Sony slipped a very brief God of War Ragnarok teaser trailer into its PS5 showcase. There isn't much to see here — just an icy God of War logo — but we do get to hear Kratos grumble some ominous words.
Surprisingly, God of War Ragnarok is aiming for a 2021 release date on PS5. We honestly thought it'd arrive later than that, but it means that Sony's next-gen console has one hell of a year ahead of it. Assuming the date sticks, of course.

That was a little underwhelming, still nice for a confirmation at least!
And on PS4 maybe.
Sooner than I expected!
Text my brother the announcement telling him he needs to finish God of War this winter to be ready for this next year.
Replied back saying "Damn I better"
next year is already insane : ratchet - horizon - AND GoW??? wow
You know, I was gonna get a PS5 anyway, but... damn.
@Haruki_NLI And that is freaking horrible.
Is this PS4 as well SonySoft?
I hope this is not PS4, hate cross gen titles.
God of War is a system seller for me. As long as it’s truly a next gen game I’m in.
Currently platinuming God of War (2018) and i am hyped! 2021 is shaping up to be an insane year of gaming.
Sony are seriously risking taking out all the air from the hype balloon right now. I hope they come forward and actually explain themselves cos I find it difficult to understand what their thinking is right now. Crossgen games, exclusives on PC, higher prices on games etc.
@AdamNovice *also coming to PC lol.
And it will be 70$ a game. Announced on Playstation Blog.
More game info not in show at Playstation Blog.
I think its PS4/PS5 and its God of War 1.5.
Kinda like Lost Legacy and Miles Morales
I can't wait. I'm gonna be mad if this on PS4 though. I doubt it will be. They need to get rid of moving through rubble, narrow spaces, pillars, and elavators to mask loading times. It will be a completely different game on PS5.
@Haruki_NLI surely not. If demon souls is PS5 only then there's no reason to panic and say all games will come to both.
@Jacko11 nope.
@AdamNovice
They started charging for online multiplayer in the wake of Microsoft's disastrous reveal of the Xbox One, and fans were so relieved Sony wasn't screwing up as much as Microsoft that the news didn't create too many waves. Maybe they thought they could get away with some more stuff this time around.
I don’t see it coming in 2021 if they don’t have anything to show yet. Announced the same way Metroid Prime 4 was... over 3 years ago.
God of War 2...for sure delayed two times, but will be good.
Real Release Early 2023.
@theMEGAniggle any proof to back up your defiant nope?
@Jacko11 it's not a nope I have proof, it's more of a nope I don't want to hear that right now and nope I don't want to believe.
@Jacko11 I think you are right. 2021 seems pretty quick for a full on God of War sequel.
@Jacko11 @Jslade Three years isn't long enough for a sequel? That's plenty of time. Not every game has to take 4-6 years. In fact, three years is longer than it used to be for sequels to come.
@Jaz007 I’m just putting a theory out of my opinion.
Spider-Man is getting a 1.5 and the original came out same year as God of War. It’s not completely out of the question but who knows 🤷🏻♂️
@Jacko11 - could happen. i was thinking the same thing when "ragnarok" came on screen. it never said "god of war" - just ragnarok with kratos voice.
It's going to be GOW 1.5 and it's perfectly fine.
@AFCC It was the same thing with PS3 when PS4 was brand new and it didn't stop PS4 from being a massive success. Most often then not, I ended buying both versions eventually, because the 60 fps 4k upgrades were too tempting.
Sony love for us to double dip or triple dip on buying their games. They are not going to stop.
Looking forward to this one, but my expectations of it coming 2021 are zero. Over the years, on every console reveal, Sony loves announcing games that dont show up until years later. Showing only a logo, not even a pre-rendered shot, makes me very dubious about the likeliness of this being anywhere near advanced development. Would love to be wrong, because the last game was very fun.
But who knows, maybe its not showing anything for the same reason Miles Morales didn't show anything: it was actually a PS4 game with extra whistles on PS5 all along.
2021 is going to be insane. GOW 2, Harry Potter RPG, Horizon 2, RE8, Ratchet and Clank, new batman game plus I'm sure there will be a few other great 3rd party games.
@Jacko11 I'm leaning towards it not being a 1.5, because iirc they've been teasing Ragnarok for a while.
This is a legit holy f**k moment for me when the 2021 titles come out, can’t wait for the game 😃
I’ll be shocked if it actually arrives on time, but I’m sooooooo f’ing excited I can’t handle it! This was the one confirmation that got me screaming for more!
Why only a logo if it's so late in development that it's releasing next year?
@Ralizah It'll get delayed I'm sure
"You must prepare yourself", we all know what that means.
@Ralizah Probably late next year, so still 12+ months away, possibly delayed to early 2022. It's something that could show up at the Game Awards or something like that.
@Jacko11 There was only 2-3 years between the Tomb Raider games. Death Stranding was made in 3 years from scratch! With a good management, you can do a lot in a short amount of time. If a developer spends 2-3 years messing around with prototypes and ideas, yeah it will take a lot longer. But if the team has a clear vision of what they want the game to be, it is very possible.
@Octane i’m aware that other titles have had quick turnarounds. I’m just speaking from a first party Sony perspective that I feel it could be a 1.5 game.
Not saying it isn’t. Not saying it is 100%. I’m saying I think it is, based on the quality, length of GoW 2018 and care taken. My opinion
@Jacko11 You'd think they would save the name "Ragnarok" for the actual sequel in that case. Because that's what the first game has been building up to.
@Peach64 don’t mention Metroid Prime 4 I’m trying to forget they even announced it! Lol
Seem to recall Corey Barlog mentioning a while back that they dropped dlc plans for GOW as they were getting too big,so presume that was the starting basis for GOW 2. Although they did surprise us with some of the cross-gen announcements,you think going all-out on a next gen version will definitely be a guaranteed system seller by the time it lands whenever that is.
@Holijay
This, haha. There's no way this is coming in 2021. I'm not sure I would want it to honestly, would probably be a rush job.
Damn, this teaser made me so happy I screamed in joy. I had forgotten just how much I had enjoyed playing the reboot.
Now we just need a PS4 or PS5 Collection of the older games, even if they're just remasters/ports instead of remakes.
