Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition (phew!) is coming to PS4 on the 4th December 2020, but what's new in this re-release? The game's latest trailer, fresh from Tokyo Game Show 2020, has everything you need to know.
As the name implies, it's set to be the definitive version of Dragon Quest XI — an already phenomenal JRPG, as far as we're concerned. However, it hasn't been smooth sailing for this re-release when it comes to PlayStation players.
There was a bit of a backlash following the game's announcement earlier this year, when Square Enix confirmed that Dragon Quest XI S on PS4 would essentially be a port of the graphically inferior Nintendo Switch version. What's more, existing Dragon Quest XI owners won't be able to upgrade to Dragon Quest XI S — it's a re-release through and through. But hey, at least it's not full price... Right?

The orchestral arrangements are a massive plus. I thought the midi music felt super out of place given how modern and polished the rest of the presentation looked in comparison. Bringing over the 2D overhead mode from the JP-exclusive 3DS version was also super neat. It's not even like a cute little distraction either; they actually designed the maps in the game to be played properly all the way through in that mode as well.
Had this game not gone multiplatform I'd probably rank it alongside Astral Chain as my favorite Switch third-party exclusive but it's great that players on PS4, PC and even Xbox are getting to experience easily the best version of the game
@TheFrenchiestFry yeah its great ps4 players can play this, unless you already paid full price for original release. Im not buying it and i loved the game.
@ellsworth004 I'm personally not getting it again either since I got DQXI S on Switch and the multiplat version is practically the same exact game, but it's really cool that the other consoles are getting this game as well.
Genuinely did not expect this to come to Xbox so it's a slight step in getting that brand to appeal to the Japanese market since Dragon Quest is monolithic there.
I want dragon quest 11 with the graphics from ps4 and the music from switch 😕
The Switch version is still the definitive version.
I've already played it on my Switch but I now wish I'd waited for this one. That said, most of the game is identical. Most but not all your party members get like a little solo episode at the end of Act 1 and there's an entirely forgettable and kind of tedious series of fetch quests set in 1 or 2 screens of previous DQs rendered in a 16-bit style. Apart from that, now you can marry more people at the end rather than just Gemma but IIRC you don't even see the wedding.
Fantastic game. I will probably buy this again with the all the extra stuff but not at full price.
So does it actually look worse than the original PS4 version? Probably need to wait for the Digital Foundry comparison.
@badbob001 It's meant to be a direct port of the Nintendo Switch version of DQXI S, so it will look marginally worse, but that being said the game looked pretty great on Switch imo
i waited for this version until i heard it is based on the poor switch port. s-e has no excuse for this... and i have no reason to buy it any longer.
@badbob001 The environmental textures and character models aren't as detailed as the original PS4 version, because they had to be toned down for the Switch. This version, on a base graphical level, is a Switch port.
But the resolution will be better than it was on Switch, so ultimately, the difference might not even be that noticeable.
@ShogunRok Assuming this game hasn't been released anywhere yet, are you able to confirm that the textures are the same as the switch version from just looking at the trailers? Or are we just assuming this because they said it's based on the Switch version? Seeing how users can just slap in a texture upgrade pack onto an emulated game, maybe updating or reusing the PS4 textures is not out of the question.
What a damn mess, why can you not just put all the switch exclusive extra, into the base ps4 version, then we do not need to sacrifice graphics.
@rachetmarvel The original and definitive versions ran on different iterations of Unreal Engine 4, the Switch version required a complete redo of a lot of the work, which is why it took 2 extra years to come out. I'm no game dev, but I imagine it requires a lot of work as opposed to just porting the Switch version back over to PS4.
Even if it weren’t the most boring game I ever managed to get the platinum for, this is lazy and overpriced. I guess the orchestral music could change the experience a lot - though - and it’s no full price e like P5 Royal but yeah graphic downgrade and all. No, thank you.
@badbob001 That information's from the official Japanese website. As far as we know, it's just the Switch version at a higher resolution. I guess we won't know the true details until the game is released, but that's all we have to go on right now.
Have it physically on the Switch. Looks great on the platform, especially when you consider the ARM-based CPU/GPU. But porting the same ARM-optimized game to the PS4, kinda lame Square.
It will max out at 720p (or maybe 1080p) on the PS4 and all those downgraded textures, reduced character geometry, not to mention pop-up will only magnify the Switches limitations. A hard pass for me.
@rachetmarvel The Switch version ran on a newer iteration of UE4. The reason that port took so long to happen was because the original game came out when UE4 didn't officially support Switch yet. The Switch version was originally intended to launch day and date in Japan with the PS4 and 3DS versions.
It was never going to be as simple as adding the content on top of the existing PS4 version, but I do at least wish it could've been discounted on PS4/PC for owners of the original release
@TheFrenchiestFry Well screw it,Dragons Quest was an ok jrpg anyway,so I will not lose sleep in knowing that I did not play the best version of it.
@TheFrenchiestFry
Porting something from ARM to x86 takes more than an official support of UE4 on the Switch.
They had to recreate CPU instructions to replicate the game logic, redo GPU draw calls, and account for different power profiles (7 to 18 Watts on the Switch). This port is incredible. It is running on vintage mobile hardware.
My only gripe is that I wish the game had a tad higher mobile resolution.
@MintPyton Yeah DQXI S is an extremely well done port. Probably the best RPG conversion on the system imo. I'd honestly recommend getting that version over the upcoming releases because the graphical oddities and sacrifices they made in getting that thing to run on a freaking 2013 Tegra X1 SoC will become significantly more pronounced on higher def TVs compared to the Switch's screen.
Wait, not even a paid upgrade for those of us with the original game? Awesome, they get zero money instead of $10 or something.
Played this on Switch, just came to say it's bloody brilliant.
The orchestral score is amazing, and was more than a very strange omission from the original release.
Enjoy.
Just realised this is a Dragon Quest trailer without the Dragon Quest theme!!! What is this madness
I have it on Switch and it’s bloody excellent.
Play it when it comes out so we keep getting Dragon Quest in the West.
It looks cool damn im getting it. 😆
Already own this on Switch, so I'll pass, but I'd definitely recommend this version to anyone who either hasn't played the game yet or is in the mood to revisit a modern classic of the genre. The graphical downgrades are there, and probably noticeable if you've played the original release, but, IMO, the 2D mode, vastly better music, extra story content, QoL upgrades, etc. make up for that. Anyway, it's still a beautiful game.
Looking forward to it. I've not played any version of DQ XI yet, so I'm planning on picking up this one.
@wiiware PC version is for you. Better visuals than PS4 and had the orchestral OST modded in day 1.
On topic, the extras of the S version are not worth getting the inferior experience the entire time.
@Akurusu It is definitive that it is the worst version of DQXIS, yes.
Opinions in general from anyone but Ralizah, as we've already discussed it before, but i already own the original pretty ps4(pro/5) version and this version on switch. Not sure which to play. The graphics difference is extreme to me, but so is the music... And i don't know how significant the additions and qol updates are. Anyone else that's played both have opinions if the improvements are worth losing the pro/5 4k graphics?
@NEStalgia the thing is the “2D version” mitigates the graphical issues on any hardware, and coupled with the better soundtrack, you can enjoy this game and not be bothered the “details”. However, I haven’t played the PS4 version, but have played the Switch version. So I don’t know if I count
Price doesn’t matter to me. It’s the fact that I have to choose between graphical quality and enhances features and music when from a technical perspective, we should be able to have both.
