What a strange launch Marvel’s Avengers has endured! The game has, by all intents and purposes, sold well – but it’s perhaps failed to meet the behemoth expectations put upon it by publisher Square Enix. Case in point: the title topped the USA sales charts for September 2020, securing the second-best superhero game debut of all-time behind only Marvel’s Spider-Man. And yet, this news has been overshadowed by confirmation that its first major update – alongside its next-gen upgrade – has been delayed.
Elsewhere, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 enjoyed an impressive debut as well, finishing in fourth position with the highest launch month dollar sales in Tony Hawk history – an amazing feat. Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time didn’t do quite as well, entering in 11th position behind Star Wars: Squadrons, which debuted in ninth place. Ghost of Tsushima continues to sell well in 12th place, while the industry as a whole raked in 10 per cent more than it was able to a year ago. That’s the coronavirus effect in action, folks.

Still playing THPS 1+ 2, getting some of the hard Get Theres and secret scores is taking awhile.
Haters, who haven't even played the game, by all means, eat your heart out.
wow - can't believe Last of us 2 is third biggest selling game of 2020. I thought it had terrible sales with the massive drop off after first few weeks and hate it was receiving. Glad it's doing well as I absolutely loved this game and I've nearly finished my third play through. And I wonder why I have such a huge backlog!
Can't wait to get GoT and FFVII. Just waiting for the PS5 to arrive first...
Shows that you can stick Marvel on anything and it'll sell, though clearly such a cast of characters should have had a better game
@naruball People voicing constructive criticism about the predictable story, monotonous gameplay with very little variation in environments outside industrial facilities, boss fights that absolutely wasted iconic Marvel villains like Taskmaster and Abomination, the worthless loot that defeats the point of it being a loot heavy game if it doesn't even drastically alter how each character differs from one another, and lackluster multiplayer components in a game that is literally built around the live service model in a similar fashion to Anthem and Destiny, are not "haters".
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 from 2009 had more varied environments, a better presentation, loot that was actually worth something, superior gameplay where each and every character had a level of uniqueness or distinct traits that didn't immediately make them feel like one another, more challenging boss fights and sense of difficulty, a better roster of characters, and a considerably more engaging story that felt like a proper love letter to the characters it was utilizing.
@Kidfried I don't think it has, at least not for its name. Mario in second doesn't include its digital sales and had half as much time on sale in September and the player count has fallen off a cliff
I'm a bit surprised COD outsold Animal Crossing.
Marvel Avengers selling so well has nothing to do with the game, it has to do with the hype surrounding the game; but that will only get you so far. Now that the early adopters have gotten their hands on it, and word of mouth has started spreading, the sales will drop considerably.
To be clear, thats my take on the whole situation as an outsider looking in; though admittedly one that wants this whole model to finally reach the point where gamers want to move on from it.
Basically you can put the words "Mario" or "Marvel" on a box and it will sell.
People will alternate what those sales mean (Travesty or Vindication) depending on what fits their pre-chosen narrative 😉
Personally Waiting on a Sale/Updates for Avengers. Just do not think it is finished.
Loving SW: Squadrons. Already have my nephew hooked on it and he is a great wing man. Great fun with the Fam if they all SW fans 👍
@get2sammyb
This may be a stupid question, but why is Crash 4 included in the September NPD? The game came out on October 2nd.
