Gran Turismo Sport transformed Sony’s flagship simulation racing series into a hugely popular e-sport, and thus was successful at pushing the brand forward. However, series fans lamented the lack of a fully-featured single player campaign like in previous entries; the loosely RPG-inspired car collecting mode of previous titles has, after all, been a big part of the brand’s long-term success.
We already know that Gran Turismo 7 on the PlayStation 5 will be a combination of the “past, present, and future”, which means it will include a full-length solo mode. However, in an interview with journalist Toshifumi Watanabe for Octane Japan – as translated by GT Planet – series creator Kazunori Yamauchi reiterated that we can expect a more traditional experience this time around.
“While inheriting elements such as the [FIA] championship realized in GT Sport, Gran Turismo 7 will return to the royal purpose of full volumes like [Gran Turismo] 1-4, and provide the best Gran Turismo experience at present,” he said. The translation’s slightly strange, but we’re sure you can infer what he’s getting at here.
This feels like the natural next step for the franchise, to be honest. Obviously the e-sports aspect is not going anywhere – and the multiplayer mode was so successful on the PS4, we wouldn’t want it to – but building a more traditional single player experience out of that should benefit the overall package, and we reckon this is going to be a big hit when it releases on PS5 later this year.

Sounds like exactly what I’m looking for. I love the series for its single player modes and while I’m not a big online player of pretty much any game, the eSports systems put in place in Sport were brilliant and I wouldn’t want to see that go away.
I’m really stoked to hear this! Gran Turismo 2 remains an all time driving game high for me.
I just want to start out with a little bit of money, buy a peice of crap car and work my way up from there. I had so much fun with the old GT games doing that and i wish they would bring that back.
Not a fan of racing games but these guys seem so obsessed with every detail, both a positive and a negative as they take so long that it's arguable that Forza has surpassed them
This game is the reason I got a PS5. ....ok and Demons Souls.
There will be a ton of other games I know but these two are my golden gooses. ....geese. ....eggs....
...okay they’re my most hyped games.
Beautiful to hear. The first 3 were the best of the series imo. Though I still really doubt it hits this year, whenever we do get it I'll be there day one!
My guess is 2023. I just wish they would put some realistic vehicle damage in, driving at 200mph into a wall and the car just stops dead. It takes all of the other realism away.
@redd214 I do believe they were on schedule for this year, just depends how badly coronavirus has disrupted them.
As long as there's good single player campaign in the game, I'm in 😃
@get2sammyb yeah with Corona and Kaz/Polyphony propensity for delays I'm less than optimistic, but would be thrilled to be wrong!
@Ausboy31 definitely agree there. Even games like Shift 2 Unleashed on the PS3 did damage better than even GT Sport. Really hope the fix that as well as the engine sounds.
Really hoping for the return of an updated Course Maker (w/ the GPS Track Path Editor functionality that was spoken on in the past), as well as classics like Deep Forest, Midfield, Hong Kong, etc. I'd like to see them do more with their rally as well, and introduce some tight & technical point to point time trials.
Multiplayer needs to be updated so the host can make a playlist/race series with a points system. Maybe even allow teams so up to 8 teams can race in a 16 player lobby, scoring points toward the series finale. They added some drift challenges in GT Sport, but why not have it in multiplayer for drift lobbies? Basically, just more variety for the vast community of GT/motorsport fans.
Lastly, I really don't understand why driving GT & more sims don't allow for more cusomization/body kits. They exist in real life and provide various physics/performance based effects. Would be great to have the best of both worlds from arcade & GT in one place. Deep customization & GT physics.
@ellsworth004
This. It's so boring how all car games have you driving crazy dream cars so quickly these days. Also really over games that tailor the majority of races to whatever car you're driving rather having very strict entry restrictions with a limited ammount of models to choose from.
The old GT model added a great sense of progression that is missing from a lot of racing games.
Battle royale mode! Just kidding.
@SZRT_CIC_Ice Agree with you on the body kits. GT2 sort of had this with the racing modification option. I loved when you did all you could maxing out the performance, then got to add the mod and see it turn into a race car. I was pretty down when GT3 nixed it and didn't have any other body mod options.
VR mode again please. While GT Sport’s VR mode wasn’t extensive, what they did give us was great fun.
I loved the 3D capability of GT 5. Shame it's no longer supported.
Full blown career mode with 10k to start out with a little second hand car, licences, subtle tweaks like the oil changing and car wash from previous games will do me fine. Not overly bothered about damage or mods. Damage would be nice as an option but the mods can be left to need for speed.
Yes I think the only doubt is if it's going to launch this year. Just my opinion, mine, not a dig at anyone.
That's good to hear. I'm not really a racing buff by any stretch, but as a casual racer, GT Sport was seriously disappointing, while Forza 7 was fantastic, but didn't really evolve much. The arcade racers definitely fared best last gen.
@SoulChimera since psvr technically isn't a ps5 accessory, there'd only be a vr mode if this is cross gen, I'm afraid.
Forza no where near the level of gt In terms of gameplay or sales.
@NEStalgia Yep. As long as it’s a true PS5 only game, I’m fine with it not having VR. Or VR coming later with PSVR2.
But if it's going to be another cross gen game, they had better include it.
Id love to see a game that claims to be not quite as good as previous entries in a series.
Sounds good, as a largely single player gamer I thought GT Sport was pretty poor and easily the weakest entry. GT3 is probably still my favourite overall and with its great soundtrack and fun handling, hopefully this lives up to that legacy
@MrGilly69
Why should mods remain only in NFS?
I sincerely hope they leave sport mode intact. Fixing the penalties in the process.
Closest console game to IRacing quality racing.
If it was fully playable in VR I don't think I would resist buying a full racing sim set up. Not just 1v1 races
@MetalGear_Yoshi barely winning the sunday cup in my 1985 PoS was so much fun. I got the first GT along with the first dual shock(at least i think they came out at the same time) was the best racing game i ever played and analog controller was a game changer. Also doing all the tests to get the different licenses was alot of fun.
As long as the only thing I can afford at the start is a 1980s honda civic I'm happy.
Can’t wait to drop it to the ground, stick on a massive unpainted wing, carbon bonnet and install a full race system on an old 2nd hand VTEC. Hopefully cars get dirty, need oil changes and drop Bhp if you don’t. Anybody playing GTSport on PS5 and would like to compare to a base PS4 ?
@weegiebored 2k 60fps. It is so smooth.
Lost my interest in Gran Turismo long ago. The high point for me personally was GT4. 5 was just an HD update, 6 went completely under my radar, Sport had it's moments and at least tried something new but if multiplayer isn't your cup of tea it fell flat.
The only way this could get my interest again is if they have massive improvements to the opponent AI and there is an option to qualify for races and set the race length. If literally every race means you have 3 laps to work your way to number one from last place then as a game designer you don't really understand what racing is about...
I enjoyed Project Cars 2 massively more then Gran Turismo becaues I could learn a track in free practice and adjust my settings, then qualify, then depending on my qualifying results I had to defend my position from a capable AI, or try to overtake by driving slightly faster but very consistent. The feeling of finally overtaking someone (even an AI) after stalking him for 5 laps is so much better then overtaking 12 cars in 2 laps in a massively overpowered car.
But yeah, that's just my 2 cents. If you guys still enjoy Gran Turismo as much as I did back in the days I'm happy for you. I just wish they would improve on a few areas are then shinier cars.
Great post Flurpsel. Can’t argue with any of that except to say we get a choice of excellent racing games. I tried to get back into the original Project Cars but still found playing with a controller frustratingly finicky even after some set up advice. Last time I played with a wheel was Formula1 on the original PlayStation! PC2 or 3 much improved?
Just going off their track record, I'm still expecting this to be 2022. Would be a dream scenario if we actually got this and PSVR2 at the end of next year. I know people want everything right now, but we have to face the fact we're only going to get 1 or 2 games from any series in an entire gen from now on. I'd rather they took their time rather than get something rushed out and be stuck with it for years.
I've had PSVR for almost 3 years and enjoyed it, but recently started playing PC racing games and sims in VR and it's taken it to a whole new level for me. Driving is perfect for VR as your character is always fixed in place so you don't get that weird immersion breaking/motion sickness inducing weirdness.
@weegiebored PC3 is utter mince. Its an arcade game now. No pit stops etc.
2023 is going to be a wild year!
I don't think this will be released for another few years until PS5 starts hitting mass market saturation. It sounds like a dream come true and I just hope to play it someday.
@Flurpsel
Just because GT6 went under your radar doesn't mean it is a bad game. GT5/6 improved the car physics massively over GT4. GT6 is a fantastic game way superior to GT4. You could say a lot about PD - but they strive for perfection and they certainly don't go backwards.
I love GT games and always look forward to the next one especially for a next-gen console The one small thing it lacks tho is er excitement when your playing a race. I am not sure why but maybe it's because I always make my car way faster than the rest and no one can catch me(off-line of course because I'll probably get destroyed online i bet)
SP = purchase from me.
@tinCAT-zero I played 6 years later. It was very much the same as 1, 2 3 4 and 5 in my opinion
@Jimmer-jammer...... It's the best driving games, it's only being topped graphically but not game play wise and not as a total package racing game.
It is the Goat of racing games.
I still have not found a station wagon faster than the Subaru Station wagon in GT2
@Subsided...... For a has not surpassed....
No racing game can keep laps with Gran Torismo.
All racing games dream of being a Gran Torismo
@redd214...... I think polyphony are focused on the driving simulation part 9f racing and real don't give two dams about visual or physical damage.
I personally don't see how visual or physical damage helps with immersion Ina racing game.
Actually visual and physical damage are annoying in a racing games.
For example a car really get boring wants you crash and it gets damaged.....
@GREGORIAN cool, hope you enjoy GT7 when it's released
@NEStalgia...... The Ps4 generation has the speciality that all racing games released during then gen were all crap the entire generation
@Flurpsel...... But Project Cars does not have capable AI.
STOP lying
@Carl-G..... . Not sure which GT's you've been playing but in Gt overpowered customization goes up to a level. As soo. As soon as you reach Ford GT car level then car overpowering has diminishing returns and winning because about how you drive.....
@redd214... Cool you have enjoy it too.
