We already had a big PlayStation 25th anniversary party last year to coincide with the PS1’s launch in Japan, so there’s very little fanfare been reserved for the device’s United States debut. Despite that, 9th September was the release date for Sony’s first console in USA, and will no doubt hold special memories for some of you – although you may be dating yourself a teensy bit if you were there day one in 1995.
Of course, even the youngsters among you will have played a PS1 at some point in your lives, whether it was at a friend’s house or slipping in sneaky sessions on a sibling’s system. Launch games included Rayman and Battle Arena Toshinden, as well as the legendary Ridge Racer. The console retailed for $299, which was considered extraordinary value at the time, and sold over 800,000 units in the space of a few months.
Many had expected Sony to take the anniversary opportunity to announce new information about the PlayStation 5, but so far it’s been silent on social media – outside of some minor announcements which are attracting ire from an increasingly rabid fanbase. Of course, the platform holder put out a ton of content to celebrate the system’s true 25th anniversary last year, and if you’re feeling nostalgic you can find some of that through here.

Wake me up when it's the 29th of September 😜
And what better way to celebrate than letting your competitor steal the limelight in such a formiddable way... C'mon Sony.
But Happy Birthday, I went from Atari to Sega and then to Sony only skipping the PS3 gen, because life. Lots of fantastic gaming memories with hopefully lots more to come
Happy 25th Sony ps!!! Here's to another great 25 years of quality games!!! Hopefully we will get some ps5 news in the next few days, I'm guessing they will by the end of next week tbh, now that ms have released price and date. Hopefully Sony at least match the price if not under cut it 😀
@Royalblues, sorry to get ur hopes up, no the 29th is the 25th Anniversary for the European launch of PS1.
It’s quite incredible how many PS1 games I’ve played over the years despite never actually playing the system itself. The PS2 was just so useful for playing the games that I didn’t eat. RIP Sheep, that weird Winnie the Pooh game and Metal Gear Solid, you were tasty.
@gmxs People really need to chill.
Uh oh, get ready for some massive hissy fits and tantrums if Sony don't announce anything about the PS5 today.
I love my PC but the PS1 and PS2 will forever remain my favourite!!
Microsoft is tribute to PlayStation by saying our console is 299$ like yours first console. The irony 😂
I think you need to rename that title.
It doesn’t really appear that PlayStation is celebrating anything at the moment. I haven’t seen them even acknowledge it.
Would be nice if they let us download the music on the ps1 demo discs for free as backing music on the ps4. I played the sentient demo so many times.
Never owned that model, glad I waited 2 years and got the dualshock model. I can't go back and play games without sticks now. Maybe if I had gotten that earlier model, but I didn't.
I never had one and the only time I ever played one was at someone else's house where my older brother's friends destroyed me playing Twisted Metal. Pretty sure there was moderate to severe bullying involved as well so some fairly fond memories on the whole regarding the PS1.
In any case, I was PC gaming at the time.
Xbox series x just announced its price and release date. So, it is interesting to see how sony responds, since Xbox has now played there hands, and on ps anniversary.
Where's my 25 anniversary ps4 themes sony? The last one is pretty good 😃
@rachetmarvel I don't think sony will respond right away, they just won this game of console price chicken lol, so I think they're now planning the right strategy for launching ps5.
I had an N64, but my cousins had a PlayStation. I remember playing Crash Bandicoot, Tekken and Destruction Derby on it!
I swapped back and forth between the PlayStation and Nintendo 64 back in those days. Good times.
I didn't buy one day one, but the PS1 was given to me by my sisters friend that was spoiled and didn't want it, and thus started my Playstation addiction. I had the PS2 day one afterwards. I did deviate alittle when the 360 launch but came back at the tail end of PS3 and have been back on board ever since.
The reason why i still play video games is because of sony.i was a huge sega genesis fan.sony PlayStation took it to a another level.crash bandicoot and syphon filter was and still is my favorite ps1 games ever.man i miss the 1990s.1995 was a great year.word up son
I remember Christmas morning unwrapping the corner of a present and seeing the PS logo, I couldn't believe it! What a feeling! Awesome console and I still have it.
@playstation1995 Greatest decade of all
@antonygill2015. Definitely .the 1990s was incredible.word up son
299
I need to say something else
@gmxs Rumour was Sony HAD an announcement for today but it was shelved after Microsoft's info was leaked and stole the limelight. Sensible business really to wait a few days.
Considering I was 3 years old, sadly not. But I do own every console. Although not in the direct order.
loved this console so much great memories🙂👍
happy B-day..ps1 changed everything! anyone seen this documentary?

Wonder if there another opportunity to get hold of the limited edition PS1 PS4?
I entered all the competitions to win one!
I celebrated my 25th too 3 days ago.
You'd think a company that's proud of it's history would do more to preserve it's back catalogue, 25 years of incredible computer entainment and we can only play the last 6/7 years worth. Lets hope sony finally realizes backwards compatibility matters
Eh, today ? 😮
I got PS1 fat model when i was 14 years old on year 1998.
It was my first time know about DDR 3rd Mix, Magical Drop 3, Final Fantasy games, Punky Skunk, Bomberman games, etc.
Awsome i remember playing the tomb raider series , gta , loaded , resi , die hard trilogy and ffvii still play them today.
Happy Birthday to PlayStation 1 !
I'm slightly disappointed Sony hasn't made more of this. 25 years of PlayStation is a huge thing to celebrate.
