There’s still a future for the Shenmue franchise, as Crunchyroll has announced that it’s partnering with Adult Swim on an anime adaptation of the legendary series. A full 13-episode run is currently in production, which will air on Crunchyroll outside of Japan and mainland China. It’ll also feature as part of Adult Swim’s Toonami in the United States.
While there’s currently no date attached, Chikara Sakurai is directing at Telecom Animation Film. Series creator Yu Suzuki will serve as an executive producer on the project. This all bodes well for the continuation of the series, which has been uncertain since the crowd-funded release of Shenmue III late last year.
We felt the threequel was enjoyable against all odds in our review: "Shenmue III is a game lost in time, but that’s probably the greatest compliment you can pay this long-awaited sequel. Newcomers will be utterly bemused by its slice of life-style idiosyncrasies, but for franchise fans this is the faithful follow-up that they’ve been waiting almost two decades for. This is a weird and wonderful game."

Well that’s extremely cool. I’ll definitely tune into this. We need to know where the sailors go to hang out!
This maybe the only way to continue the Shenmue story after 3 cos I doubt they would be able to get the money they need to make more games.
I think the concept will be better this way, it did not age well as a video game. A shame, cause Yu Suzuki is a very talented person.
I see.
I am so happy this is being made, and perhaps it will run long enough to complete the story.
It would be great to have more sega properties get anime shows like valkyria chronicles 3&4 and the entire Yakuza series.
So each season can be several years apart, horribly dubbed and awkward to watch. I'm stoked.
I still need to play Shenmue III! I just need to find the time to beat the first two as it has been a long while since I last played them. Being busy sucks sometimes.
That's a lot of fork lifting
Probably the best way to get to a story conclusion. I was already in my late 20's when I played Shenmue on release. At the rate it's going via games neither Yu Suzuki or myself will live long enough to see the end of Ryo's saga!
What the heck is an adult swim anime?
12 Episodes in training to fight one thug at the last episode. next season after 20 years.
welcome to shenmue world.
@ShaiHulud a TV channel that airs mature cartoons/anime like Rick and Morty or Robot chicken. Also have a anime lineup that runs under the name toonami.
@tameshiyaku Cheers! I wasn't sure what to expect with a name like Adult Swim 😅
If they don’t show Ryo opening capsule toys then the anime it’s a failure
So, is this an adaptation of the first game? a continuation after 3?
Id prefer some Skies of Arcadia anime but Shenmue will do just nicely. More classic Sega Anime please.
@nessisonett
I know a place a Melbourne if you’re ever visiting.
Cool news! I've been wanting to try out the games but this anime will be a great stepping stone for me.
I just wonder now who will be handling the English Dub?
