Fresh from its record-breaking single player success, Ghost of Tsushima will enter the realm of online co-op later this year, as Sucker Punch refreshes the open worlder with a free update. Announced on the PlayStation Blog, the all-new Ghost of Tsushima: Legends mode will whisk up to four players away to fantastical locations inspired by Japanese folk tales and mythology, with an “emphasis on cooperative combat and action”.

“We designed Legends to be an exclusively cooperative gameplay experience,” explained senior game designer Darren Bridges. “You’ll be able to partner up with friends or via online matchmaking and play Legends in groups of 2-4 players. Each player can choose from one of four different character classes: the Samurai, Hunter, Ronin, or Assassin. Each class has unique advantages and abilities that we’ll reveal in the future.”

Those of you who just want to pair up will be able to tackle story missions that escalate in difficulty and build “on the foundation of combat from the single player campaign but with new magical twists that often require careful synchronisation with your partner”. Meanwhile, four players will be able to tackle waves-based survival challenges, “fighting groups of the toughest enemies Tsushima has to offer, including new Oni enemies with supernatural abilities”.

And that’s not all: there’ll also be a four-player Raid which will follow shortly after the release of Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, “sending you and your partners to an entirely new realm to challenge a brutal, terrifying enemy”. It sounds like there’s going to be tons of character customisation options, all of which will be revealed closer to release. For now, though, rest assured that there’s lots to look forward to in Tsushima later this year.
