Update: We've finally got a press release from Warner Bros, confirming that Gotham Knights will release on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 in 2021. It's described as a "third-person action RPG" in the documentation. As teased during the DC FanDome event, you'll work from the Belfry as your hub of operations, solving "mysteries that connect the darkest chapters in the city's history and defeating notorious villains in epic confrontations".
We suppose anything Marvel can do, DC Comics can, y’know, do too! As promised, Warner Bros Montreal has pulled back the cowl on its hotly anticipated Gotham Knights project, which sees Bruce Wayne incapacitated and his gang of sidekicks thrust into the spotlight. This is a drop-in/drop-out co-op experience which can be played solo or in two-player, where you’ll assume the roles of Robin, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Batgirl.
In the first gameplay footage embedded below, we see Batgirl attend an incident by bike. It turns out that Mr Freeze wants Gotham City to take an ice bath, and so she pairs up with Robin – controlled by another player – to take him out. The gameplay looks similar in many ways to the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers, you’ll earn XP, level up, and make each character your own.
The combat ditches the classic Batman: Arkham formula, adopting a more character action style instead. While it does look extremely pretty, our guess is that this will release on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, as it doesn’t look fully next-gen to our untrained eyes. We’ll update when we learn more, but for now know that this is coming out in 2021.

Pretty disappointing at first glance tbh, not really what I was hoping for.
it's not a batman game. only mechanics of batman gameplay with RPG, online.. i hate what i just saw
Sold! Looks great, so many superhero games coming out!!!
Oh for f**k sake. Well that’s a major disappointment. Another bloody live service.
I think it looks decent, and this slice seems a step up from Marvel's Avengers to me. However it hasn't really blown me away yet.
I wonder if Suicide Squad is going to be much the same sort of thing.
From what little they said it doesn't look like it's as service focused as the Avengers though, but more like a campaign with co-op and some rpg elements.
It looked fine!
>DC Comics' Response to Marvel's Avengers
There's no need for that.
But whatever, i will pass, just like i will pass from M. Avengers.
Pass! This looks generic asf. Now let me guess Suicide Squad will be another generic co-op experience 🙄
This felt nothing like Avengers, where Iron Man flies at a grandpa's pace (really scared with how they'll handle Spidey). That being said, I'm not feeling much for this game either. And what can I say about my feelings for Suicide Squad. Let's just say Rocksteady have a big mountain to climb. Hope these games are somehow connected. That would be pretty dope.
It looks decent, but I need to know more about it. If it's another Destiny style forever-game, I'm not interested. Hopefully it's something more straightforward!
Yeah I think it looks great. The time is right for another batman game (even without him) I’d happily play this
I'm not sold on it the combat still looks great but I worry it'll be stacked with microtransactions
@Mhoney Just chatting with @LiamCroft and @Quintumply and we reckon Batman will be a playable character in this at some point.
It looks better than Avengers, to be honest.
Ok the more Super Hero games the better!
@get2sammyb The real question is how much Batman will cost.
Looks more polished than Avengers for what it's worth.
@get2sammyb So you all the think the cinematic claiming he's dead is a red herring as well.
No continuation from the Arkham games, that's ok I understand that.. but it looks like an live service game.. Another. one.. Why? It gives it a cheap look with the numbers above the enemies head. The uninspired dialoge.. Disappointed so far.
Also they are working on this for 5 years right? Numerous teases leading up to this.. Maybe I was expecting to much.
Do you guys think the Rocksteady game will have links to the Arkham Universe? Origins ended with a sort of tease right?
Looks really good! Btw, I fully expect Batman to show up at the end of the game, or hinted at for a comeback in the next Arkham title.
FINALLY
PLAYABLE NIGHTWING AND RED HOOD
SIGN ME THE HELL UP
As someone who never really played the batman games it think it looks fun. It’ll be nice having a co-op game for me and my wife to play since she loves Batman and DC
@get2sammyb yeah I think that’s a good shout. Batman is just too much of a cash cow. I would imagine he will be in the game in some role. I would bet money there will be batman games after this.
Just look at how many batman films there are and how they keep on making them.
Everytime I see a game with x4 characters as a team I now know it's instantly going to suck.
Well at least we still have Arkham Knight on PS4, which looks and runs amazing on PS4 Pro with boost mode
I think the game art looks good and the gameplay looks better than CD avengers, and unlike avengers this game is not a gaas game, it's only for single or 2 players.
Interesting. Curious to see more in the future.
Don't like the quips and "humour," and I best be able to turn off those bloody damage counters. Other than that, sold.
Some day someone is going to make a co-op TMNT game in the style of the Arkham games, and it’s going to be epic.
As a fan of the Rocksteady Batman games, this looks legit!
Marvel has the better movies. DC has the better videogames.
Looks a little more polished than Avengers but that's barely a compliment. I will wait for actual gameplay to make my mind up but as of now is in the no pile along with Avengers.
I really wanted a Arkham type single player game 😟
Yay another live service game....
At least its solo play and drop in/drop out coop but definitely not the game i was hoping for. Especially adter being bored by the avengers beta
Also gow much do you want to bet either Batmans alive or Joker is behind the Court of Owls
Bit weird that it hints of a continuation of the Arkham games yet Barbara Gordon is walking?
Also I don't think these mechanics needed RPG elements in it, Arkham's combat was fine without it.
@ThaBEN
marvel spiderman> Arkham Ciy.
MVC series >iNJUSTICE series.
just a take.
@AdamNovice I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be set in the Arkham universe, all the character designs are way different, so is the gameplay. This is it's own thing.
@rachetmarvel He probably meant the amount of good Marvel games vs all the DC games in which case he is right. There's only really one good Marvel single player game, before Spidey PS4 was Spider-Man 2 in 2004 😅
Looks like old-fashioned uncomplicated fun in the DC Gotham Universe.
Certainly not what I hoped. I’m fine not playing as Batman for the whole game. I like the idea of playing as the Bat family members. What I don’t like is the co-op live service that will be filled with micro transactions. The rpg damage counters look stupid and the fight music was horrible. I wanted an exclusively single player game. I know you can play this solo, but my bet is that the company’s main focus is on multiplayer.
@FlashBandit If that's the case then it's a bit odd for them to use the end of Arkham Knight as the jumping off point.
This actually looks really good.definetly interested in this.its about time robin got his own game also.word up son
@AdamNovice Sort of. The end of Arkham Knight hints that maybe Bruce and Alfred both died, but in the gameplay here we see Alfred talking to Batgirl so it seems like it's a different take on it. The whole idea of Batman dying (or keeping it open if he is dead or not) is something that is quite common, even the Nolan movies play with that.
Why Couldn't They Have Made a Justice League Green Lantern Corps Or Even a Flash Famliy Game As I'am Tired Of DC Overuseing The Bat Family For Everything.
There's no competition.
Ghotam Knights looks like an actual campaign.
This'll looks better for me than the Avengers one, but I'm still unsure about it. If the single player campaign is good instead of going down the live service route, then it could be quite an enjoyable game.
@rachetmarvel
Oh shoot, how could I forget those. Spider-Man is one of my favourites! And I agree MVC is fantastic, but Injustice is no slouch either.
But in general speaking, seems to me there are more good DC games then Marvel games.
Really don't have anything original to say. Looks very mundane. I'll just replay Arkham City for the billionth time.
👍 Not more rehash old games 👍... Being new and for PS5 is already a Win. Now see if it turns out Ok.
Co-op is a plus in my book. Play some BatMan with my Brother in NC at night
Not sure what to make of this tbh but would have preferred a Batman centric game.
Guess i'm the only one who's excited for it haha xd
About 1% more interested than in Avengers, so in total 1% interest.
Jesus Christ.... everyone is headed down the live service route... the next video game industry crash is surely upon us at this rate....
Will the Joker be in this game?
People getting very worked up about this it seems. It looks a decent game, albeit nothing original! If you don't like it, dont buy it. Go play your PS2 remasters and imagine your 16 again. Times change and so do games, Live service is the "in" thing right now, but aslong as people keep buying those kind of games they'll keep making them.
Oof, definitely not what I was expecting... Doesn't look bad though, might grow on me over time, will definitely be keeping an eye on it.
Not seeing the reason for all the hate, it looks fantastic. Literally looks like the Arkham games but with other characters. I fully support this because I'm tired of always playing as Batman and there are soooo many characters they could make work in a video game.
@RawnDawn
I'm excited as well just for the simple fact it's Rocksteady. Gotta say though, it does look more like an expansion for Arkham Night then a totally new game.
Not sold on the RPG levelling aspect, but going to give it the benefit of the doubt for now.
Edit
I feel so stupid. This is not a Rocksteady game. Forget Arkham Knights, this is the the game I'm looking for: https://youtu.be/V1p7nWylfNs
Well... hopefully Rocksteady shows us something better.
Why the negativity? This looks great!
No thanks, doesn’t interest me.
@FlashBandit Oh yeah I know that, I guess I was looking at it from an Arkham game too much.
Looks like Rocksteadys Gotham of old which is a tad disappointing. But it is in Gotham so I guess what can you do. Bat Girl looks ace as do the rest and it looks as though the fight style is totally revamped. Superman would have made all the difference to this game imo.
Having seen the gameplay footage, I really hope they fix the physics of Batgirls hair. That looked really bad.
But all in all this looks promising.
Looks better than the Avengers game for a start, can't help but feel I'd much rather play as Batman though and do we really need these types of RPG mechanics in a Batman game, they just don't make any sense and seeing the enemy level numbers through floors is just ridiculous
Surprised how devisive this has been. I think it looks pretty cool and great for the reveal to be a proper gameplay reveal rather than CGI nonsense. Look forward to seeing more.
I don’t think this is a response to Marvel’s Avengers. This is not a GaaS. The game looks really good. It’s a single player with a co-op option. I love the art style of this game, and the game looks very promising. I’m so in.
As a big fan of the arkham games this was not what I was hoping. Graphics look good but gameplay looks weak to me and I would be really really surprised if this doesn't have micro transactions. I have to see a lot of good reviews to even buy this. Deffenitly not a pre-order for me
This looks better than Avengers. I really hope each character has something to add to the team. In Avengers, it feels like everyone just beats goons up differently. Plus this one seems to have a stronger story on its shoulders.
Hm, it seems so dumb. I have no idea for what WB Montreal has changed battles and added some rpg elements but it’s so stupid. As result we’ll get another one service game instead good bat’s sequel, thank you very much. I think Warner bros has sensed itself like Ubisoft. But I think, it’s normal after last part of Mordor series with all of that orc recruiting etc.
Another live service game. Avengers played like absolute garbage and this will too. Honestly cannot see this obsession with developers going the route of destiny and the rest, completely ruining games. 100% suicide squad will be the single player game we crave, batman mechanics with the squad and justice League
Do we even know this is a "service" type of game like Avengers/Destiny, etc? Looks to me like a 2 player co op game.
@KingSimba I totally agree. Seems like people are jumping to conclusions and declaring this as a live service game. Nothing in that trailer indicated that.
This looks stupid. A totally unnecessary RPG aspect to extend playtime past its welcome. The character line-up looks petty meh outside of the red hood too, who probably won’t feel like he has guns compared to the other characters, even if he kills enemies like he should.
It should have been a straightforward linear game, but I don’t see the RPG elements doing any favors or helping the game in any meaningful way. I remember when RPGs were used right and not shoved in games for no reason.
As long as I can play solo and not faff about with online elements, sign me up. I loved the court of owls story arc in the comics!
@Jaz007 Red Hood looks the least interesting to me, actually. Robin and Batgirl are classic and Nightwing is super cool. Red Hood with his guns just seems out of place and derivative.
I liked it, I will probably get this day one. Also, is Batman really dead? I seriously doubt it.
This and the Avengers game get a solid "meh" from me. Generic games
@Sinton exactly. It still blows my mind that there is no ninja turtles game in the Arkham style.
Trash trash trash trash
Upon seeing the trailer I thought this could make for a nice story-focused game, one with a somewhat unique premise for a mainline Batman story, but now I know it's gonna be like the upcoming Avengers game, I'm decidedly less interested (even moreso than Avengers, since that game at least has a large and varied cast of characters who all have their own unique gameplay style).
@ThaBEN Nolan's The Dark Knight would like o have a word with you....
Is it always online? Is it liveservice i would love to know more.
Since it it is live service I hope they plan to add other Bat Family characters like Red Robin (looks like Damien is Robin) leaving Tim out makes me sad or Batwoman or Huntress.
@get2sammyb You really not thinking that he will be the Talon at the end? This has got "Arkham Knight is DEFINITELY NOT Jason Todd - Wink" written all over it.
Having said that, looks good. Don't like the forced humour and quips, and the damage counters are awful, but looks good other than that.
This is such a dumb article, People need to stop pitting marvel and Dc against each other they're not in competition because majority of us will play both. Looking at some of the comments and face palming. 1 Bruce Wayne ain't the only batman Both Dick and Damien have had the mantal, 2 this is a standard story land were batman fakes his death for various reasons, including one in the court of This had Damien, Kate and luke fox instead of Tim and Jason this would be Batman :Badblood. One of the most common requests after Arkham Knights was coop mode with this game had in spades. Why I am genuinely excited for this game it add variety and diverse game play. Combat various from characters to character. Let's face it we've had both batman and superman entertainment dominate media in the last 3 decades, it's refreshing to finally have a action adventure with rpg components and story with some other characters with the potential for adding other batfamily characters like the huntress, spoiler, black bat, Damien, if they want some much need diversity they have batwing luke fox and Robin/the signal Duke Thomas who would also add some great game play. Please hire someone to do articles who can actually write a article talking about the game play aspect instead of a comparison to get clicks to pit to game agasint each other leading to this toxic environment were sheep are loyal instead of enjoy both games on their own merit.
Looks great, clearly still a work in progress that's also designed for last gen consoles. Loved the gameplay, which to me looks WAY better in pre-alpha than Marvel's Avengers (which is a few weeks from launch).
Definitely getting this day one.
Gameplay looks miles ahead of the Avengers, which is a shame as I'm much more of a Marvel fan generally. Wouldn't normally have much interest in this but have to admit the trailer was great.
Too early to tell but I'm more of a DC guy so I'm more likely to buy this than Avengers. Still, the gameplay looks a little generic. Kinda gives me DCUO vibes.
And am I the only one who thinks the character faces look kinda wack in the cinematics?
I'm definitely interested in playing, here's hoping for a Summer 2020 release window!
@FlashBandit If thats true ill get it.
@AndyP That May be the case but in the end Bruce Wayne will always be the main Batman. If you ask the most people they will see Bruce Wayne as Batman. They can dress like Batman but it wont be the real deal. Dick never wants too be Batman its not like he had choice.
