Horizon Forbidden West is targeting a 2021 release date on PlayStation 5, according to Guerrilla Games’ Mathijs de Jonge. Speaking as part of a new overview video, the game director revealed that the Dutch developer has “been working very hard in order to create a worthy sequel that will appeal to older fans and newcomers”. He added: “We’re aiming to release the game next year, in 2021.”
Elsewhere in the video, de Jonge explains that the title’s map is a little bigger than Horizon Zero Dawn, but crucially it’s denser – allowing you to, for example, explore underwater. There are “dozens” of new machines and tribes to discover, as part of an open world that will span Utah through to the West coast. Who's hyped, then?

Hyyyyyyyyyyype.
Wow. That's very nice if they can do it. Huge system seller too.
Hopefully the English voice acting is a bit better in this one. Playing through HZD again and dang there is some laughable dialogue in this game.
This is one of the few games I truly enjoyed over the last 4 or 5 years. My favorite games are single player Bethesda games and with few exceptions, nothing else compares. Witcher 3 and this one are probably the two closest. Can't wait!
Sounds awesome. Map size of the first one was fine, this’ll be a day one for me for sure.
I TOLD YOU SO! early 2021, mark my words.
Wonder how many ps5 delays we'll see compared to the start of ps4. Man, so many delays back in 2013/14
''There are “dozens” of new machines''
Yeah, I'm really looking forward to this. Can't wait!
@Octane "I TOLD YOU SO! early 2021, mark my words."
I'm pretty sure if they say "Targeting 2021" w/o giving a season or quarter that means late 2021 and expect it in 2022.
So, consider your words marked.
I do appreciate the "targeting" verb though. Honest.
@TBubs311 Such as?
@rjejr They have quite a large staff this time around compared to a few years ago, so 2021 does seem more likely than 2022. We'll see I guess.
Denser worlds are great. I'd prefer having smaller worlds packed with content instead of bigger, more sparse worlds.
I wonder if there will be underwater machines to tame and ride? Plenty of large aquatic herbivores and fish-eaters they could pull from. I'd love to zip around underwater on a mechanized plesiosaur.
Also hope we can tame and ride some larger carnivorous creatures; that was a missed opportunity in the first game, I think.
I'm hyped for underwater section, can't wait to go to the beach in the game and just swimming until I find underwater ruin
Just curious, as someone who still hasn't gotten around to playing the original yet, how much have I just been spoiled to read that the games are set on actual future Earth?
I’m going late 2021, along with sack boy adventure and ratchet and clank earlier in the year.
They will want to keep momentum going and a big game for Christmas 2021.
Nintendo will come out with some big hitters 2021, new Zelda breath of the wild, new mario platformer and maybe even Metroid.
Competition and business is great for us gamers.
@Ear_wiG Robot dolpins.
@InsertUsername the entire brom quest for one. And much of the VA work outside of the main characters is stilted.
That said HZD is one of my favorite games of the gen. I don't usually replay games, but this along with Witcher 3 are one of the few.
I will probably wait to get a ps5/horizon pack in bundle when this launches. Maybe a limited edition ps5!
I just can’t get into this game. I played it, loved it but it started to grate on me and I had to turn it off.
It’s a shame as I know people love it
@Fath
Cant wait to explore Lakes and beaches underwater. It looks amazing and I can only imagine what it will be like discovering the Shellsnappers for the first time!
@thefirst what? You just pulled that statement out of your hole and then said it’s disappointing news... catch a grip
West Coast + Aloy + roboraptors = mega ultra anticipation
If true, the PS5 will have a system seller right there (unless the PC release comes shortly after that, which I think is a possibility). As a HZD fan I can't wait
This'll be the one to show to granny when she can visit.
"Targeting" 2021. Which means this will release in the fall or in 2022. I think that's the only big title Sony is gonna have for next year.
@ken_kaniff Ratchet & Clank and Gran Turismo 7 are probably 2021 games as well.
@TBubs311
Some of the dialogue was a bit cringe-inducing (particularly for some minor side quests), but it did have some genuine positives in there as well. One that sticks in my mind is some guy trying to nick Aloy's spear who asks how it works, for her to reply "you stick the pointy end in the machine". Hopefully they can be more consistent this time, but HZD is probably my favourite game this gen.
So excited.
Interesting to see them reveal a target window of sorts as well. I quite like that. Nothing official, just an honest aim that let's us know the plan.
This is the game I will buy a PS5 for and want to have a PS5 in place to play on Day 1. The other 'exclusive' games announced are games I could wait to play but this I want on Day 1
@NotSmartEnough Personally I didnt mind Aloy's and the other major characters acting, mostly perfectly serviceable, and in many cases much better.
I think if they take it up a notch in terms of meaningful exploration (random collectables were pretty throwaway) npc interaction and more npc dynamism in the open world (i.e. exclamation marks and all side content pretty much relegated to being found in towns), that would be cake.
Not that the game still won't be good if they don't compile my gaming wishlist, but just the thoughts of a serial open world gamer
This game has me hyped. I can’t wait to see how the story unfolds, and the plethora of new mechanical creatures to take down.
"There are “dozens” of new machines and tribes to discover"
All I needed to hear. Taking down a crazy new machine on my way to a destination was always a highlight!
@TBubs311
Yep, I'd agree with you on that. Sometimes it was a bit patchy, like they'd invested a lot of time and effort in some quests and interactions and had to rush others. Hopefully some of that was because it was a new IP and this time they'll be given all the time and resources they need to really nail it.
I really rate HZD, but there were things in the early trailers which never made it into the game. One was multiple Tallnecks walking with a large group of other machines, whereas what we got were solo Tallnecks walking a set route with no AI at all, basically a mobile map reveal tower!
Anyway it's a day 1 purchase for me.
@AdamNovice Yea you can tell year 3 or 4 will definitely be the year to get the PS5.
@ken_kaniff So not interested in those games then?
@AdamNovice knowing Polyphony GT7’s probably 2024 release! 😆
@kyleforrester87 Hah, fair enough; thanks, I'm happy I was a bit jostled over nothing
There goes the launch title i hoped for well one of them
@get2sammyb So that mean it launch in Spring 2021 ??
I guess I'll wait until 2021 to buy a ps5. This way most launch titles will be around £20, if not cheaper. But I won't care about any of them until I have fully finished HFW (I keep writing hzd2)
@AdamNovice Not that I'm not interested. Just nothing that I cant wait a few years on. New IPs are what draw me in. I'm still catching up on PS4, and I've had it since launch.
@InsertUsername "a large staff"
Large staff probably means larger game, larger game means more bugs to quash. And if they are going all in on water like they seem to be, well we all know how Aquaman 64 turned out, and Spore, so they may currently be biting off more than they can chew. And they were given all that PS5 power to work w/ they have a lot of pushing the envelope to test out. If this were a straight PS4 game I'd be confident in 2021 but that SSD has got to be making their eyes, and ambition, get big.
If I had to bet, I'd bet 2022. Though I'm a glass half empty person, I always bet on the worst case scenario.
Hope they hit 2021 but no matter when it comes out this is a day one purchase. I honsetly dont need to see any more. Loved the first one, really looking forward to this!
@Octane more like late 2021 ...
@Octane
Mark your words? If it was early 2021, they'd already let us know. "Aiming for 2021" means "2021 if everything goes according to plan, and it's not pushed back to 2022"
@gamer_since_83 They've always had a big game early in the year (March, April or May): Uncharted 4 in 2016, HZD in 2017, God of War in 2018, Days Gone in 2019, and TLOU2 this year (obviously delayed a little due to the coronavirus). But it makes perfect sense if Horizon 2 is early next year. What else will they release? Announce a new God of War in the meantime and release that instead? Horizon 2 in early 2021 is very possible IMO.
@AdamNovice
How could they not be? If they were 2020 games, we'd know already. GT7 is probably 2022
The first ones been on my backlog from the beginning.
@BrettAwesome If all of that is true, it would be a very disappointing launch year. GT7 is definitely launch window I think.
I think I'll wait until 2021 for a PS5. Seems that's when all the games are coming out. Or until I can afford one.
@Fath I suggest to be careful what you read as the why and how the world became the way it is in the game is pretty much the central mystery of the story, but it is clear from the beginning that this is Earth in the future.
Best way to avoid spoilers is just to play it - it's literally 10 quid in the current sale, so buy it now!
@rjejr I'm an optimistic person, so can't say I agree. Regardless of when though, it's going to be a big hit.
@Octane Nice recap of the early yearly game release dates, Nintneod does the same thing in May, almost every year w/o exception. Though this year was an old port and Paper Mario is in July.
I agree w/ you, they should have an early 2021 game, and maybe this should be it, but they dove in the deep end w/ the water so I don't think it's happening. Also not sure the release schedule holds for hardware launch years as they'll want everything out this holiday - see Miles Morales - so maybe nothing BIG next spring. Maybe they'll fill that time period w/ 4k remasters of all their PS2 games that were 1080p remastered on PS3 then ported to PS4.
@InsertUsername The world needs more optimists, keep on keeping on.
@BrettAwesome Well we didn't know about Horizon targeting a 2021 date till today so who's to say how far these games are.
@AdamNovice
All I'm saying is, if it was early 2021it would have stated so during the reveal. "Targeting" means they hope to get it out during 2021. If it was early 2021, they'd be pretty confident by now that they'd be able to make that deadline
2021 date nice . The pressure is on for me to 100% the main game + DLC and earn all trophies now haha XD.
