Upcoming open worlder Assassin's Creed Valhalla is keen to show Vikings as settlers as well as invaders. Main character Eivor and his or her ilk arrive in England looking to make a new home for themselves, and this is where the game's all-new settlement system comes into play.
Explained in-depth over on Eurogamer, the system sounds like a really cool addition. The gist of it is that as you adventure across the land, raiding enemy strongholds and allying yourself with local lords, you'll assemble a catalogue of resources. These resources can then be spent on your settlement, where you can construct buildings and establish trade.
Apparently, there's a whole lot of stuff to unlock and eventually upgrade. Stables let you buy and train horses, while tattoo parlours open up a wealth of inky customisation options. What's more, characters that you meet across the game may come back to the settlement to, er, settle. Some can even be romanced, and Eivor will be able to ask them out on dates. Lovely.
Last but not least, an assassin (remember those?) called Hytham will establish the Hidden Ones bureau in your settlement. Here you can you pick up assassination targets who belong to the Order of the Ancients. It sounds similar to the web of cult assassinations that you could carry out in Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

But I don't want to want this game because Ubisoft…
With luck I'll hold off and reviews will be bad, or I'll get it pre-owned.
I'm a sucker for any type of settlement building. So this seems like a fine addition.
So can't wait for this!
I hope they make it useful to the core gameplay, not just an optional side-thing that doesn't really provide any benefit (like the conquest system from AC Odyssey).
Colony 6.
That's a running joke in my house. Any game where you build a village it automatically becomes referred to as "Colony 6".
First game I recall really doing this in was Dark Cloud but kids were too young way back when. Everyone in my house knows Xenoblade Chronicles.
@JapaneseSonic Ni no Kuni 2’s kingdom building was great fun I loved it!
As for Valhalla I wish I could be excited for it. It’s Vikings and set in England, but I feel the game formula is stale after only 2 AC games like this, I just can’t be arsed with it tbh.
Piss off, i'm playing Skyrim VR atm...Haha!
Sounds like a fun addition.
What does any of this have to do with actual assasination, like the assassins creed group(remember those)?
Except if I am to now believe ,that Vikings, grew settlements, and then trained them to become assassin's(Apparently they are just picking assassins off the streets, nowadays).
As someone who only recently started Origins after many years away from AC (and has Odyssey waiting in the wings thereafter), I am REALLY liking their action RPG take on the material and I have become MUCH more interested in Valhalla since starting Origins.
I've largely ignored Origins and Odyssey so to be honest I'm praying for great reviews. I'd love to get stuck into a great open world on the PS5 at launch!
Is it just me that gets put off by things like this? Seems too complicated. Like the whole settlement thing in Fallout 4 put me off the game. I just want another Black Flag.
An Assassin named Hytham? Sure Jan, lol.
It's a deep sale for me. I want to wait for user reviews as well...
Sounds great, similar to the Villa and Homestead from the older games!
Can't wait for this, loved origins and odessey, I actually never enjoyed the first AC games, played most of them but never actually finished any of them ended up getting bored, then saw origins on sale for 15 and picked it up because of the Egyptian theme and loved it. The Vikings theme should be good too, got it pre ordered so it will arrive before my ps5 annoyingly but can look at the case for a week haha.
@theheadofabroom what? Regardless of their issues I’m sure there are lots of good people who have worked on this game and deserve to have it supported
@Daleaf same
@Boucho11 the people who did good work have had their salaries paid, the people who will get bonuses based on sales are at the level where the problems are.
@Fenbops I didn't know Nino Kuni 2 had settlement building. That sounds really cool. Do you recommend playing the first one before the second one?
@Dominator2885 nah they’re completely unrelated!
Ok cool. I'll have to do some research to see which one grabs my attention more
Hmm sounds like Suikoden.....
@theheadofabroom I usually just wait 6 months and get it half price or less
Knowing Ubisoft, they will come up with decent interesting concepts and ideas in game play mechanics, but some how half a*se them and ruin it somehow with silly micro transactions.
@theheadofabroom the problem then becomes the good people who just want to make good games are the first to be laid off when a game performs poorly/ gets a crap Metacritic score... Honestly everyone is screwed no matter what you do.
Really good idea, I usually spend more time focusing on settlements than the actual game when it is well implemented. Although with a Ubisoft game, I wonder what king of microtransations they will add around the settlement
@Mintie yeah, there's not much you can do about that, but generally the good people can find work elsewhere pretty quickly, or start their own studio. Layoffs are an unfortunate fact of the industry in its current state, and I say that as someone who's been through it in the past.
@Rhaoulos I know you typo'd 'king' when you meant 'kind', but now I'm imagining you have to give a gift to be able to visit the Earl or receive a visit from a traveling King. Costs £5.
@nessisonett glad to see someone actually remembers Assassins Creed has had a lineage of town-building basically from the begining!
The villa, Rome, istambul through Ezio Trilogy, The Homestead in AC3, honestly, these games have ever been only about the stabbing!
@Tharsman I’ve been binging the series and playing most of the early games for the first time so they’re still fresh in my memory. Onto 3 now and it’s so much better than I would have thought from the reviews. The scenery in the remastered version looks beautiful too!
@nessisonett this mongh I been replaying Ezios Trilogy (platinum it on PS4 and 100%ing it on Xbox now.) this is like the third time I play through some of these games, 4th for AC2. I love this series.
AC3 I played 4 times already (4th replay just before Ezio Trilogy,) I actually love it. Sure, character is not as charismatic as Ezio, but a character does not have to be charismatic to be a good character. Plus: AC3 I think has the most memorable antagonist/villain.
I have always enjoyed playing assassin's creed games but to add this rubbish to the game seams a waste of time. No longer assassin's creed more the settlers. I will wait for far cry 6 than waste money on this.
@rjejr ohhhh yes what a game Dark Chronicle 2 was. I do remember parts of the first one but 2 was a blast! Did you ever play White Knight Chronicles? Apparently that had very similar settlement building mechanics.
@Stuballs When Dark Cloud 2 came out I realized Dark Cloud was just really a tech demo for what the PS2 could do, DC2 was much closer to a JRPG, DC was closer to Ico or Shadow of the Colossus, a fairly empty world.
I bought the Complete Edition or whatever they called it when White Knight Chronicles 1 & 2 were merged together. I got as little past what would have been the end of WKC 1 when the grinding and sameness all became a bit too much and I moved on. Coincidentally I never beat the final boss in Dark Cloud 2. First time I went up that hill he kicked my butt so bad I never went up again.
Sorry, nobody in my family remembers any city building in WKC. Not saying it wasn't there, but we play a lot of JRPG and they all kind of run together after awhile.
Tbh that screenshot looks just like AC Oddessy or Origins.
Most likely going to be a long game with characters nobody cares about. Buying this game is like buying a new EA sports game every year. It's same game just rebranded.
Sounds great. I look forward to play this, I enjoyed Origins and Oddessy. I have not finished Oddessy, because of loading times, it is very annoying, so I will play on PS5.
@theheadofabroom I did make a typo. But Ubisoft are the king of microtransaction so it "king" of fits.
@Rhaoulos yeah it was just one of those where I reread it a few times trying to work out what you meant, and each possible meaning made some sort of sense, even if it was obvious what you actually meant…
