How much will PS5 cost? It's a burning question that still remains unanswered by Sony, and it seems the company isn't quite ready to talk numbers just yet.
As GamesIndustry points out in a discussion with PlayStation boss Jim Ryan, a possible recession could leave many fans in an unfortunate position. So, what's the word on PS5's price given the current situation?
"I think the best way that we can address this is by providing the best possible value proposition that we can," Ryan says. "I don't necessarily mean lowest price. Value is a combination of many things."
It's an interesting quote, even if we don't get a price tag. Ryan is emphasising the value PS5 will present, rather than shooting for a low initial cost. What does that value mean for PS5? "In our area it means games, it means number of games, depth of games, breadth of games, quality of games, price of games... all of these things and how they avail themselves of the feature set of the platform," he elaborates.
We're no closer to a price, then, but it sounds as though PlayStation is pushing for the next-gen console to be worth your hard earned cash.

Hmmm...ok...
Sony can not afford to charge so much that it gives the new generation to Microsoft. Color me somewhat concerned at this point. But I, like all of us, hope for the best.
@Svark prices will be roughly the same.
just don't expect it be as cheap as 400 dollars.
that's just unrealistic. besides sony will already be selling the console at a loss just like the ps4. so they can't go to low either since then it could be damaging them.
As long as Sony brings the games, they can sell $50 higher than Xbox and get away with it.
with that SSD its going to be 500 euros
I guess if the price will be out of the players' league, at least the new console will be able to play RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDGE RACEEEEEEEEERRRRR.
I've been meaning to make that joke ever since I became a news-sites regular.
Price doesnt matter to me as long as they bring alot of badass games and at a hefty pace. Honestly if you cant afford between a 400 to 600 dollar price range you probably need to put your priorities elsewhere besides gaming. Because in comparison to building a gaming PC it's cheap.
It means 450 - 500 Price tag incoming.
I wouldn't be surpised if its 500 but I reckon they will try to keep it as near as 450ish if they can
@Ken_Kaniff your comment is gross. Lots of people are unemployed at the minute cos of a certain world event, and the ones that aren't, perhaps their wages dont offer enough and they have to save, but im glad you are made of money and you're alright Jack.
I've got plenty of games to play so I'm thinking of saving and getting both at launch, looking forward to next week to see what's in store
@jdv95 Very much doubt Sony are selling PS4 for a loss. I doubt they even were when it released...
@Dodoo they did sell each unit at a loss. obviously made up by the millions units sold each year.
More expensive than Xbox confirmed.
Day one purchase for me regardless of price but I don't want to price people out of continuing the success the PS4 has built. As others have said it will be sold at a loss initially anyway just hope there is only one model and not a slimmed downed/lite version etc.
@jdv95 actually they apparently made 18$ of each console right from the very start (wouldve increased as part costs decreased over time).
@Mostik they’ll release a slim slightly revised model at some point... they always do.
@East76landS Yeah, I do believe it is going to be more expensive than XBox, but IMHO Sony has to be very careful here or they could lose the next generation war. People just don't have the expendable income they used to have, in spite of wanting to get in on the PS5. Just because Sony won the last generation, that does not lead to a victory lap for them. Microsoft is being very cagey here with their next generation plans. Xbox offering free upgrade on late generation games to newest Xbox, game pass, etc. I'm just saying that they should charge a decent price and even if slightly more than Xbox, the games will out. BUT, if Sony comes at it from a position of hubris, then I think they could lose this time around. I'm a died in the wool Sony fan (even bought the PS3 at launch for $600) but, Microsoft is coming out swinging.
This means absolutely nothing to be fair. Obviously he's gonna say it's good value. Whether it actually is or not is not for him to decide.
At this point it'll be starting with $500, it has to be at least $400-$450.
@MarcG420 True enough mate which I don't mind at all just want a fully spec'd up version to start with, then release it to the masses
I've expected $500 from the beginning so I planned accordingly. Highly doubt it will be too far off that either way so not too concerned with price
@gmxs Thanks man I appreciate it. I'm not made of money. I have an okay job and work in IT and just know how to manage the money I make right. That way when it comes to purchases I want im not stressing over whether I can buy something and still pay my bills. All I was saying is the system is gonna cost in that range and if you complain about the price either...
1.) Like you said your gonna have to save or...
2.) If that's not an option than your priorities money wise shouldn't be on games and need to be focused elsewhere career or money management wise.
There was nothing nasty intended by my comment it was just facts.
I'm fully expecting to pay around €500.00 for PS5. I have no problem with this given the value I'll be getting.
I can see MS getting the XBOX in there at € 450.00 - €500.00. I'm betting Sony will announce their price first, and MS will announce lower as a rule.
But it's all speculation. Who the feck knows what's going to happen?
I'll be interested if they do a monthly payment plan for it. Microsoft has done well turning their hardware line to this subscription strategy and I expect them to continue it. I think pricing the PS5 at 19.99-24.99 for 24 months could alleviate the high price point.
I am gonna go with 500 euros.
That's what I think anyway
£450-500 is my prediction.
@doctommaso nope. Fantasy land.
'We do believe in generations, and whether it's the DualSense controller, whether it's the 3D audio, whether it's the multiple ways that the SSD can be used... we are thinking that it is time to give the PlayStation community something new, something different, that can really only be enjoyed on PS5."
My favourite quote and exactly what I wanted to hear.
Edit
Bring on the 'anticonsumers' brigade haha
£350 sold at a loss for massive uptake numbers.
I keep thinking it will be 500 usd MSRP. that means like 600 usd in my country.
That's my limit, I'm not paying more.
If is more expensive than that, then i will go for a new PC GPU, a XSX or just wait for a cheaper future Slim version.
500$ is the sweet price.its bound to happen.word up son
"In our area it means games, it means number of games, depth of games, breadth of games, quality of games, price of games..."
Too bad there's no mention of accessibility of games because that, again, will be a kind of make-or-break point for me in PS5's regard. Just like it has been with other gaming hardware for years now. But we'll all know in due time.
Said £479 since rumours have been floating around. I'm still going for that.
The units are said to cost something like £425-450 to produce, if they can ~£30 per console, that's still not a loss, and they are 100% banking on the psn cash cow anyway, along with subscriptions to psnow/+ so they can probably be willing to go a little low on the console side.
@gmxs That's his point. He's saying if that much money is too much money then you obviously shouldn't spend what little hard earned cash you have on a frivolous thing like a console.
Ok my bet is £399 and if I win I get a PS5 from PushSquare.
@Dodoo if I remember correctly PS4 was profitable from the very beginning. I remember reading that they were making about 15 USD a console from the very beginning so I would imagine it is much more now.
Im cool with a 450$ Or 500$ Price tag for the PS5 Any thing over that might be a deal breaker for me though.
@Ken_Kaniff that's how I see it. If you cannot afford a console, there should be bigger issues you should take care of first. If you can't justify the price right now, that is a different case all together, and I understand if you need to wait.
@NomNom Thank you
@JJ2 That is exactly it. Ryan even said “We believe that when you go to all the trouble of creating a next-gen console, that it should include features and benefits that the previous generation does not include. And that, in our view, people should make games that can make the most of those features.” This is why I personaly prefer that developers take full advantage of the new technology instead of worrying about cross-generation support. But hey, that´s just my two cents on the matter. Cheers, stay safe and happy gaming to us all.
Oh boy that 599 is getting reaaaaally likely x)
If this thing is a dollar above $500, it’s going to impact year one sales drastically.
@MarcG420 That's true, but this gen was a bit of an exception for Sony. They had to make up for all of the lost profits during the PS3 era.
@Orpheus79V pretty sure the ps3 was profitable for them...
Found this that says the ps3 started being profitable as of 2010, which was 3 years before the PS4 was released..
https://www.pcworld.com/article/196214/article.html
@BleedingDreamer yeah that sounds about right and they must be making a healthy amount per console at present seeing as parts prices must have reduced quite a bit over the years 👍
@MarcG420 Yeah, but they lost all of their PS2 profits in the first half of the life cycle.
@Jarobusa
1. PlayStation 2 — 155 million units sold
2. PlayStation 4 — 108.9 million units sold
3. PlayStation 1 — 102.5 million units sold
...
10. Xbox One — 46.9 million units sold
This is my grounded in reality face.
Another big advantage for Sony is that Xbox Series X's first year or two of games will be playable on the Xbox One; that does not scream must-buy in any way.
@DonJorginho i agree. I’m currently saving on this premise. I’m expecting to lay out around £500-£525 on a bundle (ie 1 game + 2 controllers). Console +1 controller £450-£465ish.
@michaelf same here mate. I'll have around 700-800 by September so luckily there's some available to order off Amazon or ShopTo!
@DonJorginho I’ll see if I can get one from a bricks n mortar shop (ooo the novelty!) but only if there’s a decent bundle. I’ve bought all my machines from real shops since PS3 (so that, Vita, PS4 then Pro) and I think I’ve just been lucky tbh. I’m not paying over the odds at Game if I can get a decent bundle from Amazon etc
@michaelf what shops do you normally use mate?
Retail-wise, the main consoles came from Game (I didn’t buy any of them day one); HMV had a deal on the Vita. I’ll use Play-Asia, ShopTo and Amazon for physical games, but I’ve got a large digital backlog. I’ve had the odd game from a CEX in Crossgates near me in Leeds, as it’s had some unusual titles there.
I hope that means the console is high quality. Unlike my $600 PS3 that died on me less than 6 years after purchasing it.
Shut up and take my money!
@jdv95 PS4 never sold at a loss, even at launch.
If XboxX plays the whole Xbox library, or even "just" most of it. And PS5 only supports limited PS4 titles - then this idea of the best possible value is simply a lie.
