Whether you plan to purchase the PlayStation 5 with a Blu-ray disc drive or the all-digital option, there’s a good chance you’ll end up doing more with your console than simply playing games. Fortunately, Sony has a solution for all of your multimedia needs ready at launch: an official remote controller, which is part of the system’s product family.
According to the press release, the Media Remote includes a microphone for voice recognition, so you’ll be able to use it similarly to the DualSense controller. It adopts the same two-tone colour format as the console itself, with a black strip running through the centre of the unit. There’s no word on a price yet.

Never really understood these too well, but maybe this will be the generation I finally try one out.
I have a Sony TV (the OG 3D tv....yeah...that worked out well for me) Sony soundbar and PS4 and I generally only use the PS4 remote to do everything but turn on the TV. I guess having the controller fall asleep is a bit annoying, but other than that idk.
i think i'll pass on this one. i only use my console to play games these days. and if i would watch a movie i just the controller to navigate through the menus.
I don't get it... what's the benefit of using a remote like this over a controller?
Oh, I was under the impression it was bundled in with the console. Yeah, no chance I’m paying for a remote, regardless of how snazzy it looks.
Sony has had the best media remotes for a while. fingers crossed this one keeps it going
Never understood the need for these can do everything just as easily with controller and it looks cheap and tacky
Do people still use their consoles this day and age for media?
@suikoden The fact it has a 4K Blu-Ray drive is a huge bonus for me, I could never justify the price of the players but alongside the console it’s definitely worth it.
A similar controller comes standard with most LGs, can even control my PS4 with it.
If it was a universal remote - maybe. Been able to keep our living room to 1 universal remote and a controller.
We do use the PS4 for Amazon Prime Video. Just because Amazon refuses to support Chrome Cast. But the controller is good enough.
I use a Logitech Harmony remote for controlling TV, Amp, BTTV, UHD, etc. It's got Bluetooth, so controls the PS4 as well, but I rarely use the PS4 for anything other than gaming, so it's not that useful.
One thing missing from the PS4 Bluetooth remote profile is the ability to power the console on, so I've got a convoluted workaround triggered by the Harmony activity which boots the console.
I've got no intention of getting a separate media remote from PS5, but I hope that the existing PS4 integration carries on working.
@Mittsu Just more convenient really, isn't it?
White is literally the WORST colour for consoles ever. The amount of yellowing in white plastics is insane, everybody always wants dark coloured consoles. As soon as you market in white, it fails every time in the long run and you just look like you’re trying to win Mormons over, and that’s it.
@Shinobi1Kenoby
Mormons?
What? I'm not religious, but try replacing that word in your post with some other large religions and reread it. Still sound ok?
@Shinobi1Kenoby "Everybody". I'm afraid you're looking at the one person that loves white consoles, and will happily sell an ugly horrible black console towards a white one when it's released.
Never had any issue with yellowing either. I even have a Super Nintendo that hasn't yellowed that's been in the family since 1992.
Also, not a mormon. Generalising is great, isn't it?
I only use my console to play games - I have Sky and a Smart TV for all TV/Film viewing...
My tv remote controls the PS4 for all media stuff and has a mic, so doubt I will need one of these.
@NotSmartEnough why am I looking to replace the word Mormon with a large religion? That makes no sense.
@Crimson_Ridley well you’re reaffirming that you are one deviation from the general so thanks for helping to reinforce my point. Yes you may personally like a white console and sometimes white appliances do sell to a minor market sector who over-try to “dare to be different” and yes some white appliances don’t yellow. BUT Unfortunately, GENERALLY, white appliances have a lower marketing appeal and yes they do yellow. You can argue that, but then you’re just looking Ridiculous arguing against an historic fact. good luck
I also looked directly at you at no point and don’t care. if my point was to care about the opinion of a single consumer, then yes I’d have looked at you and addressed you. Unfortunately I didn’t. I generalised and you chirped in to help underline the point I was making, so than you for that.
I'm colour blind so I won't notice if the console turns yellow 🤔
@Shinobi1Kenoby
You said everybody wants dark consoles, and white consoles always yellow. I was the contrarion that is saying that not everybody wants a dark console, and white consoles don't always yellow. I'm certainly not the only outlier to this fact either.
You can have your opinion, but generalising just looks bad on you.
@Crimson_Ridley sorry generalising on a fact that is statistically and inherently true is unfortunately just true and also accommodates for the minor minority that think against it. That’s unfortunately the truth of a generalisation in this instance.
No matter how hard you try to use a thesaurus to try and sound Intellectual, you’re just wrong and digging a hole that is laughable reinforcing what I’m saying.
@Shinobi1Kenoby
You're generalising based on religion. Your assertion is that black and white console design will appeal more to Mormons.
I was asking you to consider how your post would have read if you'd used Islam or Hinduism instead.
Am I being sufficiently clear for your now?
I used the PS3 one a bit as it was my blueray player and blockbusters was still a thing, don't know what I would use one today for though. Does it do Jedi light saber?
Very slick looking remote but I honestly wouldn't have any use for it. I bought a media remote for both the ps3 and ps4 and hardly used them. With pretty much all tvs having streaming apps built in and fact it's not any more convenient than just using a controller will probably pass. Does look nice though, I like how the styling is consistent
@NotSmartEnough clearer? Yes. Informed and educated no? Out of all the religions available to opt for in the world, the mormon religion has a strong predilection for all things coloured white, more so than any other religion in the world. Hence my satirical swipe at why a company could chose this crap colour for their marketing. It works for no other industry. Except a Mormon shoe shop
@Shinobi1Kenoby
Trying to insult someone's intelligence during a debate? Poor show, Shinobi, very poor. You were doing ever so well.
I'm going to take my intellect (or apparant lack of, "Pot meet kettle" and all that), and bid you good day. I have games to play.
@Shinobi1Kenoby
Your words:
"the timing religion had a strong predilection for all things coloured white"
Double down on your generalisation. Not sure if you're trying to say that I'm uniformed and ill-educated, but I think your posts in this comments section are not reflecting very well on you.
@Shinobi1Kenoby some white plastics discolour. Not all. I have a white MacBook from the late 90's, not even a hit of yellowing. Ditto my White PS2. The issue is most probably caused by Bromine which can become unstable if exposed to flame or UV light. Bromine isn't really the flame retardant of choice in most plastics anymore, and certainly not ABS plastics. As to white electronics, I mentioned Apple, but there are also other examples which disprove your argument that they're unpopular. White consoles as alternative models have proved massively popular. Sure it's personal choice, but the sweeping generalisations you made quite frankly were too sweeping to be true. Which is why you should steer clear of them.
My thoughts on the colour scheme... or lack of colour scheme is that it's growing on me. The DualSense looks badass now, the headset looks sleek, and the console... Still not sold on the aesthetics, but it's certainly not because of the colour scheme.
If they support hdr/dolby vision /atmos/24p on netflix and amazon prime properly I maybe get one.
I bought the PDP Cloud remote for my PS4 to use with my PS Vue subscription.
That's not a joke, I did.
@NotSmartEnough Not wishing to interrupt your crusade against rhetorical generalizations, nor defend @Shinobi1Kenoby 's dismissive replies, however the I got the Mormon reference straightaway and found it quite amusing. Not sure if this is the hill (either of) you want to die on, but each to his/her own.
Looks like my yacht from GTA Online.
@JohnnyBastos
It's not a crusade, just calling them out for being a berk. I got the reference, but didn't find it funny. As you say, each to their own.
I just hope this doesn't end up costing like $40 plus. PS4 Media Remote is really over priced.
@NotSmartEnough Yeh, fair enough. BTW, how old is your Logitech Harmony? Mine started playing up after a couple of years - the build quality doesn't seem so great.
@SirAngry the controller looks absolutely disgusting in my opinion. The more they deviate from the DualShock the worse it gets.
@Crimson_Ridley where have I insulted somebodies intelligence?
@NotSmartEnough calling me out? 😂 😂 😂 for a rumble? Downtown?
I made a reference to something that was relevant and satirical. You didn’t get the reference or wouldn’t have suggested I replace the word Mormon with another religion.
@SirAngry true. Also not all white plastics that yellow do indeed end up yellowing. My main point was that white consoles and electronic appliances have always been less popular. Like white cars and TVs
@NotSmartEnough not saying you are ill educated at all, I don’t know you or the education you’ve received. Hard to measure a person’s level of intellect in an online comments section at the best of times.
However, my statement is that your comment was ill-informed and uneducated and purely commenting on the the fact you didn’t know that Mormons hold the colour white almost as in high regard as they do God; you suggested I should replace the word Mormon with either Hindu, Islam or Judaism.
Your comment made no sense at all as you missed the joke. You were ill informed and uneducated on Mormonism’s favourite colour. That is all. Hardly something that will stop you getting hired for a job is it.
@JohnnyBastos
I got it 4 or 5 years ago. It's the one with the separate hub, so the handset uses RF rather then IR, which avoids any line-of-sight issues. I've found it reliable; sometimes the 'power on' activity macros can take a while to execute, but overall it's been fine.
One of the things I do like about it is that it's compatible with 'smart home' devices. I tinker a lot with electronics and have found that the Harmony can control anything that you can expose via an Alexa skill, so I can use it to toggle different security cameras on a Pi touchscreen display, for example.
Certainly a lot better than using separate remote controls and fielding constant queries from my wife and kids about which amp/TV input is which!
@Shinobi1Kenoby yeah I think I got your point, I just think people were objecting to the hyperbole. I actually quite like some white electronics. Not all. As to the DualSense I quite like the look of it. I know it might not be to everyone's tastes (what is?), but I do think it looks pretty nice. I'm one of those who actually would list the DS4 as their favourite joypad of all time. It's not perfect, but it's the best so far, so I'll wait until the DualSense is out in the wild so to speak before judging it. However, developers who have used it love it.
@SirAngry the switch pro controller is by far and wide the best and best quality controller I’ve ever seen and used. The WORST controller is the insanely cheap feeling XBox One controller. DualShock falls somewhere in between for me. I’ve never liked the sticks being low and central, feels unnatural and uncomfortable.
@Shinobi1Kenoby
You still don't get it. Try replacing Mormonism with other religions; like this:
"Black and white console? Who are they trying to appeal to? Hasidic Jews?"
"Not sure about the blue LEDs. They should have gone with orange; might shift a few more consoles to the Protestants in Northern Ireland!"
Either you accept that they're all ok, or you admit that there's something different about Mormonism which makes your comment ok but the ones above unacceptable.
I accept that some religions have associations or affinities with particular colours. It doesn't mean that an individual's buying preference for a video game console is going to align to the broader religious grouping; that is a generalisation.
You could have replied to tell me that I'm being overly concerned about this and that could have been a valid discussion, but that's not the approach you took: It was you who wrote "Informed and educated no?" and made it personal.
How informed and educated are you? Do these quotes seem familiar?
"The amount of yellowing in white plastics is insane, everybody walkways wants dark coloured consoles." Walkways? What are you on about? Do you read the stuff you write?
"well you’re reaffirming that you a one that a deviation from the general so thanks for helping to reinforce my point." What? Any resemblance to written English is purely coincidental, right?
@NotSmartEnough now you’re just sounding silly and resorting to picking up on typos? 😂 half brain and fill in the blanks unless your being facetious to Try and be annoying? walkways=always and was obviously always, misspelled and incorrectly autocorrected.
Back to the actual “conversation” you’ve changed you line of argument again to try and win a non-existent argument because I pointed out the Mormon faith LOVES white stuff.
You said:
“ What? I'm not religious, but try replacing that word in your post with some other large religions and reread it. Still sound ok?”
No it wouldn’t. Had I replaced that one word with Muslim/Jewish/Christian, it just wouldn’t have made any sense.
Which would have made my comment about marketing white consoles to Jewish people just sound as insane as your argument. Now you’re saying, if I said something completely entirely and I posted about orange Consoles for Irish Catholic’s? what the hell are you talking about?
The PS5 is white. A comment that this would appeal to Mormons is satirical. The fact you’ve taken offence to this is just mental. Unless you either A: hate Mormons. Or B:Are a Mormon and are easily offended by anything you could misread as being against Mormons, which my original comment wasn’t. Or C:you just like finding arguments to make online?
You really are earning the title of your username.
"non-exultant argument"
Try harder.
I'll just continue getting Alexa to do it all for me. Far easier.
I'll be passing on this, but good to know there's an option?
@NotSmartEnough Ah, I just got the basic one, it's showing it's age, but it wasn't the revolution I hoped. I thought I was smart getting everything onto one remote controller, but my wife still has to ask which preset she needs to press to go from netflix to the digital box or turn down music that's playing. It's telling that the original remotes still have their batteries in.
@Shinobi1Kenoby the Switch Pro Controller is a good controller too. I personally don't like the asymmetrical stick layout, and never have. Probably comes from all the time I spent with the first TimeSplitters on PS2. That's what really primed me for symmetrical sticks. Could never get used to the GameCube or OG Xbox controllers, either the Duke or smaller Japanese one after that. The X1 Controller is cheap, it feels horrible to use, it was a massive downgrade on the 360 Controller in my opinion. This is why I always wait until they're in my hand to judge.
@NotSmartEnough 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Now you’re just being pathetic. Typo police makes your entire argument correct now does it?
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@NotSmartEnough instant improvement
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2020/06/ps5_fans_dream_of_an_all_black_console_with_these_mock-ups
@Crimson_Ridley I don't like black or white. I would rather it be brushed aluminum.
@NotSmartEnough I use a Harmony remote too. But what intrigues me about this remote, particularly as a Harmony user, are the four buttons at the bottom that are not labeled. Wondering if those are programmable to launch specific apps (like Netflix, Hulu, etc.). If so, that's a huge deal to me, as I could program my Harmony remote to duplicate that functionality. As it is now, I have to program a sequence of button presses which take time to execute, and don't work 100% of the time, so having the ability to program specific apps to a single button press would be very appealing to me. Of course, I'm not sure if you'd actually need the remote present to program it in this way. But if you do, I'd say it's worth the money.
@Stragen8 To think that you could even use the PS4 remote to turn on the TV as well using HDMI CEC link. When you press the PS button on your remote, the TV will turn on as well.
@Mittsu if you are charging your controllers the remote makes a nice addition to have. I bought one for the Xbox One and use it all the time. I purchased one for the PS5 since I'll be using it more now that it has a 4k drive.
