With the release of Ghost of Tsushima, Sony has pretty much capped an outstanding generation of support for the PlayStation 4. But which titles have raked in the most cash in the United States thus far? NPD analyst Mat Piscatella has revealed the ranking of the top five exclusive games based on life-to-date dollar sales, and it demonstrates what a successful generation the Japanese giant has had:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man
- God of War
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- The Last of Us: Part II
- Final Fantasy VII Remake
There are a few things worthy of note here: Marvel’s Spider-Man’s success bodes well for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which is destined to be a gigantic hit for PlayStation 5 at launch later this year. Guerrilla Games must be absolutely thrilled with the success of Horizon Zero Dawn as well, given it was an unproven property when it launched in 2017.
But look at The Last of Us: Part II go: it’s only been out a month or so and it’s already the fourth best-selling PS4 exclusive of the generation. It’d be interesting to see a full top ten, as we’d love to know where the likes of Bloodborne and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End fit in. What an impressive generation it’s been for the PS4, though!

Crazy generation! Sony's been on first for a few years now.
I would had thought Uncharted 4 would be up there.
Not Bloodbourne though, it's not everyones cup of tea.
Played, and loved every one of em except FF7.
Yeah, they’ve been showing the world that the true reason to get a PlayStation console is the games!
This is one of the reasons why they’ll be ahead next gen too. The other obvious reason is Microsoft has for some reason decided to try to sell their next gen console by eliminating its need completely.
Also, I’ve played and beaten them all.
Weird not seeing Uncharted 4 up there considering I think its the best selling PS4 exclusive overall
@eltomo Bloodbornes down there with dark souls bro. Ok, but not up here. This top 5; “uncharted” territory.
Own 3, platinumed 2 (Horizon and Spider-Man). Don't own FF VII as I still have not played a single game in the series.
@carlos82 this would be according to npd which would be North America only.
Edit: actually US only not even counting Canada or Mexico.
Its a list but without figures its meaningless. You would always get a top 5 games no matter how many sales there were.
@MarcG420 I realise that, just with it being one of the biggest markets I'd expect to see it up there. A lot of its sales could be digital with all the sales throughout the years
@blacklivesmatter showing the figures wouldn't change the order, so how is it meaningless when its purpose is to show us the top 5 games?
@carlos82 very true. Top 5 exclusives according to physical sales in the U.S. would be more succinct.

This was a great generation, and I'm really looking forward to the next gen. The competition is heating up, and it's bound to make this coming gen really interesting.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see TLOU2 leap frog to the top at this rate since it’s still relatively new.
Great list of games there, hopefully they can carry this type of momentum into next generation
Final fantasy 7 remake sold more than uncharted 4? Didn't uncharted 4 sold like 16M+? Spider-man is loved internationally so of course it's number 1 exclusive
Man I want to see the top 10 rather than just 5, I want to know how's days gone, gran tourismo sport, and ghost of tsushima sells compared to other exclusives.
No UC4? That surprises me. Maybe we've hit a wall with Uncharted and its time to hit the drawing board again. Horizon and Ghosts are easily my 2 favorite open world games this gen. If i had to rank my top 5 it would be GoW, Sushi, Horizon, Last of us 2, and FF7R. Honorable to INfamous SS, Dying Light and Rocket League. Of course some indies are right up there too
Dont think it would be too long before GoT reared its head on to that list too. Dont know the sales figures for it but it must have been pretty huge.
Guess if the game has big launch selling at launch price it make more money than a game that sells more volume over time at much lower price.
Has the price of games at launch gone up since Uncharted 4 launched?
@MarcG420
Good ole Microsoft, they make a muddle out of such a simple job that Sony and Nintendo do at the start of each next generation.
@Dezzy70 seriously though, I’m not sure how a complete management purge hasn’t happened after this gen.
Loved them all apart from LoU2, but hey 4 out of 5 is great and playing through GoT now and loving it!

I have a hard time believing these rankings, especially FFVII and TLoU2, when SIE's Game & Network Services Segment presentation from May 2019 showed Uncharted 4 at around 15M sold. I don't see how either could hit that number in the amount of time they've been available.

@Richnj that was at the beginning of this gen. Just think about it: they got rid of mattrick after the botched Xbox one reveal and he was coming off the relative success of the Xbox 360. Phil is getting this launch just as bad after having a much worse generation than the 360’s.
@Arugula you could just wait for the ps5 update?
But Horizon isn't.... Well Anyways 😁 I'm really curious what Santa Monica is up to, I've replayed God Of War recently and still can't believe how they managed to make it look that good with basically non existent loading.
It really is crazy just how many top quality exclusives there have been this generation.
They did a "best PS4 exclusive" episode of the PS I Love You podcast this week and it's just astounding to go through them all and see how much depth and amazing games there are.
@get2sammyb in comment section on twitter, Mat Piscatella said Uncharted 4 is at number 6...
@MarcG420 What metrics are you using to judge the XSX reveal as bad, let alone as bad as the Xbone reveal?.
@Richnj the most important ones in my opinion public perception and media engagement (as in marketing material views etc... I.e. reveal video views and likes and the such).
Really enjoy the top 2 and I have HZD but I still need to play it and while I agree that this games are amazing I think this generation lack more exclusive games compared to previous generation
@MarcG420 The XSX reveal trailer has decent views and feedback, and it's much higher than that of the Xbox One from what I can see. And the Xbox One reveal didn't back fire until the full presentation that revealed the 'always online' requirement.
So it's not the reveal trailers you're talking about. Which is it?
@Richnj so just ignoring public perception then? And the fact that playstation’s user engagement on their media is much, much higher after less time?
the list is based on total dollar revenue, not number of copies. uncharted 4 launched in mid-2016 when the number of PS4s was probably about 10m less than when most of the other games launched.. so a much smaller base to get those initial $60 sales for the first couple of months.
NPD also includes digital sales..so if digital % has been growing year on year, which are more likely to be full price sales, than discounted store promotions, stands to reason massive newer releases are top of the list. i'd expect TLoU2 to reach number 2 before the end of the year.
@MarcG420 I'm not ignoring it, I was asking you which public perception you were using to judge interest. Which you seem to be struggling to pinpoint.
So you're using PS5's record breaking twitter likes as proof that the XSX reveal has been as bad as the anti-consumer always online reveal of the Xbone?
@Richnj it’s not possible to pinpoint “buzz” and excitement which is sorely lacking for Xbox.
Edit: in fact the best way to get a sense of the buzz and excitement would be the media engagement levels which is much higher for Sony’s next gen machine.
@MarcG420 So your claims are;
It's not possible to pinpoint buzz
The best way to pinpoint buzz is social media
Spencer is messing up the XSX launch as bad as the Xbone launch because PS had record breaking social media buzz
Is this correct?
@Richnj it’s my opinion that this launch has been just as bad so far. Not my “claims”. Keyboard warrior much 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That’s my position.
Your position is you’re trying to make this launch seem like it’s been good for Microsoft?
Edit: on a side note, why do you feel the need to assert your overly aggressive and argumentative presence in a conversation that had nothing to do with you?
@MarcG420 It's an open forum, if you don't want challenging on things you say don't post them in public.
Also, claims, opinions, you stated the XSX launch was just as bad as the Xbone one, but couldn't say why. That's your problem.
I'm not trying to make the XSX launch seem good. I was just countering your 'opinion' that it was just as bad as the Xbone one. As I've stated, the Xbone reveals had some very messy backlash, none of which currently exists with the XSX. You'd have to be bias not to recognise that.
@Richnj ok got it:
Xbox series x launch so far = bad but not as bad as the Xbox one
Is your position.
I don’t need a reason to back up my opinion, nobody does. So, no problem. Well to anyone but you apparently.
@MarcG420 My position is that the XSX hasn't launched, so I couldn't tell you whether it's been a good one or not.
I'm not sure you understand opinions. Or logical fallacies if I'm honest.
"Xbox is uninteresting" is an opinion.
"Phil Spencer is messing up the XSX launch as bad as the Xbone launch", and "Xbox and PS reveal video views and likes prove Phil Spencer is messing up the launch" (obviously paraphrased) are statements.
The former is based on feeling, the latter examples are based on data, which you've tried to use to justify your feelings. The arguments you've made are equivalent to to saying the Earth is flat, then when asked why you think that, you've pointed to all the YouTube videos on the subject as evidence, then when pushed, just decided it was your opinion and you're allowed to have that opinion without being asked for reasons why.
It's a weird way to form and defend your opinion.
@Richnj 🤣🤣
Whatever you say Don Quixote.
Really happy FF7R is on that list, although I'm a bit shocked it has apparently outsold Uncharted 4. It must have done really well, which isn't necessarily a given considering the niche genre it's in.
Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War MADE this generation great for me.
Their sequels will do even better
@Arugula If you don't mind me asking, why haven't you? It's a fairly short game and even getting the platinum didnt take over 14 hours.
I'd like to see some actual numbers for this, 3 of those were easy to guess, horizon being on there is shocking (although I personally have been recommending it to everybody on the fence about it). And FF7 is although not shocking, still a surprise considering at one point uncharted 4 used to be the top game.
@Arugula It came in a bundle with the PS4 I bought. I’ve still never played it yet and I play a lot of PS4. 🤷🏻♂️ One of my sons says it’s fantastic though.
@Arugula I can understand that, it’s currently happeneing to me with the last of us. Okay was the thing that made you lose interest in the game anything to do with vlogger screwball? Because that is absolutely the worst thing in the game to me and is very much involved in all the city that sleeps dlc.
@naloD I think TLOU2 wouldn’t of been so bad story wise if you hadn’t played the first game (Say just released it on Xbox instead. Probably end up game of the year on that platform) and had no feelings towards certain characters. Even halfway through the game they go all walking dead again and remove more liked characters. I’ve never played it since. Because of spoilers I’ve a rough idea what happens at the end and even that annoys me enough to not start playing again. It is a great game too gameplay wise. I’m just as confused as a lot of people why they thought killing everyone likeable in the game and not letting you ultimately get revenge should you want to was a winning strategy. After this game I’m not even convinced I’d buy Naughty dogs next game. Forcing me to play as someone I hate still annoys me thinking about it 😂
I've played every game on that list now except for The Last of Us: Part II.
Hopefully it drops to $30 or less by Black Friday/Christmas so I can play it.
