Yes, you will be able to transfer your Cyberpunk 2077 save files from PS4 to PS5. This means that if you happen to start the game on PS4 and then play it on PS5 at a later date via backwards compatibility, you can take your progress with you. Lovely.
CD Projekt Red says that as long as you're playing on the same PlayStation account, you should be good to go.
The developer has also outlined three ways to transfer your save:
- Connect to your PlayStation Plus account and upload your saves or
- Transfer your data via LAN cable or wireless connection (WiFi) or
- Use a compatible storage device to copy and transfer your saves to the same PSN account on PlayStation 5.
Easy peasy.
If you haven't been able to get your hands on a PS5 — not your fault, PS5 stock tends to sell out incredibly quickly — then this news may be enough to convince you to at least start Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4, knowing that you'll be able to continue on PS5 later.
Might you be playing Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 when it launches on the 10th December? Dream of a Night City vacation in the comments section below.

Nope, I'll be playing this game next year when I have ps5, it will be a better game because of the hardware (ps5) and a lot of the bug will be squished too. Maybe I even get a discounted price 😃
Going to get it on Xbox because 1) I could actually snag a XSX unlike my bad luck trying to get a PS5 and 2) that Rockstar Energy promotion basically gets me the game for free
I'm confused - are there some PS4 games whose saves don't work via backwards compatibility? I just assumed that if the game works, the save automatically will.
I have a PS5 and have the game preordered, but I'll still likely wait for the update next year before starting it.
I'll wait for the PS5 version. I'll want the platinum and trophies don't carry over.
@Gatatog they work on the PS4 version. But if you upgrade to PS5 version there needs to be a way to transfer the save in the game itself or else it won't work
This is news? @shogunrok Is there a backwards compatibility game that can't transfer the save data for?
The real question is: is there gonna be a save transfer feature between the bc and the native ps5 version?
@wiiware I'm holding off until the PS5 version comes out as well. This is a game I want to be playing with the best version I can so will wait for all the kinks to be ironed out.
All these mad gets saying they'll wait.
12 DAYS!!!
Yes. This is not news. You can transfer all PS4 saves to use on PS5 for backwards compatibility. CD Project Red are just restating existing Sony guidance on how to do it.
I thought the PS5 version wasn't ready before later in 2021? All I can see in the PSN store is the PS4 version....I'm confused....
@Bytemare what's confusing? The PS4 version is out December 10th and PS5 version next year, hence why only the PS4 version is available to buy
@carlos82 This game has been delayed so many times that I find it sad it's not out on PS5 the same day. Think I'll just wait for the PS5 version then
question is do trophies transfer aswell?
@Bytemare it'll still look and play better on the PS5 at launch, from their twitter "Game does benefit from the new hardware, yes. Having said that: there will be a (free) upgrade later down the road that will help enhancing performance even further."
Sadly the video they showed is 1080p on YouTube, so its difficult to tell the resolution or whether it could well be 60fps but the PS5 bc version did look significantly better than the Pro, as they can create modes specifically for it. Ghost of Tsushima for example could almost pass off for a PS5 game.
@carlos82
This is not accurate. The currently referenced statement of CDPR is of save transfer between the ps4 and the bc ps5 version (which is basically the same). It nowhere states anything about the native ps5 version.
@MemSec yeah I just looked at the tweet more closely, I don't understand why they would state this as its the same for every game anyway and people will want to know how it translates to the PS5 version
@carlos82
True. Also I would like to know when the upgrade will be released. I hope not more than 3 months. They truly fumbled their communication leading up to release, which may have hurt the accumulated goodwill they have from fans.
Yeah ...this is a story just for the sake of it.
Great news play it again next year on a next gen console.
I’ll be playing the PS4 version on the PS5 at launch. I liked what I saw from the PS gameplay reveal 😎 and I’ll still have the full PS5 version to look forwards to
@jdv95 Good question, but I doubt it. I don't know of any games at all that have one trophy list for the PS4 and PS5 versions of games. Assassin's Creed Valhalla kind of does, where it does have a separate trophy list, but it will unlock any PS4 trophies you unlocked on the separate PS5 trophy list after the latest game update. Ubisoft did that, so the only way even something like that would happen is if the individual developer puts in the effort. So, still not that I know of since even that is a separate trophy list.
@Gatatog
Nope, all games saves carry over of playing in back compat mode. The more interesting question is whether the save will care over to the upgraded ps5 SKU
@Bytemare my guess is they would have liked to release it the same time, but because there are still so few ps5's out in the wild compared to ps4's if there was a tangible version of the game that was supiour but could only reach so few people that may end up hindering sales .
Sure people will still wait for the ps5/XBSX
My self included but that won't be nearly as big of a hit compared to something people could physically compare. Im guessing of course but I also wouldn't be surprised if sales aren't as high as they hoped-for we may get the next gen release date sooner then we think my guess is February.
Just going to wait for the PS5 version anyway. The less people buy the PS4 version and wait for the PS5 version, the quicker they will release it, since sales will be lower than expected.
@Gatatog Saves for back compatibility work just fine. The issue is PS5 saves are not in the same location. No Man's Sky you have to upload to their servers then download back to the PS5 version. Warframe was flawless, just downloaded PS5 version and logged in, they did the rest. Worth a look, a lots changed in 7 years 😎
You will however get trophies for the PS4 version and depending on the developer trophies on the PS5 version. No Man's Sky PS4 to PS5 just popped every trophy I'd already earned on PS4. Warframe gave me 99% progress on ones I'd already got, need to replay quests. Really looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077 😎
