Update: After a back-and-forth between various sources, Epic Games has told Kotaku editor Stephen Totilo that the PlayStation 3 build of Gears of War 3 embedded above is real. However, it was never planned for release. "This footage is a byproduct of Epic's internal Unreal Engine 3 testing process, which utilised both Gears and Unreal Tournament, and was never part of any actual product work for PS3."
So there you have it: this really is Gears of War 3 running on a PS3 devkit. Unfortunately, it was never intended to see the light of day.
Update: It didn't take long, but Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski has commented on this so-called PlayStation 3 build of the series' third game, claiming that he's "99 per cent sure this is fake". He added: "Y'all need to ask [Epic Games boss] Tim Sweeney. It may have been a test for the engine or something, but I doubt it."
The debate rumbles on, however. John Linneman of Digital Foundry has since countered Cliffy's comments, claiming that he knows "firsthand now [...] this is definitely real". Our guess is that Gears of War 3 was probably never planned for release on PS3, but Epic Games had some fun experimenting anyway.
Original Story: Well, then. Gears of War is well known as one of Microsoft’s tentpole franchises, but the Redmond firm didn’t outright own the franchise until 2014, when it acquired the intellectual property from Epic Games. Up until that point, there had always been rumours that the series may one day appear on Sony’s systems, and apparently the Unreal Engine maker started work on a port for the PlayStation 3.
Embedded above is a full playthrough of Gears of War 3, supposedly running on a PS3 development kit. It’s buggy and unfinished – you’ll even still see Xbox 360 button prompts and references to Xbox Live – but it dates back to May 19th, 2011, which is roughly six months prior to the threequel’s original release on Microsoft’s system.
“This is an Epic-made build of Gears of War 3 for PS3,” explains leaker Proto in the YouTube video’s description. “As far as I know I'm the only person with a working build of this particular data as well. I don't know why it exists; I don’t know why it was made. All I can do is speculate.” He goes on to explain some of the bugs and issues present in this build.
“Fully horizontal and vertical aiming movement is quite poor, so you must include slight offsets to your aiming, which in turn makes actually shooting things really difficult,” he said. Despite that, this appears to be a genuine PS3 build of Gears of War 3, which is just unreal in so many ways. What next? A Nintendo Wii version of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune?

If it weren't for how terrible UE3 games in general ran on PS3, this might've seen the light of day! It would've been shocking to see Gears go multi-platform, kinda like how shocking it was to see Insomniac develop Xbox games!
Well, there was talk of the Gears franchise coming to PlayStation at the start of the gen when Epic broke away from Microsoft.
Once Microsoft learned that they were quick to buy the franchise to prevent one of the only IP's they had going elsewhere.
Gears is a quintessential Xbox game, and I don't mean that in a flattering way.
@keihtg Gears was multiplatform before this instance. Gears of War was on both X360 and PC, and while 2, 3, and Judgment remained exclusive for the rest of the 360's life, the series yet again went multiplatform when the X1 came out and forever will be multiplatform. Now in 2011 it would have been huge but today it wouldn't be a surprise given how Spencer has taken the Xbox brand 3rd party.
People often confuse "Microsoft owned IP" with "Exclusive", including Phil Spencer and Aaron Greenberg. A game cannot be exclusive if it appears on multiple platforms, owner of said platforms being factually irrelevant. Super Mario Bros. is a Nintendo owned IP, a Nintendo exclusive IP, but it hasn't been an exclusive game since SNES came out. Breath of the Wild, Gears 5, Halo Infinite, Death Stranding, etc are not exclusives. There is a fine line with PSNow, as those titles are made available through a Sony client for streaming and not an actual release SKU, that'd still be considered exclusive, but anything else simply isn't.
@GoblinKing86 The only times I've played Gears are on PC, haha, including the original over a decade ago!
I guess when I say "exclusive" I really mean "console exclusive" or "brand exclusive," like you're saying. I think of Gears as irrevocably an Xbox-associated product, and having it appear on a PlayStation would be just as shocking as when Crash Bandicoot got kicked to the curb, only to resurface on Xbox and Wii too!
@eumenes I've tried to like it soooo many times, but yeah...Gears isn't that great of a series, IMHO. I think the production values, world and character design are top-notch (minus the Ugg boots everyone wears, lol), but the gameplay hasn't evolved much since the original. That means clunky movement, bullet sponge enemies and guns lacking impact (feeling and sounding like a sputtering hose or party-popper). I don't think PS players are missing out on a whole lot...
@keihtg I wholeheartedly agree on all points.
@keihtg I feel almost the same except for 5, I have played them all and they feel pretty much all the same from 1-4 just better graphics every time but 5 although still feels big and bulky to move your character still, the weapons finally have a sense of weight and impact while shooting them hard to fully describe but the action in 5 is just a lot better and finally up to modern day standards and fun only played 3-4 hours so don’t know if it lasts though.
Gears 1 and 2 were fantastic games but after that it just felt like rinse and repeat. Some of the best co-op ive played was with a buddy on gears 1 and 2. It pains me to say it as i detest MS with a passion.
@j_whitfield8 I don't believe there is any proof no. They could just be using a PlayStation controller on a modified Xbox which seems like a more likely scenario because why would epic waste the money in porting something that could never be released? It would have been expensive to port as well due to the differences in architecture despite the same basic CPU core. The GPU was vastly different and so was the memory setup so... I'm skeptical.
I'd need this confirmed by a reliable 3rd party before I believed it.
@keihtg the same can be said about uncharted 1-4 and God of war until the latest one and surely more exclusives. That's just off the top of my head.
It's not the gameplay that makes gears better than other cover shooters, it's the refinement of that gameplay and control mixed with the physics, ai, aesthetics, sound design..
Gears 5 is still gears of war but it feels fresh because it's more like a horror game than previous titles and that change makes a big difference along with all the gameplay tweaks they made.
@GoblinKing86 considering Microsoft owns Xbox and windows then anything that releases is an exclusive to their platform.
They don't care which you buy it on because what they really want is people to sign up for gamepass or buy movies and games through their store.
They don't make money on consoles, not much anyways. They are a loss leader.
They do make tons of money on accessories and services. The Xbox one controller is the #1 selling controller in the world by a significant margin because besides Xbox owners buying them they are also the most used controller on PC. Hell I know people who only own a PS4 that use the xim4 or xim apex so they can use the Xbox controller on a Sony console because it's a better controller. It has better analog sticks and triggers and it's more comfortable.
This is actually really awesome. It's reminding me of how people are currently trying to run HZD and Spiderman on Xbox one through emulation
Pretty awesome, one of my favorite franchises!
@Envy that must be quite the complicated project!
@Envy well HZD is coming to pc soooo wouldnt need to do this and might make it easier
Blimey, what next, Sonic the Hedgehog on a Nintendo console!??
You had me at Uncharted on Wii
Fake news get your tinfoil hats on people, turns out Gears of War on PS3 was causing Covid-19 along with those bloody 5G masts.
Maybe we should start port begging
@j_whitfield8 - Here's a clip of the game being booted and closed on the XMB. Looks legit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcqEZaJ1kHc&feature=youtu.be
I've tried Gears on the 360 and for me was a generic game, awful character style (may I say art direction?) and so on. Never ever felt sorry for not being able to play Gears.
@MattSilverado I also thought the art style was awful. Hyper-jock military dudes with zero personality.. yawn.
@keihtg Nailed it. Great summation.
99%??? what happened with that 1% percent, he just thought maybe just maybe...
its like those advertisements for killing bacteria and viruses. well, 98 to 99% but dont sue us, we cannot claim 100%
If you want a real good cover based third person shooter then just follow the Shepard.
@get2sammyb I really want an Uncharted game on Wii now lol... Maybe a spin off like golden abyss (but a new story) would be awesome!
99% sure cliffy b sucks.
I never been a big fan of any xbox or playstation ex games. Only ones have keep me awake longer than 5 mins has been spiderman, sunset overdrive. Hellsblade and fable. Very few ex games are worth it. Gear sucks uncharted well it's a game that well...
Dont see the whole point or the hype around most of them. They come out people then cry wasnt as good as they thought, or they lie and try defend the game cause it's there ex game for the fanboy tears.
If gears did come to playstation that be cool less xbox air heads thinking it's the best game that's ever came out. Plus the playstation fanboys wouldnt even insult it without giving it a chance.
I say screw ex games just bring everything to every system, let gamers be gamers and play what they want on what they want.
@ssppiikkeeyy An interesting take!
@get2sammyb yeah, definitely interesting if you're out of touch with reality.
People who say that all games should be available on all platforms should invest all of their money in one company and see how wonderful idea it is when they lose all of their money. But since it's someone else's money, everyone's an expert.
I'm surprised how bad it is running, however most if not all 3rd party games did seem to run better on the 360, even though ps3 was overall the more powerful console. I have a feeling that next gen the 3rd party games will run similar on both ps5 and series x, maybe even run better on ps5 with ease of development and the fact that unreal engine 5 has been optimised around the ps5, Epic did say they have been working with Sony for a few years on it too.
Is this really that big a deal? Devs often test games out on other platforms, for benchmarking and also to see how the code functions in different environments.
Back in last gen, Xbox 360 and PS3 couldn't have been further away in terms of internal infrastructure. Sony's PS3 was notoriously difficult to code for in comparison to Xbox 360s sleek PC based coding software.
Having worked with coders in a dev studio, I can attest to all kinds of extracurricular activities these guys would get up to on the different consoles, sometimes to solve problems on other platforms, and sometimes just for kudos you'd get from your colleagues for managing to get something to work.
@grant4evergamer https://youtu.be/JalWT8oNxhk
Bethesda must have down this with Fallout 3 GOTY edition because it played obsoletely rubbish on on PS3 but I don't recall it been that bad on 360 not to my knowledge. In fact any game from on PS3 was awful
@PretendWorking what's sad is how the comments aren't properly threaded. I didn't know it was "sad" to reply to 3? People..
Owell lol, guess I'm just sad.
\(°o°)/
@PretendWorking ahh I see... Now 20 comments in total across multi articles.
Now it's irrelevant but I'm a ps4 owner, also own an Xbox one x and a high end PC.
I'm sorry if my opinions that differ from yours are causing you such... Discomfort.
I mean looking into all my comments? That's what's sad. Actually what's sad is nothing I've ever said is untrue.
Remember, opposing views are ok. As for this being a PlayStation site... Well call Google and ask them why it's in my Google now feed.
Hey good news though, I pre-ordered the deluxe edition of Ghosts of Tsushima (or however it's spelled) like 30 min ago so that should make your fanboy feel nice and warm.
You're welcome!
@d0x360 I never played Gears 5 aside from the multiplayer beta...I really wanna play that game as a whole, but need to beat 4 first, lol (since I enjoy the story). I'd say you're right about the refinement, in that Gears requires the most deliberate cover-to-cover movement of all third-person shooters in order to proceed. However, the rest of the genre just "feels" so different to play that Gears is really it's own sub-genre of third-person-shooters, and I guess I tend to like the Uncharted variety better (jumping, easier movement, standard shooter controls, etc). Not a bad thing either way, just a preference, I guess!
@keihtg understandable, everyone is allowed their preference and Gears is overall a slower paced game about positioning and Uncharted is more about the mixing of stealth and direct action at the right moments. I could never get into the uncharted series but I did buy them all and tried. I don't think it was a gameplay issue I just couldn't get into the story.
I think Gears 4 was my least favorite overall but I still liked it. I think it was the robots that turned me off. Gears 5 is excellent though and absolutely stunning as well. Even the x1x version is one of the best looking released games and the PC version maxed out at 4k60+... Wow.
Interesting how Cliffy B seems to have been out of the loop on this then.
@d0x360 Lol, the beginning of 4 with those DeeBee robots in the settlement seemed to take forever. I only got as far as the "At The Doorstep" level before giving up (solo, hardest difficulty) and starting over, dialing it the difficulty way down to normal so I can just enjoy the story. Still need to finish! I heard the story payoff in Gears 5 makes it worth it.
@PretendWorking ignore him mate attention is what wollys crave.
@ssppiikkeeyy that is the quickest way to bankrupt a company🤦♀️
@PCPS4XB I can only tell you my opinion from playing it directly from my Xbox one x on my tv using my controller and gears 5 definitely feels a lot better than the rest, watching this YouTube video shows me only that the animations look the same to a bit off on gears 5 , but it still feels better in the hand compared to the rest more responsive and can feel the bullets of each weapon definitely a lot better this video overall does not do anything to me except some of the more smaller details that I don’t personally look at in a game.
99% sure LawBreakers will be a huge hit
Regarding the shooting mechanics, I think it was the best 3D 3rd person shooter game. In 2D, nothing can surpass Contra hard corps, imo.
