Developer EA Motive has lifted the lid on its current-gen Star Wars project with an announcement trailer that confirms last week's leak. Star Wars: Squadrons is a PlayStation 4 title arriving on 2nd October 2020 that sees you take to the stars as a pilot of various space ships. It's set after the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and includes both a single player campaign and a suite of multiplayer options.
We've embedded the announcement trailer above, but you'll be able to see Star Wars: Squadrons in action with a full gameplay reveal at EA Play this Thursday. The game will also support cross-play between PC, Xbox One, and PS4 platforms, meaning you can team up with friends on other consoles should the Dark Side prove too difficult to take down on your own. Rather excitingly, Star Wars: Squadrons also supports PlayStation VR -- you can play the entire game with the headset on.
Has Star Wars: Squadrons gotten you hyped? Let us know in the comments below.

Utter waste of time that was. All CGI, zero gameplay.
Sounds like it'll be 5 v 5 multi-player, which won't interest me in the slightest.
Really wish there was a gameplay trailer considering it comes out in October. I am excited though, I loved Rogue Leader on GameCube.
Read the article guys, gameplay on Friday at EA Play stream. I'm interested.
Looks cool, EA seemingly going all in with crossplay is a great thing to see!
Oh EA, why do you never learn. I guess because gamers keep letting you get away with it. CGI trailers with zero gameplay, for a game out it 4 months? Yeah, that does not bode well at all.
Star Wars space battle game and it’s fully playable in PSVR?!? Hell yes!
Useless trailer, I don't get why they keep doing this.
@BearsEatBeets Read the article, but it changes nothing. The gameplay footage on Thursday should have been the reveal, not this CGI nonsense.
Anyway, it seems the whole game is pretty much going to be the flying section from SWBF2; if so, that alone rules me out. Star Wars games have never really done it for me anyway - as much as I love the (original) films, when it comes to the games, I've only ever bought Rogue Squadron on the GameCube. I downloaded SWBF2 with Plus, but so far find it quite average.
Aw yeah...cross play! Especially with something that might end up being niche (dogfighting...is that what it's called? A little weird, now that I think about it). I'm optimistic.
Hmm, i seem to remember a lot of CGI trailers during Sony's event but nobody was moaning then. Some people just love to hate certain publishers don't they.
@Paranoimia dude, it literally says in the article "includes both a single player campaign and a suite of multiplayer options."
@Paranoimia They could have done that but then there wouldn't be any point in it being in their EA Play event if they had shown it all now. Ok maybe they could have squeezed a few seconds of actual gameplay in but I'm fine with it with being nothing more than a cinematic trailer. It serves the purpose of generating interest and getting people watching the stream on Friday.
EA makes me worry. But the name Squadrons does make me excited. Rogue Squadron for N64 and Rogue Leader for GameCube were simply amazing. I hope it's not basically the same Battlefront 2 gameplay, though.
Pathetic.... 2 mins to inform and display the game and I am none the wiser. Absolutely speechless at the incompetence.
@AhabSpampurse Yeah, granted I missed that... fair enough. I skim-read it and jumped straight over to YouTube to watch as it was about to start.
Even so, I think I'm unlikely to bother with it. Not really interested in a full game of the flying parts from SWBF2 as I don't enjoy them. Each to their own though, if it's your thing, great.
@BearsEatBeets Sorry, what I meant was they should have not bothered with this at all, and used the gameplay as the reveal on Thursday.
Loved the Rogue One X-Wing VR mission in Battlefront. If this improves on that, it will be epic.
@Paranoimia yeah buddy, no beef. I would have been disappointed if it was just PvP so I was happy to see single player confirmation. I was pointing it out in case it made a difference for you ✌
@Paranoimia Oh yeah they could have saved themselves time and money and just tweeted new Star Wars game this Friday and pretty much had the same effect.
Although saying that the trailer has a pretty good like to dislike ratio, especially for an EA game.
If they have taken Ace Combat 7’s guidance by prioritising the campaign and then crafting the multiplayer as an expansion then I may be interested. But this is EA. Campaign likely to be short and token whilst multiplayer will be ripe with grinding and attempts to monetise.
If this doesn’t end up being the case then colour me surprised but with their track record, it’s hard not to be cynical.
No thanks. These EA Star Wars games are 0 for 3 so far for me, so I'll pass.
PSVR!!! Can’t wait. Amazing news.
@Paranoimia not sure what you're so upset about. It literally said it was an announcement trailer and that gameplay would be shown on Thursday at EA Play.
@keihtg It's called dogfighting because pilots chase each others tails. The more you know! đŸ˜‰ I hope this game's good, I absolutely loved Factor 5's games back in the day, even Battle for Naboo was probably the best Episode 1 tie in.
@Foty I'm not upset in the slightest... I just think that announcing a new game without any actual gameplay footage is a complete waste of everyone's time.
As I said in a previous comment, they have gameplay coming at EA Play, so why not just forget about CGI trailers which impress nobody, and just leave it until then and make the gameplay trailer the reveal?
Yeah I'm really looking forward to this. I'll be playing on PC in VR. As some have mentioned the VR demo in battlefront was amazing so if they build on that it should be something special. I just hope that it is somewhere near how good the rogue squadron games were.
@Paranoimia
It's to build hype and it wasn't a bad trailer besides lack of gameplay in all fairness.
@Orshudei Ooohhhhhh....it all makes sense now! Arf arf!
Really hope this is good, enjoyed Fallen Order, but space battles were always one of my favourite aspects of Star Wars...
Looks really cool! With this and Jedi Fallen Order, it's nice to see EA finally doing some interesting and fun stuff with the license besides Battlefront.
PSVR support has me interested.
After Fallen Order I'm having faith hope this will be good.. Loved the GC game!! But still.. EA.. And multiplayer being present.. They say no micro transactions but we all know their track record.
Hope the campaign is better than BF2, I'm not a big multiplayer fan but maybe this is something I like.
@Paranoimia not really a waste of time. Had this announcement not come out, a lot of people probably wouldn't have known about this game. I'm one of those people. Tbh, I would have liked some gameplay as well, but the trailer piqued my interest.
Naturally, it could only be a woman pilot. Cos men don't make the grade. Cos women.
Also a new PS4 game less than 3 months out from the PS5 is a smart marketing move for sure....
If this game is coming out for everything (basically) then why is the headline just PS4? Literally the only reason I clicked was to find out why such a game would be exclusive... But maybe that's what you were counting on and maybe it's time I tell Google now to stop showing me anything from this site
@nessisonett don't get too excited, that game was made by factor 5 and they don't exist anymore.
Yes to PSVR plz plz pretty plz!!?
If thid ends up anything like X wing and TIE fighter, I'm all in
Brings me right back to X-Wing VS Tie Fighter back in the day. Loved those. Also loved the space missions in the Battlefront Games. Hope this is some sort of blend, with plenty of missions and objectives, and not purely 5 vs 5 arenabattle, which most likely it is...
Excellent I am looking forward to playing this in VR, as someone who grew up with only arcade cabinets (80s Atari) to play Star Wars space battle games on it sure has come a long way!
@d0x360 It's a Playstation focused site, of course their only going talk about what's relevant for that platform. I'm surprised it took this long to figure it out.
Their was a part in the cutscene that made no (star wars) logical sense. I get they wanted to flex all the ship's you could use, but no one is taking a Y -Wing out for a space battle...
