Since the PlayStation 5's big reveal earlier in the month, we've been hearing a lot more about next-gen upgrades for games that are set to release on PlayStation 4. The likes of Cyberpunk 2077, Destiny 2, and FIFA 21 are all offering free updates that take advantage of the new hardware, and Marvel's Avengers will be joining them.
If you buy Avengers on PS4, you get it for free on PS5 -- and it comes with a bunch of enhancements. Developer Crystal Dynamics speaks of near instant load times and two graphical modes on Sony's next-gen console. One will beef up the visuals, while the other targets 60 frame-per-second action at a dynamic 4K resolution.
Marvel's Avengers is due out on the 4th September, but will you be waiting it out to play on PS5? Go full Hulk in the comments section below.

So, Sony will not put a fancy name to Cross-buy like MS?
@Makina yeah why waste on unnecessary stuff. free upgrade that's simple and exactly what it means.. 😁
@H4ilHydra Yeah, i agree.
But, you now, big companies like fancy names for marketing purpose.
Sweet another 4k 60fps game!! Another game I will support with a purchase. Let's keep em coming guys!
Nice, sounds good.
My 12 years old tv is only 30fps and full hd 1080p. soooo what to choose? Better framerate I won't see or better graphics I won't see...? hmmm...
This game looks so "OK" to me. Nothing jumps out, it just exists. Which is quite upsetting, considering the subject of the game, the voice talent, and the hunger for a game in this franchise... It should be better.
Nothing has really wowed me about this game (aside from maybe Kamala's inclusion), but I have high hopes for it. I'd love a good Avengers outing.
I was honestly so hyped about this game , but then it was revealed it's online only . That killed it for me . Hope others can enjoy it tho.
@djlard Iwould choose to buy a new tv. Prices are really affordable now for a medium size hdr 4k tv. And the difference is really remarkable. If you catch a sale it'll lower than a ps4 pro. Good Luck.
I'm not buying another game until PS5 now, just can't bear the noise of the pro, ruined gaming for me. Trying to avoid last of us spoilers till then, going to be tough. I'll be in about avengers game then aswell.
I have plenty of doubts about this game but holy cow, that Hulk screenshot looks lovely
What about FFVII, Square? Those ***** background textures won't be fixing themselves ...
@Oscarjpc Sony 4k tv is still more expensive than ps4 pro. And I need also new reciever. It's quite hard now...
Sounds good, but I completely forgot about this Avengers game. Hopefully it’s turning out to be ok.
4K & 60 fps mode is nice, I hope sony at least upgraded this year ps4 exclusive games to that mode, it will be nice to replay ff7 remake, tlou2, and ghost of tsushima with 4K & 60 fps mode 😃
The trailer still never convinced me. But glad they upgrading it to PS5 for free.
Hopefully better than Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 - but that is not saying much. Keeping expectations in check for this one.
@Juanalf I think you don`t know the difference between dynamic and native 4k because dynamic 4k is mostly 1440p while native 4k is 2160p.
So dynamic not native? I thought this gen would be the rise of 4k 60fps across most if not all games. Basically saying 2k maybe, can't have it all.
Is no one else concerned that so little is known about this game? We're less than three months away from having it, and all we have to go off of is that mediocre E3 footage from last year. I dunno, I just get the feeling that this is gonna be massively disappointing.
People are so excited that the PS5 is gonna have these free upgrades, and I guess I agree that it's nice.
But again, it's more reason for me to not buy a new Playstation. I haven't run into a loading time that bothered me since the PS1 days. Never had an issue with it on my original PS4. I've also never had issues with FPS or resolution on PS4, looks great to me.
I was hoping PS5 would play PS3, PS4 and PS5 games all on one box, enabling me to shelve my PS3 and PS4. That would have given me a good reason to upgrade.
As it stands, I don't see any more reason to upgrade to the PS5 than I had with PS4 Pro - which I also skipped.
@Makina
Don't forget MS only does this for first party titles. They don't have a say in the "free upgrade" decissions made by third parties.
We're still not sure where Sony stands on this subject.
Shame the game looks like complete garbage.
@SwitchVogel I think if your looking a deep playing experience look elsewhere. What I have heard is its been designed that even a child could play this so take from that what you will.
@Juanalf but Xbots keep telling me PS5 will only have 30fps??
@djlard just buy a cheaper model? I'm also using my old 1080p TV but will presumably upgrade this year to fully benefit from picking up a ps5 in the year after. I've done some research, and you can grab a 55" beauty that's 4k, for less than 500 quid.
But if you're looking specifically for a brand new Sony TV, of course it's going to be about 3 times the price.
Good on them for caring about PS5 adopters. I still won't be playing this game until it hits ~$20 though.
They could just give me the game for free and I'm not sure I'd play it. Square seems to have plucked some of the poorer game designs from the last few years and stuck them together
I dont know what it is about this game BUT, I think it will be a massive flop.
IF your going to do a Marvel Avengers video games then cough up the money to get the film actors likenesses.
Yes I know its not based on the movies........ BUT who would you rather see in game, The actors we have seen on screen OR what looks like there stunt doubles?
I'm so hyped for this game. If it's anywhere near as fun as Marvel Ultimate Alliance, I know I'm gonna love it!
@Heavyarms55 Perhaps it'd be best to wait a couple of years then. By that time, several ps5 only games will have come out to justify the purchase.
@J2theEzzo Yeah but my Sony kept going strong i bought it a year in the PS3 lifespan and i just gave it too my mom who has use till last year when we wanted something new. 😆
And Sony has cheaper Tv's but the more expensive are better.
@djlard It's time to upgrade my man
@Morzy Headphones are my saviour.
@djlard
dont buy a sony tv many cheaper tvs out there that are just as good
Whilst free upgrades are sweet these are effectively still backwards compatible titles. What I don't want to see is true PS5 remasters come out a year later as that's just going to confuse the market and people will feel cheated.
CDProjekt have got the best idea and releasing a basic PS5 patch with improvements and then a full graphics upgrade patch later that brings it up to full next gen standards.
@Nickolaidas that's what I'm hoping for too. FF7 remake could definitely use some crispier textures.
I don't get some complaints about dynamic 4k. Isn't it much smarter to use checkerboard upscaling instead of native 4k to save resources for visual fidelity and stable frame rates. And no, not every game needs to be 30fps either.
@tameshiyaku agreed I'd rather have the checkerboard and 60fps, this is isn't like movies where we're gonna get a lot of close ups and still scenes apart from the actors where there will be a noticeable difference in quality. I just hope the graphics options become common place and you can pick and HDR is a forced standard by MS/Sony in regards to menu settings too many variations out there with varying degrees of success.
@SwitchVogel Nobody is concerned b/c between TLOU2, Cyberpunk and Ghost this gen and PS5 around the corner w/ HFW and Spider-man: Miles Morales nobody cares about this game. 😉
Do we really need a new Avengers game more than a full year after the 10 year MCU movie series ended? Would have been better 1 or 2 years ago. At least Iron Man is on PSVR, people will buy it for that.
@rjejr That's a good point. Avengers is only relevant in modern pop culture because of the film series, and though the MCU isn't stopping anytime soon, it's safe to say the Avengers team as we've known it is over.
I think the most worrying thing about this game is the fact that very few seem to care about it. The last Avengers film is literally the highest grossing movie ever, yet the excitement around a game based on that same IP is almost non-existent. Something just doesn't add up here.
@SwitchVogel #Avengersfatigue 😎
I think people were excited when they first showed this, then it turned into a mission based online something-or-other, I don't even know what. I think people would have been more excited for a Marvel Ultimate Alliance story driven rpg type game, not whatever this is.
And, AND, they should have ponied up the $ for their movie likenesses. People be like - I don't want to pay $60 to play as their stunt doubles. 😂 Actual meme, who knew?
@rjejr I'll be honest I'll not be pre ordering I hope it's good but the lack of game play trailers is bit worrying we still know very little about it considering the time left before release.
My money is Ghost and Cyberpunk for now this might be a sale purchase and I can check out some independent reviews and gameplay footage.
@DeadManInBlack I do think a lot of people will den of playing this, when it hits $20. May not take very long.
@rjejr me too I'm expecting it discounted by Christmas and on PSN Plus by same time next year
@DeadManInBlack I hope by this time next year PS+ isn't PS+, it's some kind of PS Now +. Being able to play Xbox One games on PC for only $5 per month - we don't own an Xbox - is nice. Really not sure how MS can manage it, it's almost too cheap.
@rjejr yeah Sony is lagging behind, personally if I was them I'd take a different route and perhaps charge a bit more and get big releases on there straight including 3rd party titles. Apologies I thought it was the Ultimate pass for PC and Xbox gaming which is like £10.99 over here.
I worry that we will get a netflix situation where the catalogue will get so big and we will be playing one out several hundred titles, old titles are nice but I think I'd rather just get them cheap in the sale.
From what I've heard they are working with MS Azure for PSN improvements whether that includes major changes to how we can access our games ?
@suikoden mine sony tv is holding 12 years. and must say, there were weeks, she runned 24 hours a day. None of other visual machines I got in life (tvs, monitors, displays etc.) runned that long. That's why I want to grab Sony tv again. ☺️
@PeakyBlinder dynamic does not mean mostly 1440p 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️.
Why do people try to misinform. The only thing it means is that it’s not locked to native 4k. Literally all it means. It could spend 5% of the time below native 4k and still be considered dynamic, or it could spend 95% of the time below native 4k and be considered dynamic.
Stop trying to make up facts to suit your narrative.
@ThaBEN actually Sony has the exact same policy for third party upgrades as Microsoft - totally up to the developer/publisher.
"...targets 60 frame-per-second action at a dynamic 4K resolution."
Sounds like it can't run at 4k :/ let's hope we don't start seeing this upscaled stuff again....
Sounds good, glad free cross gen is becoming clear. For those wanting 4k, 60fps, full raytracing and ultra detail. Thats not going to happen. but 60fps with high detail, ray tracing and advanced up scaling like DLSS will be miles ahead of the current gen. But the biggest change to games will be CPU based. Better physics, AI, more objects will transform games over the next few years
@djlard Oh man. Sorry to hear. Here's hoping for some summer sales on 4k TVs. I hope things look up, bro.
@naruball That's very likely what I will do.
The funny part is most people usually ask to be able to choose between graphics and performance. When they offer the choice people still complain that they cant have it all. Cant make this up.
@Oscarjpc No problem. ☺️ I don't need hi-end graphics. It was just rhetorical question... 😂 I focus on gameplay and story. ... and Hulk 😂😂😂😂😂
@JJ2 maybe they're not the same people, though? You clearly can't please everyone, but I think giving people a choice pleases most.
@naruball
Yes. I wonder if it's going to be a trend next gen. Demon's Souls is doing it. I understand we can always ask for more but I think this should be supported. After all, you can always push the graphics to insane levels so choice is nice and actually makes for more replayability.
@JJ2 You're right. If it becomes a trend, more developers will surely follow (even if they don't really want to).
@MarcG420 Bro if a gaming company was only suffering by small loss of pixel count from a native 4k version then they would be able to fix it to native 4k but when a company says dynamic 4k it always means the pixel count is lower to the extent that they can`t afford to make the game native 4k which means it`s more towards 1440p then 2160p.
@PeakyBlinder “bro” that’s just factually incorrect. The ONLY thing dynamic means it it is not locked to native resolution.
You really should know the facts before speaking to avoid looking ignorant like you have here...
Edit:
Look at shadow of war on one x dynamic resolution on the dynamic mode dips to 94% of full 4k sometimes but majority of the time native.
Still considered dynamic, and your moronic take of dynamic would say “MOSTLY 1440p HUR DUR”. PS5 is going to be much more powerful than the One X is as well. 🤦♂️
See the fallacy yet?
@MarcG420 Bro, did you even hear what I just said ? It`s all PS4 Pro all over again. We`ll see when Digital Foundry releases it`s video on the resolution and bro chill cuz you`re cussing for no reason.
@PeakyBlinder you must not be able to read. Reread what I said and maybe then you can get over that ignorance you have.
Are you too stupid to understand the example I gave you?? You also seem to be too stupid to actually understand what cussing is. Go ahead and quote where I cussed at you you ignorant child.
@MarcG420 You`re talking as if Square Enix themselves confirmed saying to you that pixel count drop will like 5% from 2160p. There is a chance that I am right but there is also a chance that you`re right but nothing is confirmed so please shut your ass up as I regret saying anything on this blog. You`re one of those annoying kids who won`t shut up about every single little thing cuz it would`ve made more sense you ***** talking to me if anyone even liked my comment.
@PeakyBlinder I was pointing out that you are absolutely full of crap in what you were saying, which you were.
I never once claimed to know how low or high the resolution stays, i was merely showing how stupid your assumptions were.
Reread all my replies and you’ll see I never once claimed that it only drops 5%.
I said: “ Why do people try to misinform. The only thing it means is that it’s not locked to native 4k. Literally all it means. It could spend 5% of the time below native 4k and still be considered dynamic, or it could spend 95% of the time below native 4k and be considered dynamic.”
You were the one trying to completely make up facts. Your reading comprehension is atrocious (I’ll use an easier to understand word for you since you’re clearly a child - terrible).
@MarcG420 My God !!! Can you just shut up ? What are you trying to prove to me ? Do you really indulge in every person`s comment ? If you read the comment that started this whole debacle, you could see me saying "mostly" 1440p so clearly I didn`t mean 1440p all the time so please shut up my friend.
@PeakyBlinder except that’s simply not true, is it?
Dynamic DOES NOT mean mostly 1440p. FACT.
If you weren’t ignorantly trying to spread misinformation I wouldn’t have replied to you at all child.
@MarcG420 You know what I am gonna let you have the win. Congratulations on defeating me on a comment I made (which apparently no one cares about since it has zero likes). Good day son.
