Fresh from its record-breaking single player success, Ghost of Tsushima will enter the realm of online co-op later this year, as Sucker Punch refreshes the open worlder with a free update. Announced on the PlayStation Blog, the all-new Ghost of Tsushima: Legends mode will whisk up to four players away to fantastical locations inspired by Japanese folk tales and mythology, with an “emphasis on cooperative combat and action”.
“We designed Legends to be an exclusively cooperative gameplay experience,” explained senior game designer Darren Bridges. “You’ll be able to partner up with friends or via online matchmaking and play Legends in groups of 2-4 players. Each player can choose from one of four different character classes: the Samurai, Hunter, Ronin, or Assassin. Each class has unique advantages and abilities that we’ll reveal in the future.”
Those of you who just want to pair up will be able to tackle story missions that escalate in difficulty and build “on the foundation of combat from the single player campaign but with new magical twists that often require careful synchronisation with your partner”. Meanwhile, four players will be able to tackle waves-based survival challenges, “fighting groups of the toughest enemies Tsushima has to offer, including new Oni enemies with supernatural abilities”.
And that’s not all: there’ll also be a four-player Raid which will follow shortly after the release of Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, “sending you and your partners to an entirely new realm to challenge a brutal, terrifying enemy”. It sounds like there’s going to be tons of character customisation options, all of which will be revealed closer to release. For now, though, rest assured that there’s lots to look forward to in Tsushima later this year.

This is unexpected! And AWESOME!
This just reminds me of FFXV’s Comrades. Remember that?
Could be interesting, I'll give it a go when it comes
eh whatever,not for me.
I don't know SP can do this, it's super cool to add multiplayer to single player only games like this 😃
Can we play this with one player only?
Edit: I think this is ps5 version, sony will launch this with ps5 as ghost of tsushima complete edition with ps5 enchancement like 4K/60 fps graphics and fast loading time (of course it's free for ps4 owners).
I’m so freaking hyped for this. I still wanted more to play in this game after I platinumed it and I’m getting that wish! AWESOME!!
Well this is a surprise...awesome!
@wiiware nope it's forced coop.
I'm saving this game for PS5, so extremely excited to play it.
Holy crap, awesome! Did not expect and multiplayer!
@wiiware Sounds like you need two players at least.
Crazy that Sucker Punch is releasing this as a free update, and it sounds like a ton of fun.
Caption under the title should've read: Ghosts of Tsushima. #JustSayin
Cool. Not my thing though.
I'll be that guy: No. Just. No.
@Akurusu ironic.
Oni?
Please no. It is not with compliance to game's more realistic focused setting.
But I understand Sony - they want their GTA online.
All I want is optional download of this part of the game, so it wouldn't overburden my future to be SSD of PS5 with unnecessary data.
Awesome news
@TheIdleCritic pretend you didn't read it. It would be best for you, I guarantee.
@wiiware You could take a leaf out of @themcnoisy playbook and recruit people on the forums when the time comes. @ me if you do.
Developers provide owners of this game with a new and FREE game mode.
Some owners whine about it.
Probably the same players that moan that Factions MP isn't available with TLoU 2 from the very start, which is coming but as a standalone so you'll have to pay extra for it.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: some gamers aren't happy unless they've got something to cry about. It's got to the stage where I even wonder if these same people might be happier taking up a new hobby.
It would certainly make this site and others a brighter and more positive place.
😉
Tsushima, Tsushima, Tushima! That's what I call giving value to the customers!
@PretendWorking I never said that. I am simply expressing my own personal lack of desire for it.
I don't think this game should have anything added to it. The experience was already perfect.
@GamingFan4Lyf It's free and doesn't change any of the story so don't complain.
Really cool of sucker punch to add this, though personally prefer the grounded historical over the mystical.
I would absolutely be in on a single player kwaidan like expansion.
Very cool of them to do! I shouldn't be surprised by now by people complaining about FREE/OPTIONAL things being added but once again I am lol.
Still haven't fired this up yet but looking forward to eventually trying out this mode as well!
@get2sammyb @jdv95 Oh ok.
@Ryall Maybe I'll try this if there's ps5 upgrade, I think I'm spending too much time on this game, on the first island (before rescuing lord shimura) I spend like 50+ hours finishing all the sidequest lol. Just starting on the second island.
@TheIdleCritic yeah, it's baffling. It's optional, play the MP or not it's entirely up to the individual. It's not often developers give away extra content for free so why moan about it?!
😂😂😂
It's really wonderful of Sucker Punch to do this for free huge kudos but i'd rather they work on new game+ instead
I personally won't play it but I'm happy is there for those that do, I don't see how free added content to a game can be viewed as negative 😐
Is kinda great to still see developers give meaty update for free especially in a world where we have to pay money for a damn hat.
@naruball It’s true though.
@Nepp67 @TheIdleCritic I realize it doesn't change the base game and I realize that it's free. Sorry if I still don't like it and I express that I don't like it.
Next time, I promise to give in to the hivemind.
Here is why I don't like it: Sucker Punch put a lot of time and research into crafting this beautifully written story about war, loss, revenge, responsibility, and finding peace. It was unique in that the violence was countered with peaceful moments and sprawling vistas.
Now the developer goes and adds this mode that focuses solely on the violence in some supernatural Japanese Silent Hill realm of Tsushima. It's the equivalent of turning the greatest novel ever created into a Pulp Comic Book.
Well, I got the Platinum and have 100% on collectables. Was thinking of selling it on, but guess I'll keep hold of it. Especially as 2 friends also bought it, and one said it would be cool if there was co-op since we all had it.
My long-term interest in this is going to almost exclusively depend on what the monetization is going to be like. I'm sure it will be fun, but my tolerance for live service crap regardless of whether it's free or not is at an all-time low.
AMAZING. this game is golden and this only further establishs itself as one of the best for PS4. great news
Brilliant idea. I am very interested in giving this a try. Hopefully get a Push Square clan going!
@Akurusu sure, buddy.
@GamingFan4Lyf And yet again it doesn't change the story or Jin's story at all. It's just there for fun.
Ill take that, Thank you very much. Probably be micro transanctions but i dont care either way.
How dare Sucker Punch give us free stuff.
Shame!
Shame!
Shame!
@Blacksmith1985 Come on, at one point you fight someone inside a whirlwind of crows in pursuit of a cursed blade. You also get led by foxes to fox shrines. And you get charms relayed to Shinto gods that do actually power Jin up rather than being useless pieces of wood as it would be in reality. Various shrines have magic effects when you bow to them. Your flute changes the weather and you can make the wind blow towards where you want to go next. It's not exactly realistic. Nor is it particularly historically accurate since katana and haiku didn't exist then, for example.
Oh hell yes!! I love co-op!
@Nepp67 and yet, again, I still don't like it. Doesn't hurt you or the release of this free DLC.
I am free to disagree with it (for reasons I already explained) just as everyone else is free to like this.
I am not arguing with people for liking it, so why argue with me disliking it? I simply stated that I don't like it. I just won't play it, and that's fine.
Excuse me for disagreeing with everyone else. It won't happen again. I forgot that disagreeing with others opinion is banned in this world.
@GamingFan4Lyf Whatever bud, if you don't like it more power to you. No need to be an ass about it.
i started reading comments and expecting people getting hyped and do healthy discussion about how they will experience it with friends and more topics about how will the jobs in game plays and other interesting things to talk etc etc
instead i found some people complaining over this???
OMG people, what the F are you thinking?
if i dont like a game or anything, i wouldnt bother saying that stuff, its attracting unhealthy discussion. because thats just dumb.
Take-two, Square Enix & 505: Freewhat now? (Spits coffee out)
Sucker Punch are the heroes
@Nepp67 I am not trying to be mean about it, but I equate it to this:
If I am somewhere and I got a free lunch and that free lunch turned out to be egg salad (I think eggs taste vile), I am going to say "no". Suddenly everyone around me starts to get on me for saying "no" to a free lunch - even though I don't get on anyone else for eating it.
@Kefka2589 No, I like that kind of stuff, but this feels...out of place for the game itself. It's like when Metal Gear Survive was announced. It was just...oddly out of place.
I don't even care that an MP mode is added, but fit it into the context of the main game somehow.
Wow. Sounds cool.
Awesome!
So finally a mp worth playing until Factions 2 (probably)
But will we be able to carry over cosmetic costumes over to main game?
Mehhh, Not for me. Personally I would prefer their time and effort went on expanding the SP game but hey, sure many will be happy with this news
@RBMango they have said there will definitely not be any microtransactions every thing unlocks through gameplay. Push square just posted an article about it
@TribalRivals they have confirmed no microtransactions at all
Imagine spending 70 euros on a game that comes packed with content and then getting a free multiplayer mode to add even more content...crazy!
Wow, wasn't expecting this. Looking forward to it. Hope it's good.
I think they will find a clever way to introduce MP. Just like everything in the game fit so well, I would expect to MP to as well. I'm super surprised by this announcement. Usually companies try to get more cash out of you, but they are bringing practically a new game. This is really cool.
I'm pretty excited to kill Mongols with my friends
Are people on here seriously whining about this? Jesus christ its like the majority of people who comment here are either children or manbabies. This is free stuff so if you don't want don't play it, me i'm excited about this because it sounds pretty awesome.
Great news. Looks from another world ...I look forward to it. Will be as good as the single player.
×inserts comment complaining about people complaining about but not really complaining here×
Seriously it's great. But Not for everyone understandably so too. 🤷♂️
I'm really enjoying GoT, currently in Act 2, my personal game of the year so far. Not much of a multiplayer person usually (Fall Guys is the rare exception) but you can't really complain about having extra free stuff added to the game. Although its surprising there are no micro transactions, seems like the perfect excuse to sell some shiny hats.
Maybe this supernatural element could form part of a future single player standalone expansion on PS5, Sucker Punch have done something similar previously (First Light, Festival of Blood).
I've just got the plat for this and I'm usually not one for co-op as I don't play well enough. However, I'm willing to give this a go. I hope you can carry over powers you got and obviously my Sly Cooper costume of course.
They deleted my comment because I said something truthful & inoffensive.
@Sevenifity it's to be expected, though. Negative people who are not happy with their life will always find something negative to say about anything, including video games. They simply can't help it.
