Today's big reveal is actually the unveiling of Unreal Engine 5 from Epic Games. The above video gives us our first real, in-depth look at what the PlayStation 5 is capable of, as the Unreal Engine 5 tech demo is running in real-time on Sony's next-generation console.
The demo is called 'Lumen in the Land of Nanite', and needless to say, it's very impressive. Again, the whole thing is running in real-time on PS5 -- the footage is in-game, being played by someone with a controller, and it's not pre-rendered.
We've gathered some official screenshots below:
How do you think this looks? Is next-gen shaping up to be what you expected? Pop your eyeballs back into your skull in the comments section below.

Looks mind boggling at times. Definitely could imagine a next-gen Uncharted looking a lot like this.
wtf, that looks insane! I know it's a tech demo but what I saw drew me in completely, I hope this becomes a full game.
Days Gone’s Freakers about to get 1000% more terrifying.
seeing this i can't see how a few more TF will make games look much better on xbox.
sure for the very trained eyes perhaps but even than,can you realy say that the ps5 is missing out after seeing this?
i know it's just a tech demo but still.
@Fight_Teza_Fight Yeah I thought about Days Gone 2 while I was watching this. Obviously the original was on Unreal Engine and looked pretty crazy at times, so the sequel is going to be INSANE.
@Fight_Teza_Fight Lets hope they add 2 wheeled vehicles in the engine this time
This one PS5 tech demo just destroyed everything Microsoft showed off the other day
There’s no way that last sequence can be done on Xbox series X it could never load that many assets at that speed. I need to see this in 4K it looked amazing in HD on my tv
@jdv95 I posted on the other comments, but that SSD must be coming into play for this? 500 of those high detail statues in 1 room can't be in ram?
@Zombie9ers It's a wrap.
Wow Sony didn't announce anything, and yet showed more next-gen gameplay than Microsoft!
@Fuzzymonkeyfunk The last sequence got me thinking about Spider-Man. Imagine swinging through New York with assets like this. Holy moly!
Its a tech demo, but its a fully playable tech demo playing on a PS5 dev kit.....we have just witnessed the future.....and it looks glorious!
@phil_j
They are in ram but loaded so fast that ram can be available for immediate need rather than needing to load a long time in advance because it could be needed.
Looked incredible wow!
@get2sammyb The flashback sections with Sarah were stunning. No doubt it’ll be drop dead gorgeous😁
@get2sammyb that sequence was Next Gen!
@jdv95 watch the tech talk. It’s still going on.
@jdv95 i would hope BUT everytime they was asked about it running on Series X the dodged the question
now that could be because they might have a advertising partnership with Sony or it could mean that the Series X can't do everything with this engine the PS5 can
perhaps in the coming months we will see it running on Series X but the fact that they kept dodging the question is a little concerning
WOW!... that looks fantastic! The lighting in the scenes are just amazing.
@JJ2 Thanks. That's a good explanation.
"There. are. so. many. triangles! This environment is millions of triangles, these statues in this room are 16 billion triangles alone!"
Seriously though, it is very pretty, but I somehow doubt the games will look that great out of the gate. Hope I am wrong.
Looks great, it's a pity most indy devs are unable to produce stuff like this mostly because of lack of money or time.
This gen would be amazing if indys were able to do games that looked this good as they mostly come up with original ideas.
@get2sammyb Yes! Or maybe even Ratchet & Clank jetpacking around massive planets
@MS7000 It ran realtime on a PS5 devkit, what more do you need?
Very nice looking, Unreal Engine is used by plenty devs so this is pretty much a big step forward for gaming right here.
Very impressive. Imagine the Spider-Man sequel running on this!
@FullbringIchigo Perhaps the rumoured Series S complicates things for Xbox?
It looks incredible, but I've become so accustomed to just how far we can push technology that I just feel like "of course it looks that good", which in itself is just awesome to think that we live in an age where this is normal now.
I don't think anything will ever top the jump from PS1 to PS2 or PS2 to PS3. Or even 2D to 3D.
@FullbringIchigo You’re correct. The Xbox game play release was sorely disappointing. This is running on the dev kit with video capture connected to it according to the tech talk.
Wow, colour me impressed. Bring on PS5!
Looks amazing.soy first party studios will look amazing on the ps5.word up son
@MS7000 It's a restricted demo but it's not "fake" gameplay or anything. You can play this with a controller. Obviously there's no AI or anything, but it gives us a rough idea of what to expect.
@Grumblevolcano well they was talking about scaling options and how it's being built so that it can run on anything from mobile phones to the highest end P.C's, even the current gen systems so i'm sure that it will run fine on Series X but you're right the fact that MS has 2 different systems might complicate the issue
Horror games will be... horrifying!
Waiting for a new Forbidden Siren and a new Fatal Frame since too many years.
Wow. Fantastic!
Certainly lays a big one on what we saw of Assassins Creed Valhalla the other day.
In the words of Darth Vader....impressive....very impressive! First genuine bit of next-gen I feel like I've seen! Lets hope its not wasted on a new Fortnite variant!
Now we’re talking! I also got the feeling even on my iPad that the sound would be amazing with Headphones/a decent speaker set up. I really can’t wait. TLOU2, GOT, and others To keep us busy in the meantime too..!
@eumenes That's not what I am disputing. I am saying that I doubt every developer is gonna spend as much time polishing their games to look as pretty as that tech demo. Not to mention, the tech demo is clearly not the whole game (if it were, then cool, I'm interested), so it stands to reason that you can make a very pretty scene when there are limits to where you can go. The demo was showing a character walking along a linear path. That big shot of everything in the distance is a great set piece, as well as the cliffs on the sides with the homes built into the cliffs, but we can;t see them, so it is difficult to judge if the engine will look that great for full-blown games. The other example I can think of the top of my head is the Zelda tech demo for the Wii U; very pretty, but I don't think there was a single game on the Wii U which looked that detailed.
@get2sammyb Pretty much what I just said above. I know that the demo can be interacted with but at the same time, it is still through a controlled environment (this video) unless there is something extra that I haven't seen yet. As I said in my original comment, it looks very pretty (especially in 4K on my tv), but I want to see some actual games looking that pretty first.
I can't be the only one who thinks its mad we've seen more about the XSX than PS5 but we've seen PS5 gameplay footage first
It looks bloody gorgeous! This looks very much next gen, more hype from this than most of the next gen news this far
@phil_j I imagine they have the statue in RAM once and just reference it for the duplicates. Developers have been doing that for years (hence why in old GTAs you always saw more models of the car you were driving).
Still bloody impressive though
Insane graphics, but the gameplay hasn't moved an inch since 2007 (Uncharted 1), lol. I'm more interested in more complex A.I. and interaction (i.e. things don't just look pretty, you can smash them or they react with real physics).
Now to see how 3rd party devs utilize this new engine. Im just here imagining how a future final fantasy looks like with this
Mann this demo is a mix between uncharted, tomb raider and horizon zero dawn..wow, imagine what can rocksteady do with the next batman game I know they use unreal for their games
@Redman35 not really it just seems Sony are more interested in showing the games we will be playing while MS are more interested in showing the actual system
but given that as gamers we want to see games more than what a system looks like i think this PS5 tech demo has got me more interested than everything MS has showed so far, i expect MS to follow up in the coning weeks
Looks good, and now I’m interested in this Lumen Land of Nanite game.
Is it just me or does this crap all over the last inside Xbox ?
@Arugula Yeah, I thought the hair looked plastic-y and the water looked a tad weird. Great tech demo though.
@Hobbesyall yep because they actually showed a game running on the system not a trailer
That's amazing. Just watched it in 4k (or what YouTube claim is 4k!) and it's really impressive. Only negative was the water animation didn't look great, lighting is incredible though.
Maybe this is part of Sony's strategy: show not say?
Was expecting something more than that but ok.
I kind of skimmed through, since I got tired of hearing the narrator talk about triangles, but it is quite pretty. Maybe I'm just not seeing it, but it doesn't really look massively more detailed to me than something like Horizon Zero Dawn on the PS4. I'm sure the difference in games on the actual console will be more noticeable than in a Youtube video, though. Especially with a 4K HDR-enabled set.
@andreoni79 Fatal Frame has been co-owned by Nintendo for a decade or so, and they don't appear to be interested in pushing the series in the West (particularly in NA; Fatal Frame IV stayed in Japan, Fatal Frame 2 on the Wii never came to NA at all, and we only received a full-price digital version of Fatal Frame V on the Wii U), so I wouldn't get my hopes up for another good entry in the series any time soon.
Watched in 4k and wow. That's what Im talking about
I know Crash doesn't go for hyper realism in the art department, but just imagine the environments in the new game!
Do you think that another company’s software will ever replace Unreal’s and Unity’s? Or are those two so dominant in the industry that they won’t be knocked off their perch at the top?
Very impressive. The dust blowing in the wind on those rock cliffs when she's climbing... just, wow!
"With the speed of the PlayStation 5, no longer will you have to sit and wait through a hidden loading screen"
1 minute into tech demo..
For real though this looks absolutely superb.
It looks pretty, no doubt. I just wish this was an actual game Epic was developing instead of a tech demo. I really like the aesthetic of this world, and that gliding section was cool. If Sony had shown this as a first-party launch title, I think I'd be saying this one of my most anticipated games of the fall season.
As for Unreal 5, I can't wait to see the next Kingdom Hearts and FF7 Remake games use this bad boy.
@roe Got mad FF7 Remake flashbacks when she started squeezing through the gap, lol.
Horizon Zero Dawn 2 i was blown away on my PS4 vanilla by the game cant wait too see what will be going on.
@andreoni79 There's strong rumours that Sony's making a new Silent Hill for PS5, so we should hopefully find out soon.
That definitely looks like a step up from the current generation.
@RBMango remember Detroit: Become Human started out as a tech demo - then became a full game after all of the positive feedback it received - so I wouldn't be surprised if this follows suit.
Just from the screenshots that looks amazing. The lighting is just superb. I really think the SSD being better for view draw-distance will be much better and more important for graphics than the extra terraflops. View-draw distance being better is the thing I want the most from better graphics and I've felt that way strongly back to when I was playing Second Son when it came out and just being in awe if its graphics.
@Zombie9ers @RBMango To be fair. There is little actual game here. Other than the fact that it looks really good. But when those next gen systems are out, all the game will hopefully look this good. And I don't see how this will stand out as something special with that in mind. It's just a character doing some simple Uncharted stuff. If other games look this good, then I wonder if this will be ''fun'' playing at all.
superb audio as well..it gave me goosebumps..
I can't wait for next gen!!
I know Sony will deliver with their first party but imagine a new Resistance game!!
Odd I thought you only did like 2-3 seconds of footage with mostly cinematics. This is a weird approach. 🤔
@roe @Ralizah
Did people always hate squeezing this much? I haven't heard of people knocking it until Cerny told them it was cool.
But like you said, this was impressive. Some people are disappointed since "it's just an engine, and not a real game", but it was a big announcement. People keep saying that the jump to next-gen won't be as big as the jump from PS3 to PS4, and they're probably right...but it's nice to see there will definitely be a difference.
Now that's a next gen demo, that looks incredible and the lumen system was the star of the show making an incredible difference to how realistic the scene looks. If games look anything like this then I'll be very excited
Loved this tech Demo. The games are going to look great that's for sure.
It looks really good, specially the micropolygons on the statues. And the lumens will save the expensive Giga Rays from GI to other tasks, like reflections.
But it's UE, so i guess it will looks the same on XSX.
@roe I was thinking the same thing but it was showcasing the sound effects which on my Dolby Atmos sounded fantastic
I don't know what I just saw or what was being said, but I want one.
Didn’t realise PS5 had such high triangle-flop count!
I want this game!! LOL
For clarity, this is running at 1440p using Temporal Upscaling to 4k and 30fps. Not that I am criticising or complaining at all...
Wow. That is amazing
Rarely do I say this word about any tech. But Epics demo on PS5 was phenomenal. Encore. Hollywood assets in a game! Doesn't that mean twice as much talent going into games than last gen. Worlds will be mind boggling next gen. I was gonna hold of buying a PS5 first day... But this demo has shown me next gen has finally arrived. I'm starting to save and salivate as I watch the demo again!
Jaw Dropping. Simply outstanding greatness comes to people who wait.
And i started watching the first half in 720 as well and it still blew my mind.
The demo looked amazing… I honestly can’t wait to see what Sony’s owned studios can achieve with the PS5 in the long run after seeing this… especially studios like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Guerrilla Games.
Ok, now this seems much more exciting! I was quite curious to see what all this next gen talk would actually look like. I'm pretty happy.
@get2sammyb I really hope in a new Silent Hill, but I'm still depressed if I think how Sony wasted the creepy and wonderful idea of sightjacking...
I'm still impressed by the graphics of games like
"Uncharted 4: A Thief's End"
"God of War"
"Horizon Zero Dawn"
"The Order: 1886"
"Detroit: Become Human"
Safe to say next gen is going to blow me away.
@Garrison. Cool profile picture.garrison is the best in battle chasers.that game is amazing.ps5 need a battle chasers 2.word up son
hair and water movement look synthetic still, otherwise a nice tech demo
@jdv95 not making a difference today the Xbox One X has more TF than the PS4 Pro.
the video looks stunning.
I love some good lighting in games and it looks spectacular in this tech demo.
And yet for all their talk of fancy animations like the placement of her hands on the door, all I could think was: "You've actually just caught up with what Naughty Dog did in Uncharted 3 on PS3."
@Ron22 It doesn't bother me more than any other slow, repetitive task modern games use to avoid loading screens. They've always been annoying.
Forced walking is the worst, honestly. I'd rather squeeze through a hundred gaps than have a game arbitrarily change the movement speed of my character like that.
@Grimwood This isn't a Sony trailer. 🤔
But to my knowledge, there's never yet been a game which looks as good as the tech demos.
Tomb Raider please.
@Grumblevolcano not likely as they were asked about series x not Xbox in general.
@David187 there’s more to it than Teraflops, Sweeney said that without ps5’s insane I/O this demo wouldn’t have been possible.
Absolutely blown away by this!Really excited to see what the Ps5 can do for a new Tomb Raider,Uncharted and many more...(like A Plagues Tale 2)
There's no chance actual games will look like this. I aint fooled.
@MarcG420 Unless there were to be games playable on Series X but not Series S, wouldn't Series S be a bottleneck for next gen Xbox game development in general?
Still one my concerns for PS5, is whether or not we will get a choice between 1080p and 60FPS or 4K and 30FPS.
Considering the main selling point of next gen is loading times and general performance, i really hope developers prioritize performance.
I don't need to worry about first party games, as they rarely dissapoint.
@DominatorV93 As @BAMozzy says this is 1440p using Temporal Upscaling to 4k and 30fps. Given the results I would say they had valid artistic reasons.
@Ryall I'm not questioning that.
I'm just questioning the entire next gen in general and what kind of performance we can expect.
Impressed, they could have just shown it off on a PC. PS5 with super fast I/O seems more than capable. Not out until 2021 so we might not see games using it for a while. Pair that with the new Tempest engine audio, can't wait.
@DominatorV93 I think performance is going to depend on the game. Take something simple like horizon turbo chase and hitting 4K 120fps shouldn’t be a problem. Add in enemy AI, vegetation and ray traced reflections to Lumen in the Land of Nanite and you’re probably all the way back down to 720p 30 frames per second. I also hope that when the is a trade-off between resolution and frame rate they choose frame rate. It’s perfectly possible that they will choose to use the power in different ways that cripples both.
Next gen look like the same Sony movi.... games we been playing since the first Uncharted. Just prettier.
So triangles huh? It looks impressive but lots of games already look pretty. Telling a good story and/or being fun to play is more important. But then again I don't buy consoles until the first price drop so I don't suppose this is meant to impress me.
You have to remember though that this is using different methods to create this look and some of those are a LOT more resource heavy than current methods. The fact that all assets are very high quality - even in the distance - means that they take up more resources and processing than low quality assets that get swapped out as you get closer to them. That statue for example could have a flat 2D version in current gen, then a low polygon version, a higher polygon version etc with textures being used to create the illusion of 'detail'. That makes rendering a frame much easier for lower spec hardware. The lighting too - especially bounce lighting is expensive to do and often its 'baked' in rather than real time.
I have no doubt that an 'approximation' of this could have been done - rocks etc that are more texture with tessellation to create a more 3D effect instead of using actual geometry, lower polygon count objects with textures to add detail and backed in shadows and lighting to create the illusion of depth.
When the character 'glides' through the city at the end, there would be pop in as the more distant objects get swapped out for higher polygon count objects with higher quality textures as you got closer and on closer inspection, certain things wouldn't look right because the lighting/shadows etc would not be reacting in real time. That could probably run at a reconstructed 4k on a PS4 Pro but that's not the point.
I had this Discussion on Pure Xbox, that thinking using the same Nanite/Lumen aspect for Gears 6 would allow a 4k/60 with ray traced reflections for example. The fact that Gears 5 runs on Series X at 4k and well over 60fps does not mean that Gears 6, using these would run at 4k/60. I have no doubt the PS5 could run Gears 5 at 4k/60 yet runs this demo at 1440/30...
Point is, this is a NEW way of creating the world and using assets and a real time lighting solution that appears to be relatively resource heavy to achieve a certain quality of image that has not been possible before. Some aspect may well look 'good enough' on current gen and fake the look well enough but that also means a LOT more work for devs. They have to create textures - low and higher quality ones, lower quality assets etc and set the point at which they 'swap' in/out. Have static lighting and can't do bounce lighting at all in real time - so much that is 'faked' to create something that can be rendered at the necessary frame rate to be a playable game.
This can cut a lot of that work out, eliminate pop in and create something more realistic and not immersion breaking. I think its impressive...
@Ryall Bit unlogical using that game as an example, since next gen consoles would have no problems running that game with the mentioned features at well over 1080p and 60FPS...
I mean this tech demo itself ran dynamic 4K and 30FPS alone and we can very likely expect even better looking games than showcased here.
But, again that is not the main topic here. My problem is the lack of clarity from SONY and MS on what the targeted perfomance trully is.
@BAMozzy Not saying it is not impressive, but the trade off is not really worth it (if this would be the representative for the entire next gen).
I'd rather have unlocked frame-rate with some pop-in.
@Grumblevolcano potentially. Hard to say without knowing what the specs were really.
Can I preorder now!?!
@DominatorV93 Personally I would rather have a locked 30fps than an unstable higher frame rate. 30fps games have dominated the Game of the Year awards and the frame rate has not 'negatively' impacted on my enjoyment. Of course if I could pick between a locked 60 or locked 30, the majority of the time I would go for 60fps - all things being equal - but often I pick the high quality visual and stable 30 over a lower quality visual, unlocked and unstable frame rate because I prefer a consistent game-play - a frame rate that is jumping between 40 and 60 is not consistent at all - not in feel or in image presentation!
input lag is tied to the game engine to - if its constantly rendering a frame at 30fps, the input lag and feel is consistent - its not if the game is constantly changing frame rates. Unless you have a display that offers VRR, you will end up with judder (a frame held on an extra cycle because the next frame missed the TV's refresh rate so creates judder) or Screen Tear (some part of the image held on an extra cycle and some of the next image displayed). VRR will help with the image presentation but you still get an inconsistent feel to the control - especially if the frame rate varies by more than a couple of frames...
@DominatorV93 I don’t think the change in generations is going to have any impact on what Sony and Microsoft view as a minimum acceptable frame rate for games on their platforms.
The trade-off might not be worth it but you’ve got to admit that the tecnical demo had a wow factor that the announcement that dirt would have a 120 frames per second mode in the Microsoft presentation didn’t.
@Ralizah yeah, without the blue arrows 🤣
I was hoping to see a more detailed facial animation tho but on the whole it looks incredible. Reminded me of tomb raider... Until she flew 🤣
Graphics is good, but moves of that girl are sooo artificial, that it pulled my eyes to it and immediately I remembered Tomb Raider 1 on my old PC. I know it is tech demo concentrated on graphics, just those movings looks so old school. If I remember movement in Detroit B. H. it is uncompareable step back (... leap back)
But that graphics looks good...
I like the part where she had to shimmy through a thin opening between two spaces....
... In an unrelated note I’m happy we got rid of hidden loading screens.
And to think, that Graphics usually get better into the console generation through optimisation. So PS5 could after a couple of years look even better than this.
It’s a tech demo non of the games will look anything like this . These tech demos have been done for years on the unreal engine and not one game comes close to the demos .
So much for clean underwear, that gameplay demo running on PS5 looks amazing!
Absolutely Amazing!
Yeah it was alright.
I'm getting old at 45 been with playstation since ps1 , what I would have liked to have seen is a comparable demo using ps4 tech showing the difference with the highlights of the ps5 and without stopping and zooming in 200 percent.
I might be mistaken and I'm not a expert in any stretch but could something similar have been done on the ps4? Chartered 4 looked good to my old eyes, but this looked better.
I'm sure the upcoming ps5 games are going to really impress , really looking forward to them!
Cheers
@FullbringIchigo Where does it say that? I’m having trouble finding it.
Now we know why Microsoft needs to undercut Sony on the price of their next gen console! Imagine what Sony could do with their in house propriety engine.
@DominatorV93 Microsoft did said that it is up to the dev how their game should run. From the way thing are going, dynamic resolution should be standard for next gen. I am hoping 60 fps would be a standard too.
@Zombie9ers It's running on the new Unreal Engine, which is also coming to all other consoles and PC. So imagine this, but better, on the XBOX Series X.
@sanderev Not according to Sweeney himself.
https://i.imgur.com/10pHsUG.jpg
It’s the SSD of the PS5 and its custom i/o solution that allows this type of image quality on screen. An 18% increase in GPU will not make up for this for the Series X.
What Sweeney specifically said was that UE5 can be scaled to run on anything from high-end hardware to mobile devices.
@shyhh In other words, they wash their hands from their previous ''60FPS standard'' statements.
@Jaz007 are you asking about the scaling options?
If so they talked about it in the interview after the tech demo, if you give it a watch they should explain it all
@FullbringIchigo MS just seem bent on being the most powerful & SX being the go to for 3rd party which I really don't understand personally. Really looking forward to seeing some of the first party stuff but I'm not holding my breath that it'll make me want an Xbox again right now.
@Redman35 i think XBOX said they was doing a load of first party game reveals in July
Personally there are only a few 1st party XB franchises i'm interested in so i'm hoping that some of their new studios show off some upcoming games that are actually exclusive because as it stands with a XB1 and a P.C i really don't need a Series X to plsy any upcoming XBOX games
Now the real question is whether this demo becomes a full-length AAA game challenging Uncharted series. I hope so!
This demo is amazing. I think a lot of people whine about sub 4k 30fps but they dont realise it's a playable demo in real time meant to showcase graphics possible in gameplay and not just pre rendered cutscene like the Hellblade 2 trailer.
There was just no point in pushing 60fps.
That looked insanely awesome. We know that PS5 devs will push the boundaries of this...
Just imagine how the next God of War will look like. I'm drooling
If you ask me Sony is a lot more honest about the graphics quality here. This was being played by someone in realtime , thats gameplay.
2 Tflops does not mean a lot all by itself. However , the entire architecture does. On top of that 2 Tflops would never be able to make a lift from this to the non-gameplay of the senua demo from MS so i expect future xbox x buyers will be complaining about downgrades on day of release on on that platform.
I wonder what next-gen upgrades will be added to engines such as Decima, RE etc as this was really amazing. Even just from a technical perspective. Both nex-gen platforms are going to offer fantastic possibilities to developers.
Wait until we see some games. Heads gonna roll... 🥳
@JJ2 Pursuit of native 4K is a waste of resources anyway. Digital Foundry said that it was almost impossible to count the pixels in this instance.
@ArmyofOne The difference is less than that between the pro and the one X so i wouldnt worry. Its not like you will have 60FPS one one console and 30fps on the other
The machines are almost the same give or take a few things, and i would imagine there being much difference onscreen, it will come down to the capability of the developer rather than console
@phil_j they've specified that the SSD will allow for unloading many graphical assets that aren't plausible on today's HDD! This is what's going to separate the PS5 from all others, I just read an article that even PC users will have to wait for the SSD tech thats in the PS5 to be able to catch up which is saying a lot IMO 👌
@JonnyMack agreed 💯 percent, it's going to come down to what developers will be able to do on each console. The series X has the 'technically superior' GPU (although 1.72TF won't make a massive difference) while the PS5 has the technically superior SSD which is literally twice as fast as the series X SSD (I do imagine twice the speed making a small impact) each console has tiny things that make one better than the other but when it's ALL laid out, it'll be what developers can do with those small differences in their games. I believe first party studios on each console will make some amazing stuff that takes full advantage of each consoles capable of 👍
@Dominatso the fact that this is a fully playable demo running in real-time on the PS5 and not some pre-rendered footage (what we saw from Microsoft) I agree that Sony is showing what's feasible on the PlayStation 5. , the demo is fully playable, so this is not some pre-rendered footage meant to trick players. Games can feasibly look like this on next-generation systems.
@Ryall I agree 💯 percent, I'd take full 4K gaming at a smooth & stable 60fps rather than 1080P at 120fps
@JJ2 , the demo is fully playable, so this is not some pre-rendered footage meant to trick players. Games can feasibly look like this on next-generation systems. Sony has gone out of their way to showcase UNREAL engine 5 running in real-time on PlayStation 5 which is huge considering the pre-rendered footage we saw from Microsoft!
@cali_kush70
That is exactly why they showed the character making these huge and fast leaps. To show how fast their SSD controller is, but also the reason why the internal drive is less then 1TB. one little problem will be that the m.2 ssd expansion slot will not be usable for games that are made to use the internal SSD only. a minor thing, maybe.
@cali_kush70
"the fact that this is a fully playable demo running in real-time on the PS5 and not some pre-rendered footage (what we saw from Microsoft) I agree that Sony is showing what's feasible on the PlayStation 5. , the demo is fully playable, so this is not some pre-rendered footage meant to trick players. Exactly
@Dominatso I suggest you rewatch the developer conference talk. It was explicitly stated that if you put a fast enough m.2 ssd into the expansion slot you would be able to run PS5 games off it. The expectation is that you would need one that runs at or near 7 Gb/s. We can be fairly certain that they will be available at a speed and in a form factor that fits into the PS5 bay by the end of next year.
@get2sammyb
For what it's worth I agree and I think most complaints are just fussed about the numbers and wouldn't see a difference.
I was hesitating to reply because I dont want waste your time.
However I'm curious as to what you d think of Windows Central take?:
'It'll be interesting to see how the Xbox Series Xhandles Unreal Engine 5, but we're expecting better results than 1440p since Microsoft's console has a 2-3 teraflops advantage over the PS5. '
I find it arrogant and constantly misleading the readers with their pretence that PS5 GPU is 9tf
@playstation1995 Thanks brotha, been a fan of Battlechasers and Joe Mad since the comics came out back in the day. Hopefully one day we get more Battlechasers games and comics.
i am quite baffled by all the comments on this page. yes, the demo looks amazing and i would be hyped if this was an accurate representation of what is to come. BUT IT IS NOT! we will get glimses of such beauty, sure, but we will not see a full fledged game with such levels of fidelity and detail simply because it won't be possible on ps5. you can create a beautiful demo such as this in a small, controlled environment, with no AI, destructable environments or other mechanics to worry about, but the moment you add in those elements, the stress on the hardware would increase and you would need to make concessions to the visuals. also, you can kiss goodbye 4k/60fps if attempting to put out visuals of that calibur.
people need to lower expectations or they are in for grave disappointment. all you need to do is look at the UE4 reveal to know that we didn't get near the potential of what that demo showcased. if anything, developers barely scratched the surface of UE4 and were unable to optimize it well for consoles (look no further than jedi fallen order and the low resolution textures in ff7 remake). this is merely common sense, but it seems like some people have never seen a tech demo before and are taking it far too literally. BUT, i am open to being proven wrong. PROVE ME WRONG SONY!
@JJ2 The impressive thing about this demo is the asset detail which is allowed by the speed of the SSD. The Xbox’s SSD is about half the speed and therefore the triangles are likely to be larger. That means that it will be less taxing on the GPU of the Xbox combined with the more powerful GPU is likely to lead to a higher rendering resolution for the game world. A high resolution with the triangle spread across around four pixels is something I would consider less impressive. But I can certainly see how it can be spun as a high resolution and therefore a better result.
@Ryall
I mean the demo served its purpose. I dont even see the point, from the dev perspective, of wasting energy in porting it to xbox except for becoming a tool for fuelling console wars.
Second WC keeps saying ps5 GPU is 9tf 🙃
Im not even interested in the comparison but the length some press go to further their agenda is interesting
I believe the demo would be about the same but you making an interesting point. I watched Alex from DF implying the res would drop to sub 1080p to push 60fps. That's sounds a bit dumb whereas there are other ways than playing with res.
@Porco Also it's a short demo. Comparing it to a 40+ hour game isn't really going to cut it..
@DeepSpace5D I'm not really convinced without image of this running on a XBOX. Since both CPU and GPU are better on the XBOX I think it will count. Just adding a faster SSD won't improve computation. This video is made to show off the capabilities of the PS5, but it's not to compare those to the XBOX.

We already surpassed that unreal engine 4 demo. Its not impressive any more.
@sanderev
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying the demo couldn’t run on other hardware. Sweeney said UE5 is scalable to whatever capabilities the device it’s running on has.
Epic likely chose the PS5 as the first impression for UE5 because they felt its capabilities could most impressively showcase the new engine to the general public. More specifically, it’s the uncompressed Hollywood-level 8k assets that were being streamed in as the camera turns, which Sweeney specifically said required the best-in-class SSD and i/o.
“There are tens of billions of triangles in that scene and we couldn't simply have them all in memory at once and what we end up needing to do is streaming in triangles as the camera moves around the environment and the I/O capabilities of the PS5 are what allow us to achieve that level of realism.”
Also, traversal speeds/transitions and loading are likely areas where the architecture of the Series X would have to make compromises for that demo. Let’s say for example that transition at the end where she’s flying through the air. If it requires the raw speed of 5.5 GB/s to stream assets and avoid pop-in, then concessions would have to be made with the Series X 2.4GB/s speed for the same demo.
The Series X does have advantages of course, and that same demo could probably run at ~18% higher resolution than the 1440p of the PS5, and maybe even have additional bells and whistles like ray tracing on top of the global illumination shown. But it certainly appears that Sweeney and Epic feel the custom SSD and i/o throughput is the bigger generational leap.
For the record, I would like to see the same demo attempted on the Series X for comparison’s sake as well.
@danta55 i was referring to this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dO2rM-l-vdQ
also, keep in mind, we have yet to reach the point where we have actual gameplay that rivals certain aspects of this footage. i'm not referring to cut scenes rended in-engine. we have come close to this but not quite and that is from 2013. do you truly believe the ue5 demo is representative of the average game next gen? i think people have their expectations set way too high now and are going to be disappointed when games don't live up to that ridiculously high standard.
I hope Lumen in the Land of Nanite is becoming a reality and no longer a demo. I got a feel!
@Porco oh i see. My bad. Was it running on ps4? Anyway doesn't matter. Even if it was running on pc or ps4. It looked more cgi. Am not impressed even if it was realtime. It doesn't looked natural like last of 2, god of war etc. More plastic like. Explosions is good though. Anyway you will see in a month for sure. Naughty says in a month. Says better than the uncharted 4, cut scenes model. Horizon 2 says to set benchmark in graphics. Rumour the character model in terms of polygon its all horizon combine together. I think you will be amaze and be saying how. How its better than the unreal engine 5. Anyway am just a ps fan. I already understand the road to ps5 video by mark cenry. Especially how ssd work a month ago. Its not just for loading. Its does not have super power or process graphic. But It make gpu ultra efficient by feeding the gpu more data. Like by a miles better. Because it feed the gpu with data what in front of you per frame. Stated by mark sony himself. Using 9gb/s to 22gb/s (if well compress) in the frames. Ps5 ssd speed=ddr3 speed. In pc you use the whole ram 16gb to fill with assets and textures for the whole stage or scene or area or level and gpu processing the whole ram. On screen or off screen, the pc gpu is processing it. Ps5 is processing what on screen only. Pc=procesing the whole area or world vs ps5=processing frame. Whole area vs frame. Efficient. Its not difficult to hard understand why so many polygon or assets. All the gpu power is using in the frame and not the whole level like pc. Engine has to support ssd now. Its built for hdd now. Sony and unreal change that. Ssd is the game changer. Lumen light is new though. Quixel texture and asset is new to.
@Ryall
Hmmm if that is the case then i misunderstood that. I myself think to remember that they said that you would need to use the internal SSD for the games that make explicit use of the controller.
I was definitely impressed, looking forward to PS5 games even more now.
@JJ2 I see that ALL the time now! All the tech media sites say xsx has superiority to the PS5 because of the 12TFLOPS compared to the 9TFLOPS on PS5?! It's absolutely ridiculous, the PS5 has theoretical peak GPU performance of 10.28TFLOPS (nothing to sneeze at) but even mark Cerny specifically specified that when you combine the SSD with it's special scrubbers along with it's raw speed (that's literally twice that of XSX) comparing the 12 TFLOPS the 10.28 TFLOPS is pointless as it's not indicative of the overall performance of the PS5. Even before the amazing unreal demo, many 3rd party devs have raved about how phenomenal the PS5 is & that Sony has created a console that's been performance optimized to create the BEST games of next generation. I have faith in Sony, they've ALWAYS created consoles that deliver some of the BEST gaming experiences ever created. Happy gaming my friend ✌️
@cali_kush70
Yes I know. Unless calling Cerny a liar or an idiot, PS5 GPU is 10.28 TF as a base reference. That 9.2TF number is completely made up based on now inaccurate frequencies.
I think a lot of people need to rethink now. It's not just about TFlops.
It's not even about resolution anymore. Yes things evolve. I think DF cant even figure out the resolution unless they are told. I'm glad that the details on screen become more important than just the number of pixels.
