We’ve had a few hours to solidify our thoughts on the PlayStation 5’s hardware design, and we’re going to need a little longer. This is the boldest, strangest console that Sony has ever cooked up, but it’s certainly memorable, isn’t it? Remember, you’ll be able to purchase the next-gen system with or without a 4K Blu-ray drive – whichever you prefer. And yes, you can put the device on its side.
Take a look at these high-res images and make up your own mind:
The console is part of a wider product line, which includes the DualSense controller, a new PlayStation camera, and the Pulse 3D Wireless headset. Here’s what the entire range looks like:
Thoughts, then? Bold and beautiful? Ugly and unsightly? Somewhere in between? Let us know in our poll, and be sure to air your opinion in the comments section below.

Hi there gamers. I gotta be honest. I´m starting to like it more the more i look at it. Especially on the side, since that´s how it will be on my end. It is a bold design to say the least. Good on them, for trying something new and futuristic. Cheers and happy gaming to everyone out there
Not great for cooling seeing everything is being overclocked to hell and back to keep up with the competition. I'm not feeling hopeful this is going to be great performance wise. I also know that I'll be getting the plain black version of the ps5, Hope it's offered day one! This one looks like a WiFi router
@RaZieLDaNtE Yeah, it's grown on me more now the initial shock has warn off.
Pretty sleek, although I kind of wish they offered a black console as well. Will definitely be getting the version WITH the disc drive. Any word on the console supporting Dolby Vision?
Does the look matter? All about performance
To me it looks like a limited edition lasagne or cake. Or some vegan burger.
I'm having the same reaction to it that I did for the Dualsense. I was a little put off at first, but its already growing on me. That's the thing, I dont think anyone was expecting Sony to do something this different, and of course you'll need time to sit with it. People accept change over time, not all at once.
@Enuo Bad design. Fans must admit it. XSEX design is way better than this one. However, nobody buy a console for its design. Give us good games. Unfortunately, tonight non of the games impressed me. On the other hand, Xbox also annonced no games. So, I am still undecided. It is a meh next gen to me in general. Also, the graphic leap is not a huge one.
@TooBarFoo No plain black is planned but future limited editions may be coloured.
I just wouldn't plan on seeing that for a while.
I think it's fantastic. If i close my eyes, I can vividly recall the PSONE, PS2 and PS3 but the PS4 barely resonates. The PS5 is clearly going to be divisive and I think it will be a lot more impressive in the flesh, but I feel Sony have done a phenomenal job with the design.
Still think it's ugly, but I'm guessing it will look OK in black, and at least it has a design instead of being a giant shapeless block.
My actual concern is that disc drive placement. First I was worried it was quite low being placed on the bottom half of a horizontal console, which in itself will feel awkward.
Then I realised. Does this drive read discs regardless of orientation?. If the drive is on the bottom half, then the disc label will be facing in to the body of the system right? Come Christmas there's going to a pot of vertical console gamers attempting to place their discs in the console with the label facing away from the body, as every other console has ever been designed.
I honestly like it, I like the boldness of it. The original PS4 was sleek but safe. The PS4 Pro was ugly, to be totally frank. But this has got an edge to it and I can appreciate that, even if it won't be to everyone's taste.
@TooBarFoo why do you say that? It looks like it has been designed to dissipate heat from the top and the sides.
@Axlroselm Sounds like a 'you' problem.
I'm conflicted, I don't hate the design, I actually think it's quite neat. However, I don't really want a console to stand out or have flashy blue lights on it. I really just want it to sit subtly under my TV. It's the games I'm going to be looking at, not the console. I get it, I know it's a bit boring to have the same old black box design, but I really hope they do offer an all black version as others have said.
@Axlroselm The graphical jump from generation to generation is only going to get smaller from here on!
Personally, I reeeally wanna see more interactivity this generation. It's time. Instead of marginally better graphics, I'd rather have all the trees in Horizon 2 be able to get knocked down, or have the ground deform and break apart when creatures run away so you can track them. I wanna see complex A.I. that makes a real simulation of an ecosystem, with creatures getting hungry, killing, and resting in a truly dynamic way.
If there's going to be a choice of colours for the PS5, I'd go for black.
Really wish Sony made a rectangular box with no distracting gamer lights. Doesn't matter though cause they got the games, with Deathloop and Oddworld looking amazing!
I prefer the test kit design but this doesn't turn me off from buying the thing. It looks best on its side which I prefer to have my consoles anyway
@Axlroselm I generally prefer xbox, and the XSX is just not even a design.
Though I'm with you with not being impressed all round with the games or consoles of either. I'm skipping this console launch (a first for me) and waiting for the mid-cycle refreshes.
I think I'll love it more in black. This will stick out like a sore thumb under my TV in white.
@hi_drnick PS5 has a fixed 350W power budget and will use that to overclock the GPU. But the hotter a chip get the less efficient it becomes and overclocking really ups the temp. To hold the stated 9.2 TF for more than a second or 2 it would need top cooling solution and mass air movement. Air movement in the design shown would be fine for low clocked hardware but not clocking a GPU at 2.2 Ghz. Take a look at what is needed to overclock modern PCs. Physics does not change and there is not enough room to push the amount of air needed through that case to run a GPU at 2.2 Ghz constantly. I work in processor design used mainly in the mobile space and believe me, we wish we could bend physics every day but we are always working around a thermal envelope. So is Sony
@TooBarFoo fair points and you know much better than I do but I think we need to see a technical breakdown before concluding it will run as hot as you fear. I guess that might be why Sony is predominantly showing it in it's vertical orientation so people won't think to cram it into their entertainment set-ups.
It grew on me as well. I gotta say that I love the colors, the controller and accessories though.
Speaking of accessories, what is the point of the remote?
What made the PS4 series’ design language great was that form followed function. The cut through the center isn’t just for looks; it’s to hold the disc slot and USB ports. The wedge angle may look cool, but it makes it easier to access the disc and ports when the console is sitting horizontally. There’s nothing there that doesn’t need to be there.
The PS5, however, is the exact opposite. Curved sides? Just for looks. Wider at one end than at the other? Just for looks. Ungainly superimposition of an asymmetrical curve onto an otherwise symmetrical design? Oh, that part actually does serve a purpose, for the disc slot that appears to have been an afterthought.
That’s the difference here, that the functional parts feel like an afterthought rather than an integral part of the design.
I like it. When vertical, it does integrate the V for 5 into the design and that's slick.
@AJDarkstar Vapour tubes are good at moving heat from the die head to the heat exchanger, but once there you need air to remove the heat or the heat sink reaches capacity. The X box one X runs cool, it does not push its silicon very hard. The PS5 should be just as efficient at cooling as the one X but it is relying heavily, at least in its marketing, as making up for a much smaller die by overclocking so it needed to move much, much more air . I don't see that as technically possible
The overall look is clean and ultra modern. I'm really happy about the design.
I think it's beautiful. In love with the headphones too. I am puzzled by no mic on the headphone. I suppose Sony has faith the dual sense mic will work well enough. Probably not in a noisy environment though.
@get2sammyb Any idea about the measures of the console? It looks quite tall in vertical position.
@RenanKJ Not sure yet, hopefully we'll get more info tomorrow.
I don't like how it looks and dislike the two - tone of black and white. Black with silver or grey maybe, but i prefer all black in matte or satin finish. Also white easily show dirt.
I never have figured out the reason for the upright standing position for a playstation. However up or down the PS5 still looks ugly. It looks like it warped from way over heating or that parts from 2 or more designs were used and when put together it all doesn't fit together well. Like the car in the Johnny Cash song One Piece At A Time.
it doesn't look like a shoe box, bonus points
I'm still deciding how much I like it but the more get used to it the more it's unique look appeals to me. Plus it has an hourglass figure which just makes me want to rub it.
@Enuo Of course.
@Salt_AU Indeed. My point was that graphical leap is so small that it is no longer a huge justifying factor for getting a console, specially at launch.
Boo white! Design's fine though. Glad it can go horizontal. I know it's just psychological, but I just don't trust a vertical optical drive.
I love it, it's like really high-end wifi router. I hope it doesn't wobble when I put it sideway since my tv cabinet isn't high enough for ps5.
@RaZieLDaNtE. It looks cool.lots of good game announced.which one was your favorite playa.word up son
I love it,super sleek and stylish.just not on its side.Prefer it stood upright though.
Everything about the PS5 is looking fantastic,Console,Controller,games..really excited for the new Generation to blow out socks off.
just...give...us...a...black....matt....option. if this was focused tested, there is no way white would beat out black. i am willing to wait this one out for a year if that means i can get a matt black sku. still, i have to give sony props for trying something new... it's just not for me and does not agree with my gaming shelf which has 3 black monoliths next to eachother!
Looooove it!!!
I want new consoles to look like they are sent from the future to answer all my dreams, & this is better than I could've possibly hoped!
@RevDrGalactus i think the slight curve of the outer shell could actually help with heat dissipation — as it would create a wind tunnel effect for the heat to rise upwards. could be wrong, but it looks to me that could be a small detail that does serve a function.
I like it. Something different
It's like a futuristic building. It's 20th century modern art (probably mostly to the minimalism movement). I love it! I also adore this kind of "art" philosophy. Steve Jobs had this philosophy and look where he brought Apple.
Thank goodness it's not, yet another, black rectangle. Like almost every electronic device over the last decade has been a black rectangle!
@TooBarFoo
Wow. Could you do a worse job hiding your agenda? 😂
And get you facts straight. It's 10,28 tflops. On top of that, it appears obvious that you have no idea what to make of the "'boost clock" situation. Nothing is overclocked. Look into AMD smart shift. You will learn something.
To be honest, I like the shape of it (although it did take some getting used to), but the wife will have my guts for garters when I stick this on our black TV bench, under our black TV that's hanging on a dark blue wall.
I do hope there will be a black version at launch.
I really like it. I said on here the DualSense would grow on people and I think this design is the same. I seem to be in the minority because my set up is gloss white so this will sit in nicely. I like the look of the accessories too, I can see myself getting upsold at launch in game!

Horizontal, can’t add just the image
As soon as I saw it I liked it. It will stand proud in my room.
If Sony’s intent is to be bold and try new things (which started with the DualSense) then I’m with them all the way. I also kinda like it.
Xbox series X reveal - internet = I hate it! It's just a boring black box!
P5 reveal - internet = I hate it! All I want is a black box!
I really like Microsoft’s hardware design in general, but I’m glad Sony has gone a little more unconventional this time around - at least they don’t look the same! Yes it’s a bit Alienware-esque but after the awful PS4 Pro design I’m glad to see something a bit different. I’m a fan of the two tone colour scheme.
This design is a bit too flashy for me, but I guess it'll look better in black. What I am interested in is the performance, cooling and noise levels. I'm sick and tired of my 2nd gen PS4 PRO. If PS5 is priced right I just might get it soon after release just to improve on the noise.
By the way how did Sony keep this under wraps? Seriously. The iPhone get’s super accurate leaks every year (mostly aided by patents) and I have not seen one leak resembling this design. Awesome. Nobody saw the DualSense design coming either.
The design feels like a cross between xbox 360 and new alienware range. That aside I want a console to blend into its surroundings. This does not do that. There is a reason we do not get white TV's.
As much as I want to buy it release day, I'm not going to for once in a new generation, I feel if you buy it when first released you will get shafted a bit because you know they will release a upgraded version ala ps4 Pro. But it will be difficult not to buy it, satan help me be smart
Why is so many here at Push Square commentfield so upset with this design ? I don't get it. Me, my family and the few friends that I have had a chance to ask about it so far just love the design ? Even in white.
My entire homecinema/music setup is in black. But this will stand proudly beside our TV as a sort of "platinum trophy", a proud symbol of the PS brand bringing even more games and joy to our simple home.
I'm even going to buy those headphones, I don't like white ones, but those are great looking together with the PS5 (and I'm 100% sure they will perfectly match PSVR 2.0 in a year or so !!)
Edit: I don't mean to force anyone to think like me, just curious about all the hate it gets here.
I can't stop thinking about how every time we see a mad "leak" of concept art for a new console, we all say, "Yeah, but it's not going to look like that because that's stupid... it's just going to be a black box" only Sony actually did it.
It's quite bold, I like it but don't have anywhere I could put it vertically (other than on top of the subwoofer, but that doesn't seem like a great idea!), So I'll have to go with it horizontal which isn't quite as imposing.
Interesting that they didn't show the back, so we don't know what ports we're getting. I'm hoping that the USB C and A ports on the front panel can accept a cable adaptor to drive a PSVR without needing the breakout box. Could do with a couple of USBs on the back so I can have a permanent external hard drive attached for my PS4 games.
The all-digital option is interesting. Most of my PS4 library is digital and I've got a UHD BD player, so I might be tempted if the price difference makes sense.
I think it looks amazing, the controller sucks still though, gonna need me one of those remotes too.
@RenanKJ @get2sammyb I did a quick calculation from the disc slot and the console on the stand (using pixel counts as percentage) , height came in at 38cm, (PS4 is 28cm).
Shouldn't be that far off unless they have special PS5 smaller discs
@RevDrGalactus I guess until we see the teardown and cooling solution, it's hard to tell. There may be some good reasons. Also I think they are trying to make it look smaller than it is, which they appear to have achieved?
I'm not sure if I completely like it but it is bold and different. At the end of the day though once you're playing a great game who cares what it looks like?!
I like it, I think it stands out instead of just being a box we hide under the TV but I appreciate some people want that. To be honest I agree with others I am more interested in what it is capable of than what it looks like but really happy Sony took the plunge to not just make another box. I really do wish there was a black version though, I thought with the reveal event preview pics being a black controller meant we would get the option of black!
@get2sammyb I plan to buy current gen Sony headphones. Will they be compatible with next gen?
Any info on that?
@Zeke68 It's unmistakably trying to be a piece of art, and I guess art, abstract sculpture especially, will always be in the eye of the beholder.
Personally, it's just as unfathomable to me how so many people could like this design as the opposite is for you, and I guess that's just the way it is.
It's kind of unfortunate that people that don't care for these looks are being forced to bring into their homes an aggressively gaudy piece of plastic if they want to play PS5 games, though, compared to, say, somebody who didn't like the PS4 design (if such a thing is possible) only having to put up with a box that was understatedly minimalist at worst.
@Fath
I totally respect your opinion.
But I don't think it is that hideous imho.
Best console design since the Gamecube, I love it. Give me something different to a standard black box any day
I absolutely love the design! It looks really modern and (obviously) very different to current consoles, which I appreciate a lot!
Like the title of the background music during that PS5 reveal outro... logic of a dream.
Xbox be all like
PlayStation be all like
@TooBarFoo It looks like it's weird looking specifically to enhance cooling. What about this makes it look like it will run hot?
Looks awesome and aesthetically is pleasing. Great design
It honestly looks fan-made
It looks like a mock up someone would make for a next gen console for a 240p YouTube video in 2007 lol
@playstation1995 Hi there friend. My personal favourites were Horizon 2 and Demons Souls remake. I still can´t belive how good those games look. Can´t wait to play them both. Cheers and have a good one 👍
Looks fantastic to me. Modern and shapely. I love the blue lighting. I found nearly all pervious consoles to look dull and boring, but not this. Day one for me (I I can get one).
@RaZieLDaNtE. Ratchet and clank for me.its one of my favorite franchise ever.that game look amazing.kena looks really dope also.both games looks like a pixar cartoon movie..deathloop looks cool.dishonored also is one of my favorite franchise ever.good show.what did you think about the ps5 console.it definitely looks better than xbox.word up son
Oh dear...first reaction: i dont like it...first reaction to xbox sx was wow. I like to place my controller on top of my ps4...dont know why...where am i gonna put it now...it also looks rather big...and invasive...
Looks fine, different is good, also I don't care one bit. The internals and features are great so I'm buying one no matter how it looks.
@playstation1995 My friend, you have very good taste in games. Dishonored is fantastic, can´t wait for Deathloop. Both Ratchet and Kena are definitely on my radar for sure. As for the PS5 console design..... I like a lot. The more I see the design, the more I apreciate it. Very bold and futuristic. Cheers and have a good one
While I'd say it's too early for me to get excited based on the games shown so far, I am REALLY interested in horizon 2 and R&C. Now if I finally see Jak 4 coming before the console is released, then I'll get properly excited.
I dont like the design of this, I looked at the other shown possible leaked designs and was blown away by the one with the cut away centre resembling a large controller and looked awesome but this design I'm very disappointed with such a shame and deflated feeling now its shown for what it is? Looks ugly and not unlike a wii
