It’s been rumoured for what feels like an eternity, but NBA 2K21 will finally add a female MyPLAYER mode. As part of a new mode named The W, you’ll be able to create your own WNBA superstar, and take them through a full pro career featuring all 12 real-world teams. You’ll also be able to go head-to-head “in The W Online featuring intense 3v3 MyPLAYER competition”.
There’s a trailer embedded above which introduces the new option. It does seem like a stripped back version of the traditional MyPLAYER mode, with no Neighborhood to participate in. However, publisher 2K Sports has been teasing changes to that aspect of the package as well, which we should learn more about imminently.

This is great, it's about time women have representation in one of the highest yearly selling video game franchises.
@Turismo4GT certainly is! I know of quite of few people that are very happy about this addition. My niece especially is going to be very happy to hear it!
@Sub-Xero why you so mad bro? OK not "about time" but you think it's "wasted dev time" because they did this? I'm sure if they didn't have time to do it they'd not have done it.
@Total_Weirdo they do have National female teams in fifa!
@Sub-Xero I think it's the length of your rant that kinda betrays at least some annoyance with their decision to include the option of a female player. I think it's really cool because, while no one watches the WNBA, it doesn't mean girls don't also play basketball (they do) and I'm sure most wouldn't mind having the option to play as female in a game (especially since they'll probably never get their own).
Netball 2K21
@Sub-Xero Whatever ulterior motives they may have, it looks like they put a good amount of work into this mode, and I'm sure it will help bolster interest in the WNBA, even if just by a little bit. So good on them, IMHO!
I actually looked up the WNBA earlier this year because someone told me they were still around, and I was arguing that it got disbanded over a decade ago...I was wrong, lol.
@Sub-Xero You're free to comment however you want and I don't have any particular problem with you but come on, you're bringing up virtue signaling because they added an option to play as female. That's kind of a rant. WNBA aside, the ability to play as a female character is fairly standard in video games, why should a sports game be any different?
@zupertramp
I'd say @Sub-Xero actually has a really good point. The WNBA has been around for nearly a quarter century, if these devs actually cared about representation they would've at least added this mode as a side feature to the NBA games in the early years of last-generation at the latest. And if they truly gave a damn they would've been making full standalone WNBA games for Dreamcast, PS2, etc back in the days when there were more than just sports games based on the major professional leagues. This is just a way, like EA did a few years ago with Live, to get a few good-guy PR points and maybe sneak in more opportunity to get some money out of the female demographic because to the suits at these companies women are just a walking $ also. I got no problem with the feature and if it makes a WNBA fan happy, that's great, but given the type of company Take 2 is, people aren't wrong to be cynical.
@Sub-Xero Point taken on taking the space to reasonably explain things but my pointing out your lack of brevity was just one example of why it came off, at the very least, grumpy - since you'd asked. Your overall tone, though, didn't help either. "No one watches it. No one cares." I can old man rant with the best of them and that's just what you sound like in some spots. Maybe I'm projecting.
In any case, I still don't see the harm in their decision to add a WNBA aspect to an NBA game. And it's not a waste of time if it ultimately makes them money by appealing to a larger demographic.
@Gamer83 Cynicism is totally justified. But like whatever the reason, you can actually play a WNBA character in a game after 20+ years of it being ignored. Hard to see it as a net negative. (Pun intended, for the purposes of levity and such.)
@Sub-Xero
Yeah, I like watching women's basketball myself. Not so much the College tournament anymore because UConn just crushes people but I've enjoyed watching Diana Taurasi for a long time going back to when she played with the Huskies. Some others are Sue Bird, Breanna Stewart, Skylar Diggins. The WNBA has actually come a long way and has quite a few exciting players now so I actually think it's a shame, given how hard these athletes work, that more people aren't into it. It was fun back in the day too with the likes of Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, Rebecca Lobo, Becky Hammon, to name a few but the people running things failed to capitalize.
@zupertramp
Sure, if it gets people hyped that's great, there are WNBA fans out there and as long as it doesn't take away from the devs addressing other issues with these games, even better.
Well, now they need to add a lingerie mode!
