Aw, shucks – here we go again, folks. An excerpt from Game Informer magazine shared on Reddit and later around the web suggests that upcoming PlayStation 5 standalone exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales may ship with a remastered version of the original PlayStation 4 game. This was a popular point of discussion last month that was never fully clarified, but our guess is that this rumour is based on old information.
The aforementioned publication reports that “Miles Morales isn’t a traditional sequel, since it comes with a remastered version of Insomniac’s Spider-Man that takes full advantage of the PS5 hardware”. You may recall there was an interview with a Sony executive Simon Rutter that alluded to something like this in June, where he described the PS5 game as “an expansion and an enhancement to the previous game”.
Insomniac Games, the series’ developer, later clarified: “Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is the next adventure in the Marvel's Spider-Man universe. We will reveal more about this standalone game at a future date.” None of this necessarily rules out the inclusion of a remastered version of the original game, but it was assumed from this clarification that it’s a full game in its own right, and that it won’t be bundled with the PS4 exclusive.
Nevertheless, we reached out to Sony for additional clarification, and we’re still waiting for a response to our queries. We’ll update if we hear anything back. Our guess is that Game Informer’s working on outdated information here, and while it’s certainly possible that Marvel’s Spider-Man will be updated for the PS5, this rumour isn’t confirmation of that in the slightest. What we do know is that Miles Morales is a standalone game.

My guess is that you will be able to buy the original Spider-Man, the city that never sleeps and Miles Morales. For the price of a full game. Or just Spider-Man Miles Morales at the same price point that lost legacy was released at.
Miles Morales may very well be a standalone title, but I could see Sony releasing the original Spider-Man with PS5 updates as a double-pack.
Honestly, I see Sony actually locking the PS5 version of the original Spider-Man behind owning Miles Morales. While I love Sony as an entertainment company (both movies and games), I don't trust them as a corporation to not pull a little corporate greed BS - they already lock 3D audio via headphones on most games behind owning their $130 Platinum Headset (when 3D audio can be achieved on ANY headset), so why not lock a PS5 upgrade behind this standalone title?
Yes I reckon it's still the same misinformation (or poor reporting) some of the press, and consequently the public, is running with..
It doesnt really make sense and not what is official so far anyway.
I’m going with the PS5 remaster.
No. The whole point of BC was to eliminate remasters. It should be a free upgrade for existing owners.
More puddles i see
@shuvamg009 true, and it probably will be, but they might make a pack with spider man + season pass + miles morales.
Spider-Man PS4 should automatically become a remaster the moment I put the disc in the PS5. I won't pay a single cent for something the competition will be doing for free, I hope this turns out to be just really bad journalism.
@Juanalf Updating the client through backwards compatibility, while super cool, is not the same as a remaster. You do realise that, right?
@get2sammyb I meant we shouldn't have to rebuy games so we can experience them with improved visuals and framerate. Series X will play your old Xbone games with improvements massive enough that they could be considered remastered...but at no extra cost so I expect nothing less from Sony.
That same goes for whatever else the competition does. If Microsoft removes paying for online I expect Sony to match, surpass or really improve what we are getting now.
@shuvamg009 Tell that to Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story on 3DS.
It's a Remaster of the original DS game. And guess what's BC with DS games.
@HotGoomba It also came out like ten years after the original and had an updated presentation to reflect the new M&L games. It's not a remaster, it's a remake from the ground up. Spider-Man PS4 came out almost two years ago and it would just make more sense if it was backwards compatible to start with on PS5. It's not the kind of game that needs that many graphical touch ups or QoL improvements to presentation or gameplay that couldn't just be addressed in future games.
Honestly does Marvel's Spider-Man really need the remaster treatment NOW of all times? It made at least a bit of sense with TLoU Remastered because the PS4 wasn't going to be backwards compatible with PS3 games, but not only is PS5 going to be BC with PS4 games but Spider-Man came out under two years ago.
People are misunderstanding remaster for repackaged. Sony will know that there are those that didn't get a PS4 so having a Spider-Man game day one makes a lot of sense.
@TheFrenchiestFry Yeah, but the original game was still playable on the 3DS through Backwards Compatibility. If they released it on the Switch, that would've been different, as the Switch isn't BC with previous generations, and it was out by then.
It's like when Twilight Princess was rereleased on Wii U, even though the original Wii Version is playable on Wii U through BC. And the only things that makes the Twilight Princess Rerelease dumber than the Inside Story remake is that at least Inside Story:RE was a remake unlike Zelda Twilight:RE, which was a Remaster, and that Twilight:RE took away Wii Remote support, which is dumb. At least Inside Story added a side adventure [Bowser's Minions].
@Flyin45s Really hope so. PS4 had a genuine reason to do PS3 remasters, with the hardware being so different. After MS announcing free upgrades, it should be the norm going forward. Yes to remakes, no to remasters.
@HotGoomba Nintendo has the ***** business practices hidden behind great games. But their fanbase gives them a free pass for anything. Fortunately, I'm not one of them.
@shuvamg009 I think that they treat their employees well and they earn good money, but they can really do dumb stuff, like restricting Paper Mario Developers from making original characters. WHY
Also, I'm still wondering why there 2020 launchs have been quiet besides Paper Mario and Animal Crossing and Clubhouse Games. Those are all great games, but we all know nintendo has more up their sleeve.
@HotGoomba Again. Twilight Princess HD was released 10 years after the original game and the main campaign is based off the original GameCube version while the Wii version with the flipped overworld is relegated to Master Mode. That's like saying Metroid Samus Returns didn't need to happen because you could just download Metroid II off the eShop as a Game Boy VC title. There are just some games who reach that age where they could benefit from some QoL improvements or graphical touch ups to bring them up to more modern standards as AAA games. Spider-Man doesn't need that right now, but 10 or 15 year old games aren't exempt from getting that treatment because they're just that.
@TheFrenchiestFry Ok, I see what you mean. Comparing it to Samus Returns is kinda weird since that was a 20 year gap compared a 10 year gap, and it's still playable on the 3DS and Wii, but it still makes since, and a Spider-Man Port/Remaster is way dumber either way.
