Evo 2020 was cancelled earlier this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but a series of online events were set to replace it. Now, those events are officially cancelled as well.
Joey Cuellar, commonly known as Mr. Wizard, has been accused of sexual misconduct. Cuellar was the CEO of Evo, but he's now been removed from the organisation.
You can find Evo's official statement below.

Over the last 24 hours or so, before this official statement was made public, fighting game developers and publishers withdrew their support from the event. Capcom, Bandai Namco, NetherRealm Studios, and more all released statements confirming their immediate removal from Evo. Numerous commentators, streamers, and competitors had also withdrawn their support.

It’s truly a shame for everybody else involved, for this to implode because of one man’s selfish actions. And before anyone jumps in about ‘cancel culture’ or ‘witch-hunt against men’, it was young boys he was preying on. He stands accused of being a paedophile as well, something left out of most articles.
Before anyone goes on about "accusations without proof" or whatever, the accused has already basically admitted his guilt online.
A number of these accusations are also shaking up the competitive Smash world. Several big names (within that community, anyway) involved.
It's a real shame for Evo and all the competitors and games involved. Obviously this is the right decision to make under the circumstances, but in addition to the victims, this negatively affects everyone in the fighting game community who just want to compete and share their passion for great games.
Hopefully Evo will rebound from this and come back stronger next year.
This was a guy who seemed to have a superiority complex. Always the ones who pretend they're such great people and love to tell you about it.
too many perverts spoil the fun, really need to ensure a zero tolerance policy, it's very sad this has all come out like this all at once for various reasons, hopefully it prevents some future occurrences
@Gamer83
That's doesn't surprise at all.
I don't really know about this, but. The police really need's to be involved about this sort of stuff, it's alright canceling them defunding them what ever. But they could go onto doing that someone else, while they free to walk around.
It’s sucks about EVO, but the right call was made here.
I wouldn't trust a geezer with a name like Mr Wizard.
@mini_piekarnik Yeah, it's sad to read about some of this stuff, especially stuff involving minors who go to arcades or events just to play some games.
Also, that's the thing about zero tolerance: if the punishment is harsh enough, people will stop doing it! Now if only drunk driving rules weren't so lax in the States, we might stop people with 2-3 DUIs from running over kids all the time. But I digress. There's a lot of injustice in the modern "civilized" world still, and it's nice to see some people FINALLY being held accountable for their actions.
@ApostateMage I was going to comment the same thing.
The last 24 hours have been crazy in the competitive fighting game scene.
I don’t get why they cancelled the event when the company did the right thing by getting rid of bloke who the police will be dealing with now so that should be the end of that, why cancel the event and disappoint the fans? They should of just went ahead and not give the pedo the time of day as he will now just rot in a cell. It just seems people go OTT when some scandal happens then decide to put the brakes on everything as if the world has stopped spinning. Just stop messing about and carry on.
What a bad day (well, year really) for the FGC. I was really looking forward to EVO but let these days be rock bottom and let’s start over.
@MaccaMUFC I agree with you, but those corporate reputations seem to matter a lot. And EVO themselves were doing almost all of the work to make this event happen, so once one company pulls support with an excuse like 'in honor of the victims' or the like, as good as that sentiment is the other companies will follow. Then suddenly the event is done. Now if each had poured money into it, maybe it would continue in some fashion.
