For a racing title, Pacer sure is slow about actually showing up. The good news is that the anti-gravity racer is now just around the corner. The WipEout-esque game will be sliding around and bumping into the side walls come 29th October 2020.
If you're unfamiliar with the game, there's a short trailer in the above tweet that shows off some gameplay. It's essentially an indie take on Sony's established anti-grav racer but while we've had quite a few of those, Pacer could come closest to aping the series. Developer R8 Games has ex-WipEout makers in its ranks, artist CoLD SToRAGE is onboard for the soundtrack, and Designers Republic has lent its design talents to the project. All being well, this could be pretty good, and we now don't have much longer to wait.

In my day Pacers were chewy mint sweets.
Nothing will be as good as Wipeout Omega VR
@thefourfoldroot I completely agree with that! It is one of the most immersive gaming experience of my life!
Had this one on my radar see how it reviews
If its good I might get it, what concerns me is that there will be just 14 tracks.
I backed it on KS, and have been playing it off and on for a years, and I have to say, unfortunately, it's not great.
It looks and sounds the part, that's for sure. The tDR designs are wonderful, the tracks are well thought out, and the soundtrack is phenomenal...but the feel just isn't there and the ship upgrade systems are so obtuse and completely unneccessary. It's worth noting that the ex-Psygnosis teammates are largely from the Wipeout 3 design team, and didn't have anything to do with how the originals felt to play. I haven't played in a while, so I'm not sure what kind of shape it's in at the moment, but I popped back in when they announced the console release, and I couldn't see how it could be released as a 1.0 release without some serious overhauls/refinements.
Also, Formula Fusion (the original title) was so much more evocative and overall better a name than the boring, generic "Pacer" they changed it to.
@Adol_Xin 14 tracks is totally fine. There were only 7 tracks in the the original Wipeout, 8 in XL/2097, 8 in Wipeout 3 (expanded to 16 in the UK-only Special Edition), and 8 tracks in Fusion. It wasn't until Wipeout Pure and Pulse on PSP that they really expanded the track list. Even Vita's 2048, the last game in the series, only had 10 tracks.
@GeneJacket Dang, bummed to hear that. wipEout 3 was the most stoic and sterile of the originals, so it would make sense. I'll definitely pass.
Make it PSVR compatible and i'm in. If it matches the brillance of Wipeout Omega that is.. I surely need something of a sequel to that!!😆
@doctommaso It's not terrible by any means, there are a lot of things I like about it, it just doesn't feel like Wipeout...which, being a spiritual successor that brought back so many of the original elements, was kind of the biggest selling point.
Don't just take my word for it, though. Like I said, I haven't played in a while and I don't know what they might have changed since the last time I did, so I'd suggest waiting for the reviews and see what others have to say.
If you are looking for a good anti-grav racer at the moment, I'd suggest Antigraviator and Redout, both of which are fantastic. There's also a free game on Steam called Vector that just dropped which isn't strictly a racer, it's more like Distance (which is also super, super cool), but with a super dope neon vector graphic style.
PlayStation Access did a stream of it a while ago and it seems alright but a bit underwhelming for how long it's taken.
I'll wait for reviews on this one.
Last time I played it on Steam, the weapons systems were basic but I look forward to seeing this update to see what has changed.
@GeneJacket Thanks for your thoughts and the recommendations.
@doctommaso My pleasure!
Definitely not shy about their inspirations, this studio. Honestly, all the details, down to the drum-n-bass soundtrack, almost feel like going a bit too far toward cloning versus “spiritual successor“.
I think what rubs me the wrong way about this is the graphic design, which veers between poor Designers Republic knockoff and a sort of bland pastiche that looks out of place with the rest of it. The harder you try to be exactly Wipeout, the more the things you get wrong stand out.
