The console world is definitely changing, with manufacturers breaking down barriers and publishers leveraging the advantages that brings. Buried in its Ubisoft Connect announcement, the French publisher also announced that its future releases will support cross-progression, meaning your save data will be available on whichever platform you play on.
Curiously, this function won’t begin with Watch Dogs: Legion, but Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Immortals Fenyx Rising, and Riders Republic will all support it. “Cross-progression is a feature that allows you to carry your save data from one platform to the next,” the company explained. “All your game progression is saved within Ubisoft Connect, so you won’t lose a step if you change consoles or switch to PC.”
To be fair, this is pretty cool, and something we hope will become more of a standard as the generation progresses. You can find out more about cross-play and which other games support cross-progression in our guide through here. What do you think of this new feature from forthcoming Ubisoft titles? Switch systems in the comments section below.

So I can play on my Switch, then my PS4, then my PS5, then on my Series S, then on my Nonexistent Samsung Smart Fridge?
That's pretty cool.
@HotGoomba Well it is a fridge, being cool is what they do best.
FINALLY a feature designed for ADULTS who enjoy more than one gaming platform! Hoping more developers follow suit
The weirdos at digital foundry will be happy about this. I don’t see much use for myself, but cool none the less.... wait does this mean the save files will be stored on Ubisoft servers and not on the console itself, requiring a constant online connection like the crew?
@TwomanybuttonS My guess is that the saves will be saved locally and will sync with Ubisoft's servers when you're online.
@get2sammyb That’s basically what happens already with PS Plus cloud saves. I’m sure somebody will find something wrong with this somehow.
Well that's a very nice feature.
This is a good feature, I'm playing genshin impact on pc, phone, and tablet, cross-save is a super convenience feature.
Such a smart way to get players, like me, to double dip. Would love having the higher performance when on the TV but the portability of the Switch when the TV is not available. Very much looking fwd to Fenyx Rising!
Oh finally
CD Projekt Red did something similar with Witcher 3 on Nintendo Switch allowing you to import your Steam or GOG saves, as did Larian Studios with that version of Divinity Original Sin 2, but this is actually extremely convenient for those who play multiplatform games on console. Really hope this becomes more permanent and properly unifies all platforms for those who invest in more than one such as myself.
But, does this mean you need to own separate console versions of the same game in order to play on the different consoles?
@graysoncharles
Ok thanks for the info.
So my watch dogs legion save won’t carry from PS4 to ps5?
Guess I’ll wait for launch then
That’s really cool. I hope Blizzard will do something similar with Overwatch 2.
@NateGoesLive
They say you can transfer your saves but try search more to make sure it's not just BC.

Good, I had wondered about this. Given Valhalla is out on the 10th and PS5 on the 19th, will be carrying my save over to the new console.
@I_Like_It you can play a demo of it, for free, on Stadia later today. Hype!
Don’t know how I feel about this. It’s a useful feature sure, but can I be arsed to sign in to online systems for every bloody publisher big enough? I’d rather the platform holder just open cross saves to other platforms if I’m honest. I never made an account for the old system Ubisoft had and it was a hinderance every time I logged in to a game.
Then again, if they can somehow store trophy progression information and then sync it to unlock PlayStation trophies even if I was playing on my Switch, well, that would be a useful feature for some games that don’t require the power of a next gen console for the experience (something like their child of light for example, or Rayman Legends).
What's the catch? Mandatory Ubisoft Connect registration and log in? Online connection required? They've tried this before...
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Exactly. Less than half a percent of the playerbase will find this useful. I certainly don't buy my games twice on different platforms.
That's great news. I already love I can pick up Destiny 2 where I left off, no matter if I want to game an evening with PlayStation or Xbox-bound friends.
I guess I might actually buy Fenix Rising for XBox AND switch, then!
This is something that has been wanted by me for a long time Great addition............being able to take a PS4 save to a PS5 is a massive leap for this Generation.
How is this going to impact trophies/achievements?
Obviously the big question is about how it handles moving from one platform to another; but moving from one generation (PS4) to the next (PS5) is also important. If the trophies are not able to be applied retro-actively (or at least within the same family, use a shared list) then moving a save game over loses a lot of its luster, since you would have to start over anyway if you wanted to platinum it.
I'm more interested in cross-play. It's 2020. I should be able to play Rainbow 6 with my buddy on Xbox. Period.
@I_Like_It Stadia isn't terrible but it's FAR from ideal as a game streaming service and was pushed out the door way too early imo
I tried Stadia Pro when Google were handing out free subscriptions around March or April and I honestly don't know who this would appeal to, nor do I think it's optimal for a lot of the games featured on the service. Games like Destiny, MK11, Thumper and Samurai Shodown which are very reaction heavy and require precise inputs are extremely gimped when streamed as opposed to playing on native hardware like a console or PC. Especially Thumper considering the latency really shows its true colors during that game and it caused a lot of unfair deaths in my experience.
@I_Like_It Stadia is excellent. All the latency problems at launch are gone. I had the same thoughts as you, but tried it on a browser on my 9 year old iMac and it ran perfectly. Ended up buying a controller and chrome cast ultra and am playing all games in 4k. For the Immortals demo, just go to Stadia, sign up, and you can play it straight away, it’s free, no downloads. All games are no downloads. Had a three month free trial and in that time, there’s been a load of free games for it. Despite having a PS5 pre ordered, I’ll be playing Cyberpunk and Valhalla on Stadia.
If it runs on ps4 or switch I wouldn’t play it on ps5, on the new console I would play new games or remastered games only so can’t think about how this feature could be really useful. Seems cool but...
