (besides, I have nothing else on my to buy list for the coming months!)
@dark_knightmare2 Considering Uncharted 4 was a pretty disappointing sequel that may have suffered because it built itself around a story that was good, but no more. If that design philosophy affects LoU2, it’s screwed. U3 was my favorite game for a good while too, so ND’s decline started ages ago. I’ve actually seen what the spoilers are, and it’s pretty bad. The hate seems pretty justified from most angles. I really wouldn’t get your hopes for LoU2.
@Jaz007 For me U4 was the best of the series because it was built around the story and it's characters. U3 went from set piece to set piece too much without giving the story time to breathe. And I don't see how the hate is justified yet because most can't seem to decide what it is they actually hate about it whether it be it's apparent politics, certain things that happen in the story or the dev culture. It's all very inconsistent right now.
@Jaz007 don’t have to worry about my hopes I know the game is going to be amazing because of ND pedigree. You felt uncharted 4 was disappointing that’s fine but plenty of people say it’s their favorite,it’s sold 16 million copies and got a 93 on metacritic and I see tlou part 2 doing exactly the same except it probably will sell more and maybe Hit 94 or 95 on metacritic
Sony is handling this badly. The leakers are criminals and should be delt with. But copyright striking channels that discuss the leaks is authoritarian . I find it ironic it's always the people who feel the need to push agendas and virtue signal that then punish dissent and criticism. I get it that they worked hard on this but you can't control how people think and feel, if you have a message you want to convey and your in a position to do so you have a responceability to be inclusive and teach not push. It's the difference between art and propaganda and lately so many people have chosen the latter. Then the most privileged of all make these blanketed statements that anyone the disagrees with their choices is a bad person or a biggott. The irony is the same way they feel certain marginalized communities are stereotyped, misjudged and treated like crap is exactly how they react to the the broken hearted fans that expected something they could identify with and love instead finding that the closest thing to identification has been made a stereotyped, misjudged lowley villan. Society is not perfect , there are plenty of foolish dumb and evil people out their, but very few fans cared much about Ellie's sexual preference. What people are upset about is when you pull away the identity political tropes it seems like a plot that pays no attention to the fans expectations. Some times that can be done artfully and the turn out is amazing but in the past few years Everytime we see this pattern we see a franchise we loved die to make a political point that is only taken to heart by the like minded and privileged who then pay themselves on the back for tearing people apart just a little more. I hope this game is a artfully masterpiece... But forgive my skeptisism
@AdamNovice exactly and truthfully most of the hate is from right wing morons crying about sjw’s and politics being in “muh vidyagames”
@Maximums4083 I love “concerned” people like you who aren’t fooling anybody but man keep fighting that good fight lmao.
Cool it was hackers.
Thank you hackers. Saved me $60. :]
@AdamNovice We all know that while we don’t like Devs getting treated poorly, we really aren’t gonna do much about it. We can rule that out I’d say. It’s a combination of what happens and politics. They’re for together pretty poorly here. I’d say it’s double-layered cake with some having just one layer of what happens in the story being dumb and just a bad idea for LoU. The dev stuff is really just a extra icing for anyone. Nobody isn’t gonna buy the game for that reason. I don’t think it’s hard to understand personally. I think that kinda comes from the opposite end of a lack of rationality on subject to be honest. Well, to be fair if someone is avoiding spoilers that would be easier to do. It’s all kinda abstract then.
For U4, if you ask me was just breathing time. It never really did something to make you catch your breath, though. Uncharted have great character, not great stories. U4 just happened to have a story that more directly used it’d characters than before. Epilogue aside, when was the last time someone really talked about U4’s story? When has the plot really been analyzed or talked about with it’s villain? I don’t know that happening outside of some criticisms honestly. People say Uncharted stories are so good, but they point out set pieces or characters. Not really the story itself. So nobody really acts like Uncharted has a great story from my experience.
@Maximums4083 About the copyright strikes, it's the only thing they can do unfortunately. You can't expect them to sit through hundreds of hours of podcasts to verify whether it contains spoilers or not. I mean, one podcast can easily last for hours, and so many people are talking about it. So the best thing is to nuke everything, if that makes sense. But that points more to the broken system that is YouTube than anything else. Either way, I'm sure it's right or not, but it's the only thing they can do.
Hopefully Naughty Dog addresses the Social Justice Warrior content that was previewed on these leaks. Pandering to the woke masses?
@jaz007 I've long felt that video games as a medium struggles to tell actual good stories largely due to the pacing problems that come from it's interactive elements where most of the time the story stops when gameplay takes over. But what games wonderully at is characters. A lot of people say TLOU's story is by the numbers but the characters turn it into something else entirely. And a lot of that is because games allow for so much character expression beyond what's just expressed in a cutscene. Fighting games are a great example of that.
@Octane Except it's against US law to falsely DMCA takedown a piece of content. Notice how they're only hitting the smaller channels that probably won't do anything? They know what they're doing, they know who will fight back and who won't. Only thing they can do? Breaking the law is the only thing they can do in this situation? Hmm... I don't know about that! Hahaha
YouTube copyright system is broken, but it becomes moreso when entities use the system as a means to break the law.
@AdamNovice That can be an issue, but I also think that's gone a lot better. Frankly though, I think Uncharted has it worse than a lot of games. Judging it as a "video game story" to speak, so we're only talking about peers that have similar issues to overcome, I would still argue Uncharted has weak stories. Honestly, most video games that that are thought of to have decent stories do it better than Uncharted. That's probably why Uncharted 3 is my favorite too, it focused on the cinematic set pieces, had the best puzzles in the series to act as breathers, didn't compromise character quality, and didn't built its design philosophy around it's weakest component. No climb,climb, climb, and then climb some more (too much of that just felt like fluff) automated climbing while the combat sequences are shorter than ever with set pieces just missing.
Again, nobody talks about classic moment from Uncharted 4, because simply put, they aren't really there. Everyone talks it up until it comes time to get detailed.
Also, I think RDR2 is a perfect example of character building in a way that only games can do. So yes, I fully agree with you there.
@Maximums4083 it's not authoritarian. It'd be like if you somehow got specs for Boeing's new airplane and started distributing the designs and talking about them. It is their right, as it SHOULD BE, to sanction you from speaking on the matter. That is their intellectual property. Now, if the game were released and they were copyright striking "Let's Play" personalities and game reviewers....your argument might apply.
@Neolit you misunderstood the entire thing...not even sure where you got the credentials idea from. The hacker exploited a security flaw, pure and simple. That's EXACTLY what hackers do.
@Octane Death Stranding was ****** AWFUL. The plot was meandering and meaningless (what little there was), the gameplay mechanics and loop were borderline torture, and the concept was inane.
So the copyright strikes are confirmed to be sony or naughty dog's doing or people are jumping to conclusions as always? Wouldn't be surprised if sony did't have anything to do and people will still denied the facts as in this case.
@Rossif3r No they are true..all of it.
@oldschool1987 It's not a trans character. It's a girl.
@Odin1985x See ya, you certainly won’t be missed. Maybe @Akurusu will jump ship to Xbox with you so you have a buddy, and so we don’t have to hear his load of bull anymore.
@Rossif3r difference between those leaks is we didn't have video proof lol
@Odin1985x just think online gaming was free and psplus was optional once. thats how it should have been but the fanboys defended it and claimed psn was better with psplus, what a bunch of hogwash that was. i just hope xbox remove online from the paywall nextgen and makes it free. that will make a push on sony to remove theirs.
So I've read and seen the leaks..
Have to say I'm seriously doubting whether I'll be getting this now. What a massive shame
nice lie. how is a hacker get the game anyway unless he took it from a NaughtyDog insider?
so the problem in what's going inside.
@roe Don't even bother with it. The leaks are true and from what I've seen uh yeah no sorry it's gonna be a pass for me.
@TheBuzz My ps + is almost up and I'm not renewing it either. Sony doesn't deserve my money due to the fact they never release big AAA game for free that have been out maybe like a year or two. The only games that I've downloaded for free was Bloodborne and Ratchet and Clank and after that I never download anymore free games cause it's either I have them or the lineup has been extremely embarrassing. Idk Sony's bosses are like don't care anymore. Well if don't care why should I support your business?
Boy, these comments devolved into something I expected, but hoped against.
@Areus
I was riffing on Trump's whipping boy list.
Isn't Fox news basically Trump's PPE (preferred propaganda environment)?
Dear God. Some people have serious anger issues.
@Neolit once again...no. They were required to have a special security token which was stupidly left buried in an older game, which allowed access to AWS, then they have to get their hands on a dev kit because you can't just connect any random computer or console. A security flaw can be one of a programming nature or one of a procedural nature. Either way...it is called exploiting a vulnerability. If it were as simple as someone leaving passwords lying around, leaks would have happened way more frequently and easily.
That's like having a hacker get ahold of your pre-shared key on your VPN tunnel. They still need to be able to figure out how to connect to the tunnel, even with the key in hand.
@nathanSF Used To Be Until They Turned On Him Now Fox Is Looking Out For Fox
@Areus Oh dear.
I don't care WHO did the leak. I care about WHAT the leak revealed. I HATED it the plot and I have yet to find a single person who has read/seen the leaks who LOVED the plot. Cases closed? Not even close.
@naruball Anger doesn't even come close to this.
@Akurusu you're totally right there, man. So according to some people's "logic" SWEAT SHOPS are ok because you're supposed to know in advance that it is almost slavery. But you knew beforehand, so it's ok. Brilliant geniuses we have here.
It's amazing how pro-censorship the anti-censorship side comes when they don't agree with something. It's hilarious.
@Maximums4083 you're totally right. But that would require actual writing talent.
@Nepp67 possibly. Not confirmed yet.
@nathanSF TDS is as contagious as Corona.
Go watch ANGRYJOE on YouTube. You will understand.
@ShogunRok Think about it. If you were Sony, how hard would you come down on a malicious hack that spoiled 7 years of hundreds of people's work, which adversely affected sales (presumably) and also stock price, causing millions of dollars in damages? If it was me, I'd either sue them into oblivion, or at least press criminal charges. Sony ramped up security across the board for consumers and developers alike after the PS3/PSN hackstorm, and unless you make an example out of the perps, it'd make it look like anyone could do anything to Sony without fear of retaliation.
