Update: As per a new PlayStation Blog post, Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition will also launch across Europe and in the US on 27th August. There's even a new trailer to whet your appetite which we've embedded above.
Original article: Remember Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition? Believe it or not, this game was originally supposed to launch on PlayStation 4 all the way back in January! A significant amount of time has passed since then, and it looks like Square Enix is finally ready to launch the remaster. It now has a release date in Japan of 27th August 2020, and we reckon confirmation for Europe and the US won't be too far behind.
Courtesy of Gematsu, there's also a new feature to be detailed. The Imitate system will allow you to change your appearance and voice into one of the sub-characters during a battle if you collect certain items. This mechanic joins the likes of online multiplayer, support for cross-play, newly recorded voice acting, and new character variations, equipment, and upgrade items for every race.
We will, of course, update you with the news of an official release date for Europe and the US whenever Square Enix decides to share it. We don't think it's too far away, however. This was meant to be pretty decent when it released on gamecube i think. I had the DS games, but i dont think they were meant to be a patch on this one. I'll prpbably get it as i have bought pretty much every FF game released since final fantasy 7 in 1997, including spin offs
I didn't enjoy it on the GC, it was probably a mistake to use the FF name since that creates certain expectations. Also needing 4 GBAs to do 4-player multiplayer was just taking the p*ss. That said, I think I might enjoy it more now, especially if it has online co-op.
I forgot this was coming out after the hefty delay and radio silence. I was about to play it next week on my PVM with my Gamecube, but I can wait. I have plenty of other retro games I was queuing up for it.
It's been a while since this was announced. Only Square Enix could take so long to release a remaster.

Never change, PS.
@Matroska totally agree.
Giving it the FF name led to certain expectations and this was a massive disappointment for me on the GC.
Looking forward to playing this again. Very fond memories of the original despite the GBA nonsense.
Had a friend who owned a gba, and he used to bring it round to play this with me, years ago on the gcn. Had fond memories, but with greater connectivity options and a bit more customisation, I can imagine it'll be great coming back to with a few more chums
Wow am I out of the loop I thought this game was only releasing on the switch lol.
@Averagewriter I've been on this site since the beginning, they only talk Sony. In the early years of the PS4 when a game also came out on the PS3 sometimes they wouldn't even mention that.
One hint - if it doesn't say "Playstation exclusive" in the title it probably isn't..
Physical or ill just skip it like the rest. π
@Averagewriter Why would they need too do that on Nintendolife its probably the same.
@Averagewriter While the website is Sony focused - they'll talk about Xbox much more than Switch since it gets more of the same games - the rivalry isn't played up. I had to stop visiting IGN about a decade ago b/c I couldn't stand the fighting.
If you want to know about more consoles there's always Dualshockers. I don't visit their website but I follow them on Twitter for the stuff PS and NL miss.
@Flaming_Kaiser @rjejr @Averagewriter it is a shame they donβt mention all platforms though, it would help them on Google analytics and increase traffic to the site as well as inform the reader.
Also, PushSquare, NintedoLife and the new Xbox website could all cross link to each other and help each other out WAY more since they are all part of the same company and many of us go to each website each day.
They are missing a trick.
@ArmyofOne I left so many Square Enix releases this generation because of this how hard can it be too press a few discs. For all i care add the costs of the case and bluray to the price still annoyed i did not get too play FF8.
@Kienda I own one platform so i could not care less. If i want my Nintendo info i go look up it up on another site. Google >Nintendo>Game or Info i want.
@Flaming_Kaiser Yes, for you personally.
My point is still valid. As someone who runs a successful website I can tell you that SEO matters and I think theyβd drive more traffic with more keywords being dropped into articles and greater integration between the sites.
@Kienda "They are missing a trick."
I've been commenting on PS and NL since basically the beginning if not before and I always thought it weird how separate they were, but I don't work here so they do what they do. Seems to be working for them. As fanboi as some gamers can be it might actually be best this way, cuts down on the chaos in the comments, don't want any of "them" showing up at "our" meetings.
I mean sure, I wish we lived in a world w/o trolls, but trolls are numerous, loud and obnoxious. They're why we can't have nice things.
@ArmyofOne @Flaming_Kaiser So you guys will both stop buying new games once they all become digital only?
That is going to happen eventually, it is inevitable.
@ArmyofOne Same here TBH, but I keep on buying more and more games. Mostly thanks to keeping track of bargain bin sales online.
@KidBoruto I almost never buy digital so who knows maybe i will go retro then but as long as there is a physical option its ok. If you look at Limited Run Games and the other platforms doing it there still is a big audience who wants physical only.
@ArmyofOne Same here the only things i get are expansions if i love the game i would double dip 100 % for some games i love of they come patched as a complete package. Just bought Parasite Eve for the PS1 in almost mint condition. Now to find a US Playstation any idea if a PS3 runs PS1 games.
@Flaming_Kaiser Most PS3s can play PS1 Discs fine..for PS2 Discs though it needs to be one of the early launch models.
@KidBoruto But i do need a US PS4 for US games i think?
@Flaming_Kaiser You mean PS3 right? PS4s can't play PS1 or PS2 Discs.
@KidBoruto Yeah i meant PS3 sorry. π Yeah why am i asking i can try it when i get my Parasite Eve game from the US its in near mint. π Maybe fire up Legend of Dragoon too.
@Flaming_Kaiser I did some further digging and can confirm, the PS1 Discs need to be from the same region as the PS3 you own.
So if you want to play US PS1 Discs, you will need a US PS3, no legal way around that.
@KidBoruto With the PS1 i used some disc and some kind of clip too keep the disc runnin too play American games i never had a illegal game. I find it somewhat annoying that they didnt just remove the region lock. π
Now i need to get a US PS3 i need some adapter too change the voltage i guess. π€¬
@Flaming_Kaiser I've never needed to import games from other countries so can't comment on that.
However I have bought a few digital PS2 games from Australia PSN due to being unavailable on the US store.
