CD Projekt RED reports that Cyberpunk 2077 has now sold more than 13 million copies as of 20th December 2020, meaning the RPG shifted another five million units after launch. The developer stated it had reached eight million pre-orders on the day of release. This statistic also accounts for refunds processed up until the date in question, so the numbers could have been even higher had the Polish studio not actively promoted the chance to get your money back.
The Push Square PS4 review for Cyberpunk 2077 was published last night, where it was coined "the single biggest disappointment of the PS4 generation" with a 3/10 rating. The negative reception hasn't slowed down sales as of right now, however. Maybe some folks have a morbid curiosity to see just how bad it really is?

I have no issue with the game personally. I haven't played it, don't have any hat in this game but this kind of news kind of makes me sad.
This type of news just encourages companies to release broken products regardless of backlash cause they will still make money.
So disheartening for consumers.
8 million pre orders from people who had no idea the game they was buying was broken, that's called being deceived!
A further 5 million buyers on launch day and launch week without knowing what they was getting themselves into, that's also called being deceived.
Let's see how many more copies it sells within the next few months
At least your review was honest. Unlike some sites with gamer and euro in them.
That's why games companies like to trick their customer, it just works 😕
Good too hear that scamming your customers works. And now people stop complaining about broken games from EA or Bethesda or whatever because we all support it by buying it. And it shows deception work and as sheep we keep buying it.
I haven't received my refund from sony yet, by the way.
Very impressive numbers. I really like the game even with all its issues, so I really hope they can get this back on track.
I really hope number of refunds go up.
I read "Cyberpunk 2077 Sales Top 13 Million Refunds". Gave me a chuckle.
That's as huge as screwed up the PS4 version is. People are already reporting a significantly better performance with the 1.05 version though and there's more patches to come.
Some people aren't very discerning. The people who just play COD and FIFA every year are probably impressed with their punt on a different game!
It's probably both that some players aren't that discerning and others have a morbid curiosity. I kept my pre-order, in spite of a couple articles here at PS expressing concern for the console version, for the latter reason. Also I kinda didn't truly believe any company would release a game in this state. I was wrong.
Thats because most gamers know it will be fixed. The press on the other hand are in hysterics. Id hate to see them have to deal with a real problem.
It's really disappointing that so many people bought this game.
Well that means CDPR have made £650 million from a sub par broken game. My PS4 copy is under the tree - so I’m practicing my surprised x mas face!
After several more crashes I just had it refunded by PSN. Sony did it very quickly and now to just move on. I will check back in a year or two when they've released the PS5 version, all DLC and have patched it completely.
Probably alot of unwitting parents who've bought for their kids for xmas, who obviously often don't follow gaming websites. Say what you like, but this is why so many companies demand their games are out in time for the holidays
Most video games are sold on reputation rather than reviews or actual knowledge of the state of the game. Assassins Creed unity and Tomb Raider angel of darkness both also sold well but turned fans of the series and therefore all subsequent games sold less well. I suspect whatever CD project red puts out next is going to bomb.
The main story is still amazing and looks great on PS5
I have zero regrets preordering Cyberpunk. I am over 60 hours in on my base PS4 and the patches have really made a difference. I am thoroughly enjoying the game and would say it's one of my favourite games this year. It has bugs still but it's not broken anymore. It's not perfect but it's clear to me why it took CDPR so many years to make. There's a lot to enjoy and the progression system is really deep and intricate, it takes about 20 hours to really get into I'd say. Appreciate the lower frame rate is not acceptable for some but it doesn't really bother me. Will Push Square re-review in the future once the issues are ironed out? Because at this moment in time 3/10 isn't accurate anymore
@starbuck2212 So by your logic, you'd shrug your shoulders and go, 'it'll be fixed eventually' if you bought say a car? And couldn't drive it off the lot? But it's ok that it's broken and undrivable it'll get fixed eventually? I doubt it.
Why is it ok for games to be released unfinished but any other product people would be up in arms?
I have worked in retail my entire life and have witnessed some outrageous behaviour from people wanting refunds for something as simple as a pair of underwear so I find it bizarre that people will put up with this.
As for your point about the media, they , quite rightly feel they were unwittingly duped into deceiving people, so I would say some of the discourse is warranted.
It's a shame that the PlayStation version is in such a state - especially given that the Xbox version is in a relatively stable state. I think the framerate improved a little with 1.05 patch on base Xbox One - hitting in mid 20's rather than the teens.
Definitely no crashing every 90 minutes.
Will Push Square re-review the game if all the technical issues are ironed out?
I would never understand why people love mediocrity and this is not a subjective matter that game was release in alpha state making it unplayable yet people still believe it’s a game of the year and that CDPR will fix it so it doesn’t matter if it’s trash for the moment even after freaking 8 years in development lol
@wiiware - I see what you did there
@Ryall - Agreed, just look at Mass Effect Andromeda, horrible game, a disgrace to the Mass Effect legacy that was established... but it sold well enough that a new Mass Effect game was bound to happen. Sometimes good sales don't always mean a game is good.
@Hal_9Million I hope they don't re-review the game. They deserve the 3. Same as how No Man's Sky is a great game now but doesn't deserve its initial scores changing.
@AJDarkstar The game reviewed was on the PS5. It was played on PS5 using the backwards compatibility.
Maybe actually read the review before coming for the reviewer??
@Hal_9Million Agreed mate. I'm coming up to 80 hours played and I've only done 30% of V's story. It's nowhere near the technical quality of The Last Of Us 2 but so far it's the most enjoyable game I've played this year.
PC players are not going to judge a game based on the PS4 version. Just like I do not skip on a game because it runs at 600p and 20fps on my Nintendo Switch.
I simply go and find another way to play it.
It will sell even more, Loving it on PC (60% of preorders) and the amount of content is crazy.
I guess their deceptive marketing paid off really well in the end lol.
To be fair, 59% of pre-orders were on PC where it doesn't have most of the problems of the PS4 version. There's no excuse for being released in that state on last gen consoles but it was clearly a PC targeted game where its PC Metacritic score is way higher than its console score - and where most sales were made despite it also being released on, effectively, 8 different console versions terms of separate ownerships (PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, XB1, XB1X, XB1S, XBSX, XBSS) as opposed to one PC version.
It's a fantastically well designed game. The world is full and rich and the characters many and varied. The stories and characters are great. CDPR have created a masterpiece that a lot of people are overlooking thanks to the negative experience of people using dated consoles and PCs.
I'm having a blast with it on my ps5 and 1080p TV. The game works equally well when I remote play on the PS4 in the other room.
@Agramonte 100% agree
Without all the bugs, this is still a basic game. Nothing really special and deserving higher status, a lot of people defending it have low standards for high quality games.
Gaming companies will see this and realise they can get away with it.
13 Million Copies in 2 weeks are crazy numbers
@JoshuaTChandler I mean, there's two different ways that can go.
I personally have a high tolerance for the state of games. Whether that means being OK with low res Switch ports or the buggy broken Bethesda style of game, and even very basic games as long as there's something about that title that I like. Though I'll never make excuses for games like that, or try to make them out to be better than they are, just contend that I was able to enjoy it.
Then there's the otherside. Those that call every game they enjoy, a "masterpiece". Like their preferences and objective criticism of art and entertainment are intrinsically linked.
@AJDarkstar Just because you don't agree with a review doesn't make it a troll. R U Donald Trump, unable to see the merit in something because it doesn't fit your opinion. If you want just yes men then, please, go elsewhere. I have seen lots of different opinion of this game, some people love it, some people like it and some people are disappointed as they thought they were getting something new, something groundbreaking, when in reality it's just a bog standard rpg. And all of these things are OK. People are allowed to feel differently about things. Instead of throwing a hissy fit because it doesn't align with your views. Why do you need your views on this game validated elsewhere? Surely if you love it, that should be enough. I think this site has done a pretty good Job Of showing both sides of the coin. Sammy is loving his time with it. Robert not so much. Not every site is going to have a glowing review and some people seem to forget this is a PLAY Station site and the majority of us here still only have a PS4. PS5 owners are still in the minority so I think the site, rightly so, has a duty to report on the version that the majority of us will be playing this game on. And he didn't do that cause the performance was so bad! And that is fact. There is plenty of evidence.
@Iroha Faaaaacts. Pokemon sword and shield didn't have the full pokedex, and it was the best selling entry, people bought the dlc. No problem whatsover. I expect the next entries to be the same with the same unfinished dex.
Same thing with anual sports games, wii u resold games at full price, timed games like mario collection etc...
I applaud older generations when it comes to this. they value money.
@AJDarkstar.... You are a filucking troll and CDPR apologists and spin doctor and fonboy... G. T. F. O. O. H ........ Weasel.......
@AJDarkstar I'm sorry if trying to have a rational conversation about this is upsetting you. They reviewed the PS4 version of this game on a PS5 which still resulted in a game breaking bug 65 Hours into the playthrough. If that's not broken, I don't know what is. I'm happy you are enjoying the game but fail to understand why you can't understand why other people might be upset. I suppose having no empathy in you might be useful but it must be an awful lonley existence. Still at least you Cyberpunk to keep you warm.
@LiterallyDoNotCare Yes theses are all facts you are correct. But these games you mention are content bare (in some peoples opinion) not broken. So you didn't get a full pokedex, what you did get was a game that ran well on it's intended platform that you could play through all they way to the end with no to little issues. That's not what CDPR released. I fail to see what your comment has to add to the discussion.
Quick question, this number will include units sold wholesale to game stores online and bricks and mortar right?? So this isn't just individual purchase by people is it?
I find the thought of so many disappointed people who are going to get this for christmas and it's not going to work, really sad.
@Iroha Doesn't matter if it works. It's recycled or cut content that is always there. Oh, but it adds to it.The point is, even if the game is unfinshed, broken, recycled and resold, gamers have low standards when it comes to games and still buy them. They don't stand for anything. They just take everything without filtering first, and it has cost great franchices to become worthless in the eyes of the most experienced.
Example. Now I won't enjoy the next pokemon games because they won't have a full pokedex, leaving out my favorite pokemons to use on the campaign and online. Because others simply didn't care or don't care about getting a better product.
@AJDarkstar Great. Calling a random person the dumbest person online is very smart.
He might be doctor, a lawyer, knows how to be a husband etc...
but you clearly know so much about him because of a small debate about a topic. Smart move. Gotta give you props oh great one.
@LiterallyDoNotCare Yeah, Nintendo have a bad history with this stuff also.
@AJDarkstar Now you calling me stupid? How am I stupid? Would love to see you try.
99% of the game buying public don’t look at gaming websites and reviews.
