DIRT 5 releases this week on PlayStation 4, but many will be waiting for that souped-up PS5 version. Fortunately, Codemasters has finally seen fit to show off that particular iteration of this off-road racer. The above video gives us a look at PS5 gameplay footage, and the game certainly has an edge over the current-gen counterpart.
Technical director David Springate discusses some enhancements made to the game for PS5, and it has plenty for next-gen adopters to get excited about. Firstly, the game can run at up to 120 frames per second on displays that support it, which will be perfect for racing game fans looking for a smooth experience.
DIRT 5 is also going to take full advantage of the DualSense controller, utilising its adaptive triggers and haptic feedback to make the action more tactile. Springate says these new features make it "feel like no other racing game". He also goes on to talk about 3D audio, saying you can plug in a regular pair of headphones and have 7.1 surround sound pumped into your ears. Apparently the game's soundtrack will blare out of the in-world speakers dotted around the race courses, meaning you'll hear music move from one side, to behind you, and get quieter as you drive away, for example.
It all sounds pretty exciting, and we're certainly intrigued to see all the differences for ourselves. Are you excited for DIRT 5 on PS5? Tell us in the comments section below.

Give me Driveclub 2 instead and I can die as a happy man. 😉
Pretty cool that the dualsense is being utilised in 3rd party games.
Can't wait to try the ps5 haptic and 3D audio on games 😃
Dualsense should be a no-brainer for all driving games. I'm glad first next gen title is setting that as a standard, for others to follow.
Cool. Cool-cool-cool.
Getting excited to try this new controler now, everyone is saying how good it feels, 2 more weeks to go. Might add this to my list of games just for some driving game
I love how he really pointed out the benefits with the new Dualsense functions and the benefits with the new Tempest 3D-audio system. This is the true next-gen for me (and I guess most of us here), things that makes us even more immersed in the games we play. And hopefully we can play these games in PSVR 2.0 within a few years and then the sky is the limit !!
2 weeks is too long.
@Zeke68 yep, great to hear him confirm that any pair of headphones can be plugged into the dualsense to experience the tempest 3d audio!
@Daleaf first I didn´t want this... but now it is exactly the same for me. I added this to my list because I want to feel the track with that beautiful new feedback of the dualsense.
The controller is made for racing games!
@Zeke68 So true, loved that game. Just patch the first one for 4k 60 and the bikes too 😎
@Crowley22g I would even pay for an upgrade like that !
@thefourfoldroot It's made for all kind of games ! I look forward for Demon's Souls and Spiderman M.M with the Dualsense. 2 weeks and counting....
@ORO_ERICIUS yea I have added it to my list of games now, so will have a nice range of games to play now should keep me going for a few months, my wallet can have a break for a bit now. This last month has gone so slow though roll on 19th got a week and half off so will get lots of time with the ps5 can't wait. Think that astro boy might be my first play as that will already be installed lol.
@Daleaf strange strange strange... exactly this is my plan to go and I have one week and a half off too lmao. For Shooter I have COD BOCW; for hack and slash I have Godfall; for jumping around I have AstroBot and yes it will be my first game to play; and now for racing I added Dirt 5. Good for a few months gameplay I hope . Money is gone with a second DualSense; the 3D Audio Headset and the charging dock. Overall about 1000€ scream
@Zeke68 I really don’t understand why Sony hasn’t released information on their 3D audio. Such information as to how users will be able to experience it (USB, 3.5mm headphone jack etc.) should be available by now so close to launch. However, what I did notice from this video was he said 7.1, 7.1 isn’t 3D audio. 7.1 is very flat audio it doesn’t give you any verticality in the sound. It’s why with Dolby Atmos you can introduce speakers up high which is 7.1.4. The PSVR supports proper 3D audio as it’s needed for VR so I hope the Dualsense supports full 3D via the 3.5mm jack although I do wonder the compression used via this means compared to direct USB or WiFi headset (dongle).
PS I do not understand why more outlets like PushSquare aren’t pushing for more info on 3D audio. It is something important for the users, last thing the users want is to get a machine home to find they can’t use the full 3D experience because they have the wrong setup
he had me at Pearl Jam
Talking about the SSD, 3D audio, DualSense... I like how people always assume only 1st party take advantage. Do you think all devs are lazy or what? Haha
Weird how he personally confuses the adaptive triggers with the haptics, but just really happy third party devs are using the features given that controllers on other supported platforms are just dead lumps of plastic, I really didn’t think haptics would be used much but happy to be proven wrong!
I really hope we can turn off certain song tracks or artists though, really don’t want to have to listen to stormzy or turn off all songs.
@dr_lovejoy
Good catch. But the guy didn’t even know how to differentiate between controller haptics and adaptive triggers, so I’m thinking maybe he got the number wrong. 3D audio via the tempest engine is built around many more directional points of sound source than even Atmos.
@thefourfoldroot my thoughts exactly. He isn’t giving a technical presentation or anything on the sound so people shouldn’t read too much into it.
@MarcG420 I think it is the same with the 3D Audio and the haptic feedback and the adaptive triggers. YOU have to test and feel it. Everything else is just imagination not more.
@dr_lovejoy
Yeah I totally agree. I have a 7.1 homecinema system so the vague "we will support it sometime in the future" is a downer for sure. I bought a pair of their new PS5 headphones with my PS5 so I hope I get them both at launch. But that was just because I want to experience the new audio to the fullest in games like Demon's Souls for example.
Dolby Atmos is great but not that great on most Blu-rays. It's usually just an upscaled version of an DTS:X 7.1 mix to be honest so I have high hopes that Tempest will be more "true" surround like Mark Cerny painted it up to be.
But hopefully we get to know more tomorrow. Seems many sites hinted that the last pre-view/review embargo is lifted tomorrow.
@MarcG420 but no one said he was giving a technical presentation! So you shouldn’t convey others comments as such. The comment is clear that the questions refers to Sony coming out and giving details on exactly how to best experience this technology. Usb provides far far higher bandwidth to a 3.5mm jack on a controller. If you have ever experienced the DualShock 4 3.5mm compared to optical out, hdmi or usb it is night and day difference. Also he is a developer on the game so it’s possible the game is only using 7.1 channels. Just because a 3D audio exists doesn’t mean people will use it.
@Zeke68 yep, and it’s exactly my hope that will find out this information. I use headphones and purchased the Arctis Pro with GameDac which uses optical. Currently I send audio to the tv via hdmi and optical pass-through to my headphones for 5.1 surround (fake obviously but it’s the highest rated headphones out there). My concern is whether this will support the ps5 3d audio over 2 channels. The Arctis pro supports usb audio on the PS4 but only stereo, so will that be my route 🤷♂️. In a way I hope so as the 3d audio only requires 2 channels and the Arctis pro supports Hi-Res audio (96kHz 24-bit) via usb on the pc.
@dr_lovejoy is it just me or are people super sensitive on the internet now...
I never said you said it was a technical demo, I was saying it’s not like he was giving one. There’s a big difference there.
You know it could be 7.1.4 (likely even far better) and he just said 7.1. The truth is it’s probably neither. 3D audio cannot be quantified like that really if there’s thousands of possible directions the sound could be coming from.
In any event, I happen to agree that more information would be good. This is likely one of those things they’re not talking about too much though because it has to be experienced to truly “get it”.
I meant no offence to you or your original comment, simply that people shouldn’t jump to conclusions or assume anything.
@ORO_ERICIUS exactly
@MarcG420 very sensitive yes... this pandemic ***** is going on everybodys nervs I think. Which is normal.
@ORO_ERICIUS that’s a good point that I forget about a lot since where I live the threat is minimal as there is no community spread of the virus at all currently here.
I know there are more important things to be worried about in the world but I hope this poxy lockdown doesn't delay the console release.
@MarcG420 I really am not sensitive but " He isn’t giving a technical presentation or anything on the sound so people shouldn’t read too much into it." comment on a reply directed at me is clearly implying (maybe you didn't mean me however the reply was at me) others are seeing it as technical. And replying to that is not sensitive, just like your reply to me isn't 'sensitive' (well I hope people don't get sensitive other anonymous internet posts) it's just clearing up facts.
@dr_lovejoy I’ll give you an example of why one shouldn’t jump to conclusions based on him saying 7.1.
Before he mentions that he says you get “Ambisonic” sound.
Do you know what that means?
@MarcG420 Looks who's being sensitive . As for 'Ambisonic' is basically 2 or more channels which 7.1 is. So your point?
@dr_lovejoy not even close.
It’s full sphere surround. In other words above, below, everywhere.
https://www.waves.com/ambisonics-explained-guide-for-sound-engineers
I’m not sure how you think I’m being sensitive by trying to show you that the information to alleviate your fears was actually included the whole time for those with the appropriate technical knowledge to understand what was said 😏😉
@MarcG420 That is not what 'Ambisonic' means that is a technology. If you read the article it clearly states that.
@MarcG420 For example it clearly says 4-channel format called Ambisonics B-format. Ambisonic means "denoting or relating to a high-fidelity audio system that reproduces the directional and acoustic properties of recorded sound using two or more channels"
Directional can be 5.1 or even 7.1 sound over 2channels
@dr_lovejoy You’re just not going to accept it then are you? 😂😂
I’m not wasting my time with someone who’s not willing to accept what’s right in front of their face.
A good explanation is here as well: https://www.rode.com/blog/all/what-is-ambisonics
“ Ambisonics is a full-sphere surround sound format or a means of representing the sound field at a point or in space. Unlike conventional stereo and surround sound formats (which are based on the principle of panning audio signals to specific speakers), ambisonics captures the full directivity information for every soundwave that hits the microphone. Crucially, this also includes height information, as well as the full 360° around the microphone.”
Edit: now, that you’ve read that try and fathom what that means when coupled with the tempest 3D audio engine.
I hope you come to the conclusion that it’s far better than “7.1” as it very clearly is.
@MarcG420 accept what though? I see your point and never argued it (Ambisonic supporting above and below sound channels ie 3d, doesn't mean people will utilise them), I questioned how you saw people who viewed the video. When my point has been and always will be that I want Sony to explain how we can use this technology, what compression we will get via different routes and the fact like I said 7.1 isn't 3d audio. So don't get upset, and try to change it to a conversation on different technologies. For example why even raise such a question? Did he mention it in the video? I thought you said it isn't a technical video so people shouldn't pay attention? Clearly you are someone who gets a little sensitive I see .
@dr_lovejoy he did mention it in the video and it isn’t a technical explanation at the same time. My point is that you were making assumptions based on him saying 7.1 when he was clearly just using it as an example.
In short assumptions are bad MKay.
Also trying to help one person overcome their assumptions and seemingly ignorance is not getting upset. I will say that this is utterly pointless though, so with that have a good day. I’m done.
Edit: you’ll notice my original reply wasn’t even to you, you just got upset and felt the need to reply to me. I was replying to fourfoldroot. You need not to have replied to me at all other than you getting crazy upset as evidenced by your entire set of replies after the fact, and you insistence that I’m upset (which I literally couldn’t care less about 😂😂).
@MarcG420 That's the thing I wasn't making assumptions (show my comment where I said otherwise, "I hope the Dualsense supports full 3D via the 3.5mm jack although I do wonder the compression used" is not me assuming anything) on anything technical, there's a good chance he just said 7.1 as it is easier for people to understand but we can't be sure as their lead platform is the Xbox based on advertising so they 'may' not put the extra effort in for the audio. I just want clarifications from Sony on how me as a consumer can experience it to it's full potential. Also the situation might arise where developers won't support full 3d and instead 7.1 though. Also to my knowledge Sony are not using Ambisonics, 'Member Ambisonics was used in Dirt 2 etc. 'Member? It's a huge difference to Sony's 5000 channel tempest engine, unless I am missing something.
I'm just going to leave it there as clearly we are in disagreement over what who said what.
EDIT: his reply was directed at me, so your reply to the people he was talking about is clearly me too. But hey maybe I was wrong (but not sure who else you would be talking about). However, my reply (#33) to your sensitive comment was clearly one of putting an end to it and you carried it on with questions and comments.
@dr_lovejoy you’re literally a waste of my time.
“ However, what I did notice from this video was he said 7.1, 7.1 isn’t 3D audio. 7.1 is very flat audio it doesn’t give you any verticality in the sound.”
^ what you said. Clearly shows your assumption. 🤣
Edit: you’ll notice that him saying ambisonics completely debunks your “doesn’t give you verticality” comment.
It’s ok that you didn’t understand what he said because you were ignorant of the term used, just learn from it and move on. You seem to be unable to do either though 😉
Has anyone managed to test if the G29 wheel works with the PS5? Sorry if this has been mentioned but haven't seen it announced.
@YETi I've seen it mentioned a few times, I own the same driving wheel so let's hope it's a fact 😎
@Daleaf also split screen local racing
@Tacktful don't say that, will have to buy a extra controller now haha. That is good though was going to wait on a extra controller but might just pick one up, for when my bro pops over.
