Streaming is an absolutely massive pastime for many gamers these days, and Sony recognises that. The new HD Camera for PlayStation 5 is being marketed specifically at content creators who want to broadcast their gameplay on sites like YouTube and Twitch, and in addition to offering a crystal clear 1080p video feed of your face, it’ll also offer some nifty tools.
Chief among these is a background removal application that will allow you to either crop your camera or utilise a green screen to remove it entirely. “Featuring dual lenses for 1080p capture and a built-in stand, the HD camera works seamlessly with the PS5 console’s background removal tools to put you in the spotlight,” reads the official PlayStation website.

I’d like to see compatibility with something like zoom to make video calls. I think that would be a big plus for the majority of people who don’t stream.
That's a really good feature!
If they will continue to allow developers to block streaming due to what they feel might be a spoiler, doubt any serious streamer will use the built in streaming anyways and just continue to hook up a capture device in between their consoles and TVs.
Nice. I was expecting them to add some extra tools for streamers. This is excellent.
@Robinsad Those people could get a PC webcam that has had these features for several years and cost less. No need to get the PS5 camera for 99% of people. Other than streaming, I imagine there will be 2-3 games that use it.
@Menchi of course I could have a webcam, but the recent pandemic has really limited how frequently my kids could see the family. We have been able to make do with video calls on phones and tablets but I have a camera basically connected to my tv right now whose only purpose is psvr. If I could have used that to make calls on my tv it would have been a huge benefit. Facebook have made a business of it with portal.
Stop catering for streamers and hopefully they will go away. It is one of the few stable jobs at the moment though. Well that and healthcare professionals so you all just crack on.
I use walkthrough videos but if they have someone talking over it with their fake shock and awe in the corner I have to turn it off. That's just me. I am sure I am in the minority.
Streaming games from the PS4 is so limiting even if they add a few features on the PS5 everyone who is even partly interested in streaming will get an elgato
It will always be better to off load stream processing for those that are serious about it but having easy to use built in capability is a good thing for those on lower budgets, just starting out or just having fun. It's a feature that will be totally unused by most but really appreciated by those who do use it. Great addition
@Enigk I'm not a fan at all but my teenage kids are all over it. I'm happy for those that find things to enjoy in general but I could really do with not having to listen to the kids going on and on about this streamer or that. But I'm just an old man shouting at clouds at this point.
@Enigk I personally like that streamers exist, even if i dont follow any actively. Most genuine way of finding out how a game actually play, without downloading a bulky demo, is just to go online and hop into the middle of a handful of active streams. I get a lot more genuine representation of the game there than from almost all reviews, and definitively better than all marketing material.
@TooBarFoo I'm definitely an old man. My friend was saying his son would rather watch Youtubers babble on rather than watch a scripted movie or TV show or play the actual game the person is playing rather than watching them talk over it It's clearly an age thing.
@Tharsman I prefer to read information. Can't even watch documentaries anymore as I can read about the same thing on the internet in a few minutes. Used to watch loads as a teenager. I haven't got time to listen to people dissect things. As for games, 2 minutes for a trailer and a 2 minute review scan and I am buying or not buying. It's OK if you have the time. Getting older I now understand time is finite.
Currently typing this and walking the dog. Everyone knows the best use of their time
Game streaming is multi million dollar market at this point so only makes sense to cater to it.
I myself rarely watch someone play a game unless i am stuck in a certain section but i know kids that know jacksepticeye and pewdiepie more than they do real life hollywood actors.
2020 yall
@Enigk 2 minutes of actual gameplay are a lot more meaningful than 2 minutes of marketing, selectively cut, trailers.
I don’t sit there watching someone play a game for hours. A minute here and there are more than enough.
@Tharsman Fair enough. To be honest, if I have seen an older game on sale I have scanned through an online video review for a minute or two to see if it is worth it. As long as it doesn't have someone lurking in the corner feigning surprise.
One of the best channels I've found was the 'Survival Horror Network'. No self cam, no commentary. Just all gameplay.
Great feature. Will be streaming my new gaming vlog on ps5 fo shizzle.
