Marvel's Avengers is out now on PlayStation 4, but do you plan on buying a copy? We still remember the game's official reveal at E3 2019. It was a very muddy announcement, with Square Enix failing to tell us anything about how the title actually played. The Avengers themselves looked like knockoffs, and the mere mention of "no microtransactions" was more than enough to raise an eyebrow or two.
Shortly after the event, news broke that Marvel's Avengers was set to be a live service game, with loot and co-op and updates and free DLC. Naturally, there was a bit of a backlash with the excellent Marvel's Spider-Man still fresh in people's minds. A few shoddy showcases later, and it was starting to look like Marvel's Avengers was a bust.
But here we are with the game in our hands, and honestly, it's not bad. Fellow Push Square scribe Liam Croft has already written a massive Marvel's Avengers Game Guide, but we're still working on the full review. Until that's ready, we want to know if you've decided to pick up Marvel's Avengers. Vote in our poll, and then give us your reasoning in the comments section below.

Not going to lie I broght it a few days ago on stadia.
Love it so far
You need an option for preordered it and then cancelled once playing the beta.
it looks okay but I have other more appealing looking games that are worth my time to be honest
Not yet, but I'll very likely play it on PS5.
@Enuo im thinking of doing the same
Huh... Almost 25% pre-ordered that game? To those who did, could you explain (I'm genuinely curious)? Was it the Avengers brand? Did you try the beta and liked it? Did you trust Crystal Dynamics? Did you forget to cancel?
@Enuo pretty much sums it up. I like the Kate Bishop add but will definitely hold out for PS5 at this point too much to wrap up on my PS4.
No, played the Beta and hated it. Friend of mine got it so tried it on game share and it wasn't much better. OK combat and an awful loot system, mediocre level design and grindy nonsense. Not for me
Nope. Tony Hawk is getting my money instead.
The loot system kinda throws me off, kinda nice to hear that the game ain’t bad at least. Maybe get it later... maybe.
Nah.
I'm personally going to save up for stuff like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2, Spider-Man Miles Morales and Shin Megami Tensei III HD Remaster
Games that actually deserve my money.
@Kirbyboy92 Same for me. I am a huge Marvel/Avengers fan, so I am exactly the target audience for this game. But everything I have seen leaves me absolutely cold. I do not plan to buy the game.
I hope others enjoy it though!
@Olmaz yes, I pre-ordered it. It was for my two Marvel obsessed boys. Although I'm sure I'll play it at some point! So I guess because of the Avengers brand. If my kids didn't want it, I wouldn't have pre-ordered, but waited for the reviews to come out. I'd have probably waited for a price drop, or maybe bought it for the PS5.
I have to say though, for the other posters who are curious, my 10 and 7 year olds loved playing the Beta, and are loving playing it now. I haven't been able to pry them away long enough to play it myself, but I've been watching them play it, and I have to be honest, it's pretty good.
Would like to play the campaign since it's so Ms. Marvel-centric. But I'm going to wait until it's discounted - probably 50% off.
Nah. Not a big superhero fan, and even if I was, I'm not fond of its GaaS-esque game design.
You'd have to pay ME to play this game.
😜
If I want to play a Marvel-set game I'd just boot up Spider-Man instead.
I also think there's something iffy about reviews coming out for this after it's already been released. Did they not have enough copies to go round or something?
So at time of posting:
26% yes
34% not yet
41% no
Says a little more when you don't dilute the yes and no responses imo.
@Bingbongboyo Fair enough, it's true that for a kid, it would look like a dream come true!
I think if this game was more based around the cinematic levels rather than the multiplayer type levels, I think it would of gathered much more interest. But I'm not into loot games so unfortunately the appeal isn't there. I do love superhero games though so maybe when it's cheap I might grab it.
Don't buy GaaS. Square could learn a lesson from Sony how to make a proper Marvel game.
@Kcwolfuk I genuinely completely forgot that Stadia existed.
YUP, been on it all day!!
@Olmaz yes, it's made for them! I'm interested to see if my 10 year old will still be playing it a month from now. He loved Spider-man, and got his first Platinum with it, so he has a good comparison for quality. As I say, it is pretty good, so I have a feeling he'll play it quite a bit.
When it was announced it was my most anticipated title for a while and they did well at every info snippet to make it to the point I’ll wait for it to get to destiny £5 bargain bin.
Which no doubt it will.
@Olmaz The same reason most people pre order games.
Its sad that this is the new game to hate.
I gave in and bought it. I'm just treating it like a single player game and ignoring all the online stuff. The campaign is pretty decent so far.
After the Nintendo bomb yesterday about Super Mario 3D All-Stars being a limited-time digital purchase, I went with that game instead of any other. I'm waiting for the review anyway.
@Bingbongboyo Wow! A platinum at 10, kudos to your little guy!
Sincerely, I'm glad they enjoy it, seeing a kid's very simple and pure joy just playing something is very humbling!
Nah, I'm kind of really sick of super heroes at the moment on all fronts. I played Ultimate Alliance 3 on the Switch back when it came out and that's only because my friend bought it and I got to play it with him on co-op.
I don't even have a PS4 anymore so I couldn't really play it even if I wanted to.
@Cutmastavictory I'm sorry, I'm not sure I understood your comment. Just for clarification, what is "the same reason most people pre order games."?
Also, I don't hate the game per se, but I am very disappointed to see something with that much potential being brought to that level. This could have been an amazing single player adventure...
Not gonna lie the game looks a little toss
@Olmaz I think people pre order games that they know they are going to buy. Simple. Nothing wrong with that. My second sentence, wasn't directed at you, but a general observation. This is the new game to hate en masse
I actually really enjoyed the beta and was planning on buying the cool Steelbook from game but I held off mainly cuz I blew a blood vessel in my finger and think it would be very painful to play at this point in time.
@Cutmastavictory I guess you're right. I have never pre-ordered a game, and completely switched this generation to waiting a few months for a massive sale to buy my games (the game is then patched and with all DLCs completed), so the pre-ordering mindset is pretty alien to me, but I get where you come from.
And you're also right that the backlash may be going a bit overboard on that game, but MTX and milking a loved franchise tend to cause that (see Battlefront 2).
I like Marvel comics and films but I tried the Beta and found it decidedly meh. Maybe it'll be one of those games where you play it in two years time once they've improved everything...
I was planning on avoiding it after not getting on well with the beta, but it was ordered for me for my birthday. I'm legit enjoying the campaign so far. The first 30 - 45 minutes are genuinely lovely.
Of course not
This game will have a monetization shift in the next 3-6 months I imagine. I'll pick it up then.
@__jamiie oh yes and it plays better an loads faster however I Don't have a ps4 Pro so obviously it's going to look better to me on stadia
Nope I don’t like to waste my money
I'll probably pick it up when it is dirt cheap and play the through the single player campaign.
I will wait until its $10 in a year. I watched a couple of reviews from people I trust and I must say its lackluster. The main gripe besides the loot system and micro transactions seems to be the lackluster level design and repetitive mission structure.
No, I'll wait for a month or two. Who knows, maybe Outriders may even supplant it as my next gaas.
No way, this came across as another Anthem with Marvel skins when they first talked about it and everything I saw or heard about went downhill from there. If there is a decent single player campaign and its a free I may think about downloading it, then probably decide against it.
After endgame wrapped phase 3 up I've just got sick of marvel in general. And not really into games as a service so I'll just skip it.
Thought the beta was ok. I'll probably wait for a really good sale or if I run out of games to play this winter when work is slow, hopefully grab it a lower price... Whichever comes first
@Wolvieware
Use Amazon prime. That's what I did
@Kcwolfuk I really wasn't taking a swipe btw. I have heard genuinely heard so little about Stadia recently that I had forgotten all about it. I would have actually expected to hear more about it during lockdown too. A purely digital streaming platform seems like the ideal thing to promote over the last few months.
I'm waiting on the january deep sale for this one. Will hopefully be playing it on a ps5 without the annoying loading screens.
@__jamiie so did Google.
@RenanKJ same. Damn Nintendo cost me £90 yesterday after ordering the game & watch too...
Not interested. Looks like the most cynical product to me...
@Kirbyboy92 agreed. They showed almost nothing for years and then when the gameplay videos dropped it looks like a button masher with micro transactions and loot boxes and bland level design.
If this game is unsuccessful there is the very real possibility the servers will be shut down within a couple of years and you’ll be left with a colourful coaster for your coffee which cost $60-$100.
I can’t help thinking S/E have basically made Anthem with superheroes. Id love to hear what the development process was. It was in development for literally years and they showed nothing to hype up the Marvel fans, which is so odd because Avengers is a multi billion dollar franchise.
It looks to me like they’ve made a solid but unremarkable single player game and then added all the monetisation features and loot right at the end of development to make the end game content last forever with grinding and buying in game currency.
The problem is, if they are gonna do this, design the whole game from the ground up using this plan. Don’t just tack it on at the end and expect gamers to give a *****. The gameplay loops have to be interesting to back up having loot boxes etc.. Maybe I’m wrong but the gameplay looks INCREDIBLY bland...
One of the most enjoyable and balanced loot based games out there right now is Nioh 2. It doesn’t have any micro transactions or in game currency.
Feels like the developer respects its customers. That’s important.
Everything I hear or see about Avengers leaves me feeling like it’s a very cynical cash grab... prove me wrong Square/Enix, prove me wrong....
Had it pre-ordered and finished the campaign yesterday. I thought the campaign was actually pretty great myself and it didn't feel bolted on at all.
@Arnna "you’ll be left with a colourful coaster for your coffee which"
Not really. Plenty of single player content.
@__jamiie I think it's been getting more and more popular I mean I'd never get rid of my ps4 and I still plan on getting Ps5 on release but stadia is really starting to move now and games play and look fantastic plus in loving the no downloads on it
@naruball provided it doesn’t require a constant connection like many games as service titles.
Don’t get me wrong I hope this isn’t true.
Haha, what? I thought this was free to play.
Not now playa.but i will eventually.i got to many games on my backlog plus i just bought come of games.my backlog is growing .the beta wasnt bad.i enjoy it.graphics is amazing.but will get it soon.word up son
@Olmaz I think that it can be both things. Just because it has been labeled as a games for service doesn't mean it can't have an amazing single player campaign. I am enjoying the story so far and feel like I am getting my money's worth. My trust in the Marvel brand, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics has been well-placed. The fact that there is a free upgrade to PS5, as well as more free characters, story and missions to come is something that I am happy to support. I have never really enjoyed any game as service before and rarely preorder. Well worth the purchase in my opinion, but really love this game so far!!
@Olmaz I had fun with the beta, it scratched the itch I always have for a brawler game with a story. After early impressions spoke highly of the campaign I was still on the fence... so i let a d20 decide for me - odd, I buy; even, I wait - I rolled a three and preordered a few days before release with the bundle that had early access and some stuff (including enough currency to buy the hero card for the first post launch hero).
I've had an absolutely great time with it so far.
@Dodoo Me too. At least the official Nintendo store doesn't charge until dispatch unlike Amazon.
I got it and Tony hawks, but Tony hawks has had my attention so far.
November Black Friday will be when I buy games. Retailers in the US have a blow out sale every year. I may pick up around 8-12 titles on that day. Depends on what is on sale that I don't have already.
I would have absolutely LOVED an Avengers game if it were a single player, offline, action RPG. It would have been a dream!
But I have absolutely zero interest in any game like this one, regardless of the branding.
No time for hammers, shields and Hulk smashes. Too busy doing kick flips, indy nosebones and listning to Suprman👌👌
I had the game pre-ordered, was planning to cancel after hearing about all the negatives, but forgot and well it's here in my hands now lol.
No plans to play it for awhile though, gonna wait for patches AND for all DLC characters and their missions to become available.
I'll give it a couple of weeks! See how it goes down with the general public and then decide.
@Arnna you're right. I forgot about that.
Playing the single player alongside the kids and we're all really enjoying Ms Marvel's story. That alone has been worth it so far. They'll have a great time taking turns doing the missions as well. No regrets here.
Might get it on PS5 if nothing better at the time.
naah, live service gaas of this nature can do one. Looks utterly generic
@JapaneseSonic lol you're right. oops i guess. not sure where i added in the extra one. so to make it even simpler (for me)...
26% Yes
74% No
I love all the marvel movies but i'll wait until its cheaper..wont be long before the price drops below £20..
Yeah I purchased it and the single player campaign is interesting so far. I don't have any interest in the online elements so i'll move to PES 2021/ Mafia Definitive Edition once I am done with the single player campaign.
Noe, I'd rather suck piss out of a tramps beard
I’ve just finished the campaign, but i still have no idea what I am doing in it. It was a buggy mess throughout the campaign and on multiple occasions I had to restart because of game breaking mechanics!
I’m pretty sure I can’t platinum it, mainly because I don’t know how! Do I just keep replaying the same mission 400 times to level up? How boring.
I really wish Crystal Dynamics made it in the same style as Spider-Man! Such a let down.
I bought it so my 8 yr old and I can play together. We played the beta and he loved it.
Enjoying the game so far! Not very far into it yet though. One gripe I do have is that it takes you out of the experience a little hearing Nolan North & Troy Baker on screen together! I feel like I should be seeing Nathan & Sam Drake but I'm not -.-
Yeah, this is a big ol' "maybe on PS5" for me. Still some parts of the game I like the look of but the beta was a real mixed bag for me.
