Hello Games is back with yet another impressive update for No Man's Sky, which this time around adds companions to the space explorer. The free update will be available to download today on both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, and also includes some small improvements under the hood for last-gen users. Check out the trailer embedded above for an introduction to the Companions update.
Over on Twitter, Sean Murray shared further details. You'll be able to adopt the wildlife you come across as pets, raise their babies, and then breed them with other creatures. You can trade eggs, customise your companion, and even train them to complete chores. Plus you can, of course, talk to them. Outside of interacting with your new best friend, the user-interface is said to have been improved, PS4 players will be treated to faster load times, and fauna has also undergone some enhancements. Finally, you can also ride giant creatures. Because who doesn't want to do that?
This update follows in the footsteps of numerous other patches that have worked to improve No Man's Sky in the past few years, which has culminated in a great PS5 version. In our 7/10 review, we concluded: "No Man's Sky has made enormous leaps forward, and its arrival on PS5 is an opportune time to revisit this ambitious survival game." The game also just went on sale for £19.99/$29.99 as part of the PS Store Double Discounts sale, so there's never been a better time to jump in and give it a proper go.

I need to revisit this game.
Yup definitely needs a revisit.
Damn imagine all this stuff was on original release or at least some of it,
But this is a proper show of how a game can be completely fixed and reworked over time... rather doing it all in one shot.....looking at you Anthem
I need to purchase this game.
Need to install this again on ps5, can't wait to try the new graphics upgrade
I loved this game when it first came out! Now it’s just gotten too big for me. Still love it but I didn’t need all this extra stuff. But that’s just me!
PS5 version is a great improvement. Load times massively improved for initial start up and travelling between star systems. Its the game I play when cycling on my turbo trainer as it's pretty chilled out without need for much concentration. Complete time sink and gets me through my 1-2 hours cycling session!
Does that make me odd?
Could this be the fauna update I was waiting for?
5 Year Anniversary this year and they clearly have no plans on slowing down, its incredible how far its come and they have never once asked for more money. Also reading the update notes on the NMS website is like being a kid at Xmas and getting at excited at all the new things.
Been with it since Day 1 and its been one hell of a ride. I said at the time before launch i would be playing it for years and i really am.
I bought it last week. It's a really good game. I can't imagine how it was when it got out, but I can say that, today, I am enjoying it very very much. And the fact that I can keep evolving my stuff and even friends' bases without them being online, it's so cool. loving it.
Never had any interest in this game when it was first released..but these days each bit of news and new updates brings me closer to actually buying the game..it really does look good now.
@Uromastryx I think Anthem is beyond salvation. It would be more "looking at you Cyberpunk".. lol
I really really REALLY want to like NMS but every time I load it up I get faced with another planet that looks like all the others, with not much to do on it, and ten minutes later I've quit again to play something with more 'direction'. Maybe it will click one day.
@zeppray my thoughts exactly
@zeppray I agree. I went back to this after the ealier updates but everything seemed like a proper unnecessary grind compared to when I first played it.
@Wazeddie22 Definitely
@ApostateMage if it was grindy originally, it was grindy x10 last time I played it a year or so ago before trading it in - I assume it's even more so now!
And unlike, say, Stardew Valley, where even the early game grind is enjoyable...this sure as hell isn't once the novelty wears off.
Keep meaning to get back into this. Sounds like a good time to do so.
We can tame those spider crab things? Died hundreds of times to those.
I'll play it when they finally finish it
